News Embracer Group acquires Bitwave Games, Gioteck, Limited Run Games, Middle-earth Enterprises, Singtrix, Tatsujin, Tripwire Interactive, and Tuxedo Labs

Wonder how this affects their operations.

mod edit:
Embracer Group has acquired Bitwave Games, Gioteck, Limited Run Games, Middle-earth Enterprises, Singtrix, Tatsujin, Tripwire Interactive, and Tuxedo Labs, as well as established a new operative group called Embracer Freemode.

I hated reading these three paragraphs. "We got this! Our subsidiary got this! We also got this!" The day Embracer Group is forced to split cannot come soon enough. This is the kinda shit industry consolidation brings us and I hate to see people cheer it on.

You’d think Europe would have better antitrust laws than the us

What does Embracer actually do where they have all this money for acquisitions? It’s endless with them.
More acquisitions ofc.

Im waiting to see where this all goes tho. So far its ok.

I mean, inherently i dont like all those companies owned by one entity because even if embracer is ok right now one they they might not be.

Is it just me or does Limited Run Games feels small fry compared to, say, the worldwide rights to the motion pictures/video games/board games/merchandising/theme parks/stage productions related to Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit?

...is it really all that? not just video games?

edit: took the two seconds to read and jesus fucking christ

At least, it's how I read:
"Embracer Group AB (”Embracer”), through its wholly owned subsidiary Freemode[1], has entered into an agreement to acquire Middle-earth Enterprises, a division of The Saul Zaentz Company, which owns a vast intellectual property catalogue and worldwide rights to motion pictures, video games, board games, merchandising, theme parks and stage productions relating to the iconic fantasy literary works The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, as well as matching rights in other Middle-earth-related literary works authorized by the Tolkien Estate and HarperCollins, which have yet to be explored."

LOTR is definitely bigger. When I made the thread though, I wasn’t expecting a dozen other announcements, lol.

Does this mean that they will stop being jerkoffs and start being an actually useful company now? Because they can go out of business for all I care. What’s the point of owning physical games when they release shit for over five times the retail price, later blows up in price even more than retro games, and on top of that they have terrible efficiency. Screw making the most use of storage space, let’s make a whole plastic box and blu-ray disc just to put in a 100 MB game in it. Oh it’s part of a series? Yeah let’s put every game on separate blu-ray discs because that’s how it was in the good old days. I know their environmental impact is probably just a drop in the ocean due to their relative size but it’s still unnacceptable to be that inefficient.

If this acquisition just means that they will make physical games for regular consumers instead of only scalpers and collectors that’s good news in my book, otherwise they can honestly fuck off

Personally I think this will bolster LRG publishing and add efficiency to the product. At what cost to the collector item aspect and the historical preservation side of their work, I am concerned. I could see Embracer using their current distribution and production channels to help throughput. Probably also will increase retail access, which was already starting to increase for games with broader appeal (have an Amazon webstore and the Beat Buy distribution of a good chunk of games). Still don’t like the insane acquisition pace that Embracer has.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Swedish government dumping truckloads of cash to them to do whatever they please.

Sweden taking over the world through video games should be one of the most interesting timelines.

An entire country feeding into this actually feels like a plausible possibility with just how much money is regularly being spent.

The name of the company "Embracer" is funny in light of what they are doing, like as if they are destined to acquire as many companies as possible into one family. Truly living up to their name. I wonder if that was their motive in the first place.

Thank you for reading.

Thank you, mazi!

Crazy and worrying development, especially shocking that they got their hands on LotR over someone like Amazon.

All I can hope is that Embracer doesn't go belly-up and take down several people's livelihoods with them. They now employ over 12000 people at over 100 different studios and publishers under several umbrellas. That's about twice as much as Nintendo for example.

I hate excessive consolidation and monopolies on principle but the fan in me is happy that they seem to have an actual interest in making new things with the legacy IP they acquire, like Deus Ex.

Much better than them being sat on by mediocre publishers who don't understand their pedigree to die in obscurity. cough*Square*cough

Preach. Im happy at least embracer wants to put to good use the shit they get, it could be sooo much worse.

Living up to their name, for sure. Not sure I like where this is going.

The purchase of Tatsujin is actually some good news though. Means that they actually now finally have stable capital backing, and another studio that will not only help get their back catalogue re-released on modern platforms, but even help them to revive the Toaplan name with brand new shmups! :D

Just crazy, at this point. Other publishers and funds are going to look at this and think "gee, maybe we should snap up some studios and licenses!" Consolidation running riot right now across arts and entertainment.

Apart from Nintendo, who will nod sagely and go "time to unleash the Stinky Horse."
