PlayStation PlayStation Showcase announced (May 24th, 1 PM PDT / 9 PM BST)

I'm hoping this is said lovingly because it genuinely ups my interest in the game lol

tbh I'm overdue for a rewatch of Starship Troopers
what frog means is that Helldivers is like if someone watched Verhoeven's Starship Troopers and unironically thought "wow, someone should have made this into a satire"

Spider-Man showing was fire. Otherwise a CG snoozefest. They need to start selling us on games, not settings. Some indies with promise though, that I probably won't even play on PlayStation lol. But even those are based on pedigree alone because they showed almost nothing

I mean you say that but look at how few release dates there are
That’s why it seems like the 1st real e3. Many new games but few dates. It was like that when the ps2 and ps3 were 1st shown to the world.

Great graphics but we were not shown real gameplay or a real date. It so strange because we are going into it’s 3 or 4 year right?

I'm looking forward to playing on those New York sky islands and uncovering those Manhattan cave system

Overall meh but Spiderman 2 looks great, I'm keen on Dragon's Dogma 2 as well but fave for me is Alan Wake 2.
Lov Remedy and Alan Wake and the sequel looks great, has the same feel as the first one but despite the horror.

Were there any PS5 exclusive games?
Everything seemed cross platform.
Spider-Man, FFXVI

Genuinely shocked at how underwhelming this was. As a State of Play it’d be fine but as a Showcase after two years of silence is was just bad.

The first 50 minutes when people were disappointed I thought it was an overreaction. Some pretty decent third party stuff was shown, including lots of new stuff. And I was certain that at the end it’d be first party studios all in a row as they have done before. Ryan coming in at the end for one more game that was obviously Spidey (which looked good) was a stunner. Shocked that they have nothing else to show right now. And showing off a half dozen GaaS games while showing no big single player experiences we’ve come to expect from them is a huge miss.

Expectation were too high. But that underdelivered no matter how you look at it.

Thank goodness for Zelda.

well so much for setting up the "phase 2" of the ps5
This IS the phase 2 though - Sony showcased 5 first party games and 3 of them are live service games that they plan to support for years (Fairgame$, Marathon, Concord), while the other 2 are either single player (Spider-Man 2) or with optional(?) co-op (Helldivers 2)

This means 60% of their games will be live service, just like they stated recently

Yup, single player stuff from first party is gonna be slim pickings (like one a year or maybe every couple years) moving forward and no, Helldivers is described as a co-op/team shooter that seems to be always online (maybe it has bots but i wouldnt rly call it a single player game by any stretch)

I feel like annoucing it a week in advance was a mistake, if it was two days early like a direct then expectations would have been better I think

Not sure that means titles rather than capital though. I think these live service games are probably better ROI if they pop, but success isn’t always guaranteed. I’m sure they won’t be abandoning single player prestige gaming but things just aren’t ready to show.

they won't be abandoning it, but they'll be spreading it out more and sprinkling the prestige single player content sparsely. one a year maybe, likely one every couple of years - with partnership stuff instead of anything from their first party (and at least two of their big studios will be putting out live service MP games next - Guerilla and ND). I guarantee you they aren't putting money into having more first party studios making single player stuff (see all their acquisitions being MP focused). Budgets will go up for the studios they have, but they will not make more or expand their single player offerings from first party.

I’m not normally harsh on these shows but that was absolutely dog shit

Jim Ryan is Don Matrick 2.0, he just has a larger market share that’s more difficult to squander
Only difference between the two is that Jim Ryan has such an ego. Matrick was just a jv kid tryna play with the pros. Way too in over his head with zero charisma.

What’s funny is I said we should have a poll last week on the percentage of CG only reveals and was told Sony doesn’t do that…whoops

Edgy Yuri Lowenthal as black suit Spider-Man was so funny. God I hate that symbiote shit lol, but at least the suit looks really cool, I love the texture of it.

