Discussion Ys X: Nordics to launch for PS5, PS4, and Switch on September 28, 2023 in Japan

Excited for Ys X. Hope you aren’t restricted where you can go with the boat. I love being able to get into trouble. Also yay boat battles!

Ok I now have a new most hyped game for 2023.

I wonder how possible is a worldwide launch. Whom I'm kidding, Nisa couldn't even have a worldwide release for their own flagship title lol

More Ys is always welcome, but please, please remove the defense missions like 8 and 9

The good thing is Nisa is slowly catching up. With Trails From Zero out and Trails to Azure out in March, soon we’ll just be looking forward.

I'd rather have them prioritize this instead of Kuro no Kiseki games. Otherwise we'll end up playing this no earlier than 2025.

Falcom used to not hand over their games to work on until after they release, so I imagine Nisa is already doing some early work on both Kuros. I’m not too worried about YS X here. Probably late 2024 or very early 2025 for us.

We pirates now.

Not the first time Adol has worked with pirates.

There seem to be some cues taken from the traversal in Ys IX (looks like Adol is swinging from a rope of some sorts and the girl is riding on a hoverboard), but the sailing stuff is new. As much as I liked Monstrum Nox, I'm also glad that it seems to be more outdoors-focussed rather than hanging around a city all the time. Apparently the game also takes place earlier in the series, some speculating right after Ys II, but before IV, VIII and III.

Haven't played IX yet but if this is as good as VIII I'll be happy for sure.

According to the plot description Gematsu has, this one takes place right after Ys II.

It takes place in the northern sea Obelia Bay, made up of countless islands "big and small"

Additionally, Ys X: Nordics allows you to control a ship for the first time in the series. Explore vast oceans using sea maps as your guide and engage in naval battles against enemy ships in this new feature that adds to “the joy of adventure” that the series is known for.

So what you’re saying is that the adventurer who dooms every ship he steps foot on, can now choose from vast range of potential shipwreck locations. I hope that losing a naval battle dumps your party in the water and has you wash up on a nearby beach :D

Ys VIII was excellent and while I didn't think IX was quite as good, I still really enjoyed it. It sounds like they're making some notable changes from that style for X. I like the idea of exploring an archipelago, especially after the largely city-based IX, but I do wonder how this will fare (pun intended) performance wise on Switch. VIII and IX each had their issues in that regard. Presumably by the time it gets an international release we'll have the option of playing it on more powerful Nintendo hardware, so perhaps simply brute forcing decent performance will be an option...

Assuming Oath of Felghana will be an eShop port of the Windows game?

They redid the character art and added some other new features like a speed toggle so it’s a remaster.

Love the key visual! Looking forward to it. Hopefully Falcom can get their stuff in order and actually shorten the delay between jp and ww release, as Kondo seems to be hinting at in the investor's QA.

The new combat system looks fine, from what can be gathered anyway. I wonder how big of a role ship gameplay will have, because it kinda does go against their previously stated desire to keep Ys fast-paced, doesn't it? (of course less intense, more exploration focused gameplay is needed in a longer rpg. We'll see I guess)

It's gotta be said though, their internal engine isn't much of a step up from Phyre. At the same time it's also true that they are still targeting 60fps on PS4 so... there's only so much that can be done.

I have good news for you. Noisypixel did an articel about what has already been revealed about Ys X, and 1) Adol will largely be mute and 2) Ys won't have large scripts like it's typical for Trails.
That’s great news after Ys IX. Leave the fantasy cities full of verbose NPCs to Trails, I vastly prefer the arcadey, fast-paced combat of Ys without endless lists of sidequests and fifty different shops and cafes, crafting and subsystems.

Given that the promotional screenshots are from a PlayStation build, I'm kinda afraid that this'll be downported to Switch after it's content complete.
Oooor it's going to release on Drake only. >:-)

that's overthinking it. Falcom already said their games going forward will be on switch day and date.

It all comes down to how the engine runs for all versions. IX wasn't optimized for anything and the new mechanics pushed the limits of the engine beyond what it was capable of doing. Still the first screen shots look promising.

That's not what I'm talking about, though. My worries are about the development pipeline and setup, not about the publishing side of things.
Eh, at this point in time might as well keep on developing for ps4 as a baseline, after all their games all target 60 fps (on base ps4). They've got plenty of room to make a downport work.

Their first switch in-house game was Nayuta but that is a port. But we have not seen a switch game in their current engine. Meaning Ys X will be the first one, and my guess is the other 2 projects are the Kuro games that are also in the new engine. We shall see how flexible their engine is.

