While we wait for Metroid Dread, I wanted to remind everyone that Eastward is currently available on the eShop and it's something people should take a look at, especially those who grew up playing games in the 90s. I've been playing it since launch with about 17 hours of playtime and I'm completely enthralled with the setting and world the devs have created. We've all seen from the trailers how nice the pixel art looks. But what I enjoy most is the sense of place this game provides. The cities and towns are richly detailed. The character are quirky, weird, and full of energy. It's clear the devs have a love of the 90s. It feels like they took an environment from a 90s anime and lets you free to explore it on your own.
If I had describe the game briefly, I'd say it's a bit of Zelda mixed with the style of Earthbound. However, unlike Zelda where you are continuously pushed to new environments, Eastward makes you linger an each environment for a while. There will be times where you can go over an hour without any combat or any real new exploration. You'll spend that time running around town talking to NPCs, doing story stuff, and getting to know the towns inhabitants. I think this where the game is at its best honestly. I have some criticism of the game. The combat is just ok. I have had several crashes. There is awful stealth segment. But being in this world makes up for that.
If you're looking for something to chill out to with a hefty sense of nostalgia, Eastward is worth trying.
