That's a street sign, so it could be Brooklyn st, New Donk City lol.

Either way, this is what I wish New Donk had been, I really dislike the generic people in suits thing they went with. This has so much more personality.
I guess they could still use the name New Donk as a parody for New York, yeah ~

What I also like, besides the characters around, and how the city is designed, is that supposedly reinforce Mario coming from another dimension to the Mushroom Kingdom.

It wouldn't be special if the events of early games prior Super Mario Bros. happened just in a continent of distance like Odyssey seems to imply, you know?

Of course I'm excited to see Pauline! Who is probably campaigning for mayor back there, making Mario feel like he hasn't made much of his life post Donkey Kong drama by comparison. Will be interesting to see who plays her.

Also, maybe it's just a coincidence, but considering all the other references so far, maybe not? But in that one image of Brooklyn there's a "Clubs" barber shop right? Well, there was a "Clubs" barbershop on the Mall floor of Luigi's Mansion 3 too.

Such lore wow lol.

Interestingly, it seems NEW DONK CITY is actualy written on the side of a mailbox in that poster. Are they finding a way to mix the two places together by adding a Brooklyn to New Donk?

ah the boroughs of new donk: brooklyn, mariohatten, princesses, the donx, and, uh, yoshi's island?

Either that, or could be just someone mocking NYC with a little harmless vandalism on a mailbox ;P

Again, this being a Direct, should we expect this to have a segment with Miyamoto and maybe other members of the cast? Anya Taylor-Joy and Charlie Day speaking briefly before the trailer kicks in?

Also... hope the trailer is bit meatier; I need context of stuff.

It definitely will be. Blockbuster films usually go with three trailers.

Teaser sayng "Hey, this is coming out eventually. Get excited" -> General overview trailer with plot details -> Let's just spoil every damn scene for you

Really nuts we are already in the second trailer! Considering the movie is coming up as early as end of March for some countries, they are probably late to start the promotional machine.

and to think we were completely blind and had no hope of being any good for so long.. ever since they announced they were partnering with Illumination lol

I hope the movie will finally confirm once and for all that Cranky is the og Donkey Kong
I mean, it's not a debate anymore for decades; But in my conception, anything that this movie does or hesitate of doing, doesn't effect the games anyway;

Nintendo will want to have a clear distinction of Movie Mario universe and Game/Main Mario universe;

The faces of the humans still give me pause

They're not bad, but they look like unofficial knockoffs

At the same time, this is the same Nintendo that will likely "push" for certain things remaining similar, if not verbatim to the games.

Just because this movie brings back the "Brooklyn" backdrop that's largely fallen out of use for (Western) Mario lore since the '90s, doesn't mean I think they'll bring back other things from that lapsed era. Or even let the film series take other liberties.

But hey, prove me wrong and make the Koopalings Bowser's "kids" (at least his adopted wards!), again, for example! You'll certainly have my love and adoration if you do so.

Need to find a higher def image.

Are those kids playing Switches on the stairwell? (mid left)

Whose that creeper on the roof of the red brick building beyond the water tower? (top left)

What's the sign on that building way in the background say ? "BIG ENTERPRISE"?

I guess I shouldn't try to read too much into minor details that could simply be easter eggs/references. But still..

There are bars on the street level windows. It's definitely Brooklyn.

The leaked promo shot looks a lot like New Donk in SMO. I do see the Brooklyn Bridge though, but I've always operated under the assumption New Donk is just a Mario-ized New York and in the game it was populated with humans as well.

So far I love everything about the leaks except Peach doing the "I'm gonna cross my arms to look like I got attitude" pose that so many characters do on tv and commercials, though I'll admit that's more a decade-long personal nitpick than an actual problem.

