Absolutely insane achievement for Team Asobi. A small team of 60 employees that made this masterpiece in just 3 years!

Man, more I see this list, more I think about how GTA4 ended up there. Okayest GTA ever, all the uncontrolled hype leading up to game's launch date caused everyone to overrate the game.

Congrats to Astro Bot though, Team Asobi deserves every bit of appreciation. I hope the folks who shuttered Japan Studio down see this.

I never imagined a non-Mario platformer getting rated like this. Unfortunate that I have a hard time justifying dropping a ton of cash on a PS5 for one game.
Sony should release a new Astro game every year.
Astro Bot 2, Astro Bot 3, Astro Team Racing, Astro Bash...

It's nice knowing that even in the current state of the industry, a smaller team can still get together and make a huge critical hit. Hoping it sees a PC version somewhere down the line; I love 3D platformers and I don't think there's been something like on such a caliber since Odyssey, but I'm not exactly in the market for a PS5 purchase right now.

I'm seeing a sentiment from posts here and also some reviews that there aren't many great modern 3D platformers outside of Mario, and I really feel strongly that this isn't true. Pseudoregalia and The Big Catch: Tacklebox came out within the last year and both have wonderfully expressive movement options and fantastic platforming. There's also Demon Turf/Neon Splash, Spark the Electric Jester 2/3 and 99% of the games by Siactro. Lots of variety between these games and I'd be surprised if fans of the genre didn't enjoy at least a few of these after giving them a fair shot.

That said, Rescue Mission and Playroom were also some of my favorite 3D platformers in recent years. I am very, very excited to play a full length Astro adventure this weekend!!!

I think for a lot of people indies might as well not exist. Penny's was this year!!

If GTA 4 were to ever get re-released, it would not get nearly as many 10/10's today.

Sony in shambles that they can't turn this into a big budget live-action movie or prestige TV series

In all seriousness, good for Team Asobi. I just kinda wish their big hit was an original IP that could stand on its own instead of "hey look, it's our BRAND"

Thankfully the consensus is that this game absolutely stands on its own. The references are just a cherry on top

It does concern me how rarely people play outside of the AAA releases. It reminds me of people who say all current day movies are disappointing, yet they only ever watch the Hollywood blockbusters that cost $200m+ to make. There are whole worlds out there to explore! Lots of small independent artists need all the support they can get!

I will lol hard if this game wins the tga this year like some are already saying in the other side.

Why?

A year filled with studio closures, issues with games releasing in troubled states due to ballooning budgets, strenuous timelines, and mass layoffs sees the Game of the Year awarded to a 3D Platformer Mascot for the first time in history. A game that was developed by a small team of passionate developers.

What a success story it would be

I seriously hate this argument. It already was an original IP, this is Astro Bots third game. And nobody complains when Nintendo franchises crossover.

This is such a tired argument that is pretty exclusive to Nintendo fanboys that this just brushes upon console war nonsense.

I dunno, it would be like if in Splatoon 1 still featured Inklings but every set of gear was based on a Nintendo IP and every weapon was based on a Nintendo IP or even controller like the N-Zap and S-Blast are. Like yeah it would still be a new IP but it would be heavily reliant on old stuff, which some people might find lame.

Although now this makes me want a Splatoon weapon based on the Wii Zapper.

Even just brushing aside the fact that Mario Kart and Smash Bros are Crossover The Franchise, there's games like Links Awakening and Super Mario RPG where other franchise characters make an appearance, various consoles appear in games like Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart, and Luigi's Mansion, and there's a million easter eggs to other franchises in various games. Like Nintendo fans should be the last people complaining about cameos lol

This isn't the same argument at all. The powerups (outside of a select few) are entirely unique to this game, the enemies are unique, it's mostly just the collectibles that are brand themed. And this isn't the first Astro Bot game, it's been around for a while now.

I think the PS5 being a spaceship or whatever is cool and charming, in a way that the Wii remote was the “Form Baton” or Sheikah Slate was a Wii U gamepad, it’s the collectible characters that I could do without.

Well that’s literally the point of Smash since the beginning, and I don’t like it much for Mario Kart either. But to be honest for single player games I like to feel more immersed in a world and this kinda takes me out of it 🤷‍♂️

And I find the LA and SMRPG comparison to be a bit dishonest. Those are easter eggs, far from one of the main hooks of the game. And BotW has like, what, one DLC sidequest that gives you Xenoblade 2 outfit? It’s not really the same thing at all. I also absolutely could’ve done without any of those, so it’s not like I’m praising that while criticizing Astro Bot.

At the end of the day though I doubt it will affect my enjoyment in a huge way. I probably wouldn’t mind as much if Rescue Mission hadn’t started the series without that stuff before it was added in. It was an amazing game on its own and I’d rather they built out from that, but it’s not terrible or anything.

With BOTW, I was referring to the main device being essentially a Wii U/Switch. Just like how Luigi’s Mansion has a Virtual Boy menu and you can drive across a DS in Mario Kart. But fair enough. I guess I'm just a little tired of every discussion about this game being kinda bogged down by people complaining about the cameos.

Because Nintendo has been making stellar platform games for years and the western awards platforms have been consistently ignoring these games .
Uhh, Super Mario Odyssey got nominated for GOTY in 2017 and that's the only game that might have deserved it.

Odyssey was nominated in 2017, Wonder in 2023.

If they bothered to make another 3D title since Odyssey it would’ve also been, but they didn’t.

Odyssey is more fun to replay than Breath of the Wild and possibly the best in the genre, sure yeah. But Breath of the Wild is rated more on the first impression/experience/novelty of the concepts.

And that's what annoys me. The way the entire world in Rescue Mission looked like was... way more enticing? I don't know why they decided to change the world design, when it had so much potential.

Another point is the game also needed a lot of iteration and retained talent, from the first Astrobot VR game through the other projects, all the way to here. Peak takes time. You can see it in Fromsoft, Nintendo and Campcom recently, iteration and retained talent is how you make good games.

I'm very excited for some AAA scrimblo.

Few of the indie 3d platformers have done much for me outside of hat in time, many aren't just small scale, but outright lowest viable product. Which is fine, and good even. Teams have to release games to get money and keeping projects small is fine. And smaller experiences let them find their bearings. But after hat in time I was hoping for a bit a breakout like Metroidvanias/roguelikes and to some extend 2d platformers got. We haven't really get there yet (Penny is pretty great though). We haven't really had an equivalent to say, a celeste moment imo. Not that devs of the those games wont iterate improve, experiment more, maybe increase scope.

Also I hope team Asobi member berries Song even harder if they make another Astrobot.

They've been nominated, but they always got overshadowed by the GOTY winner of that year.

In this case, Astro's only competition is Rebirth and that game isn't particularly big in the gaming landscape.

In Mario's case, it'll get overshadowed by GTA VI next year
