StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

I had a rather dire thought that came to mind. This is just a weird corroboration of ideas and trends.

My random thought is Nintendo being in the process of being acquired by Apple, but more a merger than a full acquisition to get around the Japanese Acquistion company laws. Please hear me out on this crazy idea. I am thinking the merger is in the preplanning stage and only those in charge of both companies know what is going on.

So, Apple is going hard into games, more so than before with Apple Arcade being a big thing still, letting full games, some including games like Shantae 5, and others. Apple doesn't really have a studio to make games internally for Apple Arcade. A lot of high-quality indies are on the platform but there doesn't seem to be a killer app. Nintendo has a great wealth of IPs and with Nintendo Pictures and their own acquisition of an animation studio, Apple can start producing their Nintendo content internally especially with the overwhelming success of the Super Mario Brothers Movie. With the Writers' strike going on and Netflix going into foreign content to get around the strike. Apple having a foothold into content that can be produced with little involvement of US unions, could work well for them.

Nintendo devkits being sent back, Nate doesn't specify what capabilities this devkit had and some are even thinking it might be the T239. There doesn't seem to be word of any new devkits, which is weird for a chip we know a lot about. Even if there is new devkits being made, it would make sense for replacement devkits to have been sent out. Otherwise, I'm not expecting any Switch 2/Pro exclusive games for another 2 years, if lucky. T239 looks to be awesome, from what everyone is saying in this thread, I want this new T239 switch to come out tomorrow, personally.

Nothing major is coming out after Pikmin 4 so far, if there was something then it would be trumpeted or teased before TOTK. Nintendo is putting out updates with their NSO games. We still aren't sure what is exactly going on with Prime 4, especially with positions to work on that game were still up as of 3-4 months ago for some positions that should've already been filled.

Apple's M1/M2/M3 Silicon is rather impressive and games like Resident Evil 8 can run on it without too many issues at least compared to the PS5 and Series X, MetalFX is not as impressive in some cases, but it does show Apple does have an advantage with getting newer nodes before other companies. Apple is rather cash flush right now, rumors of Disney being acquired might come true, but at this moment Disney is floundering in terms of stock price and future prospects. With pulling in Nintendo their gaming workflows with Metal can be further improved with Nintendo's internal studios and development stacks.

I don't actually think any of this will actually happen, but it is weird thought that came to mind.
This is INSANE, so insane I believe that you're an insider leaking something, or you ate something a bit past it's off date lmao, assuming the former 🤔

Also Disney's being acquired? Since when?

It's Mario Tennis Ultra Smash time! I know it's controversial I feel that a lot of Mario Sports games are kinda soulless and rush jobs. Before anyone destroys me, it doesn't mean you can't have fun with it!
I kinda feel this way about most of the Wii U's library tbh. Really bad era for Nintendo

That’s basically a console 🥴

For exactly that, you can get anything from the Switch family of consoles: Lite, OG or OLED
This is what Sony have said is their strategy though, upselling more expensive accessories to existing, brand-loyal customers (like those other super expensive premium looking Playstation earbuds they showed off in the presentation) rather than trying to increase their existing customer base. They're utilising their existing, strong consumer base to grow and extract more revenue.

Anyone who thinks the Q Lite is anything more than a side project/accessory is mistaken. It's not meant to target the Switch market, just for those who want a more premium way to do remote play than on their phone which likely has super wide screen which is also small. The Q Lite has an 8 inch, 16:9 screen which gives it the premium reputation.

Kind of. I'd say some of the Wii U library is good, as evidenced by how a decent amount of the Switch's best sellers are literally Wii U ports like MK8D, BOTW, Mario 3D World, NSMBU, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. It just has a much, much smaller selection, like the N64 did.

Be as it may, I find it funny coming from Sony who axed their own IPs in favor of leaning too much on 3rd parties and Western developers. Whether one sees it as a practical decision or not, I just want to imagine a world where Jumping Flash on the PSVR2 was at least in testing or how Ape Escape would've fared if a non-PS Move game hit the PS3. Heck, Legend of Dragoon Remake wouldn't be a bad idea either.

It's just WEIRD Sony fingerwagging Nintendo about brand momentum when Nintendo's been giving treatment to things like Fire Emblem, Pikmin and Advance Wars while Sony's most notable exclusive for this year may arguably be a 3rd party franchise that graced the world on Nintendo's console if not the comic book character whose licensed games used to be platform agnostic. I mean if they wanna talk about brand momentum, there's receipts for what happened with their own.

But hey, best of luck pushing Remote Play in what appears to be an attempt to eat Nintendo' Switch's lunch boys.
It's because Sony can afford to do that, basically no one buys a Nintendo console for 3rd parties, they buy it for Nintendo exclusives most of the time, the 3rd parties are just a small optional bonus. What you're observing is just what Nintendo has to do to make their ecosystem attractive to consumers each gen, hence why the Switch succeeded since it brought the exclusives/tentpoles that consumers wanted at the time.

