Every forum needs one, so now this one has it: Sonic the Hedgehog, even in 3D, is great.

It's fantastic and I look forward to this forum being filled with Sonic

Why start with such a bad slate of Sonic games lol! What we should be applauding is the 2D series of games as Sonic just doesn’t work in 3D.

Actually. Sonic 4 doesn’t exist in my mind but Sonic 1-3 is a perfect evolution of the series that I might need to play again

No love for the iconic racing games?

I think a lot of people are aware of how amazing Transformed is, but the original game is also very good. Try to get it on 360 though, it has two exclusive characters and online multiplayer. (The PC version was released back when SEGA wasn't as good at doing ports on there, not to mention the fact Steam/Steamworks wasn't fully solidified as the main source for games on that platform by that point, hence why it's missing)

I still haven't played Team Sonic Racing yet, but i'd imagine it's around the same level as the first despite the lack of SEGA characters, aside from the music, which might be even better than Transformed!

I was going to let this thread pass without letting my dislike for one of those five games (hint: it isn't Adventure, Adventure 2, Colors or Generations) get the better of me

but we've already got a "Sonic can't work in 3D" post so the dream of civility is dead. Heroes stinks.

The rumors are true. I like to play the fast blue rat games.

Some rumors say that the 3D games are a mixed bag but great when they hit their stride, but that hasn’t been verified yet.

Sonic Mania cemented that 2D Sonic is a series I can appreciate and be thankful it exists, but just isn’t for me. Banging soundtrack though.

3D Sonic is just plain bad all around.

I'm glad that the Mania devs are poised to reveal their new 3D game soon, but will forever side-eye Sega for just not getting them immediately to work with a sequel to Mania.

Let it be known: Sonic Adventure 2 was far better than Sunshine!

I just adore the 2D ones and think that speed in a 3D plane is hard to do right without relying on rhythm button mashing to chain attacks. And let’s not forget the awful voice acting. I can forgive much, but Sonic really thrives in 2D. I had more fun with Sonic trilogy over the original Mario trilogy

The series is great in spite of Sega. And it can't be denied that Sonic has had more misses than hits in 3d no matter how much I've wanted to like some of those games.

They should put the Adventure games on Switch. Even if they probably don't hold up, they'd still be a fun nostalgia trip for me.

You had me until you showed Heroes. I mean, I didn't hate it but golly the time I replayed it the game did not go through the polish it needed.

Unfortunately polish seems to be something the bigger Sonic games struggle with.

I skipped Colors Ultimate but I'm interested to see how Sonic Origins and Rangers turn out.

Hottake but 3D Sonic is way more hit than miss imo. And even the worst games can still have a lot of good stuff in them.

Sorry to bump an oldie but I felt this thread needed my profile picture in it.

Heroes was my first Sonic game and I (mostly) enjoyed playing it at the time. It was however one of the most jank and broke games I've played to this day and could never hope to progress anywhere with it outside of Team Rose.

Sonic had great games and cartoons and movies and comics, but I wouldn't consider it a great franchise at this point, or any point recently.

Now I have the Sonic Heroes theme stuck in my head!!!

I always had a good time with Sonic, sure some of the games are... undercooked to say the least but I always have a good time. The Dreamcast is so special to me and Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were some of the games I played the most on that system.

Only 3d game i genuinly like is SA1. 2d games all the classics and mania.

Used to be rabbid sonic fan but sonic 4 destroyed me. Been more of a passive fan since then.

I have a strange love for sonic 06 yeah I'm a weirdo. That game needs a complete remake imo with a complete different story. That game had a lot of wasted passion and potential poured into it. The stages were awesome. Kingdom valley. Crisis City. That volcano level. The game could have had the best stages in all 3d sonic games and they were different for all 3 characters. It's crazy how I am writing the most about a broken game like 06 lol but I just never liked the boost games. I dont like the way sonic controls since sonic unleashed. I dont like the cheap thrill of boost to win.

Here's hoping sonic Rangers controls better and has no stupid boost. What I also hate are the reticules tbh. It doesn't feel right. SA1, 2 did just fine without the *beep beep noises.

/rant 😅

Classic 2D games will always be the best Sonic games, with Mania+ topping all them.

Colors and Generations are the best 3D Sonic games and they are great.

3D Blast, Unleashed and Lost World are underrated good Sonic games and they deserve more love.

Adventure games are extremely overrated and Sonic 06 is Adventure 3.

I will always have fantastic memories of playing Sonic 2 with my sister as a kid. To this day, I think Sonic games are comfort food and their own wild thing that, while not always masterpieces, are always at least fun in some way.

The Sonic Adventure games are flawed but it was a good foundation, they should have continued refining that gameplay instead of reinventing the wheel every couple years.

I still think a majority of 3D Sonic is at least decent.

Sonic Unleashed was pretty fun! I liked the mix of the courses and the music. That opening sequence is one of the best in the franchise.

