Discussion The first official "Sonic The Hedgehog is a Great Franchise" thread

Sonic Mania is sub-50% off for the first time on Switch! I'm going to pick it up as my long-awaited entry into Sonic games.
Oops, evidently I had this wrong and it's $8 on Xbox only 😅

I'm now nearly through with the second island in Frontiers and I think I can say with confidence that this game has reinvigorated my belief that Sonic The Hedgehog is a Great Franchise thread

Does anyone else ever randomly wake up with the Labyrinth Zone music stuck in their head and then proceed to spend the whole morning humming it?

it's finally over....

one of the worst grudges in Sonic fanbase history has been resolved.
the games he admitted are good were Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, and Sonic Mania.

I got a GBA SP and a Sonic Battle copy! Completed 2 story chapters, I legit don't know/remember how the story ends 🤔 I'll continue later

Pretty fun although unlocking skill points is a bit slow 😅

I think I found a nice Tails combo, like, heavy attack (opponent bounces in the wall and launches to the air) + air down attack (opponent bounces into the ground and goes back to the air) + air blaster + ground mine

No doubt the biggest news to hit this site all day:

Do we expect a holiday/New Year's sale for Sonic games? I was thinking of finally getting Origins or Mania. 🫒🌿
I dunno buuuut Sega does seem to do sales pretty often (Origins was like 30% off within a month or so of release). Keep an eye on the eShop and if I see anything posted by the Sonic social team I'll share.

So this is a thing that happened....

(not mentioned in the tweet is that the dark ending theme "Almost Dead", as well as the true ending theme "Never Turn Back" aren't implemented at all. with their slots being taken up by duplicates of I Am All of Me. "Waking Up" is there though, and has it's own set of changes like a complete lack of lyrics.)

Sonic games are on sale on Switch. So as someone finally trying 2D Sonic, would you recommend I play Mania with I'm guessing more modern level design and the game made with QoL features in mind, or Origins, starting with Sonic 2, with more classic level design and newly implemented features? (That's just the sense I've gotten but could be way off.)

Not a huge Sonic fan, but Heroes can be fun to play. I really like the Shadow/Sonic levels in SA2 also, wish they made a whole game with levels like those.

I wouldn't say Mania has more modern level design, as it's sort of a remix of the Genesis series, it's just a really, really good remix. And a lot of the QoL stuff and movement stuff that Mania introduced has been inserted into Origins so.. man, that's tough as an either/or to start with. 😅 Mania is almost like a sampler platter of the original series so it kinda depends.

If it were me I'd do Origins and then Mania but that's possibly because I grew up with the OG games and hold them in high esteem.

I'll just nab Origins for now then! Thanks @chocolate_supra! I should try 2 -> 3 -> 1 right?
Honestly you could probably get away with just trying Origins' Story Mode, which takes you through 1, CD, 2 and 3 in that order. Having unlimited lives makes getting through some of the sore spots of a first play of, say, Sonic 1 more manageable. And if you want to go after the Chaos Emeralds (Time Stones for CD) on your first playthrough, you can retry any Special Stage for just an in-game coin (the replacement for extra lives).

...that being said, don't feel like you have to go after Emeralds your first time through. Just play the games at your own pace.

Seconding this, @Nabbit. I'd do story mode and don't trip about the Chaos Emeralds the first time. The only really big thing they do is unlock a hidden boss in Sonic 3&K which is pretty cool but I'd only go after them if you can handle the Blue Sphere special stages that have them.

Other than that, I dunno why they did this but be aware Story Mode is under the Missions menu so you gotta look for it. It's not one of the default options on any of the main game menus.

I hope you enjoy it! And don't worry about some of the negative stuff you've seen us say about some Sonic 1 zones, the game can actually be beaten pretty quickly and then you're on to the good shit 👍

I've been playing Origins actually and it's hilarious how you can cheese Sonic 1 levels with Knuckles. Never played this game with extra characters before.

Ok first time Sonic player back here with a couple more questions I missed the Origins sale for the Digital Deluxe on the eShop but it looks like it's still on sale at Target for 50% off, except it's the vanilla version Switch.

  • Do I want the Digital Deluxe?
  • Is it better to get the game on Xbox vs. Switch?
  • Colors is down to $13, I may only buy Origins first but it got me wondering, is Colors Ultimate patched now to the point where it's recommended over the Wii original or would I stick to Wii there?
Thanks in advance @chocolate_supra @VolcanicDynamo and whichever other Chao friends night be out there!

I have Origins deluxe. I would say you do not need deluxe. Switch and xbox are very comparable, I would get Switch for portability.

Colours is much better on xbox series x than Switch.

  • Do I want the Digital Deluxe?
It just adds some flourishes in the menu, some music to the sound test, and some remixed-level missions. If what you're going for is a first-time playthrough of the Genesis series, it's really not necessary. It's just, like, such a simple set of things that it really should've been included in the game instead of locked behind a paywall, is all. Simple things, not essential things.
  • Is it better to get the game on Xbox vs. Switch?
I played on Switch but I can't see the game being any different between the platforms.

Colors was patched on Switch to remove the glitches and bugs that were making the game into a psychedelic trip, but the performance is still not what it is on Xbox and PS, simply due to the way they ported it (read: it's a bloated, unoptimized port done by an outside company that the big systems can handle better just through sheer horsepower). Granted, that performance issue simply comes down to it still being 30fps on Switch, which it was on Wii, so it's no worse than the Wii version, and it has higher resolution and has some QOL improvements.

So basically Colors is fine on Switch, but if you'd prefer the 60fps you might wanna get it on Xbox.

Happy to help and to be lumped in with the Chao ❤️
