PlayStation PlayStation Showcase announced (May 24th, 1 PM PDT / 9 PM BST)

I don't get it.

The Plucky Squire (also coming to Switch), Dragons Dogma II, The Talos Principle 2, Sword of the Sea, Neva and that game from the Nights in the Woods makers all look super interesting. Even from a Nintendo perspective no?
Just opinions, most of the games listed there apart from DD2 are not interesting in the slightest to me, Highlighting Neva though, was one of the worst trailers in the thing because it's literally nothing. What is the game, how does it play? Who knows? Nice animation, but as a trailer for a game it was terrible imo.

And just in general, nothing really big. How many first party games were even announced? Not many.

well well well

Just dropping in a quick post to say I'm trusting the process for Bloodborne today.
The process won't always come through when we expect it to. Conviction is everything, and patience is a virtue.

Really excited for Spider Man 2. The 2018 game was one of my favorites from that year.

As for other things... I already knew I was going to get FFXVI. Phantom Blade Zero looks fun, but whether I play it or not largely depends on what else is coming out at the same time. I like the idea of Project Q, but I will need to see impressions/price before I even think about getting it. I've tried PS5 remote play with my laptop and it was very laggy, even with a good internet connection. Never had that problem with PS4 remote play, so I don't know what the issue was.

I'm glad I started watching it late so that I could skip around. I probably would have gotten bored sitting through the entire thing live. I think a lot of Sony events just end up having only a few things that interest me.

If I already had a PS5 I'd be happy with that presentation. There's clearly a lot to play this year.

As someone without one... I do not have much reason to pick one up, as I can play the overwhelming majority of what had me interested elsewhere.

Still, Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake II, Plucky Squire, MGS 3 Remake do look like fun. The samurai game too. FF still looks interesting.

Worst reveal goes to the Foam game. I mean, it’s such a blatant attempt at appealing to the Splatoon crowd, even the “how do you do fellow kids” gif is disgusted by it

I mean, some seemed cool but for all these supposed sequels in franchises I've never played, is Helldivers (2) supposed to riff on Starship Troopers? Is Immortals of Aveum sci fi/fantasy-ish Bioshock? Ghost Runner 2 some kind of spin on Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance? Foamstars is low-hanging fruit. Arizona Sunshine just Dead Island minus the island? Hell, I'll bet ten famicoins Neva is gonna be an Ori type game that'll do it's best to have you crying without a single line of dialogue.

Phantom Blade 0 looked cool though; funny enough the mythological elements are kinda what I expected Ghost of Tsushima to have lol.

Alan Wake 2 I'm genuinely stoked for, but at least I don't have to worry about that coming to PC. Fingers crossed the MGS collection comes to Switch at some point.

Fair. I mean I'm not disapproving of any opinions. Just surprised. Like said in a previous comment, I don't own a PS5, so my expectations were a bit different.

Man, I had considered grabbing a PS5 now that they are readily available, but this made me decide to continue waiting.

From Sony first party we got:
  • Haven (AWFUL looking le anti-capitalism GAAS)
  • Spider-man 2 - hey I get a lot of others like it, but it looked like more of the same to me (boring open world, scripted fights, watered down Batman combat, probably similar non-inventive progression (just fill the whole chart bro), and decently cinematic story (which doesn't matter to me at all.)
  • Wolverine (wasn't shown, haven't seen anything)
  • Marathon - looks great, but its multi-plat
  • TLOU multi (wasn't shown, haven't seen anything)
Am I missing anything?

Then like the MGS reveal thing was boring (for me) because remakes are whatever, boring announcements, but its also multi-plat, as well as the collection.

There was definitely stuff but it was like stuff I already knew I wanted (FF16, SF6, etc.) and just additional trailers.

Just dire.

Making 4k video games was a mistake. The pipeline is collapsing.

I enjoyed the first Spider-Man, this one should be good as well. Sequels reusing their predecessor's map seems like a winning formula these days.
I know this is mostly tongue in cheek but I am legitimately so excited to be able to explore other boroughs

I do think, pound for pound, when you look at the games on show, from Spider-Man 2, to MGS, SF6, FF16, Alan Wake, etc. there’s a lot to be excited about.

There was huge volume of indie stuff that piqued my interest, while Phantom Blade Zero and Dragon’s Dogma looked interesting too.

But I think the show was front-loaded with lots of small games, went on too long and leaned into CGI ‘not actual gameplay’ towards the end. PSVR2 needed some love and I understand why it was there, but I could have done without it.

PS5 already welcomed RE4 earlier this year, Mortal Kombat is coming in a few months…

I think when you look at all the games coming to Sony’s system in 2023, it’s excellent.

