Hypes AF for 3DS Rainbow Road music.

Whenever my NSO+ subscription lapses, I'm gonna have to buy the Booster Course Pass just so I'll be able to race on streets of light to that sweet, sad tune if the mood strikes.

This is easily the best Wave so far, and I don't think it will be topped for the rest of the pass. So many good tracks and they all look amazing.

Scattered thoughts on each track.
  • Tour London Loop might be the best looking Tour track yet. The fog effects really help differentiate it from the other city tracks, and help disguise the ugly buildings. Not sure what the routing will be like, pretty hard to tell given how big the track is, but I'm guessing it'll be pretty basic.
  • GBA Boo Lake looks fantastic, and the anti-gravity is a great addition. Nice to finally have some decent looking water in one of these tracks.
  • 3DS Rock Rock Mountain is really showing its age. Looks like a wave 1 track, and a pretty big step back from Mushroom Gorge. Maybe it'll look better in-game. At least the added anti-gravity is nice.
  • Wii Maple Treeway looks great, happy they toned down the color saturation a bit from the Tour version. The crazy bastards also added a saxophone to this song, the MK8 band cannot be stopped.
  • Tour Berlin Byways is gonna have some weird-ass routing as I said above, but it looks like it might be the best Tour track yet in terms of design. Preserving both the Whomps and the traffic is a big win, especially the former which aren't in MK8 at all yet. The music is also gonna go ridiculously hard.
  • Not much to say about DS Peach Gardens besides the music, which sounds lovely. Still looks great.
  • Same as above for Merry Mountain, except we already heard the music before too.
  • 3DS Rainbow Road looks awesome, really glad that they deviated away from the normal Rainbow Road style into something different. Can't wait to see what they do for Wii Rainbow Road.
A few other thoughts.
  • Make sure you give a hug to any Double Dash fans in your life.
  • The fact that Maple Treeway got moved up from Wave 6 makes me think that the music leak got conflated with the prefix leak a bit: Maple Treeway was initially planned to go in wave 6, but the music was a sign that they had instead moved it up, and we just missed that. As a result, I'm expecting Waluigi Stadium and Sunset Wilds to be in Wave 4, as those music tracks being completed could also be a sign that those two tracks are close to completion. Similarly expecting Vancouver before Wave 6, although it could only end up in Wave 5 rather than Wave 4.

Woah, these look amazing, only Rock Rock Mountain looks mid, but I expected that. Still don't get why they added that track and not something like Shy Guy Bazaar or Wario Shipyard tho. Those have much more unique themings, which would make for some more diversity.

Boo Lake has had a MAJOR glow up compared to Tour.

I guess it was a sticky situation for Ratgorl after all; Maple Treeway really did get fast-tracked to Wave 3, lol.

Lakeside Park is brutal and would be awesome in Mario Kart 8 (I love the most difficult tracks the most) and there is a disturbing lack of Bowser Castles in Mario Kart 8. There’s only 8’s which is decent. Bowser Castle 3 is pretty cutthroat with some wicked turns and a really good final trek on the grating.

If it was up to me, I’d have had Bowser Castle 3 GBA, Bowser Castle N64, and Bowser Castle Wii in the BCP lol.

I really appreciate all the little touch-ups to the courses this wave. Boo Lake, Rock Rock Mountain and Rainbow Road all have anti-gravity in segments where it makes sense; the former also has more natural looking wooden ramps instead of the default ramps it has in Tour (I remember there being concerns about this):

The foggy overcast weather on London does a lot to add to the atmosphere there too; and the visual touchups done to Maple Treeway and Rainbow Road especially go without saying. Hope this wave sets the standard for the remainder of the DLC (and maybe they can update the first two waves a little visually too... please?)

issuing a challenge to nintendo: clean up the graphics on every track except for mario circuit 3

Maple Treeway really came in and said "fuck your datamining" lol. But seriously though, now that we know the contents of the DLC aren't locked in predictions become a lot more interesting. Maybe some courses get replaced? We have five blank slots presumably for Tour but that could always change.

I think we keep the prefix count. I think if I understood correctly the recent Tour datamine suggests even more is coming, but for most of this year the leaked City Tracks and leaked New Tour/BCP Tracks lined up exactly with the number of slots for the Booster Course Pass.

I’m torn how I feel about this in the sense there are more N64 courses I want for example, but I’d also want a complete enough collection of all the Tour/New tracks in Mario Kart 8 forever even if that means getting 14(!) city tracks.

