Discussion whats the last band/artist you really got into

King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, Peter Gabriel era Genesis, and Hawkwind are the bands I've gotten super into recently. If you want to get into them I'd recommend the respective albums
- I Am In Your Mind Fuzz
-Foxtrot
-Warrior on the Edge of Time

Maybe Thin Lizzy? My music listening has been pretty insular the past few years and I haven't really strayed too much outside of my existing library of artists (which isn't a very small library which is part of the reason I'm fine with that for now). Thin Lizzy's one of those artists where I had a handful of songs on some of my playlists but I never got very into them. I haven't listened to hard rock a whole lot since I was like 18 probably. I opened up the deluxe version of Jailbreak on Spotify randomly one day and listened to the remixes and BBC session versions of the songs on that and was shocked at just how good they sounded. Sounded so much better than the album versions I was familiar with, which always sounded a bit muted to me with the mixing. Even "The Boys Are Back In Town", a completely whatever song I've heard a million times and never much cared for, sounded like a whole new song to me. Eventually got me listening to more of their albums and I've probably listened to them more since that random encounter with Jailbreak than I ever had before.

John Frusciante, Shadows Collide with People has become my favourite album alongside Appetite for Destruction. I really like all of his albums but his 2004 output and 2009's The Empyrean are probably my favourites. To Record Only Water for Ten Days is great too.

I think Shadows Collide with People is a great album to start with if you want to give him a chance.

I have been in love with Dream Theater since really diving into their discography as of about, I’d say 5 years ago.

I’ve seen them live a couple times since, and they’re just otherworldly to see them perform in front of you (especially considering they played Metropolis Part 2 front to back both times) - but it’s their second album that really made me go “Wow” and realize that, their music at times stops feeling like a song and feels more like an actual journey. This song in particular hits all the sweet spots for me:

Ehh... I guess Tame Impala or Mac Demarco but that was a decade ago. They were the last artists where I bought records and went to a show anyway.

Death's Dynamic Shroud kinda snuck up on me despite generally not being able to get too deep into their genre. I'll Try Living Like This had some hooks in me, but Faith in Persona was really a big hit that got me to dig into their kinda wild discography.

I'm still quite new to Spotify, and I've got a lot of recommends that have intrigued me, so I'm diving into them all at once.
I've made a playlist called "hmm", that includes Man Without Country, MODERNS, Wayfloe and Particle House. Good stuff.

Protest the Hero, a prog-rock band that sings about historical events and figures. They did a pretty cool, critical song about Mt Rushmore and its legacy in regards to Native Americans.

Ooh, that's a blast from the past for me. Fortress is a killer album!

Man, I almost got to see them live! It was with Silverstein, Devil Wears Prada and A Day to Remember.

Protest The Hero was set to be there, but I forgot what happened - but they pulled out. I was sad but, hey, Pierce The Veil replaced their slot and were touring on the cuff of their debut album so that was tons of fun!

One of my favorite albums of 2022 came from a band I found out about like in December. Sounds like a band who spent 6 weeks in the studio and just had fun.

Like a band that I only recently discovered but like most of their material?

I think that would be Pup. I find it difficult lately to find something recently released, and then go back and like their older material
(Wage War, Electric Callboy, AVOID) doesn't mean I don't, Bad Omens I prefer their older stuff, but only found our about em last year.

Probably Matt Heckler and Lost Dog Street Band

And Billy Strings

Pup is fun. I saw them in Louisville last year, they put on a good show.

The last band that I really got into was Modest Mouse. Ever since Float On got big, I always had a sense that I could really like this band, and I knew I needed to just dive in. And once I did, I was hooked. MM is so incredibly amazing. I like their older stuff better than the new stuff, but I would say We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank is my favorite MM record.

Oh my god PtH is so good. I’m not a typical PtH fan that thinks everything after Fortress and Volition isn’t as good. In fact, Pacific Myth and Palimpsest are my favorite records by them. From the Sky is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. I’d love to see them live sometime.

It's funny you say that, I only got into them recently and listened to a bunch of random songs from all the albums, enjoying most of them. Then I would see in the comments "they fell off" "the new records suck" and I would be so confused 😅

You know, I want to say maybe Carly Rae Jepsen in the summer of 2019, but at the same time I also think I'm drawing a blank on any artists I've really discovered since then that I've been absolutely obsessed with since right at the start. Bleachers and The Weeknd I've known for years by that point and probably didn't fully delve into their entire back discography until 2021 and 2022 respectively.

I met them in line for The Beast at King’s Island when I was probably 12-13 years old. They were playing a show that evening at the park’s amphitheater.

I still have a Polaroid at my mom’s house of a chubby me with a bowl cut standing between Isaac and Jeremiah (RIP).

Used to be a huge Modest Mouse fan in high school. Lonesome Crowded West and Moon and Antarctica are pretty perfect indie rock records.

