StarTopic Octopath Traveler II |ST| Boosted Journey Day & Night

I dunno how some of you get so much time to game lol, I've played about 14 hours so far and feel like it's a LOT, just starting chapter 2's.

Had my first wipe on Hikari's chapter 2 boss. Same issue I had with Octopath 1 in that your first run through a boss just feels like a practice run and you're really not gonna have a chance until you at least know their weaknesses. Like he had an ability where he locks out half his weaknesses and only dagger and fire attacks worked to break -- but I didn't have any of my dagger characters leveled up or in the party. So in those phases I struggled with it taking way too long to get the breaks off single hit fire spells and Hikari's counter. So now I swapped out Osvald (who was basically useless in the fight) with Throne, but have to go level her up first since I haven't even used her yet at all. And I'm sure my second time in the fight will be fine, I had him in the red on the first go but just lost the war of attrition.

I remember in Octopath 1 I would get to the point where I'd just reveal all a boss weaknesses, snap a screenshot, and reload my save. You just end up wasting a bunch of time otherwise or, if you do manage to beat one on the first go, use up a lot more resources than you needed to.
My most used skill that Hikari has learned from beating people up is the one that reveals two weaknesses. So useful, he’s better at it than Osvald :D

I haven't had a huge issue with that personally, but I think it might be down to party composition? I usually try to get full weakness coverage across the party, via subjobs, so I don't have to entirely swap out characters mid-chapter. My build for most of the game so far was:
  • Hikari on thief (sword, spear, dagger, dark) and then on armsmaster as soon as I unlocked it (all weapons) around level 20, and I used some of his learned skills to cover either multi-hit attacks (for faster breaks) or elemental attacks. Armsmaster is really good for weaknesses once you get it, since it has an attack that hits with every weapon type.
  • Osvald on any non-cleric job (staff, fire, ice, lightning, + whatever the subjob brings) and then on arcanist once I got that (adds dagger, light and dark), also around level 20. His elemental barrage is really good for finding out several weaknesses in a single turn. If you have Temenos on your party instead, putting him on scholar and using boosted elemental barrage with his latent power will absolutely shred through weaknesses.
  • Ochette on uh, anything (axe, bow, lightning, + whatever the subjob brings), if you go around capturing stuff you can have a huge spread of weaknesses covered, especially if you get the "double hit (all)" type ones.
  • Flex option for anything you can't cover with the other three. I usually had Agnea because I had her allure someone who gave a 75SP regen anytime I used a dance, which meant that I could spam skills basically as much as I wanted even during boss fights. She's also one of the only sources of wind unless you set someone else to dancer.
I definitely got the secret classes earlier than you're meant to, but even before then I could get a pretty decent spread. If you get inventor, which you can get as early as like, level 5-10, one of the starting skills for that lets you use any physical attack type every 2 turns, which is pretty decent coverage, and one of the later unlockable skills gives you some all-element coverage too.

Also, you don't need to powerlevel characters all that much when you swap in someone new. You'll want enough JP to cover the skills you want access to right away, but in terms of stats a couple levels doesn't make as much difference as just giving them the better gear you've already found. I did Castti's last chapter (recommended level 45) with both her and Temenos in the mid-20s and had no trouble, just because I had level ~40-50 gear on them.

Is it just me or is Temenos kind of a smartass.

I don't know I just started the game and I went for the cleric as my first character just like in the first game because if I'm stuck with someone who absolutely has to be in the party at all time it may as well be the healer, although I don't even know if you can shuffle all party members at will in the sequel.

Once you’ve finished your first picks main questline you can kick them out.

Something I forgot to ask, the travel banter between Castii and Partitio during her chapter in Sai has some interesting implications, is it mentionned/developped sometimes later?
Haven't gotten to it yet; will try to keep it mind though!

You do it by dedicating all of your free time to the game ;P

That said I also don't know how some people have already put in more than 50/60 hours. checks playtime 36 hours... I'm not one to talk am I.

Temenos is a great character. Most would agree with you that yes, he's a bit of a smartass. A lovable one though.

And yes, just like in the first game you cannot take him out of your party until you complete his story. I went with him as well, so I'm sure he'll provide you both healing and breaking support aplenty.

