Discussion The first official "Sonic The Hedgehog is a Great Franchise" thread

I've heard great things about Sonic Frontiers, some people has labeled the game as the factual Sonic Adventure 3.

It is good? I bought since release but still sealed, want to know if I should start giving it some quality time before Dead Space.

Yes. From someone who calls it essentially Sonic Adventure 3. It's a bit wonky but it's good and better than the sun of its parts. If you already have it it's definitely worth digging in.

I took this photo this morning because I am an artist:

Someone put Classic Sonic into Adventure and I... might prefer it..??

Edit: Also the part at 7:26 is what I'm talking about when I say I miss the old style homing attack

So going through collecting medals and trying to Plat Sonic Unleashed.

I know it's a meme, but that battle theme for werehog is amazing, just over played. Such a good jazz track

Finally playing Sonic 1 for the first time as my senpai-tachi @chocolate_supra and @VolcanicDynamo instructed. I think I'm in the last Act of Labyrinth Zone. I started the game about a week ago. I'm a little motion sensitive with certain things so I wasn't sure how I'd get on with the Gotta Go Fast parts but I kept in mind the advice I read on here that the games are designed to play as platformers without moving super fast for the most part till you learn the layouts. So playing it mostly as I'd play a regular platformer, I'm enjoying it pretty well. It's getting more engaging as it's going on and for a game from the early 90s it holds up well. I didn't love the look of it in docked mode but it looks amazing in handheld (playing on OG Switch). The level design and mechanics have been increasingly engaging and the design is super charming. It's really fascinating to me that Sonic and Crash felt so edgy in the 90s when I was a kid and smack dab in that 90s pop culture world and yet now they feel so charming to me.

Oh, yeah, and with the 3DS eShop closing, I saw Sonic Game Gear and Tails Adventure are worthwhile and they're cheap so I grabbed them. Is Sonic 2 for Game Gear also good?

omg if you're engaging this well with Sonic 1 I can't wait to see how you get on with 2 and 3. 😁

Also Sonic 2 for Game Gear is kinda neat in my opinion, because I had it growing up and there's some nostalgia for me there. It's definitely a product of its hardware though so don't go in expecting the quality of the Genesis games but it is cute in its own way and has some neat level themes. It's tough as hell to get to the true ending though so I hope whatever version you're getting has save states. 😅

Since Frontiers will be getting additional playable characters in DLC, I feel like Frontiers' gameplay formula will fit Tails and Knuckles' aerial abilities than any Sonic gameplay ever has. Yes, even the 2D games.

It depends.

With the (especially classic) 2D games, the level design played to the duo's individual abilities. Whereas Sonic had to work harder to get to the higher, more rewarding routes of acts, Tails (and Knuckles) had a far easier time doing so, at the price of losing the tools for going through stages faster. And then Knuckles sometimes had exclusive routes on top of that.

"Open Zone" means that we'll likely see a similar dynamic of Tails and Knuckles having an easier time exploring and accomplishing tasks than Sonic would, but the very nature of the "openness" means we might not see the same type of specialization 2D level design would foster either.

I'm interested in seeing what they do, either way!

Call me a boomer but I really wish Sonic looked like this in the games:

I wish Sonic looked like this and the world itself was equally cartoonish and expressive.

I hope Sega will give us something super stylised one day. Their obsession with putting Sonic in our world, or in one that looks similar, baffles me.

I don’t hate it, but embrace the fact that Sonic is a talking hedgehog who can run at light speed.

See that's the thing: Tails and Knux's abilities are meant for exploration, not fluid, skillful movement. As much as I love S3&K, still thinking it's king among the 2D Sonic games, its efforts to design for "balance" between the three means that Sonic has a lot more slow, winding moments than usual. And in hindsight, perhaps giving Tails and Knux the Spin Dash was a mistake too since that means they can barrel through at high speeds themselves when that's supposed to be Sonic's thing.

Now that Frontiers is actively built around using Sonic's speed to explore (as opposed to exploration being supplementary at most), flight and gliding will fit in it much more naturally.

Just beat Sonic 2's final boss for the first time without cheats or save states. That was cathartic. It's actually not terribly bad when you realize it's just a risk/reward ratio - the trick is to frontload the riskiest hits on Eggman's mech (when he's walking), and then let him do his "slam down and swing belly" move because that nets you multiple safe hits. Then at the end just let him walk and only hit him when he swings the belly. Basically at least half of your hits should be during the belly swing.

Anyway, Sonic 2 is still one of my all time favorite games. One of the best Sonic games and best 2D platformers for sure. Although you can feel the Christmas crunch towards the end, there's a lot to love, and it's one of the biggest jumps in quality from its predecessor that I've ever seen.

Will probably take a break and then tackle the GOAT 3K in Origins soon enough.

