StarTopic Film Chat |ST| What's Your Favorite Acting Turn?

Watched Dungeons and Dragons and had a fun time. It's the type of summer film (e.g. "Pirates of the Carribean 1") that I wish Hollywood would produce more often. Lots of action, comedy and heart.

Just watched Face/Off for the first time.

I was expecting a hammy, cheesy, over the top action movie… and that was delivered.

What I didn’t expect was such a great story, hilarious one liners, and extremely fun performances from everyone but especially, obviously, Travolta and Nic Cage.

10/10 action movie for me, loved it and would watch again

Humanity peaked with Face/Off tbh

Been downhill since

At the start of this month I had never seen a single Maniac Cop film. Well folks, I have now seen all three, and critics agree: "Make Mine Maniac!"

I really want to see this one too. Heard it’s great

Have only seen the first one but it threw so many curveballs at me! Well, mostly I was just surprised by Sheree North's unhinged performance (Academy Award please!) and how big Taylor Swift's hair was back then.

And boy that cop sure was a maniac.

Gotta watch 2, he's even more of a maniac! Wow!

Watched First Reformed. Absolutely terrific. As a Jewish atheist it can be hard to make me sympathetic to a Christian priest as a main character, but Ethan Hawke was fantastic in the role. I was invested in his crisis of faith and trying to make sense of the world around him.

I ended up seeing the 4k restoration of Werckmeister Harmonies at the theater. Was quite the experience, glad I went out to catch that one.

Saw that new spider man. Crazy that this is like, what, the 3rd good super hero movie. Felt like reading a stack of good comics. Glad to see Yeag Girl Representation. 4.5/5

Caught Indy this afternoon, was pleasantly surprised by how Spielbergy the movie felt! The cinematography was spot-on and John Williams' score was just perfect. Exactly what I needed this weekend.

also it was nice to watch a movie where the main character shit-talks Nazis half the time

Got really drunk and watched The Tales of Hoffmann last night. Was losin' my mind and hootin and hollerin when Kleinzach showed up

thats cinema!!!!!

One of the most beautiful films ever made, said jesus christ in awe of what was on the screen every 5 minutes.

Watched the new Mission Impossible movie. Very enjoyable film. Hayley Atwell is great in this. Fun character and she is strikingly beautiful in this. For the longest time from the trailer did not even realize she was Agent Carter. Also enjoyed Esai Morales, hope to see him in more stuff. Hadn't seen him in anything since Caprica.

Quickly through some other films I've seen recently:

Ouija Origins of Evil. Decent spooky film from Mike Flanagan.

Malevolent. Meh(levolent).

Wind River. Was alright, though unexpectedly wrapped up. Which I liked that unexpected turn. I expected a slower burn, but that was certainly one way to keep a runtime down.

Pearl. If anyone recalls what I thought about X, this doesn't change much. Overall better than X, but way more self indulgent. It just seems to exist soley as a Mia Goth vehicle. Like her final monologue never cuts away to a reaction shot which then becomes a distraction away from whatever she's saying. And then the final shot of her as the credits roll. Like I know what you're going for, but it is just irritatingly not working here.

Watched Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula again. Wish more films did more stylistic choices for their drama and horror. It doesn't always work but it still feels fresh in its attempts at least.

I enjoyed the Macguffin more than Crystal Skull, but the movie lacked Spielberg's fluid oners and general sense of motion. Too much cutting in coverage. I liked the last half hour, though I think the villain deserved a nastier comeuppance, as we've come to expect from the franchise.

Saw the new mission impossible last night and loved it. Gonna need to digest on it before I can rank it tho. I rewatched the first six movies before the new one, they rank:

Fallout
Ghost Protocol
Rogue Nation
2
1
3

Dead reckoning is definitely better than the first 3. The wait for part 2 is gonna suck.

Nimona is friggen excellent. Trust Disney to cancel it originally when it’s better than anything they’ve put out in years, but we never would have gotten anything so blatantly LGBT as the version we got from Netflix so probably a blessing there.

I'm seeing Dead Reckoning tomorrow night, Oppenheimer in 70mm on Saturday, and still need to cop tickets for Barbie. Gonna be a good week.

Watched Last Night in Soho on a whim basically knowing nothing about what it was about. Didn't even read the small blurb beforehand, only knew it was Edgar Wright and Anya Taylor-Joy was in it. Did not expect what it ended up being about so that was fun. Had I known beforehand, I don't think I would have liked it as much mostly due to conventions of the genre would have been more apparent. Still more bleak than expected regardless. Thomasin McKenzie delivers a captivating performance in this as well.

Well I wanted to to an actual Barbenheimer double feature just for the meme of it but I don't wanna exclude my dad on Oppenheimer (and not sure I'd wanna see it twice myself) soooo I think I'll go ahead and treat myself to a late lunch and a very pink 𝓶𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓷𝓮𝓮

Well, I just ate some Popeyes and am now gonna have Barbie pop my eyes

Edit: SO MANY PEOPLE WEARING PINK AT THE THEATER 💓

Edit edit: WHY DID THE DAMN BARBIE MOVIE PUNCH ME IN THE SOUL AND MAKE ME CRY???!!!

