Ousama Ranking/Ranking of Kings, is genuinely such a good anime that's ongoing right now!

The art style might make you think it's a childrens show, but that's not the case!

It's about a tiny giant boy who is deaf, who is gonna be king! The cast is big and so good too, I care about them all! The plot slightly gives off GoT vibes, but I haven't read all the books of that yet.
And it's 2nd OP is one of, if not, the best opening I've seen! Literal chills everytime I hear it, I can never skip it!

Anyways, I definitely recommend it if you're looking for something new to watch!

Shin Steel Jeeg - 1
I'm liking this so far, especially since it's a direct sequel to the manga complete with building on the cliff hanger(he goes off to fight in centaur form and the manga ends. The anime kicks off by having 50 years pass and it turns out Jeeg triggered basically a barrier around the island by accident and sealed both sides in, separated from the rest of the world). So pretty fun from that angle , curious to see how it develops. It definitely helps that unlike when they adapted arc, Steel Jeeg was a single manga with a pretty easy to encapsulate story so even to a newcomer it shouldn’t be hard for the basics to be covered quickly.

Modern crew is a fine but pretty straightforward set of characters. OG Jeeg’s partner being alive(though that hasn’t been explained in story yet, it’s just obvious) and her granddaughter taking her role is another nice touch.

I can also tell from my series knowledge it’ll be super depressing when OG Jeeg shows up and he hasn’t aged a day due to him being 95% machine and realizing that for all intents and purposes he’s immortal… that’s gonna be a nasty gut punch I can see coming

I’m excited the third Love Live group, the Nijigasaki girls, are getting their second anime season on April 2! A lot sooner than I thought! Their first season was the weakest Love Live season, but most of the characters were fun and a lot of the solo songs were quite good (Setsuna’s and Rina’s are the best!). I’m interested to meet the new characters this season, though I think the show did have trouble already with the big cast compared to the first two groups. Hopefully it works out?

On the complete tonal opposite side of anime, I recently watched all eight Attack on Titan OVAs on Crunchyroll! I had seen the first two prior and the goofy second one with Jean is still far and away my favorite, but I think all eight were pretty good. My favorites from the rest were the Levi origin story ones No Regrets. It was cool seeing the underground city which you don’t see in the main show. I don’t really get why him and Erwin became such good friends after the events of it, but it was cool otherwise.

Since I put it together for elsewhere
Order is a touch arbitrary but here we go

—Anime Series of the year 2021
  1. Rumble Garanndoll - just a well executed mech show that does something of its own while still having plenty of parodies and homages of mech and otaku culture
  2. SSSS. Dynazenon - lots of great character work, the cast is fun, and it builds on some stories from Gridman without being reliant on it
  3. Getter Robo Arc - a direct adaption of a 20 year old unfinished manga that’s the fifth entry of a series that’s always got reimagined over adapted happening is wild enough, but it’s also done with a lot of passion (even if the 2d suffers from the budget the 3D is well done). SRW is also freed of Armageddon while getting a ton of original material intended for it while still fitting organically
  4. Muteking the Dancing Hero - a fun adventure with a lot of soul, well executed messages about being who you want to be and expressing yourself while recognizing your right way may not be someone else’s. Continuing a trend of Tatsunoko reboots taking some core concepts and making something well done and new with it
  5. The Saints’ Magic Power is Omnipotent - I have a soft spot for Isekais. But overall it’s a fun story of a woman who instead of being annoyed about being passed over decides to find a role in the new world she’s in and contribute. For the most part it’s a pretty chill and low tension show but even when it amps up it feels decently executed
  6. Welcome to Demon School! Iruma Kun S2 - classic Shonen fun, great dub and just a lot of fun stories well executed
  7. Vampire Dies in No Time - comedy is super subjective but this one manages to do some really satisfying pure juvenile humor, with some surprisingly touching side stories and a solid dynamic in the main cast. It also has fun with the side characters. Plus John is the best Nunumu
  8. Dragon Goes House Hunting - I love a show with a fun twist, a good dub and a casual pace so the adventures of timid dragon Letty trying to find a home was right up my alley. Just a satisfying background watch
  9. Banished from the Hero’s party, I decided to live a slow life in the countryside - The actual slow life part of the show is cute sweet and satisfying including a cute romance for the MC. Now if only they could have trimmed the adventure side plot with the hero a bit it would be higher. I actually really like the world building with the skill system and how it’s a curse for the sister and I liked the idea of the plot for that and it’s not a bad dynamic for the show, it just could have been handled better. Mr crawly-Wally was fun
  10. How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom S1 -falls a bit into my junk food category but the world building on this one is super satisfying. Even with it setting up a harem, it’s done right as it is a feudal system and that was a thing in the real world(though that is coming into play more now in P2). But yeah it’s just an interesting enough setup overall

