Discussion What Nintendo Switch first party game is worth more than $70 to you?

Yamanoi

I paid $70 for this tag

There is a lot of discussion about game pricing going up, overcharging, etc. I wanted to know what you consider worth more than $70 (the current AAA price point for "current gen"). For me, the answer is multiple games* - Xenoblade (all 3), Fire Emblem Three Houses, Fire Emblem Warriors, Famicom Detective Club (bundle).

*but I also consider many first party games as not worth $60 despite paying that much like: Mario Golf, Mario Party Superstars, Kirby Star Allies.

Edit: This is not a thread to discuss price increases or reduction to be clear. Just want to know what you value more than the current "high price".

I'm assuming we're talking mostly about first party games on Switch here.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is a steal even at $115 (which is the price of the base game plus both Fighter Passes) in my opinion. The music selection alone is stacked. It's also become one of my favorite fighting games of all time, when no other Smash had managed to break into my top 10 or even 20.

Also obvious answers: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey. Absolutely top tier games.

Also I did pay more than 70$ for Ring Fit Adventure and it was worth every penny.

I will maintain the party line of "no game is worth $70 to me" for as long as I have to, so as of right now, nothing.

If/when the time comes that I have to reassess that position, I'll revisit the question.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons. I've amassed hundreds of hours played.
Yes!
I'd pay $120 for smash, 3D Mario and Zelda. Nothing else is worth more then $70.
I completely forgot about Smash! Definitely worth a lot more than I paid. :)

Yes first party on Switch. Sorry I will edit the OP to be clear.

Splatoon 3 has been worth $200 based on how much I've played it

I think at $70 I'll have to start carefully considering what games I actually like. In addition to Splatoon, for me it'd be Pikmin, Kirby, Animal Crossing if it's ever in the old style again, weirdo EPD 4 shit, and any other new IP that grabs me. If a 3D Mario looks really interesting I'd definitely consider it.

To answer the thread's question more directly, I'd have eagerly paid $70 for the following games:
  • Splatoon 2
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Ring Fit Adventure (in fact, I think I did)
  • Clubhouse Games (it's 51 games, Jerry!)
  • Pikmin 3 Deluxe
  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
  • Miitopia
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land
  • Splatoon 3
edit: ehh and fuck it Mario Kart 8 Deluxe right after launch would've been worth it too

Any of their top tier games will be worth $70 , i mean the quality is very high for Nintendo 1st party specifically
I think $60 will just be the new 'mid-tier' pricing, like the current $50. And $50 will still exist as well.

In anycase, this isn't pro consumer, but necessary to retain 3rd party support and for Nintendo to not shoot itself in the foot for forgoing extra money.

Also I almost always buy the season pass for Nintendo games, which almost always puts the price above $70 anyway.

None. The only Switch games I played day 1 at full price were Smash (not worth it anymore for me due to terrible online, rage still being here and not going to tournaments anymore) and NEO TWEWY. The latter was technically worth it but even then, it’s just a bad precedent to say that you don’t mind paying premium price for a game, they are already expensive enough. You already can have total steals when playing indies or retro games so there’s no point saying that “it was actually worth more than full price”, like there’s so many different other ways to praise a game

TOTK will probably have a season pass. I guess I could buy it day 1 and get the preorder bonus since now that I’m an adult with a job I don’t mind that the price is technically worth 5 hidden gems on sale, I make that money by going in the bathroom. However, when you think about it critically there is no reason to buy the season pass in advance after how disappointng the BOTW DLC was. The point here is that even though all in all, even though Zelda is a quality series, one of the rare ones that I’m down to buy day 1 at full price, it still didn’t really add any value by going above that with DLC. Therefore, even if you really like the base game, no need to say something like “it’s worth more than full price” when the DLC doesn’t really add value despite the additional cost

The original Hyrule warriors, all the adventure maps added a ton of hours. With all the content that would be like 3 KT musou games

I think the idea that no games are worth $70 is ridiculous. Game prices should be way higher than they are accounting to 1. inflation in general and 2. how much longer they take to make/how much more expensive they are to make. It is an absolute miracle they are still at $60 and only just now have started to go to $70. There's a reason MTX exist. It isn't just pure greed. It's also that games are so complex now they're working on them for 3, 4, 5 years. Maybe longer. If you have a stinker, you just lost tens of millions of dollars if your game is a one-time purchase.

I'm sorry--today, I do not understand how good games aren't worth $70. We paid $40-$50 when I was a kid 25 years ago. Adjusted for inflation, those games are more expensive now and were not nearly as complex, time-consuming, or resource intensive. Back then, games were super long when they hit 20 hours, now people get angry when these [much more complex] games don't reach 20 hours. I think $70 is more than fair today.

Considering execs are getting richer and richer, I'd say 60 bucks or even less is fine, if it's enough for them to amass millions and not pay workers.

Across Wii U and Switch I paid at least £70 for Mario Kart 8, and I don't regret it. Haven't played it a ton on Switch though.

That ain't it, chief.

