Palace 6 is absolutely the GOAT, everything comes together for that one

Palace 6 being the first one where we get the vocals to Life will Change is such a small detail but it absolutely elevates the mood. To me it was the peak of Persona 5 cause it brought everything to that point full circle.

Now on Palace 7. I love this one. It's extremely long, but it's really well designed, and it feels like the appropriate climax to the story up to that point.

And then the boss battle, oooof

I don’t think I like the palace itself nearly as much, but the story elements around it really elevate it. And yeah, probably the best boss in the game, although the original final boss comes very close. Best boss music, though, hands down.

I think in vanilla it was definitely a slog (though I always loved it in vanilla too, because the themeing, music, story elements are all so great, and I liked the novelty of a lot of its gimmicks). Royal really streamlines it and makes it not such a drag imo (though I can totally see others still finding it too long).

As for the boss, yeah, it's still a top tier boss fight the music is like 90% of the reason though let's be honest. I think the finale in vanilla and Royal both come close though, as does Kamoshida for altogether different reasons lol

OK I think I'm mostly good on maxing all confidants by the end of the game?

I've approached the final day of vanilla P5 and as far as progress goes I maxed out all 5 social stats and got everyone to completion except Kawakami (8), Iwai (7), and Shinya (7) and will need to handle Mementos requests for all 3. Kawakami could be an issue cause she hasn't allowed me to advance rank at all in December and has been shown as blocked, but hopefully she lets me advance in Royal's new arc?

I'm sooooo close that I'm gonna be bummed if I can't complete it all. lol

You can't advance a social link that needs a Mementos request completed, until you complete said Mementos request.

Once you do that, it should unlock right away. I think you should get Kawakami maxed out as soon as possible, because her final perk is letting you go out at night even after you went to the Metaverse.

Yeah what I mean is that I officially don't even have the Mementos request from Kawakami yet because she wasnt available to hang out with to get it in December. So it's impossible for me to advance at the moment. Definitely wish I had done her confidant sooner in hindsight.

Oh noooo.

Yeah, just wait until Royal, that should unlock all the locked confidants again

Thinking about Royal so far it is such a massive improvement over the original Persona 5 it is just insane. I knew about the new content for a long time but I didn't really appreciate how big the impact would be until actually playing it. The changes to Mementos alone make this feel so much more playable than vanilla P5. Like yeah the game is massively easier due to all the QoL changes but in return its more fun and less tedious to play.

Only thing that original Persona 5 did better was the intro animation and I will stand by that being better than Royal's even if half the party was barely present in the original opening.

Yeah, one part of Kawakami’s confidant needs you to be at school, so you can’t do it at certain moments like example in the summer vacation. Kinda annoying when you don’t know when is that point.

September Spoilers:

Man... that Okumura boss huh? Took me several tries and felt like I needed to get a few lucky dice rolls to clear it. (Doesn't help I'm doing an Arsene-only run and I'm only letting him learn curse element skills.)

So far this has been the weakest "arc" in the game for me. I love the "infiltrating the death star" vibe, but Morgana's "defection" and Haru's off-screen awakening (no I don't count her "half awakening") were lame. Characters' awakening I'm just a huge sucker for.

Other than that still enjoying the ride!

Just finished P5R on Switch today with the Good ending but not the True ending (missed to raise a relationship high enough before half November). I also missed to raise another relationship before a certain time and missed a full dungeon & party member. So I started a NG+ right away.

I thought the game would keep my XP level but nope.
At least I kept everything else. Such a pity you have to restart all the tutorials again and can't access your Personas until you get to the Velvet Room.

Ugh, having to go on dates with the worst person in order to get the best ending.
They aren't dates, really, just hanging out. Unless you mean Akechi and then yeah you're totally dating. Seriously, though, I didn't get the love for that character in the original game - but in Royal, well... I get it now

When I get 3 messages in the same afternoon I get so stressed out.