Sonic Unleashed Daytime is a lot of fun, and the DLC challenges are totally worth it. The worst parts of Sonic Unleashed (night time stages) are mediocre at worst but are propped up by some of the best music in Sonic (and that's a feat) and great art direction that will make the first time through more bearable.

Sonic has a very strong foundation as a character, which I really admired about the series, and I can see why many people would return to Sonic even on his worse days. In this manner, it would be similar to Garfield because he too has a strong foundation as a character. The games may not always be a hit, but the environmental designs are very creative, complemented by the melodious music.

This is an unpopular opinion, but I felt that Sonic Lost World is a good base for 3D controls, which would benefit from some improvements. What I liked is that it has a more flexible sense of movement, namely the parkour which can facilitate wall-climbing and -running in a way that's intuitive since you don't necessarily lose speed when colliding them, and there is a button to control speed (though I felt that the movement button would be better suited for braking instead of running). Having two forms of attack is a nice change of pace, as with the ability to have different strengths in targeting. The thing that I find amusing is that the parkour mechanic in this game is not needed to complete the game, since there are Wisps around to help those who had trouble with it. I have a certain fondness for the Deadly Six, because they are unconventional designs, and perhaps it's a good thing that they are overall more adaptable for future roles compared to many of the other villains (besides Eggman), despite being underutilised thus far.

Thank you for reading.

There's so much I love about Sonic. The characters, the music, the sense of style, the comics, the caroons.

About the only thing I DON'T like about Sonic is the gameplay. Not because I think it's bad, but because I suck at it. In either 2D or 3D, I'm just no good at Sonic's faster gameplay. Still, even as an observer rather than a player, I still love that blue blur.

Man, I could go for a chili dog right now.

I've been on a Dreamcast memory lane binge recently and this thread was a major contributor lol. I went ahead and plugged in my DC (still with Sonic Adventure in the drive) and the disc drive is shot. Gonna have to invest in a GDemu or something :(

For now the Dreamcast will live in my display, once I get around installing a GDemu (and who knows, a DC HDMI mod) I'll return to playing some Sonic Adventure the way it was intended to :p

I really adore Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors. The latter I liked playing through on my Xbox in its remade form.
I also LOVED all three Sonic racing games by Sumo Digital--even Team Sonic Racing which I felt was a really fun and great arcade racer. I understood why many balked at it due to the lack of SEGA all-stars and CTR releasing the following month, but I very much dug the game.

Sonic Mania will forever by one of my favorite 2D platformers as well. :)

Sonic 1, 2 and Mania are really good. I have the 3DS and the Switch M2 versions.

It is one of the franchises that I remember liking the 2D games way more than the 3D ones.

I love how sonic can put out some of the best games of all time and also some true stinkers. Always keeps you guessing. Also one of the few franchises where the fan games are any good, with Sonic Robo Blast 2 being one of the all time best.

Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic Forces and Sonic 1 are all personally in my top 50 games of all time.

My favorite "bad" Sonic game is Sonic Blast. That game is so ugly lol

I have really fond memories of the Genesis version of Sonic Blast. I know a lot of people consider it a black sheep but I really like it. I love the music, was at the right age where the graphics were still really impressive to me (I was fresh off Mario RPG so "3D" isometric was cool), and I still replay it every once in a while and it holds up, somehow.

There was a video done by one of the Travelers Tales developers who showed the programming voodoo they did to make that game work on the Genesis. Kinda impressive, I think.

I played some Sonic Advance as a kid and could never get into it much. I also tried the Lost World demo on Wii U and same thing. I wanna say I tried Colors on Wii but maybe not. If I was gonna try a Sonic game on NSO is there a recommendation? Maybe I should try 3&K on 360 instead? I want something where I can save. Though the NSO version will have suspend points. I'm also interested in Generations. I was waiting to see if Mania would ever come to Game Pass or go below $10 but it hasn't AFAIK.

I'm a big Sonic fan but even I'll admit Lost World was a misstep. I didn't even finish it. As @Brock Reiher said above, the series really does keep you guessing as far as what's going to be worthwhile. The Genesis games, however, are consistently great. 1, 2, CD, and 3&K are all awesome. Sonic 2 is currently on NSO but If you don't mind being patient, Sega are porting all four games in a collection called Sonic Origins, which should be releasing early next year. Sega's saying the collection will actually be ports, not simply emulated, so some enhancements are being made such as all the games being in 16:9.

If you already have the NSO expansion, by all means give Sonic 2 a go. But S3K and Sonic CD are top-notch as well so if you enjoy S2 then keep an eye out for that collection. And as far as the 3D era games, Generations is a good way to enjoy the highlights, and Colors is also good. Those two are probably your best bets for the 3D era. And while it's rough around the edges I really love Adventure 1, which I think is cheap on 360.

I wish he did sonic's voice in the mainline games. Oh well Roger Craig Smith is kinda okay.
I wish he'd take over for the games, too, but alas. Also dang, the tweet he was responding to got deleted. 😑