That way, you don't have to do like 5 posts next after each other. ^^

Honestly I am banking it all on Nintendo now these days. Only console maker that makes me excited for gaming anymore. Sony burned their last bridge with me so I'm out. Hand the easy win to Nintendo boys.

That last showcase was just an utter misfire and the investment charts of what Sony is now investing in (60% live service, 40% Traditional) and the fact they want to make 12 live services, wasting immense talent from multiple studios to dive in making soulless, predatory, cringe, utterly devoid of what made their brand in the first place just make me incredibly depressed thinking that this what they want to focus on under the leadership of Jim Ryan.

It's like if Nintendo decided to invest heavily in live service and instead of games like TOTK or Super Mario Odyssey or Metroid Prime, Pikmin, Fire Emblem, etc you had Metroid Hero Shooter FPS with Battle Pass, Seasons, had Mario Kart with MTX for new characters and Karts (like Tour but you paid $70 and only got six characters and 12 courses), Legend of Zelda but Gacha and so much talent being utterly wasted on propping up ideas and games like that.

Just being able to play a game like Tears or Metroid Dread or Super Mario Odyssey and being able to play a VIDEO GAME, completely, utterly, pay once and just...play a game, get lost in a game, be able to escape without being preyed upon incessantly...it's sad that is meant to be refreshing. I know there are countless indie titles that I greatly appreciate for this as well but to think of how gaming used to be and what it's become now is just something I've never been able to accept or get over. I miss the good old days badly...and I'm only 24. I cherish the fact I got to grow up when gaming was exciting left, right and centre all the time and new horizons were around every corner each year. Should've cherished it more to be honest.

Nintendo can come out with anything, even remasters of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess has more soul behind it than some of the shit I was seeing and will continue to see this gaming season of reveals and trailers.

Drop Metroid Prime 4 and I will pledge my allegiance to the Nintendo Ninja's themselves.

Everyone made it too easy to make Tears my GOTY so far. So much passion behind it, it drips from the console itself. Also one of the best Gannondorf fights, I was grinning ear to ear.

Oh and obligatory #Team2023. The apocalypse could happen and I'd still keep the faith Nintendo would release it rather than let it be lost to the apocalypse forever.

No offense but you're generalising a LOT there and Nintendo is certainly catching up what with amiibo (glorified MTX), releasing games and then finishing them later (too many to name since Wii U gen into the Switch gen), paid online, gacha mobile games, artificial scarcity (Mario 3D All Stars anyone?), day 1 updates and arguably relying more on remasters and remakes than a lot of us would like them to (but most of the industry is doing this too tbh). Not to mention stuff that they were already infamous for like their insane IP protection. They just avoid all of that bad behaviour for their prestige/tentpole series like mainline Mario, Zelda and Metroid (to a lesser extent, we all know about Federation Force lmao). But to turn a blind eye to it is to let them get away, and gives worse results for us as consumers.

If we step outside of AAAs and first parties, everything is much better so don't worry. Indies are the lifeblood of the industry atm and I'm there for it.

I am confident Iger will bring the ship back on track. Thus Disney is too big of a Monster. It would be massively more easy for Apple to purchase Warner Bros Discovery, when they are continuing on their track of failure. Flash and Aquaman could break their neck.
Or Paramount, would be also a good fit.
Both (10/15bn) are WAY smaller as 20th Century Fox back in 2017. (30bn) Disney is at around 150 bn, that would be even for Apple a big fish to swallow.

Mario strikers battle league crushed me. Probably the most disappointed I've been about a sequel. I loved strikers charged and played it a ton in college online and got really good with a buddy of mine doing doubles. And then like 16 years later they FINALLY release a sequel and it just plays like garbage and doesn't feel fun at all. Way too technical for a Mario sports games, character variety is terrible and really boring stages. So bummed. Hopefully we don't have to wait another 16 years for a great arcade Soccer game on Nintendo.

Makes sense. Assuming that the hard-core gamers of Sony are those that bought the PS five in launch date, then about 1 million consumers would perhaps buy accessory.

Our entire data center family of products — H100, Grace CPU, Grace Hopper Superchip, NVLink, Quantum 400 InfiniBand and BlueField-3 DPU — is in production. We are significantly increasing our supply to meet surging demand for them,” [Jensen Huang] said.

I hope there's space for Drake!
I know I'm sure there will be ;)

there will be. Nintendo would already have an allocation of wafers for them

This thread whenever a game is slated for Fall 2023.

I support it though
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for Drake 😨

No, I will not. I've been hearing people peddle this idea since the days of GameCube and it never sits right with me.

