With the new sonic origins collection announcement, you won’t need to get a chunk of game gear games last minute. This knocks about half of the games available off the list of potentially disappearing forever. Some of these also weren’t even in 3DS VC.

This is great as someone who was a little concerned about the Game Gear games going out too and gritting my teeth about their lack of availability.

Still probably need to pick up GG Shinobi though...

Picked up two of the Ace Attorney games. Probably gonna grab DQ VII since I never played it. I have VIII on the PS2 but never got very far. Not sure if I should get the 3DS version.

@EricTheGamerman I think everything ok your list is an excellent choice. I don't think you'd regret any of those purchases.

@Barely Able hilarious about the Game Gear games since I think I just picked up what are supposed to be 4 of the best games on the eShop, Tails Adventure, Sonic 1 and 2, and Triple Trouble. I'm guessing the other 6 aren't with the $10 Origins DLC upgrade?

I went and got Fire Emblem Echos, Bye Bye Boxboy, Pokémon Crystal (not diamond as someone pointed out earlier) and had spare credit so grabbed 3D Urban Champion for the historic curiosity.

I ordered a physical Paper Mario Colour Splash.

Speaking of historic curiosities, don’t sleep on the Game & Watch DSiware games, it’s not all of them, but outside of a massive collection I don’t see Nintendo doing these in this kind of detail for a while

Probably not worth it. Frankly, I don’t like most of the game gear sonic games since the screen real estate is so minimal. But with all the origins upgrades that will work for me.

In honor of the shops closing. Here are some YouTube playlists/videos with some of the old shop themes:

I get that the theme doesn't matter much, but... Man, those were some really nice themes!

So if I unlink my account and try to link my current one to this will that work?

Otherwise. Guess I’m missing out on some DLC.

Is Stella Glow really that good?
That’s what people say but I tried the demo and thought it was awful. But I had trouble looking past the character designs.

…still got it on during one of the crazier sales but decided against getting a cart.

Well, with mere days until the end of the eShop and my final purchases nearly done, I think it's fine for me to plug my own set of recommendations here:

The Wii U eShop is the hardest to recommend due to a lot of stuff being ported elsewhere + dev licenses expiring due to NOA not allowing some to renew them: most of my site's history is with Wii U indie gams and most of em you can't buy anymore! but VC stuff should still be there and even with the new NSO systems I don't think some of these will show up. Especially Recca (old IP holder who put it on 3DS is long gone)

Hazumi is another 3DS game I really loved reviewing that's an exclusive. Please nab it if you haven't!

Thanks. What kinda changes will he GG games have in Origins?

Thanks for posting these, Seafoam! I told myself I was done reading recommendation articles and have completed 99% of my purchases but I really enjoy your site so I'm gonna dive into these.

I thought I already had all the games I want on these systems, but I’ve been playing Tropical Freeze and now I’m suddenly thinking that I should buy Donkey Kong Jungle Beat before it’s gone…

Yeah, this really sucks as I realize even with my narrowed down list that I'd be spending more than I should...

Like at some point, the alternative option of Homebrew on my old original 3DS is just more appealing... I'd be paying a pretty hefty price to get what I want at this point. And I think I'll stick to my pretty hard $50 limit I set for myself and I've already used part of that on the first Pushmo since I really wanted to have that one.

A part of me just wants to stock up on the smaller stuff and call it a day, or I guess I could JUST get Rhythm Heaven Megamix and also be done...

Seems like the AUS eShop has a few different sales compared to NA? Weird. Anyways, picked up Stella Glow and Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker.

Who else was a theme/sticker fiend back in the day? Here's a lil snapshot of my cramped 3DS menu in poor quality

I’m throwing more money at this than I should but I largely missed out on DSiWare back in the day, since I never had a DSi and wasn’t following sites like NintendoLife until maybe 5-6 years ago so I had no clue about which eShop exclusives were actually good.

