Discussion Famicom Detective Club has the most unfitting name for any game I've ever played

I want to talk about one of my favorite releases from Nintendo this generation, the 2021 remake of Famicom Detective Club, but in particular I want to bring a peculiar fact, that being that the game has an absolutely terrible name, in the sense that it just does not represent the game well at all, and is overall probably the most unfitting name for any game I've ever played, and I can't just take the 2 main parts o the game's title to show it:

1- Detective Club: there is no Detective Club in the game, you play as one detective who works for a detective agency, something that isn't particularily relevant in the first game since he is alone doing his investigations for the most part, but overall there is no such thing as a club of multiple people. The sequel does mention a detective club existing, however is nothing important at all and the main character isn't part of it, so maybe they trought that bit because they knew the name made no sense, although at the very least he is alongside another character for a good chunk of the adventure now, but still, 2 people ain't exactly a Club. Having the word detective totally makes sense, but it should have been Detective Mystery or Detective Agency instead of Detective Club.

2- Famicom: they slapped the word Famicom because Nintendo often liked to add the name of the console in some of it's japanese releases, like Famicom Grand Prix, however I see it as an extremely poor choice for this game, since the console's name is the "Family Computer", so is easy to think a game featuring the console's title would be a one that the whole family can play, and that + the "Detective Club" means that is easy to think that is about a group of children that have a club where they solve some little mysteries, like where the lost neighbour's pet is or something like that. All of that is a huge mistake since this game is anything but a family friendly experience, since it's dark and violent, with constant murders happening on the 2 stories and also bringing topics like suicide and having plenty of relatively mature moments, so the fact that the word Famicom is there just in the end makes no sense at all. Plus the first game is overall a very serious experience, with the second part at least bringing some more comedic moments.

I will make a little comparison for the people who have watched the anime/ read the manga of Detective Conan, and that is that the title of Famicom Detective Club could make you think the game would be about something similar as the episodes of the Junior Detective League, when the game is in reality more similar to a regular Detective Conan murder episode.

I still think they should keep the name but reboot the concept as a school sim/detective adventure game set in the 80s. Maybe have it be a sort of prequel to FDC2, I don't know. I just feel adventure games are one of the big genres Nintendomis missing.

The game has a bunch of oddities like why are cops ok with giving access of a crime scene to a teenager who is 15 years old (in one of the games).

Regarding the family friendly experience, to be fair its a T rated game, and I will say most Nintendo first party T rated games are pretty dark lol. But the club part at least from an Iwata Ask it was not the original name, it was Famicom Youth Detective Group but it was with another company, so they pivoted and used club.

Also, I was looking at the eshop and both games are on sale for the first time in the US, individually (the combo is still the same price).

They show up as $35 for me. I checked the eShop on my Switch as well and they don't appear to be on sale.

I checked the webpage first and they both show $35. It doesn't show it on sale on Deku Deals either. Maybe you're somehow looking at a future deal.

i like to think that is us, the players, that are the famicom detective club and the games are the stories that bring us together. kinda like a book club.

Would love to play these games, but I'm still waiting on a sale for the bundle. Why hasn't Nintendo lowered the price even once? It's been 3 years. 😭 I think you can't buy them separate in Europe either (at least I don't see that option).

Idk seems like a Localization problem. At the same time I absolutely dislike the localization name for Detective Conan -> Case Closed so localization can be difficult. NES Detective Agency might be better

They have Another Code for that, which can also pivot to school sim with Ashley. They are just as lacking in visual novels so I would keep FDC in that genre.

imagine if they kept making these across every console generation, with the exact same naming scheme for every title.
  • Nintendo 64 Detective Club
  • GameCube Detective Club
  • Wii Detective Club
  • Switch Detective Club

or just being called “Detective Club” could simply work from now on if new games happened. This naming scheme even applied to the Satellaview game too.

Also - here’s my little treat for this thread too considering the topic! ;)

This was Famicom Wars until someone in the mid-2000's decided to be a coward.

