Lakeside Park is brutal and would be awesome in Mario Kart 8 (I love the most difficult tracks the most) and there is a disturbing lack of Bowser Castles in Mario Kart 8. There’s only 8’s which is decent. Bowser Castle 3 is pretty cutthroat with some wicked turns and a really good final trek on the grating.

If it was up to me, I’d have had Bowser Castle 3 GBA, Bowser Castle N64, and Bowser Castle Wii in the BCP lol.
So, You would have a Bowser Castle Pass instead of a Booster Course Pass... ;)

I spent a bit of time looking at the video and screenshots for Berlin Byways, and the more that I look at it, the more confused I get as to how the hell it's going to be routed. This is what I came up with; each colored line represents a path that you'll follow at some point during the race.

SAjRKvL.png

RED PATH
  • Starting at the eastern intersection, this one is fairly straightforward for the most part. We can see in the trailers that you'll race from east to west, following the same route as Berlin Byways 1.
  • As seen in this screenshot, if you look way in the back, you can see the arrows redirecting the racers from the red route back onto the main road.
  • Now, looking at 0:09 from the footage we have, we can see the racers going in the same direction, directly into the Thwomps seen in the previous screenshot. We can safely assume that this clip is on the red path, and therefore would take racers back to the starting line due to the nature of the track.
PURPLE PATH
  • Where things get a bit interesting is on this path. 0:00 from the footage shows racers once again going through the Brandenburg Gate from west to east, and if you keep an eye on the dash panel behind the Gate you can see that the racers are once again approaching the Gate from the road. However, there are no Thwomps here, meaning that this portion must occur separately from the red path.
GREEN PATH
  • The longest path that we can discern. This one is likely where 0:15 takes place, as you can see racers passing by the bottom turn and continuing on towards the Berlin Victory Column roundabout. If you look to the end of the road, you can see that the right turn here is blocked off by a fence. Take note of the floating item boxes that Yoshi flies through here.
  • Now, if you look towards the left in this screenshot, you can see that the other side of the roundabout is also blocked off. Therefore, anytime you proceed to the western end of the main road, you're forced to take the long way around.
  • Continuing off of that screenshot, given that Yoshi is turning right, this route must go down the winding path that reconnects to the main road.
ORANGE PATH
  • As if it wasn't already confusing enough, pay attention to the middle gap of the Brandenburg Gate in this screenshot. There's no floating item boxes, meaning that this screenshot takes place at a different time from the glider clip from the green path. In other words, racers are sent back down the main road a 4th time.
  • It's possible that this is where the green path links up, but the fact that there are item boxes underneath the Brandenburg Gate makes me doubt that. In Tokyo Blur, the item boxes on the second lap disappear on the third lap, so I'd expect them to behave similarly here.
  • Unfortunately, we have no idea where they turn off. We can see from the screenshot that they don't turn off on the northern intersection, but whether they go down Berlin Byways 3 or Berlin Byways 1R is unknown.
  • The gliding section could easily swap with the ground section here; we don't have any way to tell otherwise. The important thing is that we now have evidence that racers will travel west on the main road twice. One of those will lead down the green path, the other could go anywhere.
BLUE PATH
  • The easiest path to discern, this can be seen pretty clearly at 0:06. This follows Berlin Byways 2 pretty closely.
  • We currently have no idea how they reach the train station, or where they go once they exit the train station.
I'm sure I probably missed something, or there's probably some magic screenshot that resolves everything, but this is what I could come up with. I honestly have no clue how this will get tied into a single race, particularly in regards to the green path. It'd be a lot easier if the green path could link up with the orange path, but as I said above, I don't think that's terribly likely. That means we could end up going down the main road 5 separate times, which would be pretty wild.

Gun to head, I guess I'd route it as follows:
  • Start on the green path, then cross the main road and take the red path in reverse (Lap 1)
  • Take the orange path, then follow the green path until the intersection, turn onto the blue path, then take the red path (Lap 2)
  • Take the red path again(?) until it links up with the purple path (Lap 3)
That'd be astoundingly messy, but I honestly have no better ideas at the moment.

TL;DR: Someone at Nintendo got lost in Berlin, and EPD9 decided to use that event as inspiration for the Berlin Byways route.

Big fan of the way the narrator said "Boo Lake"
Not a big fan of 3DS Rainbow Road getting in over Wii Rainbow Road.
Wii RR is coming in Wave 6; they'll both be in.

I figure it'll start with Berlin 2 since that's the one that actually released first in Tour. That's the direction we see all the racers going at 4 seconds in; seemingly positioned as if the race just started.