But yea, there’s a lot of quality stuff and I know from the Wii closure that I went overboard and then never touched most of what I got. So I’m trying to limit the damage to games I was interested in but never picked up, strong recommendations, and DLC this time. And it’s still more $ than I logically know I should be spending.

FOMO sucks, and some of this for sure is trying to get the morality ledger far enough into the black for down the road. Assuming I actually have the time in the future to invest in setting up CFW and all that jazz.

It really does suck though that many of these titles just won’t come back until there’s another device with multiple screens. Maybe Analog or some enterprising outfit out of China will whip a solution up eventually.

End of an era in so many ways.

Psst, @shoptroll, if you're looking for more DSiWare recs, these RetroXP articles were massively useful:

https://retroxp.substack.com/p/get-these-nintendo-3ds-games-before-eb8

(This is part 3, parts 1 and 2 are linked at the bottom)

Reading about G.G Hidden Ninja Kagemaru sent me down a path of reading about which other G.G DSi games are worthwhile, which led me to also grabbing G.G All Breaker and G.G Great Whip Adventure. I'm excited to try them out. I might pick up G.G Assault Buster too.

In fact, here are the DSiWare games I grabbed and a few at the end that I'm still considering:

Art Style: PiCTOBiTS
Art Style: Boxlife
A Kappa's Trail
GG Series All Breaker
GG Series Great Whip Adventure
GG Series Kagemaru
Dark Void Zero
Mario vs. DK: Minis March Again
Birds and Beans

Art Style: Aquite
Candle Route
G.G Series Assault Buster
Ivy The Kiwi? Mini
Snapdots

Good choices. I have the DSiWare games I want because I bought most of them when Nintendo accidentally removed those games from the eshop for a time a few years back. Didn’t want to risk it. Might get Kappa’s Tail though.

For anyone that wants to know, Birds and Beans (Pyoro) is an unlockable in the first WarioWare and also in gold

Maybe you already had it, but I would strongly recommend Starship Defense on DSiWare. It’s one of the few titles I feel I keep promoting for 3DS.

This one is also very good. Called Starship Patrol in PAL regions. All of the Q games DSiWare games are great.

Yeah I’ve been mostly using the NintendoLife and Retronauts listicles as my guide for what to pull out of DSiWare which covers the vast majority of what has been recommended. Will link them after work for anyone else interested.

Thank you for the rec! I was thinking about it and read the review a few weeks ago, but I decided against it since I'm not really into tower defense. Appreciate it though!

And in the same spirit, here are the 3DS eShop and VC games I picked up recently:

Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure
Kirby's Blowout Blast
Kokuga
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
Siesta Fiesta
Steel Empire

Catrap
Donkey Kong Land I
Donkey Kong Land II
Donkey Kong Land III
Kirby's Pinball
Kirby's Blockball
Mega Man III
Mega Man IV
Mega Man V
Milon's Secret Castle
Pokémon Puzzle Challenge
Sonic Game Gear
Sonic Game Gear 2
Sonic Triple Trouble
Tails Adventure

I think I've seen recommendations for both stella glow and radiant historia. I don't think I'll get both, but if I was going to get one, which would be the better choice? The price difference isn't (too) important to me.

Radiant Historia is a classic.

I think you will need to format. You will probably need it to be externally powered as well. I have a dual usb cord so I can use two usb connections on the Wii U for this.
Yeah you’re right. Just plugged it in and it prompted me to format it, was hoping that it would just make a “Wii U” folder and not bother with the files. It’s kind of overkill to have external storage for my Wii U when there isn’t that much left to buy or redownload… I guess I’ll figure out where to put my files this weekend, probably on a Google Drive or something. At least the hard drive does work with the Wii U

Anyway here’s what I’m looking at for my final purchases as of now. Some may be unavailable on other platforms but I’d rather play those on Wii U or 3DS so I can get max value from these (plus I prefer the form factor there in some cases)

