I picked

-Zelda
-RE4
-Final Fantasy 16
-Starfield (unless something went terribly wrong. Critics do love some post Skyrim Bethesda, despite me wanting it to be more focused on role playing)
-Marvel's Spider-Man 2
-Star Wars

But the real 6th pick instead of Star Wars will be monkEPD

RE4
Zelda TotK
FFXVI
Starfield
Spider-Man 2
Silksong (or another breakout indie game)

The first 3 I think are basically locks. RE4 has a 93 on metacritic last I checked, Zelda is the easiest 95+ of the year, and FF has a good chance to break into the low 90's as well.

We need to see more of Starfield and Spider-Man to judge how they'll score but the pedigree is there.

Nintendo, Microsoft/Bethesda, and Sony can all breathe a sigh of relief that Hades II is only launching in Early Access this year.

I made this list earlier, but I will expand on it.

Locks:
Resident Evil 4- Launched to great fanfare.
Zelda: TotK- Coming out next month to a lot of hype. Legendary franchise.
Final Fantasy XVI- See above.

Good chances:
Spider-Man 2- I need to see at least one gameplay trailer before considering this to be a lock.
Starfield- If it has a solid launch, then it should be safely in the lock category.

Wild Card:
Diabo IV- Beta was hype. There is a good chance this makes it into the lock category.
Star Wars: Jedi Survivor- Well known franchise with a lot of excitement behind it.
[Redacted]- ATM it is one of the biggest games of the year. It is going to get some nominations, possibly GOTY.
Street Fighter 6- There is a lot of excitement building behind this game. I think the launch will surprise some people.
Octopath Traveler 2- A large improvement over the first game, it will probably come up short but it should be recognized here at least.
Dead Space- Great launch and revival for the franchise, most years it probably would get a GOTY nomination.
Hollow Knight: Silksong- When are you going to launch already?
Alan Wake 2- I think this will be like Dead Space. Great game, but it will fall behind bigger names.

This year is stacked. There will be at least one or two great games that will get left out.

Surprised by a few of the vote numbers. I voted for Starfield, but 76%? I genuinely hope it turns out to be good but there's a nonzero chance it ends up sucking. And Jedi Survivor? Not that it got a super high vote share, but it has close to no shot IMO with this year's lineup

My votes were:
Zelda
Spider-man 2
RE4
Starfield
Silksong
FFXVI

Guessing
  • TotK
  • Final Fantasy XVI
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Starfield
  • Diablo 4 maybe? Honestly not sure. Spiderman 2 I can also see I guess. It's a "we need to nominate something for a full six even though it's definitely not winning" slot.
  • Obligatory indie game that I feel is too soon to speculate. Just whatever has the most name recognition so GotY can save face.
to be honest though, unless TotK ends up being too disappointing or derivative or Starfield ends up being that damn impressive, I feel every nomination beside it s a formality. TGA is an advert reel first and foremost.

Pre-emptively giving GOTY to a game that has not released and has very little gameplay footage feels like a bold move to me
Bookmark my post and come back to it in December. Zelda is the only competition and it will get dinged for it's world reuse and because the dungeons are not structured exactly as they were in Twilight Princess.

It isn't tho. I think most of us were expecting Elden Ring to take the crown last year way before the game came out, with TotK being the other contender(which we had seen even less) before it was delayed. This year it's probably Starfield unless they mess up like Cyberpunk, with Tears of the Kingdom being the other possible winner(I think it won't take it tho, like GoW Ragnarok last year).

Bethesda don't have From Soft's reputation, or at least not anymore. Don't get me wrong I'm expecting it to be a well-received game, but it surprises me to see people expecting an Elden Ring-level critical juggernaut

To play devil’s advocate for Starfield, I will say I think the actually GOTY winner is more likely to go to new series as opposed to sequels.

Sure, God of War 2018 and BotW are obviously sequels in their own ways and they won. But they also were largely different directions for each franchise to the point where they were almost soft reboots.

So I do think Starfield will have that edge against most of the potential nominees, assuming they don’t shit the bed.

Zelda, Spider-Man and RE4make are the only locks at the moment

I could easily see Starfield and FFXVI shitting the bed and not getting nommed, while I'm iffy on if journalists will go crazy over a From Soft game that has nothing to do with Soulsborne

plus there's stuff that could possibly happen like Persona 3 Remake and a new 3D Mario

I don’t think anyone was expecting Elden Ring to be as massive of a smash hit as it was, but even then we already had press previews and impressions, so it wasn’t exactly a huge stretch to say it’d win in what looked to be a fairly weak year. None of that is the case with Starfield.

