Sales Data Famitsu Week 38, 2022 (Sep. 12-18): Phil's Quest

Abzeronow

Koopa
Pronouns
he/him

Software:
1. Splatoon 3 506,610/2,441,290
2. NSW Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Offline 143,836
3. PS4 Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Offline 48,100
4. PS5 Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Offline 28,371
5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 9,661/4,837,415
6. Nintendo Switch Sports 7,463/732,175
7. NSW Trinity Trigger 6,698
8. Minecraft 6,629/2,792,678
9. Kirby and the Forgotten Land 5,027/888,934
10. Super Smash Brothers Ultimate 4,720/4,976,532

Splatoon 3 is still splatting the competition. Switch is far and away the best performer for Dragon Quest and Smash continues to slug towards 5 million.

Hardware:
Nintendo Switch family (includes OLED, Lite and OG) 127,558 (this week), 3,287,020 (YTD)
Switch OLED 96,889 (this week), 1,850,722 (YTD)
Xbox Series 14,077 (this week), 209,590 (YTD)
PS5 (all varieties) 11,180 (this week), 702,346 (YTD)

Switch continues to scoff at saturation with the mighty OLED doing numbers. Phil beats Sony again and Sony will probably outsell Wii U soon?

DQ X Offline seems quite low. Not bad but I might have overestimated it. I expected Japan to be more hyped for it since there's no subscription but I guess not.

I have seen some premium grade copium takes from this week lol. Trinity trigger being there must mean that at least with the ps4/5 it sold around 8k? Not bad

In Japan, the XBOX sold better than the PS5, partly because of the temporary 5,000 yen discount on the Series S from the 16th.

There were apparently stock issues. Would be interesting to see digital sales.
Indeed. Because for a DQ remake launch that is quite low. 8 did 585 000 at launch on 3ds and 7 did 873 000 on 3ds. So 220 000 physical for 10 is not too hot. Every previous remakes have well passed the million mark in the end too.
The game is currently number 2 (standard edition) and 4 (complete edition) on the eshop.

Sony is about to feel Japan's wrath for upping their prices.

All Phil needs to do to seal the deal, is just more and more Japanese Gamepass games, and one fantastic Japanese exclusive. Easier said than done though.

I'm just here to say that I'm greatly enjoying the thread title.

Ahh, Square Enix game on Switch and being undershipped, name a more iconic duo.
It's crazy, you'd think SE just inherited DQ and doesn't realize how significant an offline version of that game would be. You have a successful MMO in a popular worldwide IP that's exclusive(?) to Japan. So you decide to make an offline version of it that you both under ship in the country where the online version has been incredibly popular, but make no attempt to localize it worldwide? SE had the world's easiest grand slam but still managed to score a run from not paying attention and getting beaned by the ball.

I am so happy to see that Splatoon 3 is THIS successful. Its basically the anti thesis to "Nintendo is only successful because of nostalgia" rethoric and just shows that the folks there know how to design games for real.

No matter the genre. Way to go Splatoon team. Can't wait for the singleplayer DLC.

My GOTY already.

I’ve been told this myself, by members of this forum. Something about it reaching its saturation point. The weekly numbers out of Japan the last few months surely paint a different picture though
The same weekly numbers that have it notably below where it was in 2020 and 2021 YTD?

Its sales are not, like, collapsing. But it is showing a decline. Maybe Splatoon 3 will reverse that and it’ll have its best sales year ever in Japan and break 6M units but that’s not at all a forgone conclusion.

Earlier this year the YTD decline was 33%, now it is only 14% . Switch sales this year have 100% been decided by supply specially of the OLED model, right now in most retail stores all switch consoles are sold out (especially OLED and most of Lite colors)

And here I was told that sequels on the same system never sell more.

Great sales numbers all around. Splatoon 3 will go past 5 years of Splatoon 2 sales by the end of the year.

