NSO Super Mario Advance 1-3 (SMB2 USA, SMW, Yoshi's Island) announced for NSO Expansion Pack May 26th

Three games in one drop? Alrighty then.
three games that already exist in some form on the service already (twice in the case of SMB2) so it's not all that exciting

nice to have them for completion's sake, but they're still largely the same games as before in all cases

already on the CHEAPER VERSION OF THE SERVICE lmao these are drops for the expansion pak!!

The new levels in Mario Advance 3 are great so those are worth playing if you haven't already (gotta beat the game to unlock them tho). But I agree outside of some novelties there isn't a ton to check out on the other two versions. At least they're out of the way now.

I hope we're still getting Game Boy games this month.

Out of every game shown to be coming to the GB/GBA services back in February, we’ve only gotten one of them. Out of, what, 6 total added?

What a weird announcement that was.

I loved SMA3 as a kid, thanks to it I never realized Yoshi's Island was a SNES game

Alrighty then. Bit of a waste. At least I don't have to add anything to my list of games to play after I'm done with Zelda lol

Honestly surprised they didn't throw LttP + 4 Swords in as well because Zelda month but this pretty much makes that all but inevitable. I'll take it.

Quite the sudden announcement to make
Needs more Toad screams for the full effect

So the new GBA games on NSO are ports of games that are already on NSO...yay?
One of them has already been re-release twice on the service.

On a more serious note... there is some extra content in these. SMA takes SMB2 adds a proper scoring system and some other mechanical tweaks and some content tweaks that aren't in the other iterations. SMA2 gives Luigi his signature physics and I think the Dragon Coins are proper collectibles now? SMA3 adds 6 more stages.

The only downside of these is 1) the reduced resolution and 2) voice samples

Was hoping for Mario party 3! Wonder if we’ll get some Gameboy games soon too. Also I like these ports, the QOL tracking additions are great, not to mention Mario bros mode. These are the versions I grew up with(and DKC GBC xd)

They timed a Gameboy drop with the last one so I expect it again here

Huh. Neat!

I'll echo most people here and say that these are not the definitive way to play these games. They're neat historical curiosities, and dropping them all at the same time as opposed to saving any one of them as an individual drop is the better play, but you can also play them on the NES/SNES apps. They do each have bonus features and tweaks, though they aren't as extensive as with SMB3:
  • Super Mario Advance screams "GBA launch title". It tries to show off the hardware with big enemies, rotation and scaling effects, added voice clips, and the Mario Bros. Multiplayer that would become a staple of the SMA series. It's an overall more forgiving game, with more plentiful health and opportunities for extra lives. But hardcore fans may appreciate the challenge of finding all of the Ace Coins and Yoshi Eggs (the latter being a postgame challenge). There's even a brand new boss!
  • Super Mario Advance 2 is the least changed version and arguably the least worth it to play. Luigi being an alternate character with his SMB2 USA physics and tweaked attributes is pretty neat, and the game now tracks Dragon Coin completion (with every level but the final one now having them to collect). If you found the health system of the original (all damage while powered up turns Mario into Small Mario) challenging and want a softer and more modern power up system, this one has you covered.
  • Super Mario Advance 3 features additional postgame levels and has an slower Countdown Timer for when you lose Baby Mario. It's otherwise pretty faithful to the original, but that added content may be a good sway.

Obvious they picked these because of TotK. Maybe we'll get some GB games too but doubtful. Other systems minus NES/SNES were released last month and probably not getting released this month (neither will the NES/SNES be released this month)

the version on the Wii U VC (that also got added to NSO) just has them unlocked from the start, which makes it totally fine for the service

the other 3 take a lot more work to get to their new content, what little there is

Think Nintendo is alternating between N64 and GBA each month so N64 should be next month.

Nooooooooo

This was suppose to be Fire Emblem’s month!

Based off nothing but my optimistic prediction on those games they showed on the direct after fusion was the first title reveal.

Nobody even likes Mario. The movie probably bombed noooooooooo

Tho I wouldn’t have mind Golden Sun 🤔

Pretty smart drop all around tbh. A lot of people were expecting nothing this month due to TotK, and the remaining Mario Advance games were gonna remain an ugly "when are they gonna 'waste a slot' in a gba update to add those?", so you kill two birds with one stone. Drop all the gba Mario games when the vast majority of active nso+ep accounts are focused on Zelda.

I grew up playing the GBA ports, and all three are childhood favorites of mine (especially World and Yoshi's Island), but I'm gonna continue to pass on the $50 subscription tier if it's just gonna be old ROMs.

Fuck yeah these all rule. I still stand by the GBA ver of SMA2 being the best mario world version by far due to how comfy running spin jumps are and everything being much brighter

SMA's hidden yoshi eggs and such are fun bonuses too. SMA3 is the only one that feels eeeeh with the SNES version being basically the same but i cannot play the SNES version due to it lacking the yoshi voice lol, so I'll enjoy all of these

still, least it confirms this will add stuff not in the future lineup. Bring on Zero Mission and PMD Red!

The gba ports of these games were I played and beat them as a kid (for 2, 3, and world, didn't have yoshis island).

On one hand, I'm glad that them releasing 3 games this month means that on average they still are adding at least one GBA per month.

But the games that I'd be more excited to see on gameboy advance NSO are the ones that are a pain in the ass to try and emulate on PC: Warioware Twisted and Yoshi Topsy Turvy. Really hope to see those on NSO eventually.

This is the dumbest addition to NSO but will defend these versions to the death because these games were my childhood

Advance 3 is Yoshi's Island, that's the game I was referring to. Advance 4 is SMB3.

My collection of mario advance.

I remember playing the first one (SMB2) a lot, the other 2 not so much. Still a good way to get all of them out. So does this means we could get Super Mario Bros Deluxe?

I remember borrowing my friend’s copy of SMA4 and it was the loudest damn Game Boy Advance game I’ve ever heard. Like Xevious on 3DS loud.

I know I said these were duds, but I meant that from a value proposition with the NES/SNES games for the entry tier and these seemingly getting a “prime” release focus rather than just having been added at the start. I think the GBA SMB2 is probably my favorite voice samples be damned.

Oh god I didn't even think about Twisted, we need that so much that game is stupidly expensive and doesn't even exist in Europe (I'm not European but just like access wise). It wasn't on Wii U VC but there's been a lot more use of gyro on switch vs wii u + joycon spinning feels more natural fit vs GBA so I'm hoping

mGBA supports gyro controls, both as stand-alone and part of the Retroarch core. I haven't tried it myself, but if you connect a Joycon, you should be able to play them (and Kirby Tilt 'n Tumble too).

"Mom, can we have 2D Mario on Nintendo Switch?"
"There's already 2D Mario on Switch!"
2D Mario on Switch:
Ports of games that you can already play on the cheaper version of NSO

I'm pretty confident that Twisted will come at some point, given other motion games being shown, but it will play a little weird as some games visually assumed you were actually holding the screen upside down or sideways. I guess handheld will work, but it will be goofy on the TV!

There's also romhacks out there that map the gyro controls for those games which is nice for emulation on devices like the miyoo mini.

i've kinda speculated that tilt and tumble and twisted will work docked by actually rotating and skewing the visual on-screen so that you're not left guessing, maybe even with a GBC/GBA border

seems easy enough to make work, but i don't really know the capabilities of the NSO emulator to do anything other than wildly speculate

That would be neat! I have no idea how realistic something like that is. I just keep thinking about how rotation worked in the actual GBA days, so my brain imagines it looking really ugly, even though it could probably be handled by modern pixel sizes.