Little bit of a cast description:

The movie tells the story of two Brooklyn plumbers who are brothers and best friends: Mario, the brave one with the "let's-a-go" attitude, and the perpetually anxious Luigi, who would prefer to go nowhere.
Soooo
it's Ferris Bueller's Day Off, basically.

and once again I'll relate more to the anxious Cameron while wondering why everyone sees the arrogant prick Ferris as the hero

The height difference even tracks, actually

I hope they announce that theirs going to be a Pikmin short before it.
This is the way to go. Those Pikmin shorts would work perfectly to be brought back like this. As a bonus, it can help bring some brand awareness.

There are other possibilities, of course, but these shorts in particular do have just such a particular quality that they seem suited for this.

They're retaining her Odyssey design, but I don't expect her to be a mayor in this context. But I'm so glad that they're actually going with Brooklyn instead of New Donk! Even the extras, are designed as "Mario characters" and not uncanny valley NPCs!
It's nice to see Pauline here after how much she's been sidelined over the years. It's time for her resurgence.

Anyhow, I vote New Donk, but with clear leanings toward its status as an ersatz New York. Mario is still isekai'd into a fantastical land, but we don't have to worry about undergoing the same horror.

That poster of Mario could be the theatrical poster of some sort of horror movie in another universe. It's kinda... off-putting.

I really love the designs of the Koopas. Especially the blue spiked one. They better make a Mario Kart reference with him.

Seems like the supposed story leak a few months back is wrong. Good because then that means I haven't been spoiled.

PAULINE! Movie confirmed top fav for Best Movie at the Oscars 2024.

Though i'm a little disappointed in those character descriptions, the one for Bowser. The first trailer made it look like he wasn't after Peach this time but the Power Stars. Would've liked it more if he would've started going after her as a reaction to being beaten by Mario, Luigi and Peach the first time.

?

Both BOTW and the champions ballad DLC got major trailers at TGA. It's a pretty safe bet that tears of the kingdom shows up.

To be fair, that was still during Reggies run as NoA chief, and he's good friends with Geoff. The relationship between Keighley and Nintendo isn't the same ever since Reggie left.

Age of calamity also got a (short) trailer there in 2020, though the game was obviously out by then and that was well after Reggie left.

Reggie and Geoff knowing each other might have helped but it surely wasn't the deciding factor. Nintendo Japan aren't going to skip the easy massive audience.

I’m honestly not sure what these examples prove to make this a “pretty safe bet.”
2016- BotW big trailer (the one with the unique musical score that later got added to Smash Ultimate)
2017- Bayonetta 1,2, & 3 coming to Switch; also had the 1st trailer for BOTW DLC part 2 and shadow drop
2018- Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Joker coming to Smash
2019- had the story trailer (2nd trailer) for No More Heroes 3; had Bravely Default 2 announcement and release date (published by Nintendo outside JP)
2020- Sephiroth coming to Smash
Those are taken from the Era thread about the same subject. If you wanna base it around examples from half a decade plus ago by all means go ahead. Meanwhile both the leadership & circumstances have changed for Nintendo in conjunction to their relationship with Geoff events. Looking at the last years it has been very much an affiliated + Smash content show. I think the chances we see TOTK to be pretty slim with no guarantee of it being there. Somehow people are gonna be shocked when it doesn’t show.

And I'm not sure what drives you to be so sure it's the opposite, with completely needless pessimism in the face of everything Nintendo has done r.e. BOTW era Zelda.

That list is incomplete for a start, because age of calamity was also shown at the game awards in 2020. It's probably a list of "world Premiere" titles, which AOC wasn't because it had already released at that point.

So, at literally every opportunity to show a BOTW era Zelda trailer at TGA for anew upcoming Zelda, they've taken it. You can say it might not happen, bit to say it's unlikely is just not based on any sort of objective look at how Nintendo has used TGA on the past when it comes to Zelda.

What they try to show at the game awards is deliberately more catered to a slightly more Sony leading audience, it isn't by chance that they announced the 2 massive Sony (at the time) exclusive icons being in smash there, or their more mature leaning titles like Bayo. And that exact audience is why showing tears of the kingdom will be a priority for Nintendo this year.

But this is going wayyy off topic here, so that'll be all I have to say on that.

It writes itself so miss me with this nonsense.