Putting Lizard in a Kraven setting is a good idea.
Black Cat is shown on the Manhattan map, as if Kraven will hunt her. Hoping she'll be a major player, she was great in the DLC.
I like her way more than the game's MJ.
Please have Goblin do MJ the Gwen bridge death and Black Cat becomes his soul mate lmao

Sony not announcing what some of their studios are doing today =/= the shitstorm that Don Matrick caused for the Xbox brand.

Yeah, this was a bad time to get a ps5.
I'm still waiting for games that I want to buy but I'm still waiting, with no monster hunter until likely 2025 I might give dragons dogma 2 a chance. It really doesn't feel as a console in its third year on the market.

Maybe we get something as great as this from the game.

You all are overreacting....
If you most you own a PS5 for exclusives then don't cause all Late PS4/PS5 Sony games will come to PC. I own a PS5 because that IS my gaming machine.
Third party for me looking great this year, as well as Spiderman 2.

Yes but I want weeb stuff, where are my monster hunter, persona or nier games?

I’m interested in that foam Splatoon game. Splatoon 3 is pretty damn stale and the content updates are in a dire state. Definitely needed something more fresh.

They'll come 3+ years after release, might not even run, and you'll need to spend quite a bit more to play them better than a PS5 would anyway. Not exactly a winning combo.

The presentation was a little up and down no doubt, but I’m coming away happy. Spider-Man 2 blew me away, that looks amazing - pun intended. Alan Wake 2 and Talos Principle II both look so good that it’s gonna make me check out the original games. Phantom Blade looked really cool. Snake Eater confirmed, but gameplay would have been cool. FFXVI and SF6 both had incredible final trailers. Dragon’s Dogma 2 looks like FFXVI meets Elder Scrolls, but it was cool too. And there were some great indie games.

The bad would be all the really boring live service games. And the lackluster PSVR2 showing - when your best announcement is RE4R, which was already announced, and Beat Saber, things are dire.

Also the Q Lite looks hilarious. Like, it’s probably comfortable, but visually it’s a complete joke. I’m happy to stick with my Logitech G Cloud for my streaming needs.

Overall, I’d give this presentation a solid 7. Not great, but not bad. I’m happy.

that game will be lucky to last a year
I don’t know. I think when the game gets stale they can turn it into a zombie game and frame it as some mutated staph infection from unshowered people playing in the foam and spreading it to others. Almost writes itself actually.

Sony announced five new first-party games

All five were live service shooters with none of them being TLOU online and with multiple other unannounced live service shooters.

Probably the bleakest conference from any first-party in 10 years.

Stream of thoughts while watching the showcase:
  • Helldivers 2 has even stronger Starship Troopers vibes now and I'm all for it.
  • I have a soft spot for spellcasting FPS so Immortals of Aveum does look kind of interesting to me. However the "spells" just look like reskins of the standard FPS guns, so most likely giving this a pass.
  • Phantom Blade looks great! Impeccable enemy designs, the movement and combat move look fluid. My biggest concern will be if it controls as good as it looks.
  • TIL that the guys who made ABZU made Journey
  • Cat Quest has always been better than it looks, and I'm excited to see it going bigger budget. Their art style is so lovely.
  • Did Square Enix just announce a Fortnite/Splatoon hybrid? I mean, good on them for trying to create games the JP audience wants. We've been telling JP devs to do that sort of thing for a while now.
  • Plucky Squire looks as charming as ever. I really hope it runs smoothly on Switch. Day one if so.
  • Metal Gear reveal was nice... but no gameplay.
  • Towers of Aghasba is one of those that look like they have a creative setting, but don't have a firm grasp of what their gameplay loop is.
  • FFXVI is the most I've been interested in FF for years, however at the same time I'm still not seeing enough to get me to buy it.
  • I'm happy for Alan Wake fans. I hope AW2 sells a lot, because that means good tidings for Control 2, which is what I'd actually be excited about.
  • I really liked the Granblue Fantasy anime and the game looks pretty decent.
  • Ultros: great aesthetic, and... that's it.
  • Huh, I've heard of Tower of Fantasy before. It was recommended to me on Steam I think. Steam knows I'm a weeb.
  • I really need to play Dragon's Dogma
  • Zero interest in anything PSVR2 so skimmed through all of those
  • What is Marathon even about?!
  • What is Concord even about?!
  • Interested in how the Q handheld will perform commercially. I'm not sure it's gonna pan out.
  • HYPE for Symbiote Spidey. Great blending of cinematics and gameplay. Definitely borrowing a PS5 to play what will probably become my favorite PS5 game.
Overall: Too many cinematic trailers, or 80% cinematics trailers, for my tastes. Most intrigued by Spider-Man 2, Phantom Blade, Plucky Squire and Cat Quest, but I'm getting those on other platforms, or in Spider-Man's case, borrowing a PS5 to play it.