Weekly Famitsu feature. Tidbits from Gematsu

  • “‘Nordics’ is a term that means ‘people of the north.'”
  • “The time period goes way back—after the events of Ys I and II. Adol is 17 years old and on his way to Celceta (which is brought up in the manual preface of Ys I!).”
  • “Dr. Flair Rall is traveling with you.”
  • “It’s a story of boys and girls. Since this is the first time we’re releasing on Switch, the main characters are younger, and part of that was considering the userbase.”
  • “There are only two playable characters (Adol and the axe girl). That being said, the action is dense and there are all sorts of things you can do.”
  • “There are town(s), but your base will always be your ship.”
  • “Solo Mode offers the usual high-speed battles [of the Ys series]. Combination Mode lets you pull off more powerful attacks, but the overall speed of battle is slower so you can fight more carefully. (The speed only changes on Adol’s side.) You can only switch to Combination Mode when holding down a certain button, and it switches back to Solo Mode when said button is released.”
  • “Defense carries major weight. Guarding builds up your Revenge Gauge, which can increase your attack power.”
  • “We’ve taken considerable care to adjust the difficulty level so that a wide range of users can enjoy the game.”
  • “There are special actions called ‘Mana Actions.’ There’s more freedom when performing mid-air actions.”
  • “About 20 percent of the game is sailing your ship. There are maps dedicated to ship and naval battles occur when you encounter enemies. There is also a growth (i.e. character development) element to the ship.”
  • “We’ll release new footage(s) either in the early New Year or in the spring.”
  • “Hopefully the release date will be around the same time as usual. (Laughs.)”
  • “We’re quite aware of the challenge we’re undertaking in the new field that is Switch. Production is currently underway with the intention of making a game that both series newcomers and fans alike can enjoy.”

Its funny seeing that Ys X being the first multiplat release they want to build the Ys audience on switch by having a more "light hearted" story. At least that what I get from the 4th line.

This sounds wrong as hell and they know it.

Yep it's funny. They assume the taste of Switch userbase by looking at Mario, not BotW or Xenoblade. Hard to blame them, Mario is massive.

Even with Falcom embracing Switch development, they still find a way to bum you out. That's an achievement in and of itself.

Is it just me that finds characters wearing shorts while swinging swords in rpgs really daft. Or is it some sort of lace-up short trousers and a hoodie or something.

Not really convinced that it launching on Switch as part of a multiplat is why the characters are younger, since when has a JRPG needed an excuse for teenage protagonists :D I’m not even convinced that enough of a portion of the Switch user base is so young as to make it a clear reason to do so- perhaps it skews a little younger than the others but I suspect the majority of the userbase skews way older than that just on raw numbers.

Combination mode sounds interesting. Should allow for more tactics than the AI party members flailing away in the last few games.

Looks interesting
Hopefully will be more similar to VIII than IX, and will also run better on Switch than IX
Yeah I’m mostly looking forward to it being Adol the Adventurer out, well, adventuring again. Island hopping is always fun and I like the vibrant colours more than the relentless grey of IX’s city and dungeons.

We got some screenshots and artwork for Adol and the new character, Carja. It seems that tomorrow/late tonight we will get the Famitsu article with more info.

So, reading Gematsu tweet the artwork comes from @toi81008 which, if you dont know, was the artist for Tokyo Mirage Sessions. I loved the artwork and colors of that game so I'm excited.

In game image looks good but the character art looks like weird KH adol cosplayer

I looooooved Ys VIII but just couldn't get into Ys IX. From how it looks, I'll definitely be giving Ys X a chance.

Also, how funny is the title "Ys X".

XSeed doesn't block ports, they just don't deal with other licensees (so they won't bring over Clouded Leopard Entertainment versions of games). Since this is being ported by Falcom I think XSeed will localize it.
I wouldn't be so sure of that. I've heard accounts that XSEED told journalists to "ask NISA" when inquired about Ys Memoire

I only played 8 and it was pretty fun, looking forward to this one. Meanwhile I have 9 on my backlog and I might grab Origin someday

Just started Ys 9 and I'm not really noticing the issues people are talking about. Maybe it's because I haven't played the PS4 version?
TBH my issues weren’t with performance, they were more with other areas of the game. I found the city to be bloated with icons and collectibles, and the sense of exploration dulled by constant grey corridors, gear-gated areas with literal invisible magic walls over them and simplistic outdoors areas. Instead you get dozens of shops and rooftops and cafes and NPCs with their mundane lives. VIII had its own issues but feels really refreshing and enticing in terms of exploration, it just felt like a perfect fit for Adol.

The yassification of Adol. 😃

Honestly though, I'm digging the bed head design. Probably from tumbling around in bed from whenever his ship inevitable got wrecked. 😂