Again it really just writes itself.

I’m looking at Nintendo’s history between themselves & Geoff’s events: TGA & SGF. If you wanna look at unconvincing data-such as the Sony audience, AOC, & trailers from 5/6yrs ago respectively-then by all means go ahead. If I’m wrong I’m wrong. But, I’m sticking to slim chance & unlikely till proven otherwise.

Peach sounds turbo generic. Like she was described by a bunch of 40 year old white men in a boardroom

Wow, i didn't know that they allowed non old white men spectators during their old white men meetings.

(AKA you're likely right.)

The marketing is interesting. Like in their contract, nintendo probably had a clause that they get to reveal any new marketing materials via a nintendo direct, which is strange for a movie. But it makes sense when you consider wants as much control as possible over their ip’s.

I don't think Universal minds lmao. The first Direct pulled in absolutely astronomical numbers.

Very excited for Trailer 2, and very excited to watch the movie.
And also VERY curious about how well the movie will do once it airs.
I really hope it becomes a gigantic success. So we can get more Nintendo movies and shows and such.
I do really want a Mario Kart movie one day. It'd be like Wacky Races.

It is a bit worrying to me that they might just make her a Shrek Princess. I hope the movie manages to strike a balance between having her be more pro-active and yet stay true to the gentle demeanor she has in the games.

Yeah, probably something more akin to early seasons Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time.

I want princess Peach’s attacks to be her emotions just like that game from back in the day. The backlash in this day and age would be violent.

I predict this movie will do very, very well. Sonic the Movie and its sequel were already doing quite a bit to turn the page on "bad video game movie adaptations", and Mario just looks to continue that trend with a property that's likely second only to Mickey Mouse as far as poignancy and intergenerational recognition goes.

And when Pratt (as both a person, as well as the lackluster first impressions on his performance) remains so far the only "blight" on what looks to be a pretty stellar production, that's saying a lot, I'd say.

It is a bit worrying to me that they might just make her a Shrek Princess. I hope the movie manages to strike a balance between having her be more pro-active and yet stay true to the gentle demeanor she has in the games.
I may be alone here, but I'd actually welcome anything that actually gives Peach more in the way of actual personality and sets up for an active role as "one of the gang", again. Even (or perhaps especially) if it means fishing the likes of her Super Mario Adventures characterization from the depths of the early 90s.

The 80s-90s Western Mario "collective" and the Super Mario Adventures Nintendo Power comics were the first bits of media that actually tried to build Peach up as something more beyond "The Perpetual Damsel in Distress". The old toons were letting her get in on the action, along with actually being able to use power-ups as one of the "heroes". She could be nurturing, level-headed and wanting to see the best in others, even the likes of her kingdom's long-time nemesis, but also wasn't without bits of snark.

These are the kinds of things that I would almost expect to see in a film (series) even more than a game, because her role should also change from being just "the end goal". And until if/when the likes of Pauline, Rosalina, Daisy, Toadette, Wendy, and/or Birdo get added to the mix (with hopefully significant roles), she's going to be the main/only lady holding it down.

Yeah, probably something more akin to early seasons Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time.
Princess Bubblegum would be a big step up. I'm more worried about forced archetypes. that blurb of her being "not your typical princess" just feels too corporate to me. lots of telling rather than showing (granted, we haven't seen her in action)

I love how the different koopa troopa’s have unique armor and things to differentiate them, it reminds me a bit of the older mario rpg’s, where classic archetypes like koopa troopa’s or bombombs were treated like individual characters with their own preferences and sense of style.

I don't think Universal minds lmao. The first Direct pulled in absolutely astronomical numbers.
Yeah, dont think its a bad things, just interesting to see how nintendo is handling this collaboration, since its unlike anything they have done since the original mario movie

I'm hoping this one is an actual trailer. The last one was a good demonstration of the animation style and the voice acting of Jack Black and Keegan-Michael Key (and Chris Pratt was also featured). But it didn't really feel like a trailer, just two early scenes
I also felt like they were teasing us