Bunch of stuff announced for this year I’m excited for, Reincarnated as a sword and The Wrong Way to use Healing Magic are 2 big ones

Also Hinamatsuri was super cute, gave it a watch this week

I wanted to write up a list sooner after seeing your list @Mandos , but had a bit on going on and needed the time to write a longer post. My number one pick is set, but I feel the rest of the list shuffles around a bit every day lol. It’s more what I cared about more than debating quality. Anyway, here’s my top 10 favorite anime of 2021!

1: Magia Record Season 2 - After a middling, but still good first season, Shaft spoiled us with movie tier animation and extra surreal visuals for the first four episodes which still cropped up here and there in the next four. A lot of the bigger decisions to deviate from the source material I strongly disagree with (especially with the game shut down in North America), but that did make it more exciting and overall these eight episodes were so cool to see and meant the most to me last year. I hope the ending this year will be good whatever it is.
2: Re:Zero Season 2 - I loved getting to see the tragic backstories of all the characters and the huge confrontations and reveals were super cool. If the stronger first half aired this year where all of the emotional, brutal defeats happened and all of the mysteries / pieces of the puzzle were laid out, this would very likely be my number one pick. Still seeing everything resolve was awesome! If we never get a season 3 (which we probably will), I’ll forever be happy we got what we did.
3: Dr. Stone Season 2 - I love this show! Solving problems with science is just super fun and giving Senku and his friends a huge challenge like toppling Tsukasa’s kingdom gave everyone their moments to shine. I was always excited to see what would happen next. Also Senku’s out of nowhere line about Super Mario tripping balls with mushrooms was my favorite line of the year lol.
4: Love Live Super Star - This one is super hard to place because Liella’s journey is just getting started, but I really like the characters so much (especially the main character Kanon) I put it up pretty high. Super Star looks amazing (they finally got a worthy budget!), some of the individual stories were a lot of fun, and I loved the humor and silly faces. Also the music is awesome! Some of my favorites are Start!! True Dreams, Mirai Wo Kaze No You Ni, and Shooting Stars.
5: Uma Musume 2: This was no joke one of the most fun sports anime I’ve seen even with the outlandish premise. Season 2 had a much better main character and story with Teio as the focus and there were a lot of great side characters to root for like Rice Shower. The drama was over the top sometimes, but I was invested. The big moments all stuck with me.
6: Girls Und Panzer Das Finale Parts 1, 2, and OVA: We finally started getting the Girls Und Panzer Das Finale films in America via Blu Ray releases and these have not disappointed. It’s essentially getting a second season of the show in movie quality. It turns out there is still so much more to see of this weird, lovable world and plenty of awesome, intense tank action to have. My favorite part is from the OVA which had a truly amazing and hilarious long term joke payoff. Can’t wait to see more!
7: Attack on Titan The Final Season Part 1 - Mappa killed it taking over and often elevated the source material. The fights and action were cool and the voice acting was stellar. Might have placed higher if it cut off a little later in the story. Knowing where it was heading effected my enjoyment too, but I care about too many of the main characters for it not to be a favorite.
8: Star Wars Visions - I really enjoyed Star Wars Visions! A lot of these shorts were just a ton of fun and forgoing any need for canon made them all the more fun and exciting in a way Star Wars is seemingly no longer allowed to be. I especially liked The Duel, The Twins, Lop and Ocho, and The Ninth Jedi (iirc on the name, the one with the lightsaber maker). A few of these I’d love to see made into a full series and I hope they do another set of Visions down the line.
9: Thunderbolt Fantasy Season 3 - Definitely a step down from the peak of season 2 (it felt less adventurous), but man this show is still awesome! The cast is amazing. Bummed two of the best villains got taken out, but season 4 asap please!
10: So I’m A Spider So What? - I loved this show a ton for the 3D spider half. Aoi Yuki gives a stellar performance and carries the whole thing. Shame the show catches completely on fire at the end as the 2D Human studio gave up.