This is a remake of Famicom games, keeping the name make sense because these are not new game worthy of having "Switch" in the title. Heck, changing it to NES would've been more confusing because these games never released outside Japan until this remake.

Waiting for these game to go on sale one day, but it seems to be one of the titles that nintendo never discount's
Most Nintendo games don’t ever go on sale on the eShop, so it should be expected, really. Plus these games technically have an automatic, always active deal applied to them—if you buy one, you get a discount on the other.

Basically, they’ll probably never go on sale outside of that bundle discount, so the best time to have bought the games was at launch—and the second best time to buy them is now. If you continue waiting around for a sale you’ll just never get to experience these games!

But they do though? Like, I can see that games like Animal Crossing, DK Tropical Freeze, Captain Toad, Luigi's Mansion 3, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3, Origami King and even most of Zelda games including BotW have been discounted temporarily at some point on the eShop (normally ~30% off). So I don't understand why these games in particular have never been on sale. 😭 As a rule I don't buy digital Nintendo games full price.

And as I said, in Europe the only option is the bundle so we're not really getting a discount...

If push comes to shove I guess I'll end up paying full price, but (since I still have games to play) not right now. ☹️

The "Detective Club" is comprised of the people who want to play the game.

"Famicom Detective Club" is saying "Hey, are you interested in being a detective? Now you can be with the rest of us, and the Famicom made that possible."

Each case under it can be as connected or loose as they wanted. It was a broad door for what could have been a broad franchise.

It's an invitation. A relic from a time when game names were less standardized in concept, sure — but one that I think absolutely works in the admittedly outdated context.

The fact of the matter is that a lot of names we take for granted — that have become synonymous — sort of originated in the same vein of broad strategies that often spoke to the fourth wall, when there was more uncertainty about how well-invested an audience could be in the world of a game itself.

Take for instance Super Mario 64. What does that mean in a vacuum? Mario is not a "superhero." This is not the sixty-fourth adventure. It's a snowballed accumulation of distinctions.

I thought Detective Club was sorta meant to mean it was an "anthology" of detective games on Famicom - with different detectives investigating crimes forming a "detective club" of sorts tbh haha

Yes, there’s a decent amount of Nintendo games that do occasionally (though rarely) go on sale, but there are over 100 Nintendo-published games on the Nintendo Switch eShop (around 130 now by my count), you know! So what I said—that most Nintendo games don’t ever go on sale on the eShop—is true, I believe! And if not most, then a good chunk of them, at least. Or if they have gone on sale, it was likely one time years ago and then never again for many of them.

And it looks like the price of the bundle in Europe is the same price as any other full price Switch game (going off the UK price, £49.99), which is in line with the US price ($60) and still cheaper than what the games would cost if both were purchased individually without the bundle discount in the US ($70, or £59.99—the price of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom), so you’re still effectively always getting a deal in that sense anyway.

Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 have never gone on sale on the eShop (in the US, at least), either, and they have the same always active bundle deal that the Famicom Detective Club games have, and they’ve been around a few years longer with no additional sales in sight, so I really wouldn’t be holding out for any kind of further discount on the Famicom Detective Club games. Just buy them whenever you want to play them! I certainly didn’t regret it!

FYI the Bayonetta 1 and 2 bundle has been on sale four (!) times in Europe for 39,99€ instead of 59,99€. The last time was this years summer sale that was going on until last week.

Ah, sorry, I wasn’t aware that they’ve been on sale on the eShop in Europe, but they haven’t in the US, at least, according to Deku Deals.

Yeah, I guess it makes sense that a less popular (compared to the ones I mentioned) game wouldn't be on sale often or at all, especially if Nintendo is so stingy with sales. But 60 euro is still a lot for a digital game in my mind (even if they're two really!). That, combined with the fact that I have like 8 games in my backlog and most are visual novels 30+ hours long...

But I do want to play it and I'm pretty sure I'd love it! I'm hoping at some point I don't have any more mystery games to play and I just irresponsibly impulse buy it haha.