Dear Square Enix

You claim that the physical soundtrack is available for the past 5 days, yet you have not even initiated my order which has been already paid for more than a month ago.

Curious!

..........................Actually it's not curious it's fucking bullshit, just send me my goddamn 6 CDs soundtrack so I can upload my ongoing thread and blast that shit full volume in my room!

I just a Botw moment with this game:
So, remember how all of you guys experienced your first blood moon in Botw? I remember mine, I was confused and scared and it was an amazing experience.

That just happened to me with Octopath, I'm travelling and next thing you know, everything is dark, purple, red and some very haunting soundtrack playing. Next thing you know, you get greeted with a dark monster. I'm still confused but amazed lol.

I just had Hikari hit someone for 50,000+ damage in a duel. I assume they are cleaning his poor opponent off the side of the castle wall with a mop…

Support skill to lift the 9999 damage cap and the learned spear skill to translate all your SP into a single hit.

Yeah I was wrong, I had 40 hours at the time of writing lol

Don't know if it's true but I've read that the final boss track has its name on it? In which case consider yourself lucky, you might be dodging a bullet ;p

Happened to me as well. I think it was also mentioned in RPG Site's review of the game. It's real peculiar isn't it? I wonder if it's actually something or just a creepy Easter egg.

Okay, what the fuck? I warped to Flamechurch to start working my way toward Partitio’s Chapter 2, and when I left town the music was different and creepier, I ran into a battle with a purple auroch that cast doom and then after the battle it was day again and it was like nothing ever happened. The hell was that?

I really want to know what triggers these doom monsters now too!
I didn’t realize more people were talking about it since I avoided the spoiler tags, but lol it was in the post right above mine.

The only thing I can think of is that I had just done the Crossed Paths quest with Ochette and Cassti where it was mentioned that the forest animals were all scared by a dark monster they’d never seen before so maybe it’s related?

Yeah that does sound linked. I’m sure it’ll all make sense by the endgame.

I haven’t been so addicted to a game since SMTV. I love the way its vignettes are bite size and there’s always an option for what to do next. If I don’t fancy a later chapter that’s going to be cut scene heavy, there’s always something else to do, often literally a road untaken. The characters are varied enough that the more lighthearted ones offer a chance for pacing the game yourself vs the more serious and cynical (Osvald, Throne) or the more strait-laced but determined (Castii, Hikari) ones. It helps that the side quests are largely interesting too. Some puzzling, some solvable very quickly, some that make no sense until you’ve got a bit more context on your travels. I think once my first four stories are finished I’m gonna take a couple of the newbies (accompanied by a pair of veterans) on a long sea voyage to level them up and see what’s out there.

Implying I haven't already looked it up since the datamine days.

Holy crap the boss monster at the bottom of Ivory ravine west of Gravell.
Level 50 area, my main team was level 58 and I still had to dig deep into the rare items (a ‘heal all, revive all’) and also, for the first time, have Castii debuff the hell out of it with blindness and slow.
Even then we only just made it.

Also. Throne final chapter spoiler -
what exactly was Claude? Just some random immortal?

Finished Castti chapter 2 Sai area and finally got 2 subjobs, (apothecary and warrior which where on the way to Sai) I was wondering when they were going to appear. It really make battles go faster now that Agnea and Castti has more weapons available.

Also everytime you unleash Castti especial attack

This game is massive, I’ve done all Chapter 2s but one, but looking at the map I have so much more to go. And I don’t even have the ship yet! But it does a great job of keeping the individual chapters and sections bite-sized and snappy despite the overall game length.

Yeah I mentioned before but I really like that the dungeons are compact sized, because it really works when you want to have quick sessions, play 10-15 min and let's go, to the next area

There’s something quite funny where I’ve just started Agnea’s chapter 2 after finishing the stories of my first four characters. So it’s all very feisty with our rookie dancer going to have a word with some guy who runs a theatre. But standing behind her is the king of that warrior nation in his epic combat gear, a high level assassin and the most famous apothecary on the planet with a bag of relic weapons. “Still, you go Agnea, we’ll just step in if things get out of hand.”

