We're only a little over a quarter of the way through but 2023 is quite notably a packed year for gaming. The competition this year will surely be fiercer than 2022 which was essentially Elden Ring vs God of War.

That said, even though it's still early, what do you think will end up getting nominated at this year's TGAs for GOTY?

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
  • Final Fantasy XVI
  • Diablo IV
  • Starfield
  • Hollow Knight Silksong
  • Resident Evil 4
If Starfield or Diablo end up disappointing, I can see Spider-Man 2 getting in instead.

Tears of the Kingdom
Starfield
Spider-Man 2
The Outer Worlds 2
Hi-Fi Rush
and an indie game that's not even announced yet

I feel they'll avoid having re-releases or remakes this year.

Then a toss-up between Silksong and Metroid Prime

Hi-Fi Rush! I knew I forgot something. Thankfully I added the "Other" option lol.

on second thought, and based on what kind of indie games get nominated for goty and win best indie at the keighelys for the past two years, i can see silksong not being the indie game in the goty nominations.

Idk. For me the GotY contenders rn are looking like Armored Core 6, Crash Team Rumble, Lego 2K Drive, and Cavern of Dreams, lol

If a new DK game is released this year that could be an immediate winner for me also

I would lock in RE4, TotK, and FF XVI. From there, it gets a little harder to feel out. Starfield still feels like an unknown quantity, but if it's any good it will certainly get a nod. Spider-Man is probable for the prestige representation. The last game will be an indie darling of some sort. Maybe Hollow Knight? But probably something nobody is talking about yet.

I think the sure things would be RE4, TotK, FF16, and Spider-man 2.

Starfield I think would have to mess up big time for it not to get in, which is possible, but I think they will pull through.

And then there's usually a 6th nom that's kind of a wild card, which I think may go to Hollow Knight. I could also easily see it going to Hi-Fi Rush or even Armored Core if it ends up being better than past entries.

There's a very clear cut top 5 here, barring a disaster it's hard to imagine one of them falling out. That just leaves the sixth spot, which is really tough to figure out. From a pure critic score standpoint, Silksong would be it, but given their popularity I could easily see Jedi Survivor or Street Fighter 6 making the cut. Armored Core too as a dark horse, although I think people aren't gonna be all that big on the gameplay loop. A surprise release by a major company could also do it, maybe something from Nintendo or Capcom's Pragmata if that turns out well.

At the very least, I feel very confident that it won't be Hi-Fi Rush. That just isn't the type of game that pulls in nominations.

People are putting a lot of faith in this Final Fantasy, I think it's just not going to be the flop of the year because Forspoken exists.

Resident Evil 4 (got to have a good remake)
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (duh)
Final Fantasy 16 (idk i feel like it will for sure though)
Starfield (microsoft absolutely needs a pick and it will be this despite my personal feelings)
Marvel's Spider-man 2 (sony's pick this year)
Dredge (indie darling pick)

The first is obviously going to be Pikmin 4 the GOAT.

Then Tears, Spider Man, Resi 4... And I was gonna pick Diablo 4 but I'll give Starfield the benefit of the doubt. The sixt pick will be an outlier, I don't know which but I don't think none of the rest of the games listed will make it.

On the other hand, I think people are seriously overestimating Final Fantasy XVI's potential. Much as it's backed by FFXIV producers, I think it'll divide opinions as it is usual now with this series.

The answers are so obvious it hurts, Game Awards is predictable af
The Sony pick, the Microsoft pick, the Nintendo pick, the indie pick, the random AAA / totally undeserved , the indie darling pick, the wildcard

It’s also heavily biased to cinematic type games, soemtimes these sections overlap.

For example xenoblade 3 was 100% a Nintendo pick because they have to get soemthing but their other offerings aren’t really cinematic or tell or do something complex, it was the only one that hit the criteria so it got nominated for fulfilling a checklist splatoon and Kirby didn’t.

Not necessarily. Odyssey, Smash, and Animal Crossing were also GOTY nominees.

Kirby I gotta imagine was super close last year. Wouldn’t be surprised if it were in 7th or 8th place as far as nom votes.

Or maybe it got nominated because it had the highest scoring critic score out of Nintendo’s offerings, and was one of the highest scoring in all of 2022?

Stylized JRPGs face a severe uphill battle to even be nominated. The Game Awards almost certainly didn’t go out of their way to nominate Xenoblade over anything else.

Diablo 4
starfield (iffy)
Spiderman 2

I don't think the third highest rated game of the year needed to be on a nintendo system to get nominated

Resident Evil 4 - IIRC FFVII Remake was nominated, so it definitely deserves a spot. Rather obvious too;
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - gonna be huge and set the world on fire, good shot at winning unless Starfield really really delivers;
Marvel's Spider Man 2 - couldn't care less, but it's the definition of an obvious nomination;
Starfield - duh, unless it completely sucks or something, it's gonna be the favorite;
Hollow Knight Silksong - indie spot;
Final Fantasy XVI - another rather obvious nomination unless it sucks more than people expect it to.

Street Fighter 6 - we all know fighting games are not nominated in general(Smash Ultimate was an exception);
Pikmin 4 - will probably be snobbed, maybe best family game and that's it;
Fire Emblem Engage - has a good shot of not receiving a single nomination and fans make it win Player's Choice like Three Houses.

If Metroid Prime 4 somehow slips into this year or the 2D Mario comes and sets the world on fire, Nintendo has a shot at having another nomination.

In the end either Tears of the Kingdom or Starfield gets the crown.

Edit: really hope Hi-Fi Rush gets a nomination btw.

Is Diablo 4 really blowing people away that it's GOTY material?
A lot of the previews/beta reactions were very surprised at how good it was, so I could see it. It got a ton of praise and really got people's attention.

But I personally don't think it'll make it over the other games this year unless it's either extra good or some other things disappoint a little.

Pikmin usually gets very good reviews but I'd be stoked if 4 ended up getting high enough that it had a chance at that 6th "wild card" spot.
Nah, man. I've been waiting 10 years for it. It's going to be the best thing ever tbh

Speaking seriously, even though I'm a huge Pikmin fanboy, I'm ambivalent about 4, but at the very least I'm super glad it's finally happening.

Honestly I hope Armored Core is at least nominated. People love FromSoft and their track record for the last decade has been solid but I don’t think even them can make most people, even in the gaming media care much about a mecha game.

Though if the reception is good I hope other devs get influenced and we start seeing more mecha games appearing.

Zelda and Armored Core will be the big ones. Token nominations for Resident Evil, Starfield, and Spider-Man 2. Last spot I give to Diablo unless we get Prime 4 this year.

Would TOTK be nominated since it looks so similar to the original?
Not sure why it wouldn't just because of that. 3D Zelda is basically always a shoe in, even if some fans don't like it as much. Even something as "controversial" as Skyward Sword got a 93 on Metacritic.

I voted for the top six without checking the results first, so I guess I'm on the same page as most. I'm just hoping Spider-Man 2 lives up to the hype. First one was one of my favorite games of the previous gen. Super excited for the sequel.

(I also haven't played RE4 remake yet, despite the original being my #1 all-time fave. Just haven't had the time, unfortunately. If it and SM2 can be top tier games, I'll count 2023 as a solid year.)

I'd be surprised if Diablo 4 does better than Baldur's Gate 3 critically but I guess it's a better fit for the Game Awards. Top 4 games are about as obvious as it gets but I hope SF6 is liked enough by more casual audiences to get some representation outside of best fighting game.

Zelda
Starfield
Final fantasy 16
Spiderman 2
Resident evil 4
An artsy indie game that will become popular in the future (not silksong because it won't release this year)
