StarTopic Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet |ST| Who You Callin' Paldea, Friend?

I almost wiped to a NPC trainer that was standing at the main road to the bug gym.

I'd say they tried to give the games a slight challenge this time.

Or maybe RNG for being paralyzed / hitting yourself / missing the attack is massively out to kill me.

Ok, but can we talk about how GF's title screen game has been on fire for both PLA and SV? lol

On another note: is it just me or are levelling limits quite strict this time around? I've been training half of the new Paledean mons and I still hit the obedience cap. Does other Paths complation work towards level cap removal as well?

Is there a way to decrease friendship/affection? Like bitter medicine or something?

I did a picnic ONE TIME to see how it was and my Pawmi is already getting affection bonuses smh

They did the Zelda think. No elaborate intro cutscene, just a static screen. its solid.
But i am missing an intro.

Bitter medicines exist, I think the school store sells it?

Okay, I finished the crater.

- I'm not a huge fan of "walking while talking" segments in video games, but the descent was alright. Partly because you can still gather stuff and beat up Pokemon while descending.

- I wish more of the game had looked as fantastical as the Crater. Added bonus of including abandoned research stations. Always like that vague sense of foreboding. Then the hilarious Ancient Jigglypuff appears. I love how the ancient Pokemon all look like their designs were given to a six year old child, who was then told to make them look more prehistoric. My personal favorite is Brute Bonnet.

- And wow the professor is already dead and turns out you've been talking to an AI-operated robot created in Sada's image. I totally did not expect cyberpunk plot threads. Also love the fight against her, she was kinda kicking my ass honestly.

- Biggest takeaway? I would love a Legends Koraidon/Miraidon. Set it in the Great Crater, a lush, untouched wonderland of wilderness. Your home base is a research station. Make it happen, Game Freak.

- But wait there's more! I can... rechallenge the Gyms? Hell yes I will. ok fine I'll also find those stupid stakes

dix sur dix agree with you. The post game seemed a bit weird, but it feels like even before DLC there is a lot to do besides filling our your Dex.

Does anyone know where to check how many coins I have collected so far? I tried googling it but all that gave me was a spoiler of what it evolves into lol

Just found a level 75 Pokemon in the wild 🤨
Yeah I encountered one too and was surprised I was able to catch it with only 2 gym badges! I then tried to catch a level 19 pokemon and seemed to refuse and took almost twice as long lol no consistency

Huuh why can't I evolve Basculin in this game? This is so dumb, now GF is gonna start restricting which pokémon can evolve in a game and which can't?

For whatever reason, every Hisuan regional or evolution is only per HOME transfer.

Which i kinda understand for those that need items (though you could've just added them...). But for those which did evolve by level up / move it's plain dumb.

One of the NPC's explained that: Evolutions are extinct now and were only possible in the past.

Luckily time travel is a thing in the pokémon world.

Basculegion only evolves from white stripe Basculin, which is a regional form exclusive to PLA. The red/blue ones still don't evolve... so, yeah, we're stuck waiting till HOME for white stripe Basculin and Basculegion.

Stantler is explicitly stated to not be able to evolve under its own power anymore in the Violet dex, which is reflected in-game as it can't learn the move it needs to evolve. I don't know if there's anything similar for Ursaring and the like.

Is it dumb? Kinda, but GF tend (with some exceptions) to maintain a weird sort of continuity when it comes to Pokemon evolutions.

Backup data from the funky PC transfer thing that I’ve never had properly explained to me. Are Pokémon digital? Who knows.

When do evolutions get the fancy background vs just taking place in the open world? I saw a clip of someone evolving their starter in the classic rainbow void I haven’t seen in my game…

I’ve seen the rainbow void once, no idea what triggers it. Maybe if the game determines it doesn’t have room for the animation or something?

I think it's this? I've noticed it for eggs hatching too when I'm on slopes. It's honestly a bit weird and I'd be fine with those just happening as they did before. PLA's evolution screen was honestly kinda boss.

Yeah it was, the music with it was great.

I’ve also oddly had a Pokémon evolve once with no indication, my Tandemaus evolved and unless I missed it I just randomly had a Maushold suddenly

Just finished the main game and I have to say I didn't expect the final act to go in that direction. Genuinely surprised a Pokemon game's story actualy made me feel something close to watery eyes. Kudos to Gamefreak, honestly.