And here I was told that sequels on the same system never sell more.
Can add Splatoon 3 to these examples of sequels that sold more than their predecessor(s) on the same system(s) worldwide, might get some use for Tears of the Kingdom discourse:

Uncharted 3 > 2 > 1 on PS3
Monster Hunter Freedom 3 > Unite > 2 > 1 on PSP
Modern Warfare 3 > Black Ops > Modern Warfare 2 > World at War = Modern Warfare on PS360
Modern Warfare 2019 > all other Call of Duty games
GTA San Andreas > Vice City > III on PS2
GTA5 > GTA4 on PS360
Halo 2 > 1 on Xbox
Bioshock Infinite > 1 on PS360
Skyrim > Oblivion on PS360
Forza Horizon 4 > 3 on XB1
Tekken 3 > 2 > 1 on PS1
Tekken 5 > 4 on PS2
Far Cry 3 > 2 on PS360
Mortal Kombat 11 > X on PS4/XBO
Resident Evil 2 > 1 on PS1
Mario Party 7 > 6 on NGC
Ace Combat 3 > 2 on PS1
Kirby Super Star > Squeak Squad > Canvas Curse on NDS
Dragon Quest VI > V on Super Famicom
Dragon Quest III > II > I on Famicom
Mega Man 2 > 1 on NES
Mega Man Battle Network 4 > 3 > 2 > 1 on GBA
Trails in the Sky SC > FC on PSP
Trails to Azure > Trails from Zero on PSP
Yo-kai Watch 2 > 1 on 3DS

+ FIFA, NBA 2K, Madden NFL, MLB The Show, Just Dance...

And the list grows bigger in Japan where even games like Super Mario Galaxy 2 sold more.

Amazing numbers for Nintendo. And people still saying Switch is in decline.

There are supply chain issues that continue to cause problems, but it's objectively accurate to note that Switch sales have declined. This is true both globally and in Japan and Nintendo themselves have issued guidance that is down. Given the lifecycle of consoles in the past, it's reasonable to assume that this decline will continue.

It's also true that 2022 in Japan is well ahead of 2019 numbers, and so questions remain about saturation levels.

SE & product mismanagement is probably a more iconic duo than under shipping

Amazing numbers for Nintendo. And people still saying Switch is in decline.
It is but sales are still very strong and on pace to sell another 5 million in Japan this year. By the way no console has ever sold 5 million or more for three consecutive years in Japan (not even DS). Switch could set another record.

wow @BotW selling more then Xenoblade 3.

Its selling more than in 2018.
21 millions for this fiscal year is amazing, if it isnt selling more is for the chips shortage not for the lack of demand.
Switch is selling more than 2019 as well and not just hardware but software is still very high and comparable to 2021. Japan hardware will be 500k up on last quarter and the the rest of the world should be up a little with the splatoon 3 launch as well. I think 4.2 to 4.5 million will be shipped for this quarter and as for software i'm predicting 52 million. For the calendar year i think 22 million will happen and the fiscal year will be really close to 22 million as well. For yearly software i think 2022 will hit 225 to 230 million.

On of the main reasons for OLED is to sell systems to people who already bought one, Nintendo isn't secretive about that.

Not quite, just the number of households with a Switch is not growing like it was.
Ok this does makes sense to me. But does it really matter though. As long as household is dipping for more switches, wouldn’t this just move the bar for saturation ahead?

wow @BotW selling more then Xenoblade 3.
Xenoblade 3 has a very big digital percentage due to the price being cheaper digitally. The percentage of digital is over 60%. On the other hand, Zelda is in a leauge of its own. The best game ever created in my opinion.

BOTW's numbers (as well as numbers for some of the other games on that list, such as Smash, MK8D) seem to be the result of these strong hardware sales. Even Animal Crossing is on the list.

Ahh, Square Enix game on Switch and being undershipped, name a more iconic duo.
"Look, I know we had more than a few successes on Switch, but trust me, this is the one, this one is gonna fucking bomb. Hell, I don't even know why we bothered with a Switch SKU! We better print just a few physical copies, just to be safe."

How about Atlus games published by Deep Silver/Koch in Europe on DS/3DS. ‘How many copies shall we print for the dozens of countries we’re making this for?’
‘Oh, how about… 5? Nobody wants these’
/entire print run sells out in a matter of days
