Once Piece games missing Nintendo will never be not weird for me, especially knowing Eiichiro Oda is big Nintendo fan.
I'm almost certain that One Piece World Seeker was going to get a late Switch port. Before and during the time of its release the game's producers, when asked about a Switch version, did the same song and dance that always happens whenever an anime-based Bamco game gets eventually ported: "The Switch wasn't a thing when we started development", "We're looking into it", "If fans show demand, it will happen", yadda, yadda, yadda. Of course, then World Seeker bombed super hard, so if the port was a thing they probably thought it wasn't worth it.

(this should lead us to question the wisdom of not launching anime-based games on Switch day 1, but that's another story)

What I'm trying to say is that unless One Piece Odyssey is a complete flop, a Switch version should eventually pop up. It being a turn-based game doesn't hurt its chances, either.

They know their way around Switch hardware but we still are not getting One Piece Odyssey on Switch, despite how much sense it would make. Not sure if it even will receive a late port. Well in this case, ILCA was only invovled with some of the game design and modelling for the story cutscenes. Nothing really on the tech side.

I’m guessing the decision is ultimately up to Namco anyway.

I've been wondering what's going on with Production Group No. 1 at EPD, especially since traditionally PDG No. 1 series like Kirby and Xenoblade are now under PDG No. 2 according to the Ask the Developer interviews.

Has anybody looked at raw numbers for SV credits? How many more/less people worked on it than SwSh?

Still, it probably doesn't give us the whole picture when work outsourced to third parties is credited just by the studio's name (or am I misremembering here?), but I'd be curious to see wheter PLA's much bigger dev count compared to previous mid-gen games "stole" staff away from SV.

Ignoring localization and producers, I’m getting 685 (SV) vs 438 (SwSh). The crossover between the two is about 170, with approx. 250 of the SwSh staff not working on SV, and approx. 500 SV staff not working on SwSh. Game Freak only has 169 employees as of this year, so a lot of that extra staff came from Creatures and outsourcing.

Based on what we know about the development of SwSh, both the DLC and Arceus probably entered full production around the same time (mid/late 2019) with a mostly different team of leads, then SV started to ramp up development when the SwSh DLC was almost finished in mid-2020 (Hiroyuki Tani becoming the Planning Director for SV backs this up). There’s quite a lot of crossover between the programming teams in the last few games, too.

I mentioned it in a post above, but this is my current prediction of Game Freak‘s pipeline:

  • Pokemon Scarlet/Violet DLC - In full production since Mid/Late 2022.
  • Gear Project title - Based on job openings and staff like Masao Taya and Masafumi Saito not being credited since Little Town Hero.
  • Mid-Generation Pokemon title - In pre-production since Late 2021, likely now in full production in tandem with SV DLC. Probably being helmed by some of the Arceus leads (Kazumasu Iwao, Yuichi Murase, Masayuki Onoue etc.).
  • Pokemon Generation 10 - In pre-production since Mid/Late 2022. Won’t enter full production until SV DLC is completed.

My last Pokemon game was Emerald. Then i was pissed that i couldn't transfer my pkmn to thr newer versions. Nothing has changed since.

I would gladly play Pokemon again, if there were a version that allow me to just explore the world, battle other Trainers and catch all available Pokemon.

But i guess theres F-Zero chance this will happen .

Scarlet and Violet is pretty much what you're asking for. save for the catching all the pokemon. that's an ask for any dev

Wonder if such positions are easier to fill than game development positions. Cartoon studios are hurting right now, so I wonder if the promise of a more stable job working with a single studio's IP is more enticing

How have I seen ZERO talk about this Game Freak trademark?

Pocket Card Jockey 2 is coming.

I'm surprised it hasn't been announced yet. We are overdue, so I'm thinking it could be a chunky update.
I think I got this figured out:

1st update = One month after release

2nd update = Two months after that

3rd update = Three months after that?

It should add some other extra substantial things too.