Implying I haven't already looked it up since the datamine days.
Lol, half-expected this to be honest. And I just saw the Partitio/Cassti banter, quite frankly, I think our meanie apothecary is just teasing the poor fella ;P

I already wrote something on it in post #199, so I can only repost the relevant parts. (It doesn't really spoil anything in regards to Temenos and Osvald's stories, so you're good to go even if you haven't completed them yet)
I could be totally off the mark here once I hit the later stages of the story but, am I alone in thinking that the final chapters (well, the ones I've done so far, i.e. Témenos, Osvald, Throné) sort of feel like a retelling of the first game? Especially Throné's. Not necessarily as far as themes go, but because of how
we seem to have somebody pulling the strings behind the scenes (which isn't exactly uncharacteristic as far as these type of narratives go), and more importantly, due to Cluade and Lostseed. Claude being god knows how many years old definitely reminds us of Mattias, though did he obtain actual immortality or just a life extension like OT 1's prankster? An even bigger deal is Lostseed; all of its inhabitants are vessels. If you've played the first Octopath but need a refresher on its story do you remember how a huge part of its bigger narrative played on Lyblac's quest to resurrect Galdera utilizing Kit as a vessel. We also have people outside of Lostseed being vessels right? The man in Temenos ch. 2's town, the Sun Temple one, who shows after being inquired the same ominous "death destruction ..." message that was in OT 1. Add to that From the Far Reaches of Hell being a book that is sought after by the librarian in Montwise and well... It's a lot, like, a lot of "references".

Again, I could be way off the mark here, and these may be just coincidences, but it's pretty fun stuff to be honest.

Edit: in general these things could also be thought of by the writers as fanservice or as fun inter-textual, meta-ish nods, which is ultimately what I think they'll be.
I wonder if it will be explained later during endgame or if we'll be left in the dark. Same with the creepy encounter thing; it definitely feels hard-coded into the story.

Incidentally, @paranoodle, I just noticed that UI change you mentioned before. I think it happens when you unlock a crossed path chapter 2? Can't think of anything else. Feels a bit like locks to a portal coming undone one by one, though I imagine you might be onto very spoiler-y territory by now, and can't deny nor confirm what I just said ahah

Yeah I'm not 100% sure what the conditions are? For me the first changes happened at some point during my first couple final chapters, I'm not 100% sure because I didn't notice it right away, but it was I think around finishing Ochette's chapter 3 (which I'm like 90% sure was before I unlocked any crossed path second chapters), then the second were after finishing Castti's last chapter, then the third after finishing Temenos's last chapter, and the last quarter didn't go dark until I started the final chapter, at which point uh, more of it obviously changes.

I absolutely agree with you on what it felt like, that's the vibe I got the entire time. I only just started the final chapter though so I don't really have confirmation either way.

Aw Agnea and Hikari are cute together in their crossed paths
“You’ve got money, right Hikari?”
and “You are generous with the benefit of the doubt” :D

I love the differences in ability callouts:

Inventor using a catapult to launch axes at the enemy

Cassti: dead serious “I’ve made my choice.”

Partitio: just short of a yee-haw “Catapult, go go go!”

And I got the ship! I really want to just sail around the whole world nabbing map locations and exploring, but the enemies are no joke so that’s going to have to wait a bit.

This just happened to me, just got the ship and decided to explore a little just to be destroyed by 2 monsters.

Dear Octopath 2 game, if i'm low on health and mana and wanna flee a battle because i'm out of healing items because you kept hitting me with "the enemy ambushed you" battles before, please don't let me have to hit "Flee" 3 times before it actually works.

That is all. Thanks.

I’ve noticed that, flee is really random, especially when you are vastly outmatched in the early game and really need to flee, as it usually means you’ll be dead in two turns.

Agnea is such a sociopath lol.

