This one tiny shot from the new Avatar movie teaser is making its rounds on twitter for a weird reason I can't quite pin down.

The narrative around it is that the CGI is incredible because it looks indiscernable from reality.

But... that is reality. Right? I'm not getting that subtle uncanny feeling from any elements in that shot. That's a real arm tightening a real strap in some real water.

At first I thought it was a bit. Something like, "let's gush about how realistic the CGI looks in one particular scene of a CGI-heavy movie that happens to be completely practical". Honestly, that's a good bit. I chuckled softly.

But then there is the thread I linked above. The comments got me all turned around. Who is doing the bit and who is being honest? It's practical, right?

Aren’t all of the Na’vi (I think that’s what they were called) CGI? Were there ever shots of the people in make up / costume from the first film? It must be a real hand green screened / CGI’d over right? The water is probably real in this shot.

Look at the left thumb, the one in the hand holding, not pulling

Liquid simulation is pretty standard in the industry. This is just the AAA version

Not only that is easier to make cg water when a cg character is interacting but we had realistic wet stuff back in Pirates of the Caribbean 2

And avatar 2 is an animated movie.

This is entirely CGI. The water is fluid simulation. This was a trailer shot, definitely had more work put into it than usual.

The movement is unnatural. I've seen movement exactly like it in other full-CGI footage. The water is also too clear and too limited in its movement. The patina of the entire scene is also lacking the fine detail and variability found in practical footage. The weakest point in it is the edges of/the shadows under the straps.

That said, the fidelity is still out of sight. I'd say it's 90% of the way to my gold standard, mental ray photon mapping:

I've seen so many episodes of VFX Artists React that I don't doubt any possibilities of CGI anymore. Some of the stuff artists can do with water sims breaks the mind.

Corridor is gonna have a field day with this movie, I swear.

Okay, I'm convinced. I've been bamboozled.

My brain still says it's human hands pulling something real with CG coloring and water, but I believe you.

I'm really looking forward to the behind the scenes.

If this is CGI it's actually scary because that looks super real. Crazy how the technology is improving and leaving the uncanny valley behind.

It's 100% Practical.

And 100% CGI.

They are using layered video sheets, linen created by weaving pixels and micro cameras into the thread, and then draping the sheets over the character and environment and having the pixels run the CGI footage, while filming.

I would not put it past Cameron to try something like this

It's CGI, it's just incredibly good looking. What gives it away for me is the thingy on the bottom of the gif, the lightning looks a bit 'off' to be live action.

Just take a look at your average V-Tuber. An random, ordinary person has access to extraordinary facial tracking and environmental rigs to create lives personas of themselves that are shockingly accurate.

Now, imagine that, but you are James Cameron, who has limitless amounts of Disney Dollars, a crazy dream to make CGI not only look as good as reality, but better, and with such hit successes that no one can tell him no. Imagine the amount of tech and manpower he has compared to that V-Tuber, or even other movie producers. And there you go.
