StarTopic Anime |ST| Is Captain Falcon more anime than Fire Emblem?

Oh hey Funi picked this up so it’s got a western name and trailer

Starts on the 5th

Dai is awesome, adaption is solid, they’ve been really smart on the battle cgi(honestly a show with a run like this is a good pick, constant output, plenty of time to get used to it and improve).

The fact that these main characters seem to have partners that look like they should be helping magical girls has me interested. Never really watched mechas, so I hope this one is good.

FYI that’s the digital manifestation of their onboard copilot AI’s. Their physical forms are just trapezoidal boxes. This definitely falls more on the real side

BTW, Mecha Anime falls into 3 main groups,
Real: more focused on the world and politics, the mech is just a machine, and to some extent “normal” technology. Doesn’t preclude pilots having strange or unusual powers though. Gundam of course is the original and flagship of this genre.

Super: The stories are more personal to an extent. The robot has a special trait that makes it unique(Alloy Z, Getter Rays, feeds off emotions, is alive, is unknown technology). The pilot can influence the battle and the robot through sheer force of will and the foe is almost always a world ending threat. Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Steel Jeeg, G Gundam, Planet With, Gurren Lagann all fall under this one

Fantasy: This is a slimmer genre but it’s very much it’s own thing. It usually kicks off as either a portal story or Isekai where the protagonists get teleported to a high fantasy world, asked for help against a greater foe and pilot a machine that goes anywhere on the scale of we stole earth tech for controls and fused it with our magic for ridiculous power to the “robots” are physical constructs of magic formed and powered by the will of the pilot or creator. The reason I used portal story is that they generally aren’t one way stories, there’s generally a way back. Only real exception is the more recent Knights and Magic which went pure reincarnation and is mecha dev porn. The big 4 examples of this one are Aura Battle Dunbine, Vision of Escaflowne(has a series and movie version), Magic Knight Rayearth(has a series and movie version, was originally a Manga. Is primarily a Magical Girl show), and Cybuster(super robot wars spinoff. The games are legendary, the anime sucked and took all the personality out of the cast).

Though if you want one of my fave mecha anime’s to give a watch Dai-Guard is top tier, and really unique. It’s a deconstruction of running a more “Super” type robot in a “real” robot world. So the costs of running and supporting it, the politics of control and an enemy who’s a force of nature all come into play. Oh and it’s an HR firm of a company running the robot. Great opening theme too

I ended up watching the first episode after making my post. It's still funny to me how magical girl those AI avatars look.

Also thank you for the break down of mecha genres. Do you know what Gundam Build Fighters would be classifyed as? I refer to it as a Toy Battler, but what would it be in terms of mecha genres?

It falls into one of the more general sub genres, simulation game(like SAO, Bofuri or .Hack) the stakes/challenges are all in the game(not to say there can’t be real world consequences but that’s not where the majority of the plot happens). It’s not a mecha sub genre

Not to be confused with simulation which can be a fun genre but one I don’t want to specify an example of because the twist that most of the characters are artificial constructs created for a simulation can be one of the best twists but there are multiple mecha examples

Basically the Mecha genre can play on any genre so not everything fits in a Mecha sub genre persay. That’s just the 3 sub genres that are specifically mecha

Watched Muv-Luv Alternative yesterday. I’ve watched Schwarzes Marken (Irisdina best girl) and Total Eclipse before, but I haven’t read the VNs, so I had general knowledge of what the BETA are and the timeline.

I liked the first episode. The CG and animations are not bad but could be better. And as always the design of the TSFs is amazing. The strong point of the series in general is that it always sets the stakes showing how overpowering the BETA are. That happens in Schwarzes Marken and Total Eclipse too (the first 2 episodes of Total Eclipse are amazing in this regard) but sadly both shows by the mid-point devolve into a human conflict throwing the BETAs to the side.
Let’s hope that does not happen again for a third time.

Also watched the Finest Assassin reincarnates as an Aristocrat. It was solid for the most part, but the goddess at the end was just plain bizarre with her form of speech. Rethinking it, it wasn’t bizarre or weird or cringe, it was plain stupid, I hate when they have these characters that speak with verbal tics for no apparent reason… /rant.
Still, it‘s an isekai, and the gf loves isekai, so into the watchlist it goes…

This season I'm only really watching Eighty Six. I tried watching a couple other first episodes like Blue Period's, Digimon's and Kyoukai Senki's (which has the worst possible english name), but none really caught me. Might give them a second chance at some point (Kyoukai Senki in particular was really disappointing though, the mecha designs are pretty cool, I might even grab the model kits at some point but the premise and execution were just bad all around.)

Also watching Turn A Gundam alongside The Great Gundam Project. Fantastic show.

I just finished Turn A about a month ago, great, great show, easily a top 3 Gundam for me. It's so weird watching a happy, fun Tomino show.

I mean there’s Xabungle and Daitarn 3 that can be upbeat and not completely grimdark

I was thinking more Gundam shows but yeah.
There are upbeat and slightly lighthearted Gundam animes? Which ones are those?
Turn A, ZZ's first half, G, and the spin-off stuff like Build Fighters and SD. Though I'd describe Turn A as more Ghibi-esque as it's whimsical and charming but as the story goes on does become more dramatic. Definitely less so than the majority of the series though.