Declaring that as GOTY this early is a huge stretch.

Starfield - It's a BGS game, of course it's going to get a nomination for GOTY. Will it win? While Oblivion and Skyrim won their GOTYs, Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 didn't, so it's really unknown territory how a brand new IP will do.

Spider-Man 2 - It's pretty much THE Playstation game this year, and from their best studio too. No way it doesn’t get the nom.

Tears of the Kingdom - come on, of course it’s going to be nominated.

Final Fantasy 16 - The action focus of this one is going to open a lot of eyes, and will almost certainly get a nom barring any unforeseen circumstances like the game being mid.

Hi-Fi Rush - I think this will be the dark horse nomination, kinda like Spider-Man in 2018 and Rachet and Clank in 2021. A fantastic game that you know won’t win, but you believe that there’s a chance that it could overcome the odds.

Hogwarts Legacy - I think there will be too many people clamoring for this game that I can’t see it missing out, no matter how controversial it will be.

I think Zelda wins by a landslide, but Starfield has a solid chance. Don’t think any of the others have a shot honestly.

I think TOTK is easily the frontrunner, but Pikmin 4 would be a fun dark horse and I hope that y'all are sleeping on Street Fighter 6

The difference there is that Elden Ring came out and not only met, but actually exceeded its already absurdly high expectations. It very easily could have merely been “good” and the award would have gone to Ragnarok instead.

Now obviously the same thing could happen to Starfield, but the advance buzz (while positive) isn’t in the same league as Elden Ring’s was (at least not yet). There’s a lot of “Yeah it could be good but how’s the gameplay/will there be a ton of Bethesda jank/is this just going to be Skyrim crossed with early No Man’s Sky/etc. talk right now.

Starfield is a pretty big unknown still at this point, so I’m not going to give it the benefit of the doubt until we see and hear more.

I think it's already locked, or close to it. Resident Evil 4, Hogwarts Legacy, Tears of the Kingdom, Spider-Man 2, Starfield, and either Final Fantasy 16 or Diablo 4. The year is stacked, so no indie games will get in unless multiple games from this list disappoint.

Aside from the weirdness that a thread like this can exist and people can make likely accurate guess even for games that haven't come out yet... It's pretty depressing that there's like two new IPs in the whole list.

The endless now.

Not that it seemed like a popular choice here, but it appears Redfall making it won't be too likely. Bit of a bummer considering Arkane's portfolio.

My picks in order of likelihood:

  1. Tears of the Kingdom
  2. Diablo 4 (if not fucked up badly somehow)
  3. Final Fantasy 16
  4. Resident Evil 4
  5. Spider-Man 2
  6. Assassin's Creed Mirage (this is my wildcard pick)

The shoo-ins are Tears of the Kingdom and Spider-Man I reckon. I don't think anything is topping Tears of the Kingdom-- it's an open-world adventure with innovative mechanics, which makes it prime TGA bait.

SF6 I want to get nominated, because it's doing a lot of things to expand fighting games outside of their current core audience.

A new candidate has appeared!

The Plucky Squire

Personally, I think game awards only encourage negativity and toxicity among players. They should disappear.

If nothing else big is announced, I think Alan Wake II will snag a spot. It looks fantastic, and we’ve already seen a Remedy game get nominated before.

Looking at these poll results I’ve really overestimated SF6.
I think SF6 definitely has the buzz to make it as of now, but it has a big hill to climb with being a fighting game and a possibly stacked ballot.

Nah, it’s a legit contender. The problem is just that there’s seemingly five surefire nominees, making that final pick incredibly difficult to pinpoint.

As far as actual GOTY I think Zelda is going to dominate close to everywhere this year and RE4 would be the obvious second choice.

I'm going to enjoy Starfield but I don't think it will win too many GOTY's but maybe that game or Spiderman will be third.

