NSO Super Mario Advance 1-3 (SMB2 USA, SMW, Yoshi's Island) announced for NSO Expansion Pack May 26th

I remember playing the first one (SMB2) a lot, the other 2 not so much. Still a good way to get all of them out. So does this means we could get Super Mario Bros Deluxe?
I think that’s almost certain to show up. We’ve got Mario All-Stars and the Advance games now, so they clearly don’t have any issues with overlap. Which is one of the strengths of this being a subscription service, they can pull out redundancies and curios for the service which may have been harder to justify with the old VC service.

I’d really like it if they also release the non-DX version of Link’s Awakening if only because there’s some minor aesthetic changes which I find absolutely fascinating.

And I still think it should be possible for them to add OoT Master Quest from the GC since that was an emulated ROM.

That would be pretty clutch, especially as the 3DS Master Quest has several changes to it so it would be nice to preserve the N64 version.

Honestly, this is the perfect time to throw those games on the service. Everyone is playing Zelda so any NSO update for the next couple of weeks will have a smaller impact than normal. These games were bound to be added eventually so just throw them all out at once instead of making one of them "game of the month" in June.

I remember speding a lot of time collecting red coins and the yoshi egg for SMB1DX, an the race minigame was also good

Looking at the preservation side of things, I wouldn't call these a waste.

It'd be weirder if they never showed up, as Wii U Virtual Console had all four games.

If (when) this game comes to GB NSO, the online link cable support will be so good. The multiplayer race mode with the switches was so fun

I didn't play Super Mario World on SNES, only on GBA (and then not to the end) so I'm sure there are others for whom these versions are the ones they remember. And there are reasons to play them even if they are for the most part the inferior versions for screen reasons alone - namely the game play tweaks and added content. Sticking them on the service now is a smart move to keep the releases constant while not burying anything under the ToTK avalanche.

What's sort of odd is to see the Nintendo ouroboros eating itself. Having remade games in the past in order to capitalize on nostalgia and maximize output for their portable consoles, they're in a position of having to re-release multiple versions of those games on their nostalgia service which fills in the schedule for their portable console.

They're gonna put Zero Mission on NSO eventually, which has Metroid, a game that is already in the cheaper tier, as an unlockable easter egg, meaning Nintendo will let you pay lots of money to emulate the GBA which is itself emulating an NES in order to play a game that Nintendo will also let you play for cheaper without having to beat a whole other game first.

What is the sound of one hand wanking?

I honestly liked the voice clips in the gba ports, I didn't realize opinion on them was so mixed.
I think it's mostly on Super Mario Advance 1. The characters talk for so many actions. Toad in particular can sound very shrill thanks to the audio quality. I still get a kick out of Mario's voice clips, though, and I can say that for all of the Advance games.

Just what I needed!

Absolutely love this for all our members here who never experienced this glorious voice work.

Fun fact: Nintendo told their investors, just last week, that people are playing slightly more old Mario games through the NSO sub since the movie release.

Clearly they're just trying to meet the insatiable demand for all things Mario!

I played the GBA versions of these games as a kid but COME ON NINTENDO THEY'RE ALREADY THERE AND THEY'RE WORSE PORTS THAN THE SNES ORIGINALS

They just wanna get all of these outta the way until the announce a new 2D Mario in june baaaaaby (One could hope, right? right?)

Na but for real, if there was any month to release these it was probably this one. It's definitely a boring drop for all the reasons already mentioned.
I will try Yoshis Island though, I have a friend who really likes this version and insists it's better than the SNES one so I will at least try it.. at some point :p

It's time

This is the dream. Each month I hope for this.

That said, even if we already have the better versions of the Mario games on SNES, there is some charm with the GBA compressed sounds. I will play them.

Quite the sudden announcement to make

@LukasManak22 Well, there's your 2D Mario for 2023 ;)

Jokes aside...Well, uhm...Yay? I'm not exactly sure how to feel about this, as others have pointed out all of these games are already available on the cheaper basic NSO tier, so there's not a lot of added value in these versions. I suppose it's still cool that we got them.

There's also, famously, a Kirby Tilt 'n Tumble romhack to be used with the gyro-removal patch, which just renames the game Kirby 'n, since you don't Tilt and you surely don't Tumble anymore.