Good news for those of you who wanted to see a Kamen Rider film in a theater.

(It's also going to be available for streaming on January 2022, alongside the full Kamen Rider Zero-One series.)

Ok I am officially hooked on ascendancy of a bookworm. Also Loving Lupin Part V’s standalone throwback episodes and using the coat color to indicate era and style

Is this the manga thread too?
While things aren’t crazy busy yet, Manga probably deserves its own ST, people can be loose with spoilers and since a lot of anime are adapting on going manga that can result in some nasty mixups if people aren’t careful.

Well then, to keep it in topic, here is the best manga being adapted this season:

I don't know how the quality of the adaptation will be (only the first episode dropped), but that's for sure the strongest source material.

Build Divide: Code Black - 01

They really taught the rules! Thank god this not another Wixoss
I've seen the actual TCG in action and it looks....bad, but I hear the anime is pretty decent. Should check out EP1.

I'm watching the second season of Beastars in Netflix. I miss the OP of the first season already :(

That deals extra damage trigger is really questionable tbh. Is this..... Dark Souls of TCG? /jk
The Buster trigger is the main source of gripes and frankly, it deserves the hate its getting. Its trying to emulate the excitement of randomness that other, more niche Japanese card games have, without any of the benefits.

Posting just to say that Sonny Boy soundtrack is absolutely excellent.

Weeks later and i'm still thinking about that ending...

(My first post on here is a TCG post, of course lol)
Yeah, in general among TCG players, the Buster Triggers are the game's most unique mechanic, and not in a good way. Can't wait to see someone get OTK'd in a live match from having all Buster Triggers and getting them all triggered in one attack.

More on topic though, gonna try and catch up on a lot of stuff over this week. Finishing Kageki Shoujo (PLEASE watch it y'all), catching up on Ghost Game and 86 and starting Heike Story.

Vampire dies quickly 2
Ok that editor of doom had me laughing. Also the other Vampire XD. Poor John tho

I think this season is a bit Quiet thus far, only really watching Mushoku Tensei, though there's a lot of questionable choices with this one

Me: wants to engage with tokusatsu fandom here on FamiBoards

also me: doesn‘t keep up with modern toku at all

also also me: doesn’t want to get lost in Anime talk

nothing but love for anime fans but I think Tokusatsu should maybe get it’s own thread? I feel like they’re different enough to warrant their own spaces

Shrug I got asked to include it. If someone wants to make one feel free. Someone asked due for the overlap and things being quiet for now and we’ll I kinda walked into this being the anime ot to start with so it doesn’t bug me.

Also finally got in the last thing I had backordered, got it on sale quite a few months ago, wanted a more standard shonen for my physical collection and the premise had me curious

Frankly it’s nothing on you I just feel bad wanting to come into a primarily anime thread to say

More people should watch Ohranger! It’s a great show and it gets an undeserved bad rap!

I watched the first episode of Carranger which I had heard was and could definitely tell was an intentional parody on the normal stuff. And dude one of rules makes a dang Garo reference

I've seen it in theaters a few months ago.

Cherish every moment of that masterpiece in its true form. There was so many outstanding moments: the Asuka fight is visceral, Misato's last words are moving, the audio mixing in the Instrumentality sequence is like being wishepered directly into your ears.

If love anime, or if you have any passion for the art of cinema, it's something you HAVE to see even you don't like Eva. It's a fundamental moment in anime and sci-fi history.

Early thoughts on some stuff I'm watching this season:

Digimon Ghost Game: Unpopular opinion, but I for the most part enjoyed Adventure Colon a lot, it was a lot of fun. That said, very happy to have a brand new cast and show concept. Hiro is great and Gammamon is THEE cutest thing. It's early but I'm excited for the potential.

Demon Slayer: Fun Rengoku episode to start off the movie recap, he really is so likable and I'm glad to see him again. I'll be itching for the Night District arc to start I assume next year.

Senpai ga Uzai Kouhai no Hanashi: Love DogaKobo's work. The manga is fun and their standard bouncy animation elevates the comedy and fluffy atmosphere.

Blue Period: Though I don't hold any blame over the team since I know it's mostly out of their hands, it's always a shame to see a great and beautiful manga get a shoddy anime adaptation (Kono Oto Tomare, House Husband, Berserk 2016). The material is strong but for a show literally about art, it needs that deft touch and striking visuals. But Yatora is my son, I'll follow him anywhere.

Taisho Otome: Saw a screenshot on Twitter, watched the first episode, and tore through the manga. Very sweet romance, I loved the overall direction and tone of the first episode. Both Yuzuki and Tamahiko are adorable.

Now I just need to catch up on PreCure, I'm very behind.

Wait... Is season 2 of Demon Slayer out?
Yes, the first episode came out on Sunday!

The visual quality of that first episode does have me nervous, but I do think that it was a decent premiere. Even if the art and possibly the direction does falter, I have faith that the strong source material can carry it. I thought they did a good job with setting up Yatora's character and making him likable.