Watching the Spider man gameplay, I have to say I hate that kind of gameplay that constantly goes back ans forth between real gameplay and cutscene. Yeah seamless transition, but let me play the game please. Game seems to be heavy on narrative, so that's inevitable I guess.

I watched this live but didn’t have time to write a big post until now. Overall I felt like this was a weak show that failed to give updates on games we’ve been waiting on (where’s Stellar Blade, Lost Soul Aside, the Last of Us multiplayer, KOTOR etc.) nor did it paint a clear and inspiring vision for the future (the much needed phase 2 of PS5) with too many similar looking games (no narration/pacing hurts), the dreaded CG / vibes only trailers, and a frustrating lack of dates.

It did however have some cool games tucked in there. Finally seeing Alan Wake 2 was awesome even though I’m bummed out it won’t have a physical release. Seriously, please change course here Remedy. I’m also really excited for Spider Man 2 which feels like the closest thing Sony has to Uncharted still in terms of a fun, more light hearted, single player epic. Not thrilled about Venom, but I’m so glad Miles is back. Dragon’s Dogma II was an excellent surprise since that previously felt years away. Both The Plucky Squire and Assassin’s Creed Mirage had some good showings too. There were a few other games that have my interest, but I don’t think made much of an impact here. I have both Street Fighter VI and Final Fantasy XVI preordered so these last trailers didn’t do much for me. Another one was GranBlue Fantasy which I’m already excited about and feel like I learned nothing new about (a release date would have been huge) except its cool they got some of the VAs back from Versus like SungWon Cho.

So yeah weird, disappointing show even if I still walked away with stuff I was excited about. One last bonus thing, not planning to pick up the game, but I love that there was a game called Cat Quest: Pirates of the Purrabean. That’s a 10/10 video game name there lol.

Showcase was terrible but it did have Spider-Man 2 which looks fantastic. Insomniac is the only reason I care about Sony first party right now, they always deliver.

There was that anime mech game that I don’t remember the name of.

I think you summed it up well. It was a frustrating showcase because there are good games in it. Just where they were and how they were "shown" or announced was very poorly done. Trim some of the fat, put all the indie/small games in one tight section, and show off gameplay for a couple of these games (wtf was that with MGS 3 remake????) and you got yourself a pretty decent showing.

Lol really? I have had zero interest in getting a PS5 or anything next gen and was pretty sure I wasn’t going to dive into next gen until I bought a series x to play Starfield. That showcase convinced me I need a PS5

I’m just glad at the vindication of the Wii U gamepad 🫡

I always have low expectations of Sony showings and it didn’t even meet that yeesh

Pretty bummed out that they will not have Keefer Sunderland for MGS3 remake.

Oh anyway, GIVE IT TO MEEEE

Watching the Kinda Funny guys drag Sony for this showcase is pretty telling. I will say some of the reactions are woof. Spider man 2 looks like a PS3 game apparently.

But also, do we need Spider Man 2 to look, um, perfect I guess is the word? There's a lot going on in that game. I feel like some graphical set backs for technical upkeep is a good trade. This chasing graphics nonsense really takes me out of gaming sometimes. Might be the Nintendo fanboy in me I guess where I abide by the gameplay > graphics rule more than anything.