Wii U

Getting for sure:
  • Wario Land 4 (planned to buy it but never got around)
  • Advance Wars (same thing, will probably come to NSO way later)
  • New Play Control Pikmin
  • Wario Land Shake it
  • Pandora’s Tower

On the fence (have some questions):
  • Super Mario 64 DS (this is the one DS game on Wii U that looks like it makes sense to play it on Wii U with the second screen on the gamepad. I guess it hurts to not have analog movement but the Wii U’s dpad is good. When I noticed that 3D All-Stars didn’t include some kind of DS remaster with analog control I guess the dream is dead for that, so might as well get it on Wii U? 64 is one of my goats and this one has you play as Yoshi so it seems like a no brainer, hope it looks fine on a TV)
  • Xenoblade X (now this is basically a full price game. It’s probably worth it for the playtime, while I dislike Xenoblade’s combat this one looks more interesting due to the open world and banger OST. So would it be worth it to just buy it digitally and install the data packs since I have the space now (it’s super expensive physically) so I can have one of the big Wii U exclusives that uses the Gamepad, or will this get an unevitable remaster that features an extra epilogue? Apparently the game’s ending is abrupt so it seems like a good candidate for that)
  • Harvest Moon 64 (apparently the best one and unlikely to hit NSO due to the name change? Don’t care that much for farming sims (only played a bit of the Gamecube one) but if that one is a classic I’m open)
  • Bomberman 64 (unlikely to hit NSO because Konami but could it get a collection with the others? I have some very vague memories of this one from childhood but that’s it. I know Hero is the one with the cool OST but does this one slaps as well?)

Not sure:
  • DuckTales Remastered (is this good? Very cheap and made by Capcom, the original was before my time though)
  • Runbow (cheap, 3DS version is New 3DS exclusive for some reason. Wasn’t this very hyped by NOA on release? Doesn’t look too special idk)
  • Shantae Risky’s Revenge (played 1 and 3 on 3DS, didn’t play that one. Honestly even though people say 3 is the best one I thought it was mid, 1 is my favorite for what it did on GBC but even then it’s not amazing. Have no interest in 4)
  • F-Zero X (I’d love to own that but N64 games on Wii U are darker so idk, is it good on Switch? Will only sub to NSO once they add Conker really)
  • Bayonetta 1 & 2 (aren’t those the same price than on Switch with the discount lmao. Since they never go on sale on Switch might as well make use of the HDD space and get those on Wii U)
  • Affordable Space Adventures (doesn’t seem to be on sale in NA but this seems to be one of the biggest true Wii U exclusives out there. Is it still worth it undiscounted if you play it solo)
  • Pikmin 3 missions

3DS

Getting most definitely:
  • Wario Land 2 (only played 3 on 3DS)
  • Virtue’s Last Reward (this is undiscounted in NA but still less than the price of my 999 DS copy. The third game is delisted, I guess that if Spike Chunsoft ever ports the trilogy to Switch it would have the first two bundled and the third game separate. Does VLR at least uses DS features? I know there’s a save bug but I guess I should be fine if I save during dialogues and not puzzles?)
  • Super Mario 3D Land (I expect this to be my least favorite 3D Mario but might as well grab it for completion’s sake, at least it’s a Nintendo Selects)
  • Mario & Luigi Dream Team (Nintendo Selects, I loved BiS and apparently it’s similar except that it’s Luigi and it has more tutorials? Mario RPGs are always fun)
  • Electroplankton (Hanenbow for obvious reasons)
  • Puzzle Quest (remember it having some buzz back in the day, the physical DS version costs around the same. It has a complete edition on Switch that apparently has issues and doesn’t get patched anymore, I figure the original is good enough since I’ll probably get bored of it before wanting to play expansions)
  • X-Escape (Kamiya posted it on Instagram)
  • Crimson Shroud
  • Rayman 1 (DSi, not sure if it’s the best version, mostly interested in 2 but apprently 3DS version is tricky to 100%. I wish Ubisoft just ported the trilogy to modern platforms)