I don’t know how I missed this thread so far…but anyway hi! I love anime a ton! I haven’t seen anything from this season yet and nothing is really calling out to me so I probably won’t be in here too much for now, but next year is looking cool. I followed the thread to not miss any posts.

The only show I’m watching right now is Love Live Super Star which ends with episode 12 in a few days as far as I know. I love the main character, Kanon, a ton and now that the group is assembled they have good dynamics going. The songs have been great and I’ve been enjoying getting them off itunes as they come out. Last season my favorite show was definitely Magia Record Season 2 which felt like a return to form for Shaft even if it fell apart towards the end. It’s different from the game which I appreciate, but the game was way more focused and endearing. They diffused a lot of the conflicts in weird ways so I’m very confused what Season 3 will be though I have theories if there are any fans here. I also enjoyed Season 5 of My Hero Academia for what it was. It definitely suffered for bending over backwards for a movie release…that we still don’t have. Hope the film will be cool, but I’m not comfortable going to the movies right now, so I’m probably waiting for the Blu Ray release. Last thing I saw was Blue Reflection Ray which was pretty poor overall and went off the rails with a disturbing last minute tragic back story. I guess I’m ready for the sequel game next month? Yay?

I recently finished watching the Devil May Cry anime on Blu Ray. I really can’t recommend it at all. Dante is bored out of his mind for pretty much all of it and any time the action picks up it cuts away every time. Hopefully the Netflix anime adaption by the Castlevania people will turn out better whenever that comes out. Not really sure what I’m watching next. I didn’t get to My Next Life As A Villainess Season 2 or Dragon Maid Season 2 at all last season so those seem likely.

This anime season has three sequels I'm super stoked to watch!
Them being: World Trigger S3, Eighty-Six 86 S2 and Kimetsu no Yaiba S2!

Other than that, Takt Op looks gorgeous as well so I'm interested in that one as well.

I lowkey think splitting the topics in 2 threads would be better too (but that depends on whether anyone is willing to make them haha)

Don't watch a lot of anime, more of a manga maniac, but pretty excited for Chainsaw Man and Stone Ocean.
Also, I've watched a good percentage of existing tokusatsu films, but not only a bit of TV toku action. Love Ultraman, Ultraseven, Liveman (my fave), Jetman, og Kamen Rider, and KR Fourze.

What size would you say your dreams are.

I've fallen off the current Ultraman but I'm extremely pleased with both Rider and Sentai right now. Revice been extremely solid for its first six episodes and Zenkaiger is just a breath of fresh air every week.

As far as anime goes I haven't kept up with anything...basically ever and I have a giant list of stuff that I really otter watch.

I've been liking the new Love Live series a lot too. I'm not traditionally a fan of the series, but the characters are really charming and I think the smaller cast works really well in its favor. Music has been great too. It's

Not sure how into other idol shows you may be, but there is Selection Project and Pride of Orange this season. Selection Project seems pretty good so far, but I haven't checked the other yet. Premise sounds goofy (hockey meets idols), but so did Uma Musume and I ended up loving that series. So I'll try it out.

I've seen Belle today (I've also had the pleasure to meet Hosoda by the way!)

The movie is a visual masterpiece, quite possibly the best looking anime movie of all time (I'm sorry Shin Eva, you have been outdone this year). The world of U is a stunning reimagination of the internet perfectly portrayed by scene full of details that will make your eyes climax in every single frame.
Belle/Suzu's voice actress did an outstanding job and I feel sorry for every VA that will have to dub her, her interpretation and her singing are impossible to match, she made me tear just with her voice.
Note of honor the songs, they are outstanding and memorable, I'm gonna loop them on Spotify for a while.

I don't want to say much on the story since the movie won't be out worldwide for a while, but for me personally Hosoda managed to take the classic "Beauty and the Beast" Disney story and elevete it to a new level, making it more modern and surprisingly different to the original in some aspects.

The movie is also quite western-friendly without losings its Japanese charm, and I'm thinking this is gonna be year Hosoda is going to get recognized as a great director outside of the anime niche.

That’s cool! Yeah I do like other idol anime though I haven’t seen too many. I was at least going to try out one episode of Pride of Orange since “cute girls play hockey” is a silly premise. I want to know how intense the hockey gets and if they have hockey goons lol. I also liked Uma Musume especially the second season!

Love this review I definitely gonna add it to my anime backlog.

The movie looks incredible visually.

It’s a movie that should definitely be seen in theater, the very first montage is stunning and framed so wide you need the biggest possible screen to soak in all the details. And the audio mixing is really, really good.

I'm still bummed about them re-telling the Demon Slayer movie as TV anime. That movie was beautiful and my first theatrical experience in over a year so it was a very special watch. Not interested at all in watch a sliced up version of that. Mugen Train will always be a movie to me. Now we have to wait longer for the next real arc which sucks.

Need to finish up My Hero now that the dub is finished.

Also hype that Stone Ocean debuts later this year, just hop that the dub isn't too far behind.