Barring another huge datamining discovery, I doubt we'll really have any idea as to how accurate the prefix leak still is until Wave 5, but I think there's a few things to watch out for:
  • How many more new tracks is Mario Kart Tour getting? If the total count exceeds the prefix counts (14 cities, 8 nitros), then Nintendo might either feel compelled to move more Tour tracks into the BCP, or they may instead spread out what they currently have even more across a second BCP.
    • If we only get two city tracks in Wave 4, then that might be a sign of the latter, considering that there were initially 3 slotted in here.
  • Another N64 or 3DS track would obviously debunk the prefix leak, although that could simply be a result of a blank spot getting replaced by a retro. Similarly, if we somehow go another wave without getting a GCN track, I'd consider that a debunk as well; I seriously doubt they double up on GCN tracks twice.
  • What will the remaining "cornerstone" tracks be? It's pretty clear that Nintendo is saving the final slot in each cup for their "big" tracks, either iconic fan favorites or brand new nitros. However, based on the prefix leak, Wave 4 and Wave 5 both feature a Tour track and a nitro track, along with Wave 3 featuring the less popular (but still good) 3DS Rock Rock Mountain. Is Nintendo willing to give up those slots to the more unknown Tour tracks over fan favorites like DS Airship Fortress? That could be another reason for them to shuffle things around some more like they did with Wave 3, or to open up the door for a BCP2.
At the end of the day, we're most likely just looking at them reshuffling the order to better fit what they want, rather than a complete overhaul of the track selection or a BCP2. But it's still worth keeping an eye on nonetheless.

I'm just not sure how Nintendo will pump out 4 city courses (at least), multiple variants of existing courses, and 5 brand new courses for Tour in less than a year. They haven't gotten anywhere close to that in a single year before. It's a bit much. I think they're all planned for Tour, but some won't make the jump.

as for the tour question, I am praying nintendo kills it immediately

any hands are 100% better spent elsewhere
Nah, the same tracks being designed for Tour are also going into MK8D for the most part. That's far better than the alternative (aka working on an unnecessary new Mario Kart game).

the alternative I had imagined was anything good but you're right that that may not be guaranteed

I miss EPD 9, Tails. I miss them a lot. I'll be back

I think it’s a little different than it appears in the sense the newer courses of waves 4, 5, and 6 are happening because of the Booster Course Pass which are made for both rather than just Tour Tracks that are coming to the Booster Course Pass. We only need three more cities to complete the fourteen slots, not four.

IIRC, there's three Tour city tracks in Wave 5 and two in Wave 6. Only Vancouver is known out of those.

We already have a change here with Maple Treeway being bumped, but prior to that with the music leak it looked like:

Wave 4
Fruit: Amsterdam, Wii, DS, New
Boomerang: Singapore, GCN, GBA, LA

Wave 5
Feather: Tour, Wii, Sunset Wilds, Tour
Cherry: Bangkok, GCN, SNES, New

Wave 6
Acorn: Vancouver, Maple Treeway, New, New
Blue Shell: Tour, GCN, New, Wii

Waluigi Stadium is floating now. So yeah three Tour City tracks left.

Anyone want to try to guess Wave 4 now? Here’s all the clues we have to work with:

Remaining prefix count with leaked tracks:

SNES 1
N64 0
GBA 2 (Sunset Wilds)
GCN 4 (Waluigi Stadium)
DS 1
Wii 3 (DK Summit, Koopa Cape)
3DS 0
Tour 8 (Amsterdam, Singapore, LA, Bangkok, Vancouver)
??? 5

Music Leak Placement:

Wave 4
Fruit: Amsterdam, Wii, DS, New
Boomerang: Singapore, GCN, GBA, LA

Wave 5
Feather: Tour, Wii, Sunset Wilds, Tour
Cherry: Bangkok, GCN, SNES, New

Wave 6

Fuck I forgot about Bangkok. I figured I was missing something lol

For my own Wave 4 guess, I’m going to keep the prefix list as is since I think the spread is decent. Wave 6 would have two Gamecube tracks then. I don’t play Tour so it is hard for me to guess anything with City tracks so I’ll keep those the same from the music leak.

Fruit:
Amsterdam
DK Summit Wii
DS Airship Fortress
New track (Yoshi)

Boomerang:
Singapore
Waluigi Stadium GCN
Sunset Wilds GBA
Los Angeles

I think Sunset Wilds is coming sooner than later with the music leak. DK Summit spreads out the mountain and snow courses a bit here and saves Koopa Cape for the summer. Airship Fortress is awesome and isn’t a city track, so it is chosen over Delfino Square. I don’t think Waluigi is coming too much later as it was on the banner and in the music leak. New track is the Yoshi one. Wave 4 releases in April.

As I said previously, I think the music leak is a sign that those specific tracks are coming sooner rather than later, and as a result I'm expecting GBA Sunset Wilds and GCN Waluigi Stadium in Wave 4. I also think DS Airship Fortress is pretty much a lock, unless they decide to shift it down to Wave 5 or 6. Given that we're probably looking at a lot of DK over the remaining waves, I'd slot Wii DK Summit here as well, so that those tracks can be a bit more spread out, as well as ensuring one Wii track per wave. Change up some ordering, and this would be my prediction:

Berry Cup
  • Tour Amsterdam Drift
  • GBA Sunset Wilds
  • ??? (Yoshi)
  • DS Airship Fortress
Boomerang Cup
  • Tour Singapore Speedway
  • GCN Waluigi Stadium
  • Wii DK Summit
  • Tour Los Angeles Laps
This would also put Vancouver Velocity in Wave 5, rather than Wave 6.

High five we are in virtually full agreement!

Not surprised, it definitely feels like a fairly safe prediction. I think Vancouver could end up swapping with Singapore, but that's really all that I would change beyond maybe reshuffling the positioning.

I'm guessing that selection will end up being pretty popular until Wave 4 is fully revealed, unless Nintendo accidentally leaks the whole thing again.