I want a way to politely explain to people why I can't hang out today. Even though I know these are ones and zeroes in a game it makes me anxious lol.

Will try and put together some more thoughts later but I finished this morning and…wow man. Straight masterpiece. Absolutely loved the new semester, palace and ending. Just masterfully done.

I was wondering why Morgana kept telling me to go to Mishima about the maid flyer Ryuki picked up... and hoo boy, I wasn't expecting that twist.

Been taking my time on hard mode. Absolutely bodied the boss of the second palace just now using Kaguya’s shining arrows. Fusing DLC personas isn’t cheating!

Just finished the game after 125 hours. Wow that was a long game, the ending always manages to get some emotions since it's saying goodbye to a cast you've spent so much time with.

Anyways I managed to finish all the confidants and hang out with everyone in the bonus month. I was sweating a little but I had a grace period of a couple days thankfully.

Overall I'm very very happy I decided to play Royal. Just an incredible improvement to the original P5. I found the new arc to be fantastic too. I had my doubts if they could make anything to live up to the stakes and incredible finish of the original game but I appreciate how they went with a more emotional one here.

Also holy shit did this game redeem a very certain character to me. I was not a fan of them in the original game and their arc felt rushed, but here they got way better treatment and came off as more likeable.

Hearing this to begin the game's finale absolutely floored me. Hot damn it's been a while since a music track in a game hit me so hard. Just perfect for that moment in the game.

I very much enjoyed but didn’t necessarily love the original Persona 5.

Persona 5 Royal is a masterpiece.

Often when I’d hear about Royal upon its release, it was focused on the new semester that’s been added to the base game, news that didn’t immediately excite me. P5 was already a very long game after all, and some of the later dungeons sorta dragged. Was adding more to the mix really the answer?

After spending just short of 100 hours clearing Royal, I can say the answer to that is an unequivocal yes. Royal is far more than just the base game with an expansion snapped on at the end. Every piece of the game has been revised, revamped, streamlined or otherwise improved upon, all while adding a ton of variety on top. Guns not only feel viable now, they’re some of the most powerful tools in your arsenal for inflicting status effects and setting up big damage. Mementos feels so much more interesting with the addition of Jose, his special store and the stamp system. Those dungeons that could be a bit of a drag don't drag anymore. There are more confidants, more side areas with new activities like darts and cards. You also get all of the base game’s DLC, which allows you to change up your party’s look and — more importantly — change the battle music to the SMT game the outfit is based on. Changing your look and battle music in such a mammoth game is so appreciated. Countless changes like this, big and small, permeate Royal and universally make it a better game.

I didn’t mean to sell the new semester short, earlier; the overall package is much more than the new dungeons and characters and ending, but that new content was some of my absolute favourite in the game. I loved the new villain and theme of the palace. Great music. I loved the introspective nature of the palace too, getting to see more humanity and setup for the target.

When I finished the game I switched over to Live A Live, which finally came in for me at the library. While it seemed like a neat game, I just couldn’t get into it at all. I think that says less about Live A Live and a lot more about how much I loved my time with Royal. So, I…started a New Game+ lol. I’m already at Madarame’s palace.

Just a few short months ago, a repeat playthrough of Dragon Quest XI S convinced me it was my favourite game of all time. Just a few months later, that pick has changed again. Persona 5 Royal is the best damn game I’ve ever played.

I can feel an immediate replay of P5R coming on as well... I don't want it to end.

Unless I just take a dive into Strikers...

This is one of my favorite moments in gaming. This song playing at the culmination of a 140 hour game with these characters is perfect, and an amazing capper to an amazing game and soundtrack. Hits so hard.

So I've heard of P5 difficulty and I am cruising in hard mode, a mode I never pick for my first playthrough in any game. Maybe its my years of experience playing SMT games lol. Don't get me started on Kaguya, I have not "open" any of the dlc personas since, Ill try them later.