I'm curious about what monsters are in the game's files but not yet transferable like Sword Shield's "kanto starters, zeraora, etc", is there a list on that out there?

I seem to have ran into another bug... For a while, wild pokémon suddenly had ridiculously low catch rates. I ran into a lv 14 Basculin, and even though I have one badge and my pokémon are around lv 17-18, the damn thing was impossible to catch. I wasted like 20 pokeballs and a couple great balls on it until I gave up. I thought something was wrong with that specific pokémon, but then I ran into a low level Eevee and the same thing happened, it was impossible to catch.

I suspected it was a bug and rebooted the game and it went back to normal, I can catch both of those pokémon in that same area with 1-2 pokeballs. So I'm pretty sure it was a bug.

Yeah with how mixed the camera and textures can be in the open world I prefer the fancy screen lol

It’s gonna take me a while to beat this one, I just decided to swap out for a party half my level to go explore a part of the map I hadn’t when I was first near it… Team Star can wait

Also, I need a shiny smolive. I won’t spoil why, but 🥺

Love that levels aren’t too static in areas! Just ran into a level 25 vespiquen in an area of level 10 combees…

I wonder if that’s a reflection of my general level being around there? (Current party is all level 10s but boxes early mid 20s for this exploration)

Probably not a bug, just luck variance. Basculin has an insanely low catch rate of 25 for some reason, and Eevee is a 45. That’s the same as a Pseudo base like Gible, for example

I think one of Maushold's Pokedex entries includes "the little one just showed up someday" so I think that's an intentional joke.

Also fits with the Pokemon world's general understanding of biology (or at least their poor sex ed)

Some catch rates are super weird, Beldum being as low as 3 (!) will always be the most surprising to me.
Yeah some of them are bizarrely low. Beldum is a 3, same as every legendary, which is nuts. And there’s a handful at rate 25 like Basculin, Scarmory, Steelix, and oddly Mantine. Can be very tough to catch early game with worse poke balls.

Oh well that makes sense then! I thought it was due to some kind of weird battle/world situation or something, but that’ll teach me to read the Pokédex.

Wtf, it says on my ID card that I have battled 3 shiny pokémon. I guess in one of my slaughters I murdered two of them unknowingly...

AYOOOO GOT MY FIRST SHINY

I had essentially given up on finding any since there wouldnt be any overworld jingles and sparkles.

SECOND ONE! It's like they only show up when you aren't looking for them LOL

Also the new breeding mechanic is interesting.. not fully sure what to think of it actually! I do like how the eggs stack, but its too bad they dont immediately go to your bag.

Question for those who are playing. Are you missing exp share and is the experience challenging or is it still piss easy?

I have a team of about 9 Pokemon that I'm cycling through and I'm getting my ass handed to me

My team is currently Box 8 (ok it's only most of Box 8) so I'm anticipating the game will start getting pretty hard for me once I get to the mid game. I've been keeping up so far (2 Gyms, 2 Titans, 1 Star Base) and haven't been doing too many trainer battles, but that's probably going to change soon given what I've heard (even from people with much smaller team sizes)
Is it random for Tandemaus to evolve like that? Because mine evolved normally
I think it's if it evolves in your party via EXP Share it'll evolve "silently" and if it evolves as the actual fighting Pokemon it'll have a normal evolution

This counts evolutions, so evolving a shiny would count as 2 (or eventually 3 depending on the mon).

I've made a bunch of progress over the past couple of days. Starting taking on Team Star and handled two bases, defeated a third titan, and got my third gym badge!

I have a comfortable rotation of seven Pokémon at this point, with lots of evolutions juicing up my squad:
  • Samba the Quaxwell
  • Ballet the Dolliv
  • Boogie the Clodsire
  • Rumba the Naclstack
  • Baroque the Armarouge
  • Tango the Primeape
  • Disco the Kilowattrel
Playing with them in camp, seems like a lot of them love to take naps, but they also adore playing ball. And it seems like we got a little romance brewing - Disco and Samba had a baby Wattrel! I guess a Water/Fighting type and an Electric/Flying type can find love......

I'm still looking for an eight to round things out. Maybe a fairy type, or a steel type?
