News Elon Musk and the End of Twitter

I meant, the sum of all the parts since this started, getting progressively more hilarious as new things happen.
Ah okay. I was hoping there was some new hilarity I could rubberneck over 😅

Elon's getting desperate, guess we're now fully in the endgame of burning down the site to try and extract what money he can from it. Lot of bots/apps will probably just cease to function rather than pay for basic API access.

The limit seems to have been a malfunction (or it was a bad idea and they walked it back, who knows ever) as a result of them killing off current TweetDeck. So just another wild moment of shooting themselves in the foot twice with one bullet.

Elon trying to extract as much as possible before Twitter inevitably crashes and he has no use for it anymore lmao.

Cheers :d

The man is a complete idiot. Doesn't understand at all that the power users are what provide value to the service, and not the other way around.

In any just world, he'd be paying them, but you know capitalism

How exactly is this still a thing. When's the tipping point, and what is it gonna be?

There's no tipping point. We've seen this happen several times. There won't be an event that just destroys twitter, people will just slowly trickle out, find a different platform, and one day we'd get some headlines like "What happened to Twitter???", which will have a couple users left and be very different from today.

That assuming Elongated Muskrat bails out and someone else tries to salvage it, anyway. He might just stay there losing money until he can't keep it online.

Yeah I agree, I think there probably isn't going to be a Single tipping point for the same reasons all of the choices since the buyout have made a lot of people unhappy - there's a ton of different ways to use Twitter, and not every change is going to affect everyone the same way, short of the site straight-up going down.

For some people, the changes have made Twitter completely unusable, and for others there's been no noticeable difference outside the couple outages. So combine that with the other available platforms not covering all use cases, and all you get is trickles in various directions but nothing big. I've mostly moved my personal posting to other sites, but I'm still waiting for a decent option to properly migrate my art account because all the alternatives come with at best a loss of 99% of my audience combined with large caveats on top of that. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of creators are being held back in similar ways.

The advertisers bailing is something I noticed almost immediately with the quality/type of ads I've been seeing, but the majority of the ads I've been getting on twitter for a while now have been recruitment ads for the US Marine Corps. So..
  • change moderation rules to draw bigots and extremists back onto the platform
  • silence or expell dissenting voices from the platform
  • begin running a military recruitment campaign on the platform
This is gonna end great, ain't it? 😅

Honestly at this point Facebook/Insta suddenly seem like very competent platforms compared to this shitshow. Zuckerberg probably glad that no one pays attention to him at the moment. I‘m sure Meta is doing something super evil in the meantime.

That is super pathetic. Will have to update before the time comes because we all know it’ll be broken on roll out day.

Given that SMS is the least secure form of 2FA, this sounds stupid.

Then I'm reminded that Muskrat simps probably aren't as technologically literate as they pretend to be in front of Tunnel Daddy and they might think it's the best because they get to pay for this.

Some friends were already unable to deactivate two factor authentication because of course why not. Got mine settled for whatever it is worth. I barely tweet at all these days.

There’s a big pop up window saying you won’t be able to log onto Twitter if you have it enabled. Everyone is screencapping it and no one is happy.

Yeah, it’s hilarious that you have to pay money to use a less secure form of 2FA.

eh whatever, I barely use twit anyways. I only still have mine to keep up to date on news of certain things. Elon Moron can't accelerate twitter's doom soon enough. Hurry up.

I wish there was a viable alternative to Twitter. I’ve been using Mastodon but it’s mostly super niche tech folks on there. It still needs more adoption on the platform to replace Twitter for what I used it for. I mainly used it as a RSS feed type thing to follow news. I paid for the Tapbots app for Mastodon on iOS since I loved TweetBot and felt bad for those developers, but Mastodon seems empty.

But when will he unban everyone he banned for disagreeing with him and for reporting on his shady business dealings and for literally just being leftwing journalists doing journalism and and and...