My favorite non-2021 anime I saw last year was Hajime No Ippo. Can’t recommend that show enough. Just so much awesome energy, amazing boxing fights, and great lovable characters.

@xghost777 Girls und panzers is in my backlog actually. I watched Re zero S1 DX a couple months back…. But couldn’t continue because I get super effected by a certain trope erased from existence really really does a bad number on me. also I did enjoy Spider but I liked the manga more so it didn’t slip onto my list. Want to watch Uma musume but I got a hefty sub list already

Also in the current season I’m watching realist hero, genius prince(tho I think I’ll need to check out the manga, I hear the anime skipped a lot), Arifettu, Miss Kuritsu, Reincarnated with a fantasy knockout(which is hilarious btw), and Dress up Darling(dub)

The Crunchyroll Funimation merge is super exciting! When I finally subscribed to Funimation they literally announced the buy out ten days later lol. So I didn’t get much use out of it, but I’ll be happy to cancel and stick with Crunchyroll which I’ve had for like a decade now?

We are supposed to have 80% of Funimation’s library up by the end of the month. Today is definitely a slower start than I would have expected. Yu Yu Hakusho and Cowboy Bebop are the two biggest up so far.

I just reupped my month but I don’t have an active crunchy sub so I’ll get that nice 60 day trial so alls balanced out(and I’ll wrap up my current watches on funi so I can just setup a to watch sub, dub, mecha, and current season lists to clean things up, without trying to find my place. I’ve only got 6 shows I’m in the middle of outside of current stuff).
Gotta double check my budget but I’ll probably grab the $80 gift card premium sub for after the trial ends.
Least it means I won’t have to choose between the 2 for the shows I want to focus on next season XD between this and Hidive I have access to most of it. Couple I’m looking forward to next season. I know sword reincarnation and Wrong way to use healing magic are coming this year but I don’t know which season

Next season is looking pretty good. I’m looking forward to Kaguya Love is War Season 3 (had no idea it was this soon), Love Live Nijigasaki Season 2, and if it comes out Magia Record Season 3 for sure.

The moment the last show in my Funimation queue transfers over I’ll cancel on the spot. Down to 14 after today. Anything that isn’t on Crunchyroll after April I’ll make it a priority to watch.

I'd believe it. Sentai's profits are a quarter what they were just 5 years ago. Cannot imagine the series is going to continue unless Donbrothers ends up being a runaway success.

Shin Steel Jeeg - finished
Boy that was a really fun watch, one of the best of the dynamic reboots though this one doubles as a retconned sequel. Outside of one episode that overfocused on the MC’s perviness(though it was all in his head not him causing physical harm to people… he turned the Mach drills into boobs when he was docking with them). Jeeg 2 was a great design and Steel God Jeeg was definitely a top tier final form. Was a fun ride overall, wish they’d put it in SRW again.

Ok I think this has to be one of the best fantasy world, world maps I’ve ever seen(and totally in tone with the show, Ordinary guy reincarnated with a fantasy knockout, which is great btw). Object shaped maps are nothing new but this is top tier

finished demon slayer up to the end of the train arc (watched both the film and the 7 episodes)
i gotta say, i was a bit let down by the train arc. it's visually good but the writing is really sloppy at times. the ending was well done tho. now unto the "entertainment district" arc.

Sheesh Spring is busy
Let's see on my list for next season, Love after world domination, skeleton knight in another world, hero joins the demon lord's army, it's tough to be a mob in an Otome game, healer girl, RPG real estate, don't hurt me my healer, Shamiko 2, Shield 2, And Bookworm 2.

