StarTopic Octopath Traveler II |ST| Boosted Journey Day & Night

Me exploring the sea, going places I clearly shouldn’t be yet:

“Sense of danger is overwhelming…” - Yeah yeah it’ll be fine, I’ll check it out.

“Divide the party” - Uhhh what

epic new music track kicks in - This was probably a bad idea

I've not yet got the boat but if what I think that's hinting at based on my time with previous asano games, what I think it could be, oh no.

(Shout out to the entire optional dungeon they reused in bravely default 2 from 1 that I don't think anyone but me noticed from when I googled it at the time, though at this point I also don't even remember which one)

Finally finished Throné and with that all eight stories. Working on the crossed path to unlock the ending. I was expecting something weirder based on the comments on reddit and other forums, but honestly
and organization based on a immortal where most of the member are family (actually half-brother / sisters as they only share the father) it's not on my top 10 of "weirdest thing" anime/games has done. Saint Seiya did it before

Well, I don't know if it's too weird, but it's definitely a rather sudden and moody twist, and it sort of recontextualizes the whole story. That and the fact that it also plays into the endgame narrative, which is pretty neat. Didn't know Saint Seiya of all things had done it too ahahah

Personally once I have something hyped up by others I'm almost always left a touch cold when it happens, so maybe that played into your expectations as well?

By the way @paranoodle, that
villains spelling OCTOPATH backwards thing, devilish devs. The mobile game kind of does it as well 🙃. if we get an OT3 I'm gonna be on the look out for any character whose name starts with those letters. It's gonna be a long list lol

And the UI thing: it's the braziers going out right? It's gotta be, surely?

Re spoiler-
yeah, it’s them going out in the background of the story, where you can’t see what the villains are up to. Quite clever really as it’s creepy and then suddenly an ‘oh, I get it!’ in the endgame

Yeah I think the thing with it too is mostly that it takes her story in a different direction/flavor of upsetting/horror? It shifts her story from mainly being about familial abuse to also being about reproductive horror/abuse. It's weird as in it'll make you go "oh what the fuck", but it's not hard to describe or never-seen-before or anything.

Yeah, like PK said, it's that. They also re-light in the UI during the last chapter as you light them back up yourself.

All these spoilers are telling me I need to get my ass in gear and finish up the game, haha. I'm at the last chapters for everyone, just want to get a few of them up to par level wise.

At least you didn’t stumble into it the way I did. I had an NPC in a sidequest say ‘I want to do some research on an island’ and thought they meant that island, only to turn up and find the gates open because of something I’d did on a different set of sidequests. Which meant I pretty much
dragged them into the gates of hell with me

Whoops. I mean, look, they knew what they were getting into getting dragged around by the party. Probably.

I didn't realize that stats cap at 999. That makes endgame equipment and adjusting much different than I expected, as you're not going to just pump everything into your damage stat (like i have been with Osvald all game). Hmmm.

Damn, last boss killed me, but was my fault because forgot team B wasn't prepared correctly with secondary jobsand equipment, spent the morning optimizing it and going to try later in the night. Worts case just use the merchant pay to win

There should be a waiver

"Do you understand that by being hired/guided by the Sacred Flame/fed some dubiously sourced jerky/seduced that you may be subject to monsters, assorted villainous characters, and attacking and dethroning god?"

“Sorry mr Partitio sir, I’m gonna need to increase my day rate if we’re going to fight the elder gods. Oh wait, hang on, your pal there will throw in a bit of that jerky with some hair still on it? Dang it, I’m in!”

I have been hit with the dreadful realization that there may be less than 5 hours worth of "proper" content in this game for me. I only have Osvald's final chapter and the endgame left.

What am I gonna do in this imminent octopathless life?

I’m dangerously close to starting a playthrough of the first one but I’m lucky enough not to have played it before :D

This is going to be me after finishing it today

So moving on to chapter 3s and I am liking themanos and oswald stories the most. The rest is pretty good too but those two stand out for me. I also enjoyed a Throne chapter where she had drinks with a certain person and I loved how she handled all that.

Me imagining this being Partitio's battle theme:

Someone's done art of Partitio jamming out on a saxophone by now, surely?

Finished Agnea's story! Despite the relatively low stakes, I really enjoyed it. I'm kind of a sucker for stuff like that though.

And "Song of Hope" will be stuck in my head for a while now.