However, the presentation itself was a little relentless and oddly put together at times.

That MGS trailer is what happens when you don’t have Kojima at the helm. It just totally lacked the character and imagination you get from him at his best.

I love Spider-Man and the sequel will move monster numbers, but for me, it just doesn’t have that impact of something like God of War.

No Naughty Dog either? Sony Santa Monica have been working on something for ages, where’s that? Where’s Sucker Punch’s next game? A new Uncharted - heavily rumoured to be in development at a different studio - would have been awesome to see.

We still don’t know what their biggest, and arguably, best studios are working on. This was meant to be the big reveal and we didn’t get much in that regard.

Lots of good games, but a muddled showing.

A combination of already announced, niche, and indy games. Interesting, sure, but not what people wanted from this presentation.

This was supposed to be PS5 phase 2. The beginning of true current-gen exclusive games. People were expecting FFVII Rebirth, Last of Us Factions, and other first party PS5 exclusives. All we really got was Spiderman, which we already knew about, and a CGI trailer for a Bungie game that's probably very far off.
Yeah I kinda get that from a general perspective. Though for me personally I liked almost all games in that show, so I just was blind-sighted by own personal preferences to see the bigger picture.

lmao Xbox

Holy shit lmfaooo

I mean, they don't have a leg to stand on either in terms of their first party content but wow ahaha

Also, thought this blurb from the developer's message was pertinent direct from the MGS website:
Simultaneously, we will deliver the METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION series, the most complete compilation that celebrates the 35th anniversary of the series. The METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION allow fans to play the games as they were, as first released on the latest platforms.

I mean, safe money means Steam/Xbox Series in addition to PS5, but with luck it might also include Switch given these are PS1/PS2 games

Sword of the Sea trailer for whoever hasn't seen it because it deserves more attention and I think you guys would like this style of game:

I should really get around to playing Journey one of these days

I even bought it like 3 years ago I have such a problem with buying stuff and never touching it 😅

lmao Xbox

Sony really doesn't need to have the most amazing showing...... They just need to do better than Xbox, and they have shown time and time again, that they can actually release quality games.

Does Spiderman 2 rock the charts off with next Gen power? No. But it looks really fun.

The other things don't really interest me, but at this point, I kind of regret having an Xbox.

Will probably wait just a bit longer, then trade in my Xbox Series S and PS4 for a PS5. I really want a slim model though.

Hope so! Then Volume 2 can have Portable Ops, Peace Walker, Acid and Acid 2, which would all feel right at-home on Switch

That MGS3 remake announcement was such a nothing burger but daaaamn I still got the chills when Snake Eater started to play...

Hot take maybe but I don't even really remember the last time I saw a good presentation by one of the platform holders. They usually feature great looking games (even this one had a ton) but it seems like these things have just become glorified trailer reels with as many games as possible and only the minimum amount of connective tissue. Which has both its upsides and downsides but it seems that nobody is interested in putting on a good show anymore.

Even if most of the games were multiplatform, I felt the presentation overall was pretty good (and I don't have a PS5).

Just kinda thinking out loud here but

wow, not announcing consoles or an exact release date for the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 sure does feel like a tee-up for a September Nintendo Direct shadowdrop, huh?

It's that but also I think I'm just mostly burnt out on game hype and marketing. TOTK is the best game I've played in years and honestly I wasn't really excited for it at all until a few weeks before release. For the last decade or so I feel like I've been mostly playing games at my own pace and discovering stuff years after the fact. There was some neat stuff here but I still can't think of a single announced game by any company I'm actively counting down to - and that's fine.

eh I like the Microsoft June shows for the pacing

they're a good viewing experience even when I don't care about most of what's in them because they just feel so snappy

Spider-Man looking good. Still don’t have a PS5 yet but that’ll be my first game when I get one. Can’t wait to play with the symbiote powers.

Agreed to an extent, but I was never that into the extraneous stuff in presentations, I watch them for the trailers. The Star Fox puppet stuff at E3 2015 was cute but that doesn’t change the fact that it was one of Nintendo’s worst E3 showings, for instance.

Both of the 2020 showcases for PS5 were excellent. That’s where the bar was set for this generation, and neither publisher has been able to live up to it.

Sounds like they'll share more info on those collections later. Like, in a Nintendo Direct? Maybe a staggered announcement like Persona games?

Ac!d 1-2 are not canon so I'm thinking something like PW+PO+Rising. Considering Konami started selling MGR merch again, it's safe to assume the game is about to return.

My main takeaway from this showcase. So good. Can't wait for Itsuno's next masterpiece!