Might have overlooked one or two, and there might be one or two that are spring but not confirmed yet. Some of these I may wait for a dub if they get announced quickly…. Boy a ton I want to watch, thankfully most of it should be on crunchy/Hidive

I’m only a few episodes into each so I can’t say too much on them, but I started watching some new shows lately! I’m watching Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai, Odd Taxi, and The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls. Enjoying all of them so far!

Also very excited news broke this week the final season of Magia Record is confirmed to drop all four episodes on April 3. The ending song, Music Box, will be a collaboration between ClariS and Trysail and will make the cut for ClariS’ sixth album a few days later. ClariS is my favorite Japanese music group so I’m super excited for their next album!

Also have to mention tomorrow is Discotek Day and my fingers are extra crossed we’ll get more Hajime No Ippo and Symphogear on Blu Ray.

I think the implication seems more like, we've been going for 46 years and like any long running show, the season could be our last, so its up to us to do the best job possible and continue the legacy thats gone for almost half a century - I'm sure its possible but I dont think they're saying it is immediately on the chopping block. I would have to wonder if changes being made in Power Rangers situation have something to do with it too...

Same thing with Jetman, the production crew thought it might be their last season so they went all out. Safe to say it became an instant classic and saved the franchise. How fortuitous that Toshiki Inoue is back for DonBro after already writing Jetman 30 years ago.

I also think for the last few years Sentai has just had a harder time occupying a niche that makes it stand out from Kamen Rider. Nowadays Rider seasons basically have as many Riders as a Sentai team, but with way more toys, and more complex storytelling that allows it to appeal to older audiences as well, while Sentai is like, almost exclusively for 5-11 year olds nowadays, Rider being more like 8-14. Ironically the recent charts indicate Sentai is currently at a 20 year low for toy sales, which was last occupied by... Timeranger, which was less popular with kids due to its more complex storytelling.

It will be interesting to see if they can truly push the envelope with Sentai going forward. There was a big post earlier from the producer going more into this, about how in an age of big superhero movies and Rider's changes over the last 20 years, Sentai needs to change too.

The main thing over everything is that Sentai is in the roughest spot it's ever been in. The show has had a precipitous drop in profits over the past few years, and unlike the Timeranger situation which rebounded literally immediately with Gaoranger, Sentai's current drop is less "flash-in-the-pan failure" and more "even a killer show with that anniversary boost like Zenkaiger cannot save this" kinda situation. It is dire.

There's no way to know for sure why, but if you ask me, someone who has been reading bandai financial reports for about a decade at this point, I can speculate a few major factors that I think have lead to the current situation

1) Evidence is mounting that Power Rangers is going to be getting away from Sentai footage/material. This is a whole other kettle of fish, but it's pretty clear to me that there's evidence on both the PR end and the Sentai end that the business of adapting Sentai is probably nearing it's end. The short version is this: Hasbro clearly has big plans for some form of PR Cinematic Universe judging by their statements, and let's be real: you don't make a show about Japanese Folklore hero Momotaro with his crimson-assed gorilla friend and long pink bird man and Shadow the Hedgehog if you're even remotely thinking of selling the footage to the West. That simply does not make sense. This is not a Shinkenger situation, where Samurai/Kanji are a maybe more Japan-centric idea that might be a tougher sell, you just would not get away with the SaruBrother gorilla suit on American TV.

In any case, selling that footage was clearly a huge money maker for them, fueled the franchise's production during low points like the aforementioned Timeranger's historic profit dip. Where Timeranger was a lower point, Power Rangers was so big that Disney was about to buy it and then promptly forget about it. A lot of people like to emphasize that PR and Sentai are different shows, and that is usually true, but you'd be mistaken to think there was not money going from one to the other.

2) Japan's birth rate has been declining for decades and that means there are fewer children to watch the show. Sentai (whose official target demo is actually like 3-6 year old boys and I'm not kidding) doesn't have the built-in older audience that Rider has so they don't have as many adults tuning in. I think it's also worth noting that, where Sentai is in the roughest situation it has maybe ever been in, Rider is doing better than it ever has.

Look: Toei does not like to work internationally. Any longtime anime fan could tell you this. Do you know why they've been selling international streaming rights in the last year or two for Rider? Because public companies need to show growth to investors, and Rider has seemingly reached total market saturation in Japan. There simply aren't very many people in Japan who WOULD buy into Rider stuff left to sell Rider to. Their profits have remained strong for years but they aren't moving, upwards OR downwards. Rider is going international out of business necessity.

