News Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake new trailer, coming to PC and consoles November 14, I&II HD-2D coming 2025 (UP: new content confirmed, see threadmarks)

Has anyone done any theorycrafting for thier party yet? I really want to try the monster wrangler class.

I'm thinking this so far.

Hero
Mage --> Sage
Monster Wrangler --> Warrior
Priest --> Martial Artist

What is your starting party going to look like?
I haven't thought about it yet, I'll probably go with whatever I need/want when I'm playing. But maybe it will be something like:

Hero
Mage or priest > Sage
Mage (or whatever class gives most MP and magic) > Monster Wrangler
Warrior > Thief or Martial Artist

If jester is fun, I might try it out.

Jester is not fun lol. They goof off and lose their turn a lot and cause chaos! Only good thing about them is at lvl 20 they can change class to Sage without having the special item.

You keep your spells!? You keep half your stats!? So this thread is how I learn that changing classes was actually good in III, and they just made it absolutely suck in the later games where you're encouraged to do it constantly for... some reason?

I know, I should have specified I hope they make them fun in this game. If they make changes how certain vocations work that is.

I'm assuming they've removed the special requirements for sage class. So hopefully it's easy to get any character to change to sage.

That's why 3 is the best one

Also since now fighting classes gain mp there's no downside from going from a magical class to fighting ones.

Do keep in mind, the game internally keep notes of the distribution for each class stats, so pretty much until your character reach the current level when you changed class, you are not going to see increases except for the main stat of your current class ( so for example if you go from warrior to mage, you are pretty much only going to see gains in mp and int. All the other stats will be 0 gain for a while)

I heard that we might get more info on this game on Sept. 4th. I really hope that we get a demo, I would love testing the classes with all the different customizations before release!

Hey, y’all. I’ve been developing a Dragon Quest itch (lol). I’m eager to get myself in the series with this game, but I also wanted to give XI a try.

Should I wait for DQ3 or have XI be my first experience of the DQ franchise ?

XI it's a great way to start, but it's also a longer game, so I would say it depends on your time. Also while they are adding a lot of QoL to 3 and expanding some elements. it's not deviating that much from the original one, so the narrative is simpler (not a bad thing of course)

It's a great entry, but I would probably not recommend to start with XI just because it's so extremely long. It took me months to finish or something, my brother went away to college and came back and I was still playing it. Tbh the availability of any of the other games isn't great right now though. If I'm not mistaken, 1-3 have dodgy-looking Switch versions that will likely be made irrelevant by the new ones, 4-8 only have mobile versions, 9 is completely unavailable, and 10 is still Japan-only. You can at least emulate the DS version of V easily enough if you have a decent computer, probably.

And yeah, 1-3 are originally NES games and have a much more minimal story than later entries. Not that DQ ever has a big focus on "plot", but later entries will generally have more proper characters and involved, memorable scenarios. A lot of people will talk about Dragon Quest vignettes, these short stories revolving around a particular location, and I believe those start to become a much bigger thing around IV or V.

Remember, once you're in you'll never get out...

I'd say most games are good for new players. Except DQVII... Which anyone should absolutely play, but it's so long I wouldn't recommend starting with it.

Personally, I'd say wait for III HD-2D remake to release. Unless you really want to start a game right now. XI is also a great game to start with, so go ahead.

If you have access to all the games. Do try out the remakes on DS. Starting with IV. They're also excellent, and V is personally my favourite game and best JRPG I have ever played.

DQ11 is an amazing game. definitely play it

Thanks for your replies, everyone!

And yes, I’m tempted to start with XI!

My first DQ was Sentinels of the Starry Skies, but I couldn’t get grabbed by the game, tbh. Plus I never played it properly, just dashed through everything. So I’ve been meaning to give the series a proper try

I think you should try XI. III might feel similar to IX for you since the party members aren't characters, they're just slots you customize. XI has a full party of colorful personalities.

XI demo is like up to 10 hours depending on quick or slow you usually play games and the demo carries over to the full game. Just can't do the 16 bit mode. Don't even have to spend money then!

I've never finished IX myself, so for what it's worth I wouldn't say it not grabbing you is really indicative of the rest of the series, because it definitely doesn't do it for me.

On the one hand, they had something going with most of the stories being tragedies with the recurring themes of greed and loneliness. But they just got way too caught up in what they were doing with the multiplayer elements. So much of it is awkward versions of ideas that would be done much better later and ideas that only make sense in the context of a pseudo-MMO thing (which it no longer is due to all that stuff being long shut down), and the DS can barely even run it. I've never gotten further than the Swinedimples boss, and trying again earlier this year reminded me why. There's just so much grinding necessary in order to even stand a chance, and the way they did overworld enemies is like the worst of both worlds, it might actually be less effort to grind metal slimes if there were random encounters. I think VIII has a lot of similar growing pains, with XI kind of being the fully formed end result of much of what both games introduced, but it holds up way better on a technical level and it feels a lot less like work.

DQXI is so, so good, one of my favourite switch games. 🤔 probably my second favourite rpg on the system but that’s no bad thing, I’ve played dozens and that’s the only 80+ hour rpg I’ve ever played through twice

It’s just so full of heart and good vignettes. You’re always doing something new and fun, and the world isn’t overly big, there’s always something interesting nearby. I like the simple item crafting too

Oh cool! Did not know the demo was long and carried over! Thanks for the headsup

Thanks for your detailed posts, everyone! I’m convinced to giving the DQ franchise a try~

Put me in the “dragon quest XI is one of humanity’s greatest achievements” club too. Incredible game from start to finish, easily in my top 10 favorite games ever made and everyone should play it.

I’ve been pre-emptively anxious about the best time to class change, which is something new for me, worrying about game mechanics on a game I haven’t bought yet :D

Ugh... Do I pick this up on day 1 or sometime down the line.

Regardless, Team Asano producing is just a seal of quality at this point. So glad I'll get to first experience DQ 1 through 3 (or possibly 3 through 2) in what is looking like such a brilliant adaptation.

Adding clothes under the bikini armor is so funny. It changes almost nothing about the impression it gives, it literally just looks like someone realized it would be uncomfortable to wear and tried to fix that.

There's never a bad time to change class; the pacing and enemy levels scale really well. There is a kinda natural way to work this by changing one at a time, and when they are close to getting to the level of the party, you can change another one and so on. Doing it this way you'll have all 3 characters with class change by the end of the game without having to grind

But also, changing class is completely optional; all the previous versions are doable (and not in a hard way) without changing class ever. The game even gives you some tools to complement your party (mainly the sage stone) at the end game