To me this is the sound of senior year of high school.
Freshman/sophmore for me I think. It was my older brother who was really into them, he was a senior while I was a freshman and he would play music like this from his iPod (remember those?) driving us to school. Then I got his hand-me-down iPod and listened to it a lot.

I think of any medium, music invokes the strongest sense of nostalgia, and I'm not sure it's close. I can listen to a song and instantly recall feelings and sensations from decades ago. Now just listening to this in bed with my cat at 2 in the morning, it really invokes something indescribable in me.

Maybe someday everything will all fall into place, Modest Mouse. Maybe someday!

holy smokes yes. Shadows is incredible. If you ask my favorite album, most days it’s Shadows Collide with People.

BRB, driving to eat a carvel cake.

Brandi Carlile / In These Silent Days. I had enjoyed her music before that but never sought it out. Seeing her perform Broken Horses on SNL really blew me away. Amazing voice and I really got into that album.

Also check out her cover of Black Hole Sun.

You said artist, so here; Simon Hanselmann. I dabble and dip in and out so I very rarely focus on one artist, so for me to come up with the answer right away, yup, that good.

He wrote Crisis Zone. That's basically all you need to know. If you missed out reading it as it was written in 2020, sucks to be you. Idgaff (I don't give a flying fuck) if it's non cannon. Fucking comic/graphic novel ride of a lifetime. When I think of pandemic art that actually was something it's this.

For a band, Ghost I guess.

Such an amazing album. Prefer this style of the band over the Johnny Marr years and what’s seems to be that guitar sound even after his exit. I was also really into Built to Spill around this time, who might be my favorite indie rock band ever.

Ok, I've got a few more; God Hates Us All (Slayer, 2001) and I'm starting to groove to some Pig Destroyer and Baroness. I'm late. IDGAFF.

On God Hates Us All. What statement. I've had the album since like 2005, I think. It's never left whatever vehicle I was driving. Its one of greatest Slayer albums, hands down. Nothing they've made since even sniffs it. I've bounced off World Painted Blood, happily ignored Repentless and listening to Christ Illusion is just to touch base with whatever Jeff Hanneman wrote for the album. If you haven't listened to it in a while, do so. Its far more brutal then you remember, even if it could lose a couple of tracks (Warzone.....) Even the lyrics and rage holds up two decades later, two decades full of war, hate, the opioid crisis and just the sheer relentlessness of it all. Plus Paul Bostaph is good, actually. One of the great talents of the genre, despite whatever people parrot on reddit. In short, its a rare album for me that held up from my younger years, as I moved far afield from the "Big (SUPER OVERRATED AND HELLA DATED) 4" of thrash metal bands of my teens (mids 2000s so you can carbon date me). (Also, metallica doesn't hold up at all to me, with maybe only Master of Puppets still holding some water for me all these years later and they're free to stop releasing new music whatever and just go on as a legacy act and play live. St Anger is the last album they cared about and at least that was something, even if it didn't work out)

Pig Destroyer and Baroness are growing on me more and more. I'll need a few more listens but they scratch two very different itches for me, itches that need a good scratch at the moment.

The last band I REALLY got into, as in with the intensity that did I when I was in high school and university, was probably Radiohead around when A Moon Shaped Pool came out in 2016. Despite being a huge music nerd from around 14 on, Radiohead passed me by for whatever reason but my god, did they ever hit me hard once I finally got around to them. Kid A, In Rainbows, Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief are easily some of my favorite albums of all the time and I'm a huge fan of Thom's solo albums and side projects like The Smile and Atoms for Piece.

Since then, I haven't really had the experience of discovering an older artist and just diving into their back catalogue and side projects. There are a lot of new artists I love though and I would say they constitute the bulk of my music taste. Most notable would be black midi (Hellfire is probably my favorite album in years), Magdalena Bay, death's dynamic shroud, Black Country New Road, US Girls, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, JPEGmafia and Tyler the Creator fell on my radar in a big way with Flower Boy back in 2017. I've also started getting re-acquainted with metal and hardcore for the first time since like 2009 and been enjoying bands that I had never heard of before like Venom Prison, Hath, Krallice, Wormrot, Cult of Luna, Chat Pile and Callous Dao Boys.

Totally agree, did you listen to Ataxia , theProject with Josh Klinghoffer? Also great.
I wish he’d record more guitar based solo album instead of RHCP dross.

Silver Jews.

I am a huge Pavement fan and I had been meaning to check the Silver Jews out for a while, but I kept getting sidetracked by other bands and discographies. Unsurprisingly, given my love for Pavement, David Berman's work really did it for me.

It's a shame he had to leave us so soon. But he gave us some amazing music while he was around.

Maybe Beach Bunny? Most artists I've gotten into recently have very small discographies, so there's only so far one can really get into them.