(You won't catch me complaining, as I just framed and hung my Kamen Rider Zero-One Blu-Ray Pre-Order Bonus Poster in my office literally today)

But all of that is to say: it's not hard to think that, like @Mekanos said, Rider is kinda eating Sentai's lunch. It's got more toys, more characters, and often tells "working together" stories that USED to be Sentai's bread & butter better than Sentai can because they're not stuck to the "we are a team of 5 from day one" formulas of Sentai.

SO all of this is to say: I DO think Sentai is going to go on hiatus for a bit. Maybe not directly after DonBrothers, Shirakura might have a few more ideas up his sleeve to try before that, but I genuinely do not know if it makes it to 50 shows in a row.

THAT SAID

I don't think Sentai is done forever if it DOES go on hiatus. What I think will happen is they put the series on ice for a bit. Maybe whip up some non-franchise one-off toku shows or anime or something to maintain the time slot. While the series is on ice, I think they workshop some ideas and really come back strong with what I'd consider "Sentai's Kuuga moment."

wow I've typed a lot

anyway Sentai is good but I do think a break would be good for them. Zenkaiger has been great (I gotta get back to it) and DonBrothers seems like it's wild (in a maybe good way?) so it's nice to see that, but it's clear they haven't moved the needle financially and that's where it counts the most. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens!

Also I have no empirical evidence for it but the impression I get in Japan at least is there is a healthily sized young adult/adult audience for Rider, with enough who are willing to shell out big bucks for expensive figures and other merch, similar to shows like Gundam. I don't sense that from Sentai, I think adults are generally nostalgic for whatever Sentai season(s) they grew up on but very few follow modern Sentai in and out like they do Rider, unless they have kids maybe. Frankly PreCure seems to hit most of the notes Toei would want Sentai to hit nowadays.

but yeah, it would be healthy for Sentai to go on hiatus. You can't keep a show going for almost 50 years and not run into burnout.

Yeah I definitely think Hasbro have plans for Power Rangers that don't include Sentai (which we'll probably see as soon as next year and that definitely figures into how Sentai operates if they arent getting a licence fee from America endlessly to pay for their own productions.

Rider is absolutely the bigger deal now and of course, Anno is not adapting Super Sentai for his universe, he's adapting Rider (and not at all surprising given as you said Power Rangers/Sentai is very much for 3-8 year olds)... but Rider doesn't have much cultural cache outside of Japan (yet?) so its a trade off I guess

Today’s Discotek stream is ongoing, but I’m excited we already got a Symphogear GX bluray announcement! I also hope we eventually get the next two seasons, but season 3 is essential and cemented my love for the show. I checked out Symphogear to begin with after seeing the extended opening scene where Hibiki punches through the mountain.

Still praying we also get more Hajime No Ippo.

Edit: Stream is over, no Ippo update. Hope we get the other two series in the future.

I was watching it last night. Definitely glad to see Lupin part 1 get a may date and also nice to see Prison of the Past get an announcement. Beyond that i'm interested in the Case Closed movie, A-ko 2, Astro Boy. Not a bad stream at all.

Unbelievably excited for Japanese Digimon to get a US release. Adventure is a classic through and through, and I'll give a kidney to get Tamers too.

I just hope the subs are better than the official ones Toei had a while ago.

Ousama Ranking ep 22 was a bit questionable 😅
but I'm interested in the next arc set up, too bad we won't get to see it since the anime is ending next week.

Is 2022 the year I find out what a JoJo is? Should it be?

I mean the next thing that David productions is adapting is more hype, they’re doing a 4 cour of the best of Urusei Yatsura(Lum’s show; also translated as Obnoxious People) manga

Yes, it's a great series and the anime adaptation is very good, improves on a lot of the issues in the manga IMO (which is also great in its own way). If you like convoluted superpowers, a strong sense of continuity, and a good mix of camp, humor and hardcore violence, then you can't go wrong with JoJo.