I'm curious what EPD's production capacity right now is on big titles going into 2023. Right now, what we do know is that Zelda and Pikmin are in their final stretch, but adding DLC support across games they have a lot on their plate. (MK8D, Splatoon 3, maybe more Switch Sports, then the inevitable Zelda and Pikmin DLC)

Would they be near capacity if we add in the EPD8/EPD10 platforming projects and some presumed EPD4 casual stuff? I know there's been talk about EPD9 working on a new title alongside MK DLC or EPD7 having a Tomodachi game that's been long in development. It feels like though 2023 is going to be the busiest we have seen EPD for a while.

We should get a better picture in roughly 2 months. But yeah, 2023 seems like a year full of EPD projects. I think out of Tokyo's projects we will first see the 3D one for Holiday release, simply because the movie in March/April, not that it would have some crossover but simply because it makes more sense than a 2D DK project from them, not sure where would this put a 2D Mario from EPD10.

"According to a new video from Did You Know Gaming, which claims that a leading member of the Metroid Prime team pitched the game, which was styled after the XCOM series, to higher-ups at Retro, following the conclusion of the Metroid Prime series.

Paul Tozour, who worked on Metroid Prime, told Did You Know Gaming that the game, which was planned for the Nintendo Wii, was conceived in late 2007 following the end of Metroid Prime 3’s development.

Posting it here too; I dug up the Project Valkyrie artwork that I saved ages ago before they were taken down and uploaded them for your viewing pleasure:

All in their original, no/least artifact-ridden quality! :p

If there was going to be another 3D Mario, they would have already talked about it by now. It’s the kind of game they’d announce many months before release, not a few.

A new 3D Mario announced by a February direct for release in Holiday is totally plausible. Nintendo gonna announce some big new holiday game for 2023. Zelda will be out by May. They'll announce it prior to have for E3 too

We got EPD10 accounted for a while ago (Pikmin 4), but 8 and 9 haven't put out any brand new titles in a while.

Who knows when 8 will get their next game out, or what it will be.

What's going on with 9 anyway? They're the biggest mystery of all the EPD teams.
I don't think we've heard Kosuke Yabuki say anything in a while. MK8 DX DLC can't possibly be all they're doing (and I doubt it was what they've been up to "all this time"). Aren't they making something like a sequel to Min Min From Smash Bros. & Her Unimportant Friends?

Side note: One thing to keep in mind for EPD5 is that while Animal Crossing and Splatoon are both under this department, they're not made by the same people. (i.e. Aya Kyogoku has nothing to do with Splatoon)

Mario Kart Tour is, essentially, Mario Kart 9. It has just as much content as a full-fat MK, it has a new engine, a new platform, and a new control scheme. While I'm sure that there are other EPD9 things cooking up, maintaining not one but 2 live-service esque Mario Kart titles is a big enough lift.

As for EPD 8, I'm sure it's the next 3D Mario. Who knows how much delay the pandemic added to the schedule, or how they want to time it out relative to hardware, but I think there is a reason we've been fed a steady diet 3D Mario ports

The Mario movie will probably coincide with a new game, probably 3D, for the holidays. It’s too big not to have either a 2D or 3D game out. Nintendo can easily slot in 2D Mario for 2024 as well as the big summer Mario game, given how much DLC content we’ll get next year (Splatoon 3, Switch Sports, Zelda, Rabbids 2, MP DLC?).

Nintendo has loved to have a summer Mario game since 2018 as well, so maybe DK is that game next year.

I can see the early 2023 direct having 2D DK and 3D Mario as its announcement bookends, with a new Zelda trailer. Then SV DLC and Detective Pikachu 2/another spin-off (much like Jan 2020 presents) revealed for the now seemingly-annual Pokémon Day presentation.

It seems highly unlikely that Nintendo has a Mario game ready to for the movie, but I suppose it's possible. Nintendo knows well how awful it is trying to attach a video game to a media release calendar, they've been involved in Pokemon for years, and I doubt they want that to happen to Mario. Video game tie-ins to movies are almost always bad and almost always driven by the movie release schedule and that doesn't match Nintendo.

But maybe a remaster? NSMB Wii is 2D, couch co-op, strong casual vibes, and if you played it in college you're probably a parent now with a Mario Movie aged kid.