Finally finished it. This is a 9.9

Me at the end:

oJJdlsQ.jpg

That decimal left out just because
not having any real music while investigating the night makes it kinda boring. I undertand what they tried to do but they could add a modified battle track or something.I ended putting the ost in my pc just to have something

Finished my first tale — Partitio’s. What a great ending for one of the best characters in a game filled with excellent characters! Found his last boss fairly tough; after a few tries I busted out the maxed out Hired Help for the first time and YEP, that’s pretty helpful lol. Will have to keep that in mind as I trudge on.

Agnea Chapter 5 up next 💃

I’ve gone back to play the original Octopath Traveller after finishing OTII. While there’s so many larger things that people have touched on regarding improvements to the original, the first thing I noticed was a tiny one- upon giving a nut to a character, OTII tells you how many points their stat went up by, OTI doesn’t, leaving you to go in and compare before and after. Such a tiny QoL change towards elegance. Also, the dungeons in OTII display their threat level on the map- in OT you have to remember it.

Also the backstories once the other characters join are much shorter, as the recap has them meet your party just before they head into their intro dungeon to fight their first boss. I think OT2 is better with its longer intros as you get more time with that character having to face challenges with scant resources and initial allies, so it feels more desperate.

I keep hearing how hired help is busted, but I have yet to use it even once. At this point it's a kind of a self-imposed challenge for me to never use it until the secret boss.

At the end there's is not really any other use for the money rather hired help. Even if you are constantly paying for Alrond Services to farm(and at some point Temenos is going to be to guide it for free) you still would have more than a million.
In my case I've only used it twice: the water whirpool boss and in my B team at the final fight just to end quickly that part and go to the next phase

Agnea’s story overall wasn’t my favorite and was kind of just… light and fun? But hoo boy that finale killed it. That’s the best boss track in the game so far, I love how that entire thing played out

Why can I freaking make progress with this game? Players another 4 hours and did no progress in any chapter. Is this Xenoblade 3 all over again? It's just so fun to talk to everyone and do battles. Ryza 3 is around the corner and then TotK, what am I supposed to do?????

Anybody that has played live a live.. is it a good filler until octopath 3? I’m craving another rpg…
It’s worth a play- comparatively short at ~25 hours. I liked it but it’s a real mixed bag of ideas. If you go in looking at it as a grab bag of rpg ideas then you won’t go far wrong. Some of it is quite dated (the raw mysogyny of the prehistory chapter) but I did really like some of the others, and the final chapter rounds it all off really well.

Seriously what's the deal with hikari's chapter 2 boss ? I can't beat him, he's absurdly tough...

So is this game the real deal? Asking as someone, who though the first Octopath was "only" a solid 6.5 out of 10.
depends of what you felt OT was lacking. I'm just starting but the "more but better" doesn't make it justice since I feel is a great leap but still carries some of the same things from the first one.

Just as someone who’s gone back and played the first 6 hours of Octopath after completing Octopath II, the latter is miles ahead. There’s so many small QoL improvements (listing the threat level of dungeons on the map so you know when to go back and try them is a major one for me). But major changes also include more variety in height, ladders and rafts, more dungeon variety, the sea, and the map being more interesting. The altars are rounded out to have seperate guilds for the jobs. The latent powers give much more pace and a variety of character-specific powerful moves in combat. The opening chapters are more compelling and give each character more room to breathe before the main party can carry them. The characters talk more, both about events and in ‘crossed paths’ sections.

It’s superficially similar, but every aspect of the game is tuned up for OTII. The only exception is the soundtrack which is great in both.

Could not have said it better! It’s downright a bit shocking just how much more complex and confident the execution is here.

I could have finished the game today.

I was at the last save point, just in front of the final boss, but I didn't.

I don't want it to be over so I straight-up stalled myself.

What the fuck!

You have to manually trigger the ending & epilogue scenes, so you can go ahead and do that without feeling "done".

You also probably have a good 10-20 hours to do the rest of the side content and prep for the superboss. I really like how difficult they balanced the postgame superboss-- you don't have to be maxed out in all of the different pillars of the game, but you need to be very good and well-rounded in all aspects of the game to reliably succeed.

I think the XXXXX's Next Chapter! sidequests that unlock as you beat stories are generally fantastic and are useful for unlocking things to use on the postgame bosses.

It ain't AAA, but they really threw a budget at this game. There's probably about twice as many overall frames of animation or more, plus far more visual effects, sound engineering, and attention to scene composition and unique animations (like each character having some totally different dance moves for each or some Dancer skills)

Just left off at the setup to Hikari’s Chapter 5 and I am stoked. Gonna play that one on TV I think! I want a whole ass game set in the Kingdom of Ku

Yeah to me it’s an awesome example of iterative improvement that often goes unappreciated until you return to an earlier entry.