As someone who is not particularly fond of anime, JJBA is heads and shoulders above the medium as an exceptionally well crafted piece of media. Though not to sound like a complete and total piece of pretentious trash: I do prefer to read it as a comic/manga than to watch it. It's a well made tv show, don't get me wrong (you'd be hard pressed to find a bad piece of media that has passed through Yasuko Kobayashi's hands) but me personally, I prefer the pacing/structure of the printed work just a lil bit more.

me? watch tokusatsu? absolutely not

I've heard good things, but no, I'm not watching it at the moment. I'll watch it about 2 years late and say "wow y'all see this? it's good"

i'm watching jujutsu kaisen now.
i'm absolutely loving it, 10 episodes in. this is way better than demon slayer imo. while that was pretty to look at, the story and characters were honestly too dumb at points, probably aimed at a much younger audience. while jjk is also goofy, it's way more interesting to follow the story and i'm more invested in it.

I think Revice will definitely be a great binge watch. The way the plot ramps up with each episode is done really well, basically no screentime is wasted and the demon gimmick is a lot of fun. Plus it has by far the best female Rider in the franchise (which is damning with faint praise but seriously, Sakura is great).

I'm about to go watch the movie in theaters actually. I haven't seen Demon Slayer (most people I know say similar things about the characters/story) but JJK is solid for sure. The way it explores life and death is pretty cool too, for a shonen series.

Also I missed it when making my list the other day but ut is definitely on my anticipated list for next anime season next month now, Ya boy Kongming! Looks really fun. Ancient tatican gets reborn/teleported inyo modern day Shibuya and becomes the manager of a budding singer

Demon Slayer was incredible this season, and Shaman King was highly disappointing (And ending soon). I still need to watch JoJo Part 6, but I'm waiting for the entire part to drop before starting as I've already read the manga.

Otherwise, nothing in the upcoming season for me other than maybe Spy x Family. The Summer season is looking decent with Devil is a Part Timer S2, Vanguard Will Dress and Lucifer and the biscuit Hammer (I can't believe this is actually happening)

I finished watching Odd Taxi last night, it was awesome! Definitely deserves all the praise it got last year. I really like tight 13 episodes shows and this was definitely that. Good mysteries in each episode and I liked a lot of the characters. Largely satisfied how it wrapped up though I don’t think it needed the everyone wasn’t animals twist even if it worked out well.

Wanted to share too icymi, a ton of Sentai / HiDive shows are leaving Crunchyroll by the end of the month. Wish they announced it sooner, nowhere near enough time to get marathons going.

In better Crunchyroll news, the Funimation transfer slowly continues and we got Nichijou back this week!

I got Hidive half off back at Christmas so doesn’t bug me much. And yeah that’s one more off the funimation finish list. Think I’m down to Starblazers, Deadman wonderland(dub) and Yatterman night

Gotta say, this is my second Tatsunoko revival show and even with my very light knowledge of the source material it was quite a trip. After really enjoying the Muteking reboot thought I'd give some of the others a go since they've been doing these reimaginings since Tekkaman Blade in the 90's. Unlike Muteking this one is a Psuedo Sequel tho. The setup was satisfying, the villain reveal was great Dorukobey was so petty and overkill XD this being the journey of not just the descendants of the lackeys of the original story but also them helping create a new duo of heroes was super satisfying. Also a perfect example of using the original theme at a major turning point. Only real complaint is we only saw 3 of the Yattergods in action. Tons of Eastereggs both to the original show and a Speed Racer tribute/cameo even! Leopard was definitely a solid MC. Had a lot of fun with this one. Think Gatchaman crowds or Casshern sins is next. Should be quicker since they have dubs

Another consequence of Sony purchasing them :( I was a free member for a few years until I finally subscribed. It was such a good entry point for people who can’t afford anime and got more people on board with both Crunchyroll and anime in general. Very shortsighted.
I guess they're assuming the gain in subscribers will be worth the people they lose to other streaming services (or most likely piracy), but I agree this feels like a bad idea in the long run because of how much more accessible it made anime. This does at least only apply to new/continuing shows, so there's still a lot of old content people will be able to watch for free, but it still sucks regardless. They should include Crunchyroll with Spartacus subscriptions.