It’s really hard to follow speculation with all the datamining and patterns and leaks. Can someone tell me the chances of GBA Rainbow Road and Rosalina’s Ice World lol

GBA Rainbow Road remains possible, but there are two Rainbow Roads coming already, 7 and Wii. There are seemingly no more 3DS tracks after this wave so Rosalina Ice World is out.

My post, 3145, on the last page has roughly all the info we know about upcoming tracks in text form. (Technically you won’t see Rainbow Road Wii listed, but the last track of the DLC is a Wii track and nothing else is going to conclude the Blue Shell cup)

No more 3DS courses is a bit of a bummer; there's many excellent tracks yet to make it over and it's already twelve years since Kart 7 launched, thanks to Kart 8 DX the Everliving.

I am glad to see more Super Circuit love, but I also need the full game on NSO.
Merry Mountain looks lovely.

Do they take Euros here? Because I think I'll book a Christmas break there.

Everything on the table from Tour can be seen here:

Good time to update the image though; now that we can finally mark off the Wave 3 courses are confirmed.

Djqpuow.png

In terms of the number of remaining courses from each game, what we believe to still be accurate is:

SNES - 1
GBA - 2 (one is Sunset Wilds)
GCN - 4 (one is Waluigi Stadium)
DS - 1
Wii - 3 (likely DK Summit, Koopa Cape and Rainbow Road)

N64 and 3DS are seemingly done now, so little hope for Rosalina’s Ice World; and GBA has a ton of fierce competition so it isn’t looking good for GBA Rainbow Road.

Predictions before the inevitable Wave 3 datamine messes me up.

Berry Cup
  • Tour Amsterdam Drift
  • GBA Sunset Wilds
  • Tour Yoshi Island
  • DS Airship Fortress
Boomerang Cup
  • Tour Singapore Speedway
  • GCN Daisy Cruiser
  • Wii DK Summit
  • Tour Los Angeles Laps
Feather Cup
  • Tour Orlando Avenue
  • GCN Waluigi Stadium
  • GBA Riverside Park
  • Tour Madrid Mayhem
Cherry Cup
  • Tour Bangkok Rush
  • Wii Koopa Cape
  • SNES Choco Island 2
  • Tour Bathroom Breakout
Acorn Cup
  • Tour Vancouver Velocity
  • GCN Mushroom Bridge
  • Wii Toads Factory
  • Tour DK Minecart Madness
Blue Shell Cup
  • Tour Athens Flight
  • GCN DK Mountain
  • 3DS Bowser Castle
  • Wii Rainbow Road

Do you think we‘re gonna see an Egypt-based tour track? From the beginning on there were pyramids on the MK Tour promotional material.

My only issue with that is trying to figure out where everyone gets turned around. There aren’t any other obvious places that racers can get turned around besides the intersection between Berlin Byways 2 and Berlin Byways 1, but as I said before, racers have to pass under the Brandenburg Gate twice in each direction. If everyone gets flipped on the first lap, then I dunno when they’ll hit the orange path.

So that’s 11/24 remaining courses though, what are the rest? All Tour?

According to the prefixes, 8 will be Tour city tracks (every city track in Tour at the moment has been datamined for the BCP) and the remaining 5 will be “new” tracks like Merry Mountain and Ninja Hideaway.

It still feels really unbalanced to have three out of those five in the last wave. Doesn’t really scream “going out with a bang” to me…

That's why I'm starting to lean into it not actually being five unknown tracks. The current rate is two city tracks, one Tour nitro track, and five retro tracks per wave. Why would Nintendo change that for the last wave? This is supposed to be a retro themed DLC. And now we know that there's at least one city track that won't make it in. I dunno. I think it's just a coincidence.

??? How are three entirely brand new courses not the most hype thing to end the DLC with?! Assuming they debut in MK8D before Tour, who knows what we’ll get! I’m sure they’ll likely be pretty cool courses, too. That’s way more exciting than reused past courses could ever be to me!

This whole DLC was marketed and sold based on retro tracks though. That's the whole point of it. The new tracks are still designed with Tour in mind too, it's not like they're made for MK8D. I don't blame people for not being excited.

I’m with @Tye , you end with a bang for Wave 6 to get everyone still on the fence for the pass. Also just because retro tracks were the focus, doesn’t mean they were the main/sole attraction. In classic Nintendo fashion, they used very specific wording in the North American trailer with “you may recognize some of these courses from past games.” They left it wide open for new courses to appear and after seeing how Ninja Hideaway was handled with no prefix matched with the prefix leak I was convinced. You can go back through the thread to see debates on that. We have five new courses ahead which is awesome.