Tense argument between two strangers? I bet running up and busting a move will resolve the situation!
Yeah. I’ll never understand why people would let others who’ve attacked your friends and then you walk away to resolve it through the power of dance later on, but then I guess I’m not a dancer with hope in my heart. I like to think that in those scenes Hikari was like “or we could just fight to the death right now” and Throne/Osvald were more ‘let’s break their legs and nick their stuff tonight and see how well they perform then.” :D

Still, it’s good in terms of pacing that her story is so lighthearted and personal and, in terms of effect on the game world and others, inconsequential. It’s just completely different to almost all the others in terms of how many bodies hit the floor. It would probably have worked better for me if she was in my initial party rather than doing a few dances while my team of legends follow her around and deal with her mediocre opponents in short order. Was hilarious when apparently her final dance battle was resolved by Hikari hitting the boss for 40,000 damage while Throne stabbed her dozens of times with a knife. Taking the confrontation to a really strange metaphor. I guess the team were busting some really solid moves out there on the dance floor!

One of the cleric passives increases fleeing chances btw; it's one of the later ones though!

Good to know, thanks. But as of now, where i'm still solo Osvald traveling at the beginning of the game, i wish there was another option. ;D

Though, Engage's DLC is out today, so i'm back to Engage and pause this until i'm done with FE. ^^

Sooo who did ya'll choose as Ochette's primary companion in chapter 1?

It was a tough choice for me as I am forever indecisive and I like both of them. In the end I went with the fox solely for story reasons - when it comes to his personality he comes across as more mature and less flighty than the owl (no pun intended) which I think counterbalances Ochette's inexperience and impulsiveness nicely, and I like his voice better. Also when you pick a companion at the beginning it seems like the other is overcome with darkness, which I find is more fitting for the owl due to the association with the night and the moon. So this is why I went with Mr. Fox, despite Ms. Owl's elemental attacks which also seem very useful from a gameplay perspective.

I did the opposite! I picked the owl because visually it made for more contrast, I liked its design better, and I assumed I would have more trouble meeting elemental weaknesses than physical. That last bit ended up mattering a lot less than I expected, honestly, but I still really liked Matiha so it worked out.

Still made me sad for the jackal though ;-;

I agonised over it. ‘Pick the fox or owl with zero context’ :D

I took the owl in the end but I do wonder if I’d have found the fox a more fun companion

Yeah, in my heart I was like "But I want both!! You're asking me to choose between my friends, that's so cruel!" Agonizing decision for sure.

The cleric passive helps, as does your speed I believe. But it’s a bit odd there’s not a “smoke bomb” item you can use to escape or a skill that does the same, those are pretty much staples in most RPGs. Unless they were worried about you abusing them to nab overpowered gear early or something?

I also picked the owl, find it more interesting.

Finished Agnea chapter two on my way to the other town to advance Castti story. I found funny the theater counted as a dungeon because really, you wonder who would attack you in there besides the manager henchmen, and then enemy dancers appears and some lamps

Mahina seems like the stronger one for gameplay as well, though I imagine both are outclassed pretty quickly.
Tbh I think you really just use them to flag up a weakness at the start of the fight- their attacks are pretty weak compared to other options even before you start recruiting monsters

They can also be decent if you end up on some fights you have no good weakness options for, especially bosses that block off some of their weaknesses during different phases. But it's definitely more of a stopgap for if you have nothing better to be using.

It's genuinely impressive how this game is making me love and care about the main characters. In Octopath 1, despite 100%ing and enjoying it, I didn't care for all the main characters whereas in 2, I'm so intrigued by every single main character story and how hilarious the banters are.

Team Asano has been improving A LOT in terms of story writing as of late. Triangle Strategy is another example.

The “crossed paths” and increased banter really helps so much. I didn’t know I needed Cassti being Ochette’s mom and telling her to eat a damn vegetable sometimes, but it’s perfect.

Boy does the game makes you feel like an ass some times. Doing Hikari ch2 and there is this house guarded. You inquiry and its a gladiator and then once you beat/drug him his wife is like "get the hell out" (which make sense) and then you iniquiry and she is the former champion and once you beat her, you get their engagement bow and I'm like "uh sorry...."

There’s a few houses like that, where anyone guarding a door looks suspicious (as story routes require you to get past them, or there’s good items etc), but as often as not it’s just NPCs protecting their house and family, as if heavily armed travellers with zero respect for property are around… :D I think I’ve pretty much robbed everyone blind at this point too. Mostly as the easiest way to stay stocked up on consumables and grab quest items is just having throne rob people on principle.

If we get to the end and there’s some kind of morality mechanic I’m gonna be like “OK. Ya got me.” :D