Nah it's socially acceptable to hate on the Wii U nowadays lol
You do realize some people are making comparisons between Sony's Remote Play tablet and Wii U to be "matter of fact" and not to dunk on Wii U, right?
I was a such a proud owner, I refused to pick up BoTW on the Switch just to enjoy the system's last hurrah.

The only reason why I comment on it is because PS5 doesn't have a "true" handheld and even I defended Sony's reasoning from a resource standpoint even though the consumer might not get the mileage they expect from it.

Don't see Apple buying Nintendo. If any company would try to buy Nintendo it would be Microsoft.
Considering the CMA said they aren’t part of the market I’d imagine they would 100% approve now 🤭😛

I’m not serious, this is more of a jab. I also don’t want them to be bought

To be clear I'm not saying they would succeed but it's definitely something Microsoft would be desperate enough to try in an attempt to improve their abysmal marketshare in japan.

And I am only trying to rationalize with strange trends in Nintendo with information we know and the supposed drought after Pikmin.
I get you wanna feed thought for fruitful discussion and honestly I don't blame people for drawing parallels between them in some hardware designs either.

I think that it won't be a beneficial or gainful partnership in terms of either company or to their consumers. Nothing Apple does is that special outside of marketing a need for people to have their product or their product design philosophy. Even Nintendo had limits on what could be proprietary to them.

Heck, their M1 and M2 CPUs are still ARM-based despite their branding. I see no reason why off-the-shelf ARM CPUs can't be viable for the next hybrid consoles to come since non-Apple ARM chips around Snapdragon 888 and beyond are hitting their stride.

That's just me though.

So Microsoft's going to come back to Nvidia in that hypothetical scenario (for video game consoles)? :p

On the subject of BotW's install on Wii U, I don't think the system feature they used to do that was even intended for that purpose. Seems like they were probably just abusing a feature originally intended for including game patches on discs.

And I am only trying to rationalize with strange trends in Nintendo with information we know and the supposed drought after Pikmin.
I don't think all the "information we know" is all strictly accurate. At minimum, some of the rumors, especially around devkits getting recalled, seem to be subject to interpretation errors.

I would refer to a certain famous discussion on that subject but last time I did , I got banned from a certain gaming forum…

These things happen. I was banned from Kotaku for telling off an article being late to the party about One Piece's 4kids dub months after Funimation took over.

I've heard things about Era and if it's true about those guys banning at the drop of a hat, I'm truly sorry you went through that.
Me? I don't regret what I did. I'd do it again a thousand times more because the "news" is supposed to be about keeping current.

Wasn't that years ago?

Will never happen, these cultures are not compatible. I have seen some international mergers myself yet, and even Europe/US mergers goes down in flames, but at least in a controlled manor (lets compare it with the plane crashing into Hudson few years ago - plane broken, everyone survives, some heroes. Eastern/Western mergers are doomed to fail massively because of the not compatible cultures, this would be comparable with the Shuttle Challenger.
Basically in the end Apple would have all the Nintendo IPs and name, but basically nothing would be anymore created in Japan, definitely not from old stuff. Meanwhile the former 2nd Parties will grow because the old Nintendo stuff moves there. But the Nintendo we know is dead.

What does the current Nintendo get out of this, though?

I mean I suppose they're similar but not really, Wii U was unique for its dual screen/asynchronous gameplay, Q Lite is a streaming handheld/accessory to the PS5 consoles. It's as tenuous as me calling the Switch a PSP ripoff since it already did the "console games on the go" shtick as well as being able to connect to a TV with video out.

Nintendo been acquired by Apple? are you nuts? they will rater do sepuku they sell themselft to others companies, they even laugh at Microsoft, when they tried to buy Nintendo

might want to come back to reality there, champ
What do ya mean lol. It's something I've noticed a lot in gaming communities, especially hardware specific ones where there's a lot of revisionism, "oh we all thought this way to begin with" (not targeting anyone). Guarantee it will happen in this thread in the future too

Things are about to get very interesting. As the page turns from the Tears of the Kingdom launch, we start to look down the barrel of....Pikmin 4 and nothing else.

Nintendo will have to communicate something big either way at some point in the next 4-6 weeks. Either a new console announcement, or a bunch of big new games for this fall and next spring.

The wii u was a failure from jump street. That was exceedingly apparent. Don't remember the chalkboard memes and shit? The "gamepad looking out the window" memes?

Daemon X Machina sequel announced. The original launched as an exclusive and has remained console exclusive, so it raises a brow that the sequel has no platforms officially announced.

Either it's going multiplatform between PS5 and Switch or it's targeting something new that they can't share yet..........
Powerful lower power usage chipset, but this is on the assumption that Apple buys them.
Nah, I'll stick with Nvidia. Apple would price any Nintendo console into the stratosphere hahaha. I mean, their MR Headset is rumored to cost $2999...