Sonic Heroes was actually the best selling 3D Sonic game this whole time?
Coming off the success and reception of the Adventure series, and being the first multiplat Sonic, that makes sense. Then the very next game was 06 which torched the series' credibility and goodwill, so it doesn't surprise me that they never saw the same success again (outside of Mania).

Okay, I beat Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis) for the first time! I knew I'd tried a 2D console Sonic at some point in my life, but my only real experience with the series has been Sonic Advance and that must be 20ish years ago at this point. I'm playing in handheld through the Origins collection.

Overall, I enjoyed it pretty well. I didn't love it but I mostly liked it. I'm sure without infinite levels I wouldn't have stuck with it through to the end. There were some creative set pieces and the music, presentation and animation were top notch.

I'd thought the next game in the Story Mode would be Sonic 2, which I was really looking forward to as I've seen many posts like Mekanos's above that praise it as a huge leap up. So I was really surprised when the Story Mode sent me to Sonic CD next. I tried a few minutes but the graphics and camera really bothered my eyes. They looked kinda blurry to me with foreground and background mushed together, much like a mid-90s PC game. Also, the way the camera angles for the loop-de-loops seemed like it may be too nauseating for me (motion/camera sensitivity).

So, do Sonic 2 and 3 look more like Sonic or more like Sonic CD? I'm hoping it's the former because I want to be able to play 2 and 3/K.

Is it okay if I skip CD?

And if I leave story mode, and just play the games a la carte, do I still get unlimited lives?

Sonic 2 and 3 are more like 1, definitely. Sonic CD was sort of an outlier as Sonic Team kinda split in two after the first game and one half moved to America while one team stayed in Japan. Sonic CD was what the Japanese team developed and that's part of why is has such a different look and flavor. Sonic 2 and 3 are what Yuji Naka's group developed with the American team and they're not near as visually wild. Nor do they have any awkward time-travel gameplay. 😅

As far as the lives, if you play in "Anniversary Mode" you get all the modern perks including unlimited lives, even if playing the games individually. Only thing is you won't get the little animated cutscenes tying them together (but those are barely anything, really, just cute little thingies). So if CD is messing with you, feel free to just go right to Sonic 2.

Absolutely losing my mind playing Dying Light and hearing Roger as the main character

It doesn't help that the game is first person so my brain is just saying "first person sonic"

Speaking of Sonic voice actors, I started watching Romantic Killer on Netflix. It's an anime parody of the romcoms that is consistently amusing and has a wholesome center which makes it very easy viewing.

Jason Griffith voices one of the main romantic leads. The performance in general is more reserved and deeper than you'd usually hear from Jason - but every now and then you catch a little bit of that old Sonic pitch.

Question for our resident Sonic expert @chocolate_supra : Do you think I have to restart 3D Blast in order to get to the special stages in the first two levels that I missed? Like are there more special stages than there are emeralds to collect, is the question.

Thanks so much for all this info! I'll jump right to 2, then!

Oh dang, uh.. okay the kicker is I forget if Tails and Knuckles are both in each Act or if only one of them appears in each. If Tails and Knuckles are both in each Act, you should have plenty of chances yet as there are 14 Acts in all (though I think the last one or two doesn't have special stages) for a grand total of 28 chances. If there is only one of them per Act, that's still 14 (or 12 maybe, depending on the last Zone) chances, to get seven emeralds. So you might still be okay.

I'm googling like mad and I can't find anything saying how many chances there are to find Tails and Knuckles ffs 😅

CD has some cool things about it but it lacks the main level designer of the Genesis trilogy and it shows. Maybe go back to it later but you’ll be happy jumping straight to 2.

lol i was googling too and couldn't find that info either. i think i'll just take my chances and push on, and worst comes to worst, i'll watch the final boss fight on youtube lol

I still prefer the first sonic game over all other ones. The first is fast but feels more like a platform game while the other ones are more racing based games imo.

So many reasons for that one. But yeah. Sonic was pretty much on top of the world still when Heroes came out. It's amazing how much this franchise climbed out of the gutter to approach that one again.

I hadn't thought about Sonic Heroes in quite a while, but it being the best selling (3D?) Sonic game makes sense. Hype was pretty big back then especially for me because it followed the classic Sonic Zone Act 1 -> optional special stage -> Zone Act 2 -> optional special stage -> boss but in 3D.

Frontiers definitely deserves the sales on par, if not better than Heroes because it is an awesome, but flawed game!

How did you like the Master System/Game Gear versions of Sonic and Sonic 2? I think I read those are even more platforming-focused.

Which reminds me, the amazing RetroXP had an intriguing article about Sonic Triple Trouble, which led me to pick it up before the eShop closure:

Even though I said I dropped it, I changed my mind. I'm going for the platinum in Unleashed. Wish me luck. All medals done just need the damn hot dog levels.
