StarTopic Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet |ST| Who You Callin' Paldea, Friend?

Okay, so will there be an in-game way for you to find out where all those “ominous” stakes are? Like with markers on the map? Or do you really just have to find each one?

Because if there’s no in-game map markers or hints or anything, I might as well go ahead and finish the Crater before I go scouring the map.

I found one of these by coincidence when parkouring around with Koraidon in the rocky area right to the big city (i need to start learning names ffs).
It's on top of one of those ... hills? Dunno if that's the best word for it.

What are these for? I interacted with it and the text prompt said it "disappeared" or something.

I never got any in-game indicator. Had to look at a map online. They don't even mark the ones you already have

Unlocks four legendary shrines across the overworld

You can catch them from raids
That sounds better than expected. Do you know if every Pokemon has a chance to have it (similar to Max Raids in Pokemon Sword/Shield's DLC areas), or only a select list of Pokemon can only have them like Pokemon Sword/Shield's Max Raids in the Wild Area?

Thank you for reading.

This is what the History professor talks about, she will mark the doors on the map (you can then fly to the doors) for you after finishing her classes and storyline, but not the stakes. She will hint that the stakes are all around the door, but you don't get their direct locations.

I did these all yesterday, some are tricky. There are 8 stakes for each door.

Every 2 stakes will remove a chain from the door, so you can kind of track your progress. Removing the last stake for a given door will give you a message.

I found Charcadet in the cliffs area east of Mesagoza and he is super cool. I wanna have him in my party, but I picked Fuecoco.. Two fire types doesn't seem all that smart.

The one positive this game has over every other Pokemon game is that all 18 types get a "gym" so to speak. There's no type that gets screwed like grass did in Johto.

I'm playing Scarlet so at least I'd get Psychic instead of Ghost, but still. At least I think it's Psychic?

I think for the three paths playthrough it won't be a big issue if you have one type more than one time in your team.

So happy. Toedscruel is one of my favroite pokés this gen and just found a shiny of it. Goes straight to my main party!

Well Grass does have a gym in gen 2. Ground and Dark don't, though. Dark gets an E4 member, but Ground doesn't have any big battle representation I don't think. Unless we count Brock. Which I don't.

Brock is rock (in the name haha) so definitely not. You're right, ground isn't specifically represented in Gen 2.

You're misunderstanding my comment. When I say "screwed like grass in gen 2", I meant that grass types have a disadvantage in gen 2 because the gym and boss layout is very unfavorable to them. Much in the same way Charmander was "hard mode" in gen 1 since the early gym layout was unfavorable to fire types. Since gen 9 has a gym for all 18 types, there are moments that any type will succeed or struggle over the course of the game. In addition your early game route can change based upon who you chose ie if you went grass you can go east and deal with the rock titan and electric gym leader instead of going west and getting bodied by the bug gym leader and flying titan.

I believe every Pokémon has a chance to have their HA, though it may be more common at higher tiers

Correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't you be able to give you Mon the Hidden Ability via Ability Patch item, too?

I'd rather try my luck for the item then for a Raid that checks everything, from ability, to Tera-type to whatever i'm forgetting.

I hate the vocal track added to the gym music. Hated it in SwSh too. Am I alone?
I loved it SwSh but feels almost entirely pointless and unearned in this game. Doesn't help that the theme isn't even all that good.

Yep, it's just you

You're not the only person to complain about it, but it seems the majority love the vocal part coming in to add intensity to the gym battles
Lol, I don't know why I said am I alone, obviously I'm not.

I don't get intensity, I get cheese. I can't stand it haha. I'm assuming the elite four probably does the same thing?

I understood the chorus part during Sw/Sh where the gyms were kinda big sport stadiums for a huge audience.

Don't really understand it in ScarVio where gyms are more ... small in scope.

Though generally, Sw/Sh's gym battle theme is a banger and that is kinda hard to beat to begin with.

Aaaaand there goes my happy feeling for finding one of these by accident
Yeah there are EIGHT of those things each for four gates? I've found maybe eight in total and I've been going off the beaten path a lot I feel.

Toedscruel is one of my favroite pokés this gen and just found a shiny of it
I also found a shiny Pokemon! Like, literally shiny. It was just one of those Terastal Pokemon. In all my years of playing Pokemon, I have never found a shiny. What do we say to RNG? "Not this gen too, I guess..."

Yep, it was great in SwSh. Both novel and fitting.

Here though? It feels kinda cheap. They could have just done a more intense rearrangement of the base gym theme, throw in some new musical ideas and melodies and it would have been way cooler. Or at least that's how I feel about it.

Still, it's no big deal

Yeah, it's a great tune but it feels like they saw that folks loved it in SwSh and they just did that again, despite it not fitting as well thematically.

I'm still very early into the game but music had been hit or miss so far. I was super excited about the first wild battle theme until I found out it only plays in an minuscule area and the following theme is kind of boring. The trainer battle theme is alright, nothing special compared to other gens. General environment themes are good so far.

Overall, Legends had a much better soundtrack.

Haven't listened to the gym battle theme yet but as long as it's not as bad as gen 6s I'm good.

Ability Patch will give any Pokemon their hidden ability, it's a 1% drop from 6 star raids though, which are level 90 lol.