Hopefully those tracks are more like Ninja Hideaway and Merry Mountain, not like Sky High Sundae (which is kinda hilarious considering I love SHS, I just want more grounded unique tracks). Then I'll be fine, if not a little confused.

I'm not overly thrilled with the idea of leaning super heavily on nitro tracks either, mostly because everything has to also work with Tour. Merry Mountain and Sky-High Sundae are incredibly simple tracks, and while I still like both of them, I'd gladly swap them out for some more exciting retro tracks in a heartbeat.

Now, if the remaining nitros match Ninja Hideaway in creativity and imagination, then I'm happy. But I just don't believe they all will.

Ninja Hideaway is awesome and one of my favorite tracks now, but Sky High Sundae is meh. I'd rather have another retro track than that.

My Hot Take is that Sky-High Sundae is a more visually interesting Excitebike Arena.

If we are gonna all say that Sky-High Sundae is boring, then we gotta say the same for Excitebike Arena. I will die on this hill.

counter hot take, excitebike arena is more visually interesting and has the randomization gimmick. it's a way better stage in every respect

Counter counter hot take, the randomization gimmick just means I get to press the jump button at different places. Yippee, so interesting, I guess?

Where the fuck are the turns. At least Sky High Sundae and even Baby Park let me have more involved turning. It honestly makes Excitebike Arena one of the least interesting courses to actually play, but people online love it, so whenever it comes up, I have to play on that boring course and it makes me like it even less. Least it has a cool song.

I will die on this hill.

it's interesting because it's excitebike you clod, it had a course editor and that's the track

that being said if I had made excitebike arena it would have had no turns and just been a really long straight three parter

It's nostalgia bait for NES kids, I tell you! Nostalgia bait!!

not to mention further proof that outside the F-Zero tracks, the NIntendo crossover tracks are some of the weaker tracks in MK8 that are mostly saved by their presentation more than their course designs.

Are you trying to hurt me.

mario kart 8 had 48 tracks by then, having a gimmick track with no turns would've been fiiiiine (especially if it was on the shorter side)

and of course it's about presentation and gimmicks, most mario kart tracks are

My problem isn’t that Sky-High is boring, it’s that it’s complete jank. The automated pathing is terrible, and there are so many turns that just feel wrong.

With that being said, the jank does help it be a bit more interesting. Excitebike is indeed boring.

My main issue with SHS is how flat some of the textures look and the lack of collision on the railing boosts. That railing has both issues - no collision and the texture is just solid yellow or whatever. It looks ugly and weird as hell. A little depth to that railing would’ve done wonders - your eyes don’t really ignore it since you’re aiming for it.

So the whole course just looks cheap at parts but I’m a sucker for dessert worlds and ice cream so I still like it.

Are you referring to the pathing with auto-steer on?

All oval courses are boring, this absolutely includes the dreadful Baby Park.

I will say at least Sky High Sundae is at least fun on 200cc, but I rarely get to play on 200 with others so whatever.

I’m talking about the jumps. They feel absolutely terrible, especially on 200CC.

Imma be honest I never noticed Excitebike being randomized and even after I learned that it is I've failed to notice it. I like it tho.

Sky High Sundae is easily the ugliest track in the game to me, it almost looks like a prototype in my eyes. Glad the Christmas race looks really good

I think they're both boring lol now that you mentioned it, I think I even give Sky High Sundae the edge because it's shorter and ends faster haha

In other choices that I think are weird: why Madrid? In Europe there are cities with much more famous for their landmarks (for example, why not Rome?). Even if they really want a Spanish city, they should’ve gone with Barcelona, which has things like Sagrada Familia, Ramblas and Park Guell and are more famous than anything in Madrid.

Still don’t really believe the codename md stands for Madrid, but what would it be if it isn’t :)

Looked at this a bit more, and I have a few corrections that make a fairly big difference:
  • I was wrong about the roundabout being fully blocked off. The fence that I thought blocked the left side of the roundabout is actually just blocking off the right side of the roundabout from the other side. This would leave Berlin Byways 2 completely unimpeded.
  • There's a portion of the track that was never used in any variant, but is still perfectly functional. This section is not blocked off at all, which means it's likely used at some point.
With these two pieces of information, everything falls into place much neater. There might be a few minor changes, but this is what I would expect for the route, with red as lap 1, green as lap 2, and blue as lap 3.

EDIT: Another big piece suggesting that the unused track section is used can be seen at the start of the Berlin Byways footage. Despite the racers proceeding directly under the Brandenburg Gate, a green shell can be seen running directly parallel to it. It's possible that it just took a weird bounce, but the much more likely option IMO is that there are other racers still crossing over at that point in time.

I think they’re probably going with the more populous cities, and Madrid is more populated than any of those, so that would explain it.
