Been replaying Tomb Raider 2013 on my Steam Deck and I had forgotten how much this game puts Lara through the wringer.

Personal question:

Is gaming a way for you and your partner to bond? Or are you partners not into gaming?

I've dated a lot in my life, but never dated someone who liked gaming like I did. I had a few partners who were super casual with it(we'd play Mario Kart every now and then and we played some It takes two) but nothing serious. Just curious to see others experiences.
It's an important source of connection for my girlfriend and me.

We are both massive nerds who love gaming, and playing together is a way for us to share that passion, spend quality time together, and relax and enjoy each other's company.

We're very different kinds of gamers; while we do share some preferences, she is primarily a PC gamer and also plays a lot of more casual software like Animal Crossing and Pokemon Go, while I'm a console player first and foremost who favours more "traditional" games, but this difference has allowed us to introduce each other to new experiences and be each other's guide in exploring them together.

There are few things better than sharing your passions with the person you love. :)

It's been leaked to hell and back, to a much larger degree than we've seen in a long time for a Nintendo product.
We know some specs thanks to Nvidia, but no design. No name. No release date. We don't know if it's in production yet or when it will enter it, or if the leaked specs are still accurate. The Switch Lite had bigger leaks than this.

What's the other thing that isn't game related?
Super Nintendo World in Hollywood.

I kinda do and kinda don’t want to make a thread asking “if there’s no new hardware in 2023, will that ruin the year for you?”. I think it would be interesting to see the responses but I worry it could be seen as mean-spirited or trolling.

Maybe I can include this as a prompt for my year-end introspection thread I want to put up in a couple weeks?

The Switch Lite had a single leak of an image of its back plate, which everyone said was fake until the thing launched. We have a similar back plate leak for this this past spring with the same guy saying production will begin late 2022 at the latest.

Not to mention tons of rumors from developers with devkits.

As for the design every rumor has said this is a Switch. What if the reason there is no design leak... Is that there is no new design?

Thanks to the Nvidia hack we know way, way more about the specs of this thing and the inner workings of the API than we still know about most previous Nintendo consoles. I think you and many others are kinda downplaying how much this told us.

I'll answer it here; no, it won't ruin the year for me.

Not to derail the hardware discussion but I’m loving how the user name colors really liven up the site. Excellent work to everyone involved with rolling out that feature ❤️

Honestly, I'm more excited for the next 3D Mario game than Tears of the Kingdom. I hope we get one announced next year

Nice 9.0 progress today in Kid Icarus Uprising with both Ch 11 and Ch 12 done. Reaching the 50% mark now!

Next is the annoying Ch. 13…

Of course not, there's more to life than video games. And there's more to video games than Nintendo.

It's one of the ways we bond, yeah. Though in terms of geeky interests we have the most overlap in tastes with movies and TV shows (excluding anime).

Going to watch the trailer after I finish Guardians Holiday Special.
Watched this last night as well, it was surprisingly good and emotional! Marvel really is loosing someone important with Gunn leaving, imo he was the best at balancing humor and emotional bits, and both of the GOTG movies (especially the second one) really look gorgeous

My one cringy weakness, reaction videos, stopped me from playing Pokemon last evening. I blame the Mario movie, not my interest in reaction videos, though.

voice acting patch when

Right after the 4K 60fps one!

.... now i made myself sad ...

I feel like the only one who doesn't want voice acting in Pokémon 🧍🏽‍♀️

If it's done well like in Three Houses or Xenoblade for example, i can dig it.

If it's not well done then yeah, i'd rather have mute characters than bad VA.

The day pokemon becomes xenoblade or fire emblem is the day I might be out unfortunately. Don't like the recent installments of those franchises personally.

Investment in voice acting would mean more focus on cutscenes and narrative based on them in my eyes, which is absolutely not what I want out of Pokémon. Also just not a fan of most American voice acting tbh.

