Rumour Grain of Salt: Spanish Twitter user who leaked Metroid Dread in early 2021 hints at another 2D Metroid game by MercurySteam in 2025

I mean I wouldn't be surprised if there is another one by then, because Dread did so well.
I don't think this is indicative of it.

Dread performed well and was critically lauded.

A sequel by the same dev studio releasing four years later isn't a stretch.

I mean, it's not the biggest stretch to expect another 2D Metroid in the future. MercurySteam did a great job with Dread. It reviewed well, sold well, and generated a lot of buzz. Can't imagine it broke the bank to make either.

i think everyone expects another 2D metroid from mercurysteam after the success of dread, so this isn't very farfetched. 2025 seems like a reasonable time frame.

Yeah this wouldn’t be a big surprise, wonder if Nintendo will end up eventually purchasing Mercury Steam as they would be a neat addition to their studio line up and could focus on 2D Action/Adventure games.

Wouldn't that be a little too soon after Metroid Prime 4, assuming MP4 releases in 2024 as a cross-gen title with the Drake?
They are being developed by 2 different studios
Kinda hoped that their next game is Castlevania in the same 2,5D style as Mirror of Fate. If there's one studio to revive CV franchise, that's MercurySteam. I don't like Metroid universe at all...
Castlevania is Konami so they would need to get the greenlight from them.

That "insider" is not very reliable.

Regarding MS and Metroid, the previous game was leaked in a Spanish forum called "ElOtroLado", if someone really wants to check if there is a real leak, they would start there.

Not MS's fault that MP4 didn't come out when it was supposed to.

Hey it was a great game. Some neat ideas it had, like using whip as a swing. It might not be up there with Iga's DS greats but it sure was better than CV's any 3D attempt. Now that MS is more talented than ever before, they can top Mirror of Fate easily.

OK. Sure.

This is one of those things where it's a good enough educated guess to seem reasonable, but it's far enough away where if it doesn't happen or comes earlier/sooner he can just say that "plans changed."

Move along, people. Nothing to see here.

2025 is very far IMO. Hope if it is true, the studio credits everyone who worked on the game unlike what they did in Dread. Also hope they invest in some good music. This might come out before Metroid Prime 4 :)

2D Metroid from MercurySteam was one of the worst kept secrets from 2020-2021. It's very possible, but I wouldn't put any stock in this particular source or rumor, especially considering they announced their next game was not for Nintendo.

Sure maybe, but I could have told you that Mercury Steam was working on a 2D Metroid that would release in 2021 and I could also tell you that they're doing another one afterwards, both are very safe guesses.

ok this is even a smaller stretch than dread was. It was easy to expect a new 2d metroid game on the switch after SR, its now OBVIOUS to expect another one in the next few years lol.

Prime 1 and Fusion launched on the exact same day.
I mean, different consoles and all, would never happen nowadays. Still, one year difference is pretty darn good.

I like the idea of independent studios keep being...well, independent. Unless of course it's the studio itself that wants to be bought out, as was the case with Next Level Games. That said, Mercury sold 40% of its capital to Nordisk in December 2020, which seems like a bit of a missed opportunity to form a partnership with them.

True or false, seems like an easy thing to say. "There was one in 2017 and one in 2021... what about going forward that same amount again?"

I want Mercury Stream to evolve Metroid to a 3D/2D linear game, like a mix of Dread with some sections of Other M.

Or make a Fusion remake.

Or directly make a 3D Souls like game and let other studio to make a more pixel-art 2D game like Team Cherry.

But +4 years development cycle sound right for me.

Nintendo if wants can push Metroid to be an annual per FY IP like Mario or Zelda.

it's hard to envise any 2025 scenario when it comes to videogames, but since the critical and sales success of Dread a new Metroid is very likely sooner or later. the fact that the news come from Spain implies a Mercury Steam involvement maybe?

With how Mayor of a release Dread was (used to Advertise the OLED), to me it seems more like MS did became one of THOSE studios. (Grezzo, Good Feel, ...) where, while not exclusive or nintendo owned, most of the development time and resources go into Nintendo Funded strictly controlled projects.

i agree. I dont see nintendo actually buying them in the near future (things might change after an extensive relationship tho) but i def think MS will start doing more projects for ninty.

I want to say that I'm really excited, but that comes with some serious strings attached after how much Dread disappointed in a lot of ways

I can't imagine a better use of their time.

Dread is one of the best things Nintendo has done in years. If we get a sequel I'll be delighted.

It's actually not this case. A big chunk of the company was purchased by Nordisk after the Dread release. Their half owners sure has some other plans for them too but they're free to take up projects or anyone else. We haven't heard about their recent trademark: Raiders of the Lost Planet, which seems to be their side project.

I do as well but with how things are going these days with acquisitions you’d want them to still be able to make games for Nintendo.

I know that. I meant from a release standpoint. MP 4 in 2024 followed by Metroid 6 in 2025 may be to aggressive for an IP that is not one of Nintendo's heavy hitters.
maybe
maybe nintendo wants it to become that. Why invest so much in MP4? Hell we dont need even to mention that dread might be the largest 2d game of all time by number of people that worked on it.

such a crazed idea smh what i was thinking when i said that

True, but on 2 different systems. Not exactly the same situation. I guess we'll see. I can see the game being completed by 2025 and maybe Nintendo sits on it (like they were rumored to have done with Dread) until 2026 to give it and MP 4 some space.

Sakamoto did say that he is curious to what the players will expect for the next arc of Samus story.
And boi am I curious too !

Metroid Dread is the only leak he's gotten right. You don't have to be a genius to suggest that after the success of Dread, Nintendo decides to release a sequel as soon as possible.
-Another leak: in an interview MercurySteam said that they would dare to make the remake of Super Metroid.

Honestly more then a remake of Super or Fusion, what I want is Metroid 6. I want to know where the story goes now that Samus is MAJOR METROID DREAD SPOILERS The Last Metroid. I want to see what the next "story arc" is.

If I remember correctly, yes, there was some spanish folk that talked about both Samus Returns and Dread way, way back but... didn't that happen before 2020, and by some anon, I think back on the other site? What I'm trying to say it's that I'm not so sure this one is the folk that leaked both games (and, if so, this is just some random twitter account which, taking a look at its "leaks"... well... I'd not give it any credit whatsoever).

That said... yes, Dread was a comercial and critical success and a new one it's to be expected, and a development of ~4 years is what it took MS for Dread, so, yeah, I'd say it's a safe, safe bet to take for a random "Twitter leak account".