You just breed the raid Pokémon or use it as is. They come with more perfect IVs at higher levels and it's easier to get mints and bottle caps than it is to get the patch

No shinies for me yet. I've found maybe ten or so in my lifetime playing Pokemon, all of them from either Let's Go or Arceus.
Same here, and I'm sort of on edge about missing one while I'm playing and can't tell if I like the feeling lol.

I enjoy the feeling of "bug watching" and inspecting the groups for an odd one out, but i don't like that it has be googling shiny forms to know if it's one I'll even be able to see since I previously liked being surprised in game by them.

Has anyone else encountered a glitch where they can't pick up items in the overworld? At least three separate locations all last night on the path towards the Klawf titan; there's a glowing beam of light (like the TM items) but there's no gold and white Pokeball there, and two Gimmighouls against a cliff face in two different areas I'm running around trying to press A but they are completely unresponsive. Would it be related to the memory leak?

On the upside I did just catch my first shiny, a Shinx (which is very reminiscent of the first shiny I ever caught that wasn't the red Gyarados in Gold, so I nicknamed him Lucky like my Shinx in Diamond haha)

Oh, and not to double post, but out of context spoilers for the cutscene I just watched in this game:

Clavell asking what 'cheugy' means and I swear to God had me sweating bullets on my answer because if these kids at school were namecalling the Director I was ready to throw down and fight them. Without Pokemon.

so is there any reason why LP and cash are two different things. auctions only take cash and TMs only take LP but everything else takes both, I don't get why these are separate currencies

also what's the point of making bottle caps buyable. why can't the hyper training guy just bill you 20k directly

I like to think someone said it about clive

Alright, so I finished all the three main story quests.

- I respect the idea behind Starfall Street, but it really falls flat because we're only told, and not shown, the despicable bullying. It doesn't help that the Team Star raids have relatively shallow gameplay mechanics. However, the sharply dressed leaders did put up a decent fight. Clavell was also hilarious, and he introduced me to Quaxly's bombastic final evo, so that was fun.

- I feel like the Herba Mystica quests could have been bigger in scope, but overall I enjoyed their respective trials. Always thought Pokemon should have more scenarios where you're actually chasing down those beasts, like a true tracker. Taking on the giant Great Tusk (weirdly not a Donphan evo based on the dex?) was one of the more epic moments in the game. These questlines also have the best rewards-- more abilities for exploration! Arven's story is a bit basic, but hey, I wanted his poor doggo to get better, too. Speaking of his story, it does end on a cliffhanger, and apparently I have to get the allegiance of a certain Champion-ranked trainer before I can continue...

- Might be the Pokemon veteran in me speaking, but I still enjoyed the gyms the most. Yeah, only half the gym challenges were actually somewhat interesting (my favorite of course being chasing after Kofu in Port Marinada), but I like the variety of things you have to do. The Gym Leaders were cool, definitely a step up from SwSh, and I already liked the Leaders there. Nemona's battle craziness is also very endearing. As for the difficulty of those fights, I still think the gym leaders should have had level scaling. But I also don't mind the erratic difficulty spikes and dips haha.

- Related note to the gym path: I kinda hoped there wouldn't be an Elite Four and that we'd get a SwSh style tourney again, and the League battle in this series was... kind of dull, to be honest. It even starts with a boringly boring job interview. Yawn. I do have to ask though: is the third member of the Elite Four always Larry or is it based on whoever you picked as the toughest Gym match?

So yeah, got those done and dusted... but wait! The story isn't over yet. Looking forward to descending into the Abyss Crater.

I think this is pretty much the same for me. I don't remember if I hatched one in Sw/sh. I think I hatched a shiny starter Pokemon. But my first shiny ever was in, I want to say, FireRed and it was a Paras. Big problem was that it was in the Safari Zone. I did not catch it and I was very sad lol.

Here though, I've gotten a shiny Nymble(by luck), Swablu, and Lechonk.

Yeah I had that happen to me a few time. I tried picking it up several times by just spamming A, but a few I just had to send out a pokemon to pick it up for me since they seem to have a bigger radius for picking up items. Hope that helps

Good to know, thank you! I guess they might not attack the Gimmighouls but at least I can figure out if that glowing Pokemon item is supposed to be there or not haha

As a small aside (if you or anyone else can help), is there a consistent way to lock onto a Pokemon in the wild? I can't tell if it's L or zL but I just want to lock on a Pokemon to see if I have caught it before or even if it's male/female and if it's one of the alternate forms I'm looking for. Even when I'm surrounded by wild Pokemon the camera just wants to spin around behind my back

Just had an antire party of 6 wiped out by a trainer who had a lv 14 Psyduck and Mudbray lol

I was never so happy for having GO'd in a game before lol

Mudbray is a beast. I got taken to task by a sunflora. Cause I was the mining area so it's mostly ground type Pokemon so I went with a team meant for that. Yeah....that Petal Dance attack can really tear through your Pokemon lol.

Nah it's really bad. It doesn't sound good to begin with and now lacks the context for it making sense like it did in Sword/Shield. I actually think the soundtrack is really good this time around (thought it was pretty bad in general in Sword/Shield) but that song sticks out like a sore thumb.

I had a wild Stantler get lucky with Hypnosis and literally Stomp half of my team to death, and the stupid bastard refused to stay in almost 20 goddamn Pokeball that I very nearly used the lone Ultra Ball I've found so far in the wild.

But I caught him, and for his insolence he's confined to the Boxes.