My older, local theater did a special midnight showing of Tetsuo: The Iron Man. Just got home from that and oh man, catching that in a theater was one of my favorite movie experiences. Unbelievable how much it adds to the visual insanity of it all.

Oppenheimer, in the words of my good friend, could have used much more Oppenheimer and much less Nolan.

Shin Kamen Rider

This is like watching 10 movies.

Shot in decrepit buildings, costruction sites, rail yards, and various nowheres. Both a minimalist and maximalist take on Kamen Rider. Blood splashes and bones crunch to the sound effects and music of the 70s. Visual invocations of Aum, cult of AI and happiness through technology. How should one deal with world ending trauma? Heal, make the world a better place? Become an asshole?

So I just saw Oppenheimer in IMAX. I'm impressed.

After seeing some complaints that the movie was bomb-porn and glorified this terrible point in history, I was really surprised to see that this is basically a horror film. And I wonder how all the people insisting Oppenheimer should "win" over "woke Barbie" are reacting to a major "villain" of the movie being the government trying to destroy people's lives for having left-wing ideas.

Anyway, hell of a movie. I'd probably give the edge to Barbie though, as that movie was like a celebration of cinema itself. I just don't think anyone can complete with "Greta Gerwig but with a big budget." Maybe Edgar Wright?

Saw Barbie earlier this week, by which I was merely whelmed. I want to see it again in case I'll like it better on a second viewing knowing now what to expect, but towards end of the film (i think during a Ken dance number as I was zoning out) I thought to myself, "I don't think I'd want to rewatch this movie again." I like Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie in this alot and Simu Liu and I like what the film was mostly going for but it felt too rigid in its zaniness and overt in its messaging which is summarily manifested in an exasperated America Ferrara monolgue. It worked best when the aforementioned actors are the driving force behind the zany and messaging through their childlike perspectives in ironic contrast to "how things are" but outside of them it just felt forced and spread a little thin due to the breadth of what it seems to want to address.

Just got out of seeing the new TMNT film. Really disappointed. Just an appallingly dull story and scenes of expositional dialogue and flashbacks that no one asked for or needs that bring the pacing to a screeching hault. Right from the beginning I was worried and it really maintained that all throughout. Just felt like a squandering of an opportunity with the IP and and reeks a bit of entitlement that a sequel is a forgone conclusion to justify possibly telling such an underwhelmingly rudimentary origin story.

Not sure about seeing Oppenheimer in theaters or waiting several months for streaming since it's 3 hour Nolan film and I'm not a fan of his really pompous indulgences anyway.

Next film I do want to see though is Talk To Me. Looks good and seems to be getting pretty good reviews.

Mission Impossible so far is the best thing I've seen in theaters this year I think which also includes Spider-man, Mario, Evil Dead, Guardians Vol. 3, and Beau is Afraid.

Caught a showing of Talk to Me. It was alright all told but far from a fun experience, pretty traumatic sequences in it feauturing some self harm that was hard to watch. Also the foley work for certain sounds was jarring and obnoxious. A pillow should not sound like a leather bound dictionary. Reminds me a bit of The Six Sense as well as The Shining with the ghosts. But I feel left wanting more in fleshing out the ghostly motivations and a bit more lore in the rules of it all.

Great performances all around, well directed. Wish the script took the story elsewhere as I did not connect much with the conventional backstory of the main character. Felt distracting and tacked on. But it is a pretty humble production overall like a well produced indie film (with something like eight different studios showing involved during the opening) so I appreciate what they did accomplish with the limited scope.

Great premise and small scope production. Characters and party, get together sequences are very believable as well. Just hard to watch at times and not as "fun" as horror films can be. I sat in the theater at one point wondering why I pay money to put myself through such experiences.

Did anyone end up watching Blue Beetle, or nah? I loved it, and I'm not usually one for superhero movies!

Did any Fami folk who live in Japan go to see the new Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli film, The Boy and the Heron?

It seems to have mixed reviews on IMDb with viewers disliking the flow of the story.

Ended up getting my $4 ticket to go catch the theater run of the Oldboy release last night. It was a pretty packed theater, which was pretty cool to see for a 20 year old rerelease. A lot of people in that audience had never seen it, so I got to sit through some pretty big audience reactions to the back third of it. Pour one out for the poor guy in front of me who brought his date to this one.

Another movie I'm pretty glad to have finally seen on the big screen. Like, the hallway scene is the obvious standout reason to check it out in that format, but there's a lot of really standout camerawork through the whole thing that I appreciated seeing. Was wildly engrossing even knowing how it plays out, and the action scenes are all super kinetic and fun. Would rec to see if it's still playing near you.

Took my dad to see Retribution.

My dad's review: "That might be the worst Liam Neeson movie I've seen. He didn't even beat the crap outta anybody."

Also the whole time I kept thinking "is 'Liam Neeson answers a phone' basically its own genre by now?"

I watched Oldboy for the first time a couple weeks ago, at the Alamo Drafthouse. Pretty awesome theatrical experience, and I'm shocked I was able to avoid spoilers for 20 years, considering the movie came out in the US and had a lot of 'BRO, HAVE YOU SEEN THIS' discourse while I was in college.