I don’t predict FF to make a dent in Zelda, and probably deservedly so - as I don’t see it sparking exciting conversations about game design in general like TOTK has…

But I REALLY hope it turns out well and gets a great share of praise. The series desperately needs it. Even FFVIIR level of acclaim isn’t where the franchise used to be, and even if it was, it’s still tied to FF7 and all that entails. A brand new 90+ Meta-tier FF set in a new world would be so heartwarming to see. Something that just utterly catapults the brand back on top without relying on nostalgia

Spider Man 2 is whatever imo. I’m sure it’ll be a great game for what it sets out to do, and what it sets out to do is probably enough to land it a GOTY nom but i don’t think it’ll be a huge competitor despite being a shoe in due to being a well done, polished big first party action adventure

RE4 - I haven’t played but I have played the original RE4 and REmake 2. I still don’t know how I feel about putting them in the running in general tbh, as great as they are.

Frankly that's why I think Tears of the Kingdom should win GotY. It's a marvel of game design, chock full of stuff you'd normally see in more experimental indie games. I would also put Street Fighter 6 as another top contender because of how it's bringing a lot of cool and new stuff to the fighting game genre. Starfield is the wild card-- if it's pretty much Skyrim in space then it's probably gonna be fun but not exactly groundbreaking.

I'm similar to this. IMO pretty much nothing has a chance to beat TOTK based on its current response among... basically everyone, especially games media and critics. It would have to be either FF16 or Starfield, IMO, since it's going to take something that's not only extremely amazing, but also something that's very new and fresh, and really only those two fit among games I can think of. Starfield especially really depends, if it's more along the lines of Fallout 4 meets Mass Effect, it'll be good, but probably not GOTY level. If it really does something new and interesting and brings that kind of game to new heights, then maaaaaaybe it could top Zelda, I could see it getting a lot of nods for being a new IP and such potentially.

Obviously still time to go but as a way-too-early prediction I'd say Zelda and Spider-Man 2 are locks.

Then (if they're at least decently well-received) the very likelys would be Resi 4, FFXVI and Starfield, followed by either an indie darling or an AA surprise. A bit worried that the wizard game might get attention here but hopefully not.

Just out of interest, what indie games have caught the mainstream appeal this year? I’ve had my head down on Fire Emblem, Octopath II, Advance Wars then Zelda, so I haven’t really followed much since Chained Echoes. Sea of Stars has a demo out but I’m not seeing much discussion of it. I wonder if Steamworld Build might do well later this year.

I haven't really seen many indie get major mainstream attention this year unfortunately - the below have already released and got some good reception and a little buzz but nothing in the league of Stray, Stardew Valley or Hollow Knight

A Space for the Unbound
Pizza Tower
Dredge
Humanity
Planet of Lana
Cassette Beats

I think there are a few on the horizon that could take that mantle, potentially The Plucky Squire, Minneko's Night Market, Dordogne or Oxenfree II but it could also be a big surprise title no-one was expecting.

TOTK, Resident Evil 4 remake and Spider-man 2 are locks. Starfield will be too unless it suffers a Bethesda-special, Fallout 76-style launch disaster.

Just leaves two more. I can see Street Fighter 6 making it for its ambition and to improve variety among the nominees (which is sorely needed for these awards). The-game-that-shall-not-be-named is a contender unfortunately, though hopefully the judges will be reluctant to nominate two titles based on non-gaming IPs. They also usually bring in a token indie but so far there hasn't been a breakout hit this year (Pucky Squire maybe? People reacted well to that).

Honestly, I'd keep an eye on Alan Wake II. OK I know it won't be supplanting Resi 4, but if it nails the narrative it would do enough to stand apart and justify two survival horror games on the final list.

But I REALLY hope it turns out well and gets a great share of praise. The series desperately needs it.

I think the problem FF will face is - despite the technical prowess behind it - it is possibly the most dreary themed of any Final Fantasy since the advent of the PSone days. Rote western fantasy with a sprinkle of Final Fantasy... it just seems completely unexciting in terms of setting and characterisation.

This. I could be wrong but given the previous two games, it feels like it'll be the equivalent of an average Marvel blockbuster, fun, good looking, but forgettable. It'll get 9's and people will love it, but not enough to really stand out.

I want to say Silksong is going to be in there, but at the same time I am afraid voting for it will jinx its release and move it to 2024.

Spider-man 2 will be one of this year's best selling games and it already has a huge amount of hype behind it. Unless it launches in a terrible state (which is unlikely) then it'll one of the 6 noms. Geoff always follows the money.

Yeah encouraging scores for Street Fighter 6. It would be nice if it got a nomination over yet another cinematic action game