This is also true. I don't even really expect these presentations to wow me anymore, they just are a thing I occasionally tun into to keep up with things.

I'm not just talking about the extraneous stuff but none of these presentations leave any room for these games to breathe and properly show what they're about. They just rush through things because they have so much to cover. That's why the Spider-Man segment in this one felt so out of place.

I don't remember none of that shit

I agree in a way, even though I like most Nintendo Directs (partly because they are better paced and feature genres that I like more), but I think the last really good presentation I saw was the E3 2019 Xbox presentation, came out of it thinking "they might have a real shot this gen", it was a good showing of what they wanted Xbox to be this gen. But in a way it's always a bit easier to make good presentations when you have hardware to announce

Yeah but Acid 1 and 2 are dope so they should put em on there anyway!

Rising is already playable on, at the very least, Xbox and PC (not sure about PlayStation?) so I don’t think it’d get added to one of these collections, but it would be nice to see it ported to switch anyway (and be given the 120fps treatment over on the beefy consoles)

I honestly think it's the diminishing returns, both for hype, tech, and everything.

For Nintendo, there was always that hope for your favorite franchise, especially on the Switch. It was, for so many series, either the first times it's on a home console, or the first time you can play portably. It's also the first time a lot of franchises are in HD. Pre 2017 Nintendo wasnt quite as polished too, and you could tell they were firing on all cylinders. But now, we have pretty much every notable Nintendo franchise, in pretty much their best forms. A Mario Odyssey 2 would be exciting, but it wouldn't be as exciting as the original. You simply can't replicate that nowadays.

Even with their

For Sony too, Ps4 they really hit their stride and went all out with software.
But the thing is, development is taking way longer nowadays, and much more resources, that it feels like a step down. The technical aspects of games aren't holding games back anymore. That much is pretty clear.

I'm in this weird state of mind where I think the games they showed looked more interesting and gamey than an average Sony presentation,

but the actual trailers were pretty mid all around. Alan Wake 2 literally looked like it had placeholder REmake 2 animations for like half of the actions in the game. Dragon's Dogma 2 looked rough visually and didn't have the greatest editing. Marathon looked fine but the fact that it looked so generic modern day Bungie was a bit eh. And Snake Eater didn't show gameplay.

All around the actual games list are fine, not great, but fine, but the trailers were pretty bad after a while.

I don't remember none of that shit
Miles Morales, GT7, Demon Souls, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank, RE8, FFXVI, God of War, Hitman 3, Horizon Forbidden West, Deathloop, Kena, Bugsnax, Stray, probably more in forgetting. If that wasn’t memorable or exciting for you, then most likely none of these ever will be. Which may have been your point, but you can’t really deny how loaded they were in terms of announcements.

Helldivers is... let's call it a tribute to Starship Troopers lol

I was doing literally the opposite lol

Just curious: did you play the first Spider-Man, and if so, what'd you think? Any plans to pick up the sequel?
Too much gatekeeping for the content. Not fun when they had you have to “explore” before going to the next story mission even though you might have finished all of the available side quests and district missions. Since I prioritized the traversal and fights early, often I was sitting with nothing to do until some hidden timer or whatever let me go to the next mission. Also just became “do the same thing but with harder enemies” by the third act. Not enough from the boss fight perspective early in the game in my opinion and too QTE heavy (though I suppose that’s one of the few ways to do set piece battles). Did like traversal and combat. Haven’t played MM to know if that changed but DLC was the same way.

so that's it ??? no Pikmin 4 ???
Was I mad to think Metal Gear Solid was some kind of Pikmin clone/realist looking insects game??
Also, the worst game in that showcase must have been that rich kid influencer foam party Splatoon Clone from SQEX.

Holy fuck, someone actually greenlighted this shit!

Nah, i had enough MGS already.
I mean the foam Splatoon at least looked different than the ten million realistic games. Looks like it'll actually be fun.
lmao Xbox

LMAO I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY ACTUALLY DID TWEET THAT.

well well well
No Switch ;(
Expected tho
Maybe the collection will come later?
Man, I had considered grabbing a PS5 now that they are readily available, but this made me decide to continue waiting.

From Sony first party we got:
  • Haven (AWFUL looking le anti-capitalism GAAS)
Wait, you talking about that game where you steal from the rich? Looked like cringe communist bashing to me rather than actually being anti-capitalist, I got a bit pissed with it.
Making 4k video games was a mistake. The pipeline is collapsing.
Somebody already said exactly that on another thread awhile ago, but I unironically want worse looking games that are less ambitious, take less time to be made, by people being better payed, on a more consistent basis.

Nintendo already released more games this year, during the Switch’s twilight phase, than Sony will during the beginning of the PS5