Games I thought about but I guess I’ll skip:

  • Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (I don’t mind not getting to play that one since it being split into missions basically destroys the main appeal of the first one for me
  • Wario Ware Gold (this looks like a great package that might possibly be better than the Switch one but even then, I played all those games. I love how it uses the system’s features but again, I already played these, Twisted is my fave GBA game)
  • GBC Zeldas (I don’t own LA, have both Oracles physically, would be nice to play them on a bigger screen but those will all be on NSO. Priority is for games I haven’t played really
  • Dragon Quest games (apparently there’s a DLC in VII that you need to beat the 150 hour game to access. Then, there’s VIII which is one of the games I look the most forward to but it simply doesn’t look as good on the 3DS. Now one of my first games on the system was Tales of the Abyss 3D which looks basically the same to me minus loading times. DQVIII is like, the grass simply looks greener elsewhere, plus there’s no orchestral music. I know Nintendo published those and everything but I’m hoping for a definitive HD version someday, I think it’s bound to happen since it’s one of their most regarded games)

Wow. So seems Badge Arcade isn’t doing the two free daily pulls today nor are they offering a theme or badges if you spend money. Never seen that and I’ve played it frequently for years.
That’s not good. Luckily I got everything I wanted out of it (mostly the cool icon badges for things like the eshop and Mii plaza). Would be hard to get everything in a set without paying a few bucks though.
It looks like the practice catcher bonuses are still active (for now), but yeah, good luck getting very far with those. I guess I'll be retiring the daily couple of minutes that I spend with it. I've had all of the Zelda badges for a long time now, so that's my top priority sorted at least.

Yeah I’ve been mostly using the NintendoLife and Retronauts listicles as my guide for what to pull out of DSiWare which covers the vast majority of what has been recommended. Will link them after work for anyone else interested.

As promised:

@Yoshifan31 here are my two rupees on some of your fence-sitters and a couple others:

  • Definitely get NPC Pikmin 2 if you don't have it
  • Harvest Moon 64 is the entry I grew up on and I think if you think you might like life/farm management sims, it's well worth the price, and this is a great way to try it out
  • DuckTales Remastered was just alright IMO, I couldn't get into it much
  • I don't think Affordable Space Adventures would be as fun as a Solo player but it's hard to say since I've only played about 30 mins in co-op and it didn't grab me especially
  • I love Pikmin 3 but the missions are really more of score and goal chasing, it doesn't feel as engrossing to me as the regular gameplay. I preferred the Pikmin 2 challenges.
  • 3DL starts out pretty easy, but gets a lot more engaging as you play through it, especially the back half of the game. The levels are bite size fun, it's like a proto-3DW which makes sense. If you like 3D Mario, you might find a lot to love in there
  • I'll forever go to bat for Dream Team, as you said it's much like BiS, the two are about equal in mind; the tutorials are plentiful in the first 1/3 of the game but part of that is because so many creative mechanics are thrown at the player. I found it picks up considerably after that first third. Epic boss battles, too, some of my favorite in any Mario RPG.
  • Luigi's Mansion 2 is wonderful and under-appreciated, LM3 is even better with the less mission-oriented approach but if you're a fan of the series this has ton of excellent and well-designed set pieces, and the boss battles are especially a highlight

Anyone know if Ikachan is worth picking up, or should I just stick to the OG PC version? It's by the Cave Story / Kero Blaster guy IIRC.

3D Land is definitely a good Mario. Not sure why you’d assume it’d be your least favorite.

Affordable Space Adventures is worth it if you have people to play it with. It’s a unique experience that only really works on the Wii U. It’s not very replayable, but I have no regrets getting it.

Ducktales is a remaster of an NES game and it shows. My kid and I had a good time going through it, but it’s not some great game, it’s just fine. The appeal is more about the presentation and having the original cast doing voices.

