Upon learning that there is GCN controller support I have decided to eventually put my GCN version towards getting this instead, it's outright objectively superior. I'm expecting y'alls gratitude, Nintendo put this out to spite me specifically

It just shows me they have no faith in the Metroid franchise. NCL anyway.
Every report says that the original intent was to do all of Trilogy this way. Considering the backlash that would have erupted had they priced just this game at $60, I think they made the right call. Looking at this and Zelda, I'm wondering if this is Nintendo dipping their toe in more tiered pricing schemes.

I wish this had been given the treatment that Dread had been given - the trailer is nice, and the shadow drop is great fun, but it feels like this could have been more of an event. We know we're getting Prime 4, and we got Dread, so it's not like the franchise is dying, but I would have loved if this had been not randomly stuck in the leadup to Zelda. That said, i never played the Prime games (just couch "co-op" where you yell over your best friend's shoulder while they play) so this is a treat for me.

First impressions:

  • God, this is gorgeous
  • OH MY GOD I HATE THIS HUD
  • Oh, I can turn the helmet off
  • Oh I can turn gyro on
  • GOD I HATE THIS HUD
  • Oh I can turn the HUD off
  • ... but I can't see the mini map. In a Metroid game
  • What about hud at like two notches of visibility?
  • No that's worse
  • Oh god this game is pretty

Yeah it was weird sticking this in a Direct headline, and I already think headlines kind of 'spoil' what they're about to reveal since it's just a standard title card before the actual reveal.

Like everytime the Direct faded to black I was expecting Prime. And then it shows up randomly near the end and my heart starts fluttering. Like what the hell

Additional impressions:
  • The cut scene smash cut is annoying. Having played through dread where we smoothly moved from 3D gameplay to cut scenes, this is not fun
  • I actually wish there was half a second of loading time on these, just to ease me into losing control of the camera
  • God this game is pretty

I need to see Samus's face in this remastered version.

Its clear this is a passion project and nintendo isnt worried about its sales lol, otherwise they would never have announced it and released like that.

Price? Xenoblade sold for more and xenoblade sells 1/3 of what 2d metroid sells, its not about price.

Watching some comparisons and it looks good, but I’ll be honest and say some of the lighting in the original looks better. I’m still going to play it and see the whole thing for myself, just got my preorder in for the physical, but it gives off a bit of ‘hire this man’ energy.

Trust the process.

I'll be getting the physical, so have fun everyone! I'll be catching up soon. Have no idea how I'll fit this and Kirby in, but I'll try!

How do the pointer controls hold up? I know they added an easier difficulty to the Trilogy version, is that still present here?

Remaster my ass

It’s a freaking remake.

People need to correct the name of this. It’s freaking metroid HD game. The 1st ever. It’s absurdly beautiful.

I completely lost it when this came up, in a fucking headline of all things lmao. I debated waiting for the physical version but I broke down and grabbed it already (and honestly, seeing several people here saying they'll double-dip makes me feel a little better about doing so myself, haha).

It's absolutely gorgeous, I'm so happy.

Played for two hours tonight and I’m so impressed. Visually it’s gorgeous. Dual stick controls work very well. And the game is a blast to play (well except for those “hunt for the symbols to open a door” segments, those suck). I‘ve played up to the Varia suit so far. This is the first time I’m playing Prime in nearly twenty years, and the first time playing it after playing all the 2D games. Now that I’m familiar with the Metroid formula, I can see that somehow they took 2D Metroid and just… made it 3D.

Normally I would wait to buy this physically but I anticipate that I may have a rough couple days at work and it will be nice to have this game to come home to.

I watched a video and it's weird. In the beginning cutscene the lighting is better in the original. But in game, the switch version is better. The front of samus looks better in the original but the back of her looks better on the switch. The colors are more consistent.

Even after playing it countless times over the last 20 years, Metroid Prime still has this way of hooking me more than most games do. There's something truly addictive about it for me, where I go "I'll just get to this area then I'll take a break" but then I can't help myself from playing an additional hour after where I said I would stop.

The temptation to double dip is so strong. I want this now but I also need the physical which i need to wait until March 3rd

#4 of the Canada eshop already. i think it will do well.

Update is now #1

Wasn’t surprised to see it, but very surprised it was a shadow drop and it looks so much better than I expected! I’m holding off for the physical version and looking forward to playing then :)

In what sense? It's a total remake, and it has Trilogy pointer controls (optionally)

There are slight differences between Prime on Trilogy and Prime in its original release. Mainly with lore, glitches, etc. Nothing big though

If anyone else is trying to get roughly close to the old Wiimote controls, I found maxing out camera sensitivity and putting aim sensitivity a bit below 50 worked best for me. The max camera sensitivity is important because the more you have to turn the Joycon, the more likely it is for the gyro to need recentering. Like with Galaxy in 3DAS, you do just kind of have to get used to it, but the sensitivity tweaks make it pretty decent, whereas with default sensitivity I'm pretty sure every time you look anywhere you'd need to recenter.

Already ordered the physical version.

EDIT: I lied, it isn't up for preorder in Spain apparently.

Surely I will be able to wait until 3/3 and pretend like the digital shadow drop never happened, right?

It has been years, whats a couple more weeks…

Legit been fighting the urge to buy it immediately at this moment since the reveal last night.

UK retailers don't seem to have any listings yet...