In the same vein there are romhacks that remove the mouse requirement for Mario Paint and Mario + Wario on SNES, and make Yoshi's Safari playable with a controller instead of the mouse or super scope. Great for preservation to let people get a taste of these games.

What I can say about these is that I'm glad they're out of the way and that they didn't drip feed them to us as single releases.

Also I hope they put there a SP version of Advance 3 so I can just play the new levels, I don't want to play through the entire game with worse visuals and music just for those.

They're cool to have on the service, and they should put every port like this; but the dripfeed makes them feel 3 times worse because they're still games that are available on S/NES NSO and the quality of life changes of the GBA versions are not enough for me to treat them as very worth it...
If they had a consistent and tighter schedule, this would have felt okay, but they don't have one.

Cool that they are added, but yeah, as others have said, nso already offers better ways to experience these games? Why not release pokemon or something? This is definitely one of the most “nintendo” moves of all time

They want everyone to play Zelda, so they use this month to release games that should be on the service but no one will get excited about.

There's absolutely value in playing different versions of the same game, even if they were 1:1 identical content wise. The GBA ports (and gbc for Super Mario Bros Deluxe) having new content and modes absolutely makes them a worthwhile play through for fans despite the screen crunch.

I mean genuinely the design philosophies of some of the new Advanced content, such as the SMB3 levels, should serve as an inspiration imo, things like much wider power up variety and more weird gimmicky things like "what if this level had turnips and they worked like SMB2"

Maybe I'm just saying that cause of the amount of time I spent playing SMBX campaigns

These are neat from a "completion" perspective, it's cool that they are not afraid of having games that are essentially dupes.

On the other hand, this is a pretty uninteresting update in terms of wanting to play it.

I've actually never finished Super Mario Bros. 2. It's the only "mainline" Mario game I haven't finished, and one of the only Mario games overall. I should fix that soon...

Kind of wonder what they’ll have in a possible complementary Gameboy update next week? Super Mario bros deluxe, Donkey Kong ‘94 and Mario picross? XD

Not particularly exciting and won't move me to purchase the Expansion but oh Super Mario Advance takes me back to summer 2001.
I’m in the same boat. The expansion pack is quite possibly the least exciting service any gaming company has offered. Nothing they’ve done with it has moved the needle and made me want to add it to my online sub.

We should all be happy they're dumping these as a batch while we're busy with Zelda.

They could've done them one at a time over three lean months.

It's good that we're getting these, and doing it as a set is probably preferable, but it still feels pretty bad with how slow (and disappointing, in the case of Pokémon Stadium) NSO releases have been lately.

Cool I guess but these drops really need to start improving. Easily the most disappointing part of the Switch ecosystem.

Same. Having a SNES-quality game in handheld format was absolutely mindblowing to me in 2001.

If only I knew what sort of games I'd be playing over 20 years later portably, lol.

You ever want to take a time machine 20 years into the past and show your past self the Switch? Because now you can do things like "Here's SNES games running on a portable. And also, here's the same machine emulating another portable device running the same game". 🤯

For me it wasn't. I owned a Sega NOMAD and it played literal Genesis games 6 years before GBA was out. GBA did what Nomad did in a much smaller package. But it still was already dated hardware when it was out and Nintendo moved on and launched a N64 level handheld just 3 years after GBA.

I was waiting for Nintendo to show off its portable SNES in 96 - 97 but they decided to ride on the Game Boy success a little longer.

Yea, but didn't the NOMAD have battery life that would make the Steam Deck die of laughter?

The Nomad was only really "portable" when it was plugged into something like a car outlet. I had one growing up as well and it took so many batteries to not last one 3 hour air plane flight.

Mario advance 1/2 still hold up well, can confirm.

But whooo going to SMA3 after a bit of SNES Yoshi Island and noticing there’s nothing off about red coin coins is very jarring to me, makes them harder to find. Still, i like the jump noise on GBA more than SNES’s stupid spring…

What did Advance 3 change regarding red coins?

Sorry in advance if the answer is super familiar, but I wonder why the first Super Mario Bros wasn't re-released on GBA when it was part of the Snes All Stars collection?