I’ve played through vanilla and Royal on PS4 on normal already, and hard is shaking things up a little. My main strat for normal was to clear mobs with auto battle and not having that option is making things more interesting. But also, like you, I have other SMT experience, and it’s not too bad.

Interesting. I am still having a blast so its good to know that little change goes a long way.

To me, this is the best song in the game. Arguably the best song in the whole series.

That's a tough one, because in a vacuum I think I like other songs more and there are better tracks. But in context of when it plays, and the emotion it brings with it, you might be right.

Speaking of emotion, shoutout to Sunset Bridge (which I rarely see mentioned) for being one of the most bittersweet songs in any OST ever, especially for how it plays at the end of the game (if you know you know):

This is on sale on the eShop already, at least over here in EU. 41.99€ (30% off). Not bad, given its release date on the platform.

About Makato

I don’t get why people like her so much
She kind of just says you guys suck at getting organised but then doesn’t do anything Morgan’s wasn’t already doing
I mean her persona being a bike is cool but that’s about it

She's super boring imo, I never got why people liked her so much. 🙈

I hate the Morgana argument plotline. It feels so tacked on, it doesn't really amount to anything significant, and it makes Morgana look worst as a character. I think the whole story pacing between the 4th and 5th palaces is really weird. In isolation, the Hawaii trip is a nice breather but it pull it means you can't interact with Futaba who just joined your party. It's also when Morgana starts acting weird for no apparent reason.

Question, can you get the confidants listed in the OP (the ones to unlock the real ending) to those levels by only meeting with them when you get IMs, or will you have to seek them out from time to time as well?

Currently 50h in playing via Gamepass and I'm tempted to pick it up on Switch with these 50% off deals...

Akechi can be found two times a week. I think you can see him on Tuesdays and Satursday. Kasumi I think you can find on Wednesdays.

Makoto is the best! She’s great in battle too, but mostly I just love her as a character and really identify with her especially in her social link/personality. She’s my favorite character in the game.

But why? ;o
Because she’s basically me in high school. Smart, straight-A student, but who knows little about how the real world works and actual practical knowledge. She’s a mediator and tries to keep people in line, but can get flustered and has a lot of insecurities underneath. She’s constantly pressured by her family to keep up her grades, be the best, be involved in school activities, etc., but she’s had little experience with actually finding herself and her own motivations and goals and has spent her life being led by others. She puts up a wall of strength and confidence, but has a ton of vulnerability behind that wall that comes out sometimes. All of these things describe me in high school to a T. She’s amazingly relatable.

She’s also badass, one of the most useful characters in the game, has the best awakening, and is one of the most well-integrated characters in the plot due to her sister and situation. (She’s also IMO one of the best-suited characters to date and she’s adorable with Joker, plus the game almost seems to put them together at least in base P5, if you care about that, but that’s minor)

Anyway, I could go on and on :)

Great write-up, thanks!
I can totally see why you'd like her so much, then. Can't say I'd be able to identify myself with her to such a degree/at all, really, but hey, that's why it's great to have a cast of varied characters like Persona has.

Though I'll have to say that there's no one I'd resonate to such a degree with, sadly. In that sense every single one of the main characters feels slightly alien/strange to me personally. (Probably also why I vibe with P4's main cast much more, being from a small town myself and with how they go about their lives and all that.)

So very much all of this 👆

Wow, the boss for the 5th palace is complete shit. It combines a ton of frustrating things at once. Resetting fights because you didn't kill them in a certain amount of turns. A timer that keeps going even during dialogue. Of course people are going to skip the dialogue in the time keeps going. Nonstop talking. Long animations that make a frustrating boss fight slow to a crawl. I don't mind a challenge but when the game throws so much narrative bullshit to gets in the way of you actually taking on the challenge, that's a massive fuck up.

I think if it wasn't timed, this would be a great fight, but that timer really is a step too far

Got slightly delayed by Pokemon releasing, but route to the seventh palace's treasure is secured! I'm excited for this boss fight 😏