That being said, I do see why people are interested in it, I just don't see it as the definitive evolution some make it out to be (not directed at anyone here, I've seen the sentiment a lot over the years, pretty sure I'm in the minority lol)

I don't want Pokémon to have cutscenes that are directed and animated like they were meant to be voice acted but then inexplicably weren't.
I absolutely get that but I actually prefer it without the VA, if we take that tweet above as an example. Don't know what it is exactly, maybe I'll find out someday lol

The german VA in mario and rabbids 2 also turned me off, made the game feel more like nick jr. than nick to me. I usually like German voice acting, for example in Final Fantasy VII Remake or XV, even though I think those dubs have some problems with the direction

Well you put a lot of context in my sentence that i didn't really want to transport. ^^

I didn't mean that Pokemon has to become more "cinematic" like the two examples i mentioned, it was just that i thought they had a really great VA.
Using good voice actors with a solid directing.

Basically, if Pokemon gets VA, it better be on the quality level of Xenoblade / Three Houses, and if it wasn't (think BotW), then i'd rather have no VA at all.

I would be fine with voice acting, but I also don't find the absence of voice acting to be a negative.

I do however take issue with singing scenes that don't have singing in them. Now that's awkward.

Sorry, didnt mean to imply that was your point. Should've made it more clear what was just my own thoughts lol.

What I meant was that while I of course agree that good VA is nice, I personally think if gamefreak were to invest in that voice acting at all it would lead to them modifying the narrative in a way that would include more focus on longer cutscenes. Maybe that's bullshit lol

Since most singing scenes aren't exactly great, i think the solution here is no singing scenes.

Yeah they should've made that band just one without a vocalist or something lol

The problem is that they're already doing this without VA. Scarlet and Violet have several long cutscenes right at the beginning of the game that feel like someone simply turned off the voices. The series has had an increased focus on story at the very least since Sun & Moon (some would argue BW) and only parts of the presentation to match it. And like lot of the stuff in Game Freak's recent games it makes me think that it's not necessarily that they don't want VA in their games, they just cannot afford to due to their tight deadlines.

I don’t know if there’s enough interest to do a thread, but I saw a new game trailer that caused me to a do a double take and then follow up news that caused me to do another double take. There was this F2P mobile phone game I played a few years ago called Love Nikki that was essentially a Style Savvy-like dress up game. I’m not really into those kind of games I learned in part through it so I dropped it fairly quickly though I never deleted it from my phone. I guess there was a game in between, but it was still pretty shocking to suddenly see it’s now a giant PS5 open world adventure game!

I wasn’t planning to post about it, but the second wild bit is that apparently the Breath of the Wild DLC director, Kentaro Tominaga left Nintendo to work on it!

Nemona is a Spaniard, though. Often starts her sentences with Spanish. I want the trend set my Immortals to continue, I want VA with accents in Pokémon.

Maybe it just doesn't feel like the cutscenes are that long because they don't have VA for me. What you say makes sense though, I'll focus on it more while playing through Scarlet and Violet. Maybe my thing is pure cutscenes and not ones where I can press A to proceed.

I really don’t care for VA in most RPGs to be honest. I grew up on RPGs with text boxes so there’s always this tension where I can fully read the text before the VA is done most of the time and it just makes for a lesser experience because I either have to wait for the VA to finish or cut it off. I much prefer Animal Crossing or Mother/Undertale/Splatoon where there’s some noise that goes with the letters as they’re rendered on the scree, especially if they’re given a pitch that’s unique to the character.

After the first Mario movie trailer gave us the "You should be motivated like it"-Penguin, i'll proudly present the sequel:

To clarify my position on this a little bit, it's not so much that I absolutely need full voice acting in Pokémon or anything. And I definitely can understand the apprehension towards voice acting when we've seen a lot of games of this type fail at it. I'm not trying to be confrontational about this, so sorry if it came off that way.

My problem is more that there's absolutely zero vocal sounds coming from the characters at all. No sighs, grunts, hums, nothing. And this is an arbitrary choice because the Pokémon all have their unique cries and even make various sounds in the overworld. I'm not going to say that it's immersion breaking but it makes it feel like the human characters aren't even in the same space. Just something to ground them in the world they're inhabiting would go a long way. BotW has very few voiced lines (and I know that some dubs aren't great) but it uses small sound effects to great effect. I think something like that would also work for Pokémon.

The best part of that Mario Movie trailer is realizing they're leaning hard into Toad as the "mascot character that gets a spinoff" role.

Which can mean only one thing.