Mario 64 DS will work with the analogue stick but only in a fake way as it will limit you to 8 way movement. You can however move analogue with the touch screen. No recollection if that’s at all enjoyable but some people seem to like it.

If you’re debating Xenoblade Chronicles X, just ask yourself if you liked exploring the worlds in any of the other Xeno games. If so, then I’d say get it. If you’re still unsure, then download the DLC packs anyways in case you ever decide to pick up the disc.

Yeah, it’s brutal. I moved the Badge Arcade into a folder instead of keeping on the Home Screen. It’s time to stop opening it. 😢

Anyone know if Ikachan is worth picking up, or should I just stick to the OG PC version? It's by the Cave Story / Kero Blaster guy IIRC.
I found it fairly underwhelming. It’s less than an hour long and doesn’t do much interesting in that time.

hmmm so im finally down to three games. picked up the DQ games since no way they are getting ported to anything else, particularly 7 since it was made with nintendo money. 8 might show up but who knows with squeenix. now my wishlist is just fe echoes, bowser's inside story and planet robobot. i really dont want to spend anymore money tho so which one of these should i pick up? might pick up only one, pray that resellers show mercy and get everything else physical later, pick up some themes and some stray dlc and call it day.

Really wish they'd do a sale on these DQ games.

Robobot is one of the best Kirby games and 3DS games in general. BIS is better on DS, I think.

I found it fairly underwhelming. It’s less than an hour long and doesn’t do much interesting in that time.
Sounds like Nicalis went digging through Pixel’s back catalog and thought they could make a quick buck. I’ll stick to the freeware version, thanks!

Are any of the 'Deluxe' Kirby minigames worth it if you already own Triple Deluxe and Robobot? I don't particularly care about Fighters Deluxe, but the other ones might be worthwhile if others think so?

Agreed with Mekanos, Robobot is your best bet here. Exemplary game, port is unlikely for at least a year, and BiS is at least as good on DS.

Good question! I used this list to decide:

I nabbed Blowout Blast despite the Robobot iteration not grabbing me much; the comparison between the full game and the Treasure Road stages I loved in Forgotten Land sold me. If I wasn't terrible at rhythm games I'd have picked up Dedede Drum Dash DX for sure, too.

Purchases are ending after this week, but is there a set date for how long you can download games you have purchased? Or is that tomorrow as well?
they're not taking the whole network down. the only store I even know of that got completely shut and removed is the original original xbox live thing (OG Xbox!)

this is exactly why it always bothers me when press and gamers keep talking about it as "closing the shop" as if it's literally not going to be accessible anymore.

I wouldn’t expect it for years. Wii downloads are still good and it’s been closed for 4 years and can still download. DSi shops did close but that at least went to 3DSz

It's funny how the eShop is closing in a day, but the music is still as upbeat and happy as ever. Imagine if they changed it to Majoras Mask final hours sometime tomorrow

Not to add to anyone else's FOMO but the Wii U shop closure means it's pretty much the window is ending on legally getting Pikmin 1 & 2 and Rhythm Heaven Fever for a not stupid price.

That's actually true for a lot of the VC titles. While NSO has many of the VC games, you will only be able to rent them going forward; and for DS and Wii stuff, you will in many cases not get these games physically for the price on offer now on the eShop.

Picked up Dragon Quest VII and VIII. So now my 3DS RPG backlog sits at:

DQ VII and VIII
Bravely Second
Radiant Historia
Persona Q2
Shin Megami Tensei IV

Still kicking myself that I never picked up Tales of the Abyss when it was relatively cheap a few years ago but whatcha gonna do?

Re: Mario 64 DS, with homebrew, you can play your original copy downloaded from the eShop with real analog movement.

Those are must haves at the price for anyone interested. Pikmin 2 in particular has been pricy for years, even pre-pandemic. I sold my Wii copy and switched to a digital Wii copy instead on Wii U.