EDIT: I've paid over 70€ for a few special editions (Metroid: Dread, Bayo 3) so I guess Metroid Dread is a game that I'd pay a ton of money for but not much else. Zelda, I guess, since it'll release at 70€

a new Xenoblade or Fire Emblem game would probably have to hit over a hundred before I started seriously considering not bothering

probably even more than that for Xenoblade just because of how ridiculously long those games are

I would probably never pay €80 for games, even if I think games like Smash and Zelda are worth it.

I can't afford that, or I'd have to play only a handful of games per generation.

Most likely scenario is that I'd stop playing video games if they got to that price.

As always, sure... if my wages increased proportionally with inflation.

Anyways, as others said, gaming executives are making money hand over fist. I am not! They can take my $60 and fuck off.

Mario Odyssey
Zelda BotW
Metroid Dread

I would’ve paid $100+ for those three games

I bought two copies of Xenoblade, one of which was the LE, and the Expansion Pass. Worth every penny to me.

Everyone complaining that games cost too much money should start playing indie games. Most of my favorite Switch games have cost less than $20 USD

Xenoblade (even though I don't like Xenoblade 3) and Zelda BotW (I hope TotK is worth as much as those).

I would pay €100 (or even more) for Xenoblade X on the Switch.

I think the spirit of the thread isn't that we're letting ourselves get suckered into spending more money, just that which games had a lot of bang for the buck. I'm definitely not advocating for games to become more expensive.

Of the games I’ve played? Animal Crossing by a landslide. I think I have over 400+ hours logged into just my file, and I have been helping my daughter make her island for a little over a month now.

I would gladly pay over 70 bucks for a Mario Odyssey 2 though. 🤣 I’m still sad we never got more areas via DLC by now.

Considering I've bought all of these paid expansions, I can say for sure the following were worth more then $70 for me

Fire Emblem Three Houses
Fire Emblem Engage
Zelda BotW
Xenoblade 2
Xenoblade 3
Splatoon 2
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Animal Crossing New Horizons*
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe*

*technically I got these as part of NSO+EP, but I would have bought them otherwise

Though I agree with the general hold the line sentiment of "don't buy games for $70"

120€ for Smash with all DLC
50€ each for Bayonetta 3 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 with e-shop coupons
40€ on sale for the rest

Hope i can use coupons for TotK as well.

I see the value proposition differently to a lot of others. I live on a remote island where everything has to be imported with duty rates of 42% which are passed on to the customer (plus shipping), so games seem ridiculously cheap by comparison to everything else.

Especially after the insane inflation of the past two years. A 12-pack of coke is $12 (USD), three chicken breasts are $25, a dozen eggs (lol) are $11 - almost a US dollar per egg. As a single guy, I'm spending over $1000 on groceries a month. And then there's games on the Nintendo digital storefront, still sitting there at $60, like they have for a decade or more. Feels like absurd value. I'm like "okay buying this is about two days of food".

So given that situation I'd be willing to pay more than $60 for a ton of games. But more than $70? The ones that come to mind are Zelda, 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Metroid Prime games and Ring Fit. I'd pay $80 for all of those.

And I think we WILL be paying $80 for games before too long.

The real budget that matters? Time.

I almost view games as a lottery. A lot I don't end up playing much and so have little value, but those that I really latch onto and put in the big hours take up that value. So in another world instead of paying $60 for BOTW and $60 for Origami King, I'd have been happy with $100 for BOTW and $20 for Origami King. Xenoblades, BOTW, Animal Crossing, Smash, easy to see their value at $70+.

Odyssey. Mario Odyssey to me is the quintessential 3D Mario game and the best game on Switch.

I would say Animal Crossing and Smash but I did spend over $60 on them already because of dlc haha.

I don’t even see most Nintendo games worth it at full price. So $70 is a no go.

The ones I already paid more than $70 for because of DLC e,g. BotW, Xeno 2/3

Intrinsic worth, or relative worth?

I think I played Breath of the Wild for about 300 hours. At $60, that's about $0.20 per hour of entertainment, the first ~70 of which were among the most enraptured I've been with a game for decades.

Ignoring relative market value, if I had to quantify what I would have been willing to pay for that level of sustained entertainment in a vacuum, I'd say probably up to $300, or a dollar per hour.

I frequently pay around $60 for single meal. An experience I get once every 5-6 years that entertains me for months is worth substantially more.

As for what I would pay when taking into account a market of games that offer similar levels of entertainment for $60 or $70? I'd probably put a $30 premium on BotW, so I would have been willing to pay about $100.

(Which, now that I think about it, between the expansion pass and an amiibo, is roughly what I did pay.)

My standard is Mario Odyssey, I paid $60 for 40 h of non stop fun gameplay, and I think that was a good balance between price and enjoyment out of something. My 200 h of BOTW means that under that standard that game was worth $300, ACNH was worth $360, and Splatoon 2 was worth $120.

Though that model breaks up when compared to a game like Pokemon Violet, I got almost 100 hours of that game but I would never say it's worth $150. But I will not say I feel ripped with its $60 pricetag either. I suppose it depends on how premium, fun, polished and revolutionary the game is.

I've paid the equivalent of $70 for Breath of the Wild and Monster Hunter Rise as well as close to that amount for Triangle Strategy and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. There are others I'd have been ready to shell out for but reserved as holiday and birthday gifts.

Of those the only one I felt dubious about was MK8D due to already owning the Wii U version, though technically that one was a freebie.
