Reviews Pokémon Scarlet & Violet | Review Thread

You can tell its pokemon release season lol. The internet is ablaze, GF is trending, and the pokemon community is divided. I knew a pokemon game without "controversy" would be impossible. Good times.

Cant wait for tomorrow.

I don't think they can improve performance much at this point, though, (and I don't know if it would help) but, assuming that the game runs dynamic 1080p docked (like previous titles), and that it's actually better handheld, they could introduce a dynamic 900p performance toggle. But then again it's GF so menu options are a scary thing? Could maybe help.

Glitches, bugs, and jank are definitely a thing that they can and should patch though.

GF will likely improve on the open world and the gameplay loop for it with the DLC, latest with the next mainline game.

I don't think it's exaggeration when i say that BotW, with it's sublime open world, would've been very different if it didn't have the luxury of at least 5 years of development and constant refinement.

Heck, i was even sure the next mainline Pokemon game wouldn't even have anything open-world or even open-segments like Arceus.
Then they should at least be not so greedy and give GF a few more years for development.

Yeah a friend let me borrow for a bit, my copy comes tomorrow.

Not in terms of performance and especially not on Switch

Well Sonic team hasn't focused on making Switch a priority. But even looking at stuff like Sonic Unleashed or Sonic Generations or reaching back to Sonic Colours on the Wii they have always delivered solid looking games and the performance can be iffy sometimes but nothing game breaking lol. Sonic team makes more than Switch games. If anything, the fact that sonic team is shipping on 9 platforms and game freak ships on 1 should make it clear.

And Game freak made a switch game at the start of this year that look better than the modern sonic team games

Nintendo has zero input in this. This is all between GF, TPC and Creatures Inc.
I don't believe for a second that Nintendo has zero input in this. You don't publish, house and aid a studio with development like they've been doing without having input.

I have to wonder if covid lead to Legends arceus and pdsp getting delayed but gen 9 still had to be out at this time hence why gen 9 performs so much worse then L:A.
Personifying an entire outlet is an extremely broken way of viewing things. Different strokes for different folks. Look no further than their 4/10 rating for Frontiers followed up by a video from two other editors who liked the game.

NL is actually one of the better outlets in this regard since their video reviews are often compiled by a different person who doesn't shy away from tucking their own perspective in at the end of the video, no matter how different it is.
+1

I wish more companies would be like Nintendo Life. Between the review and the discussion you basically got 4 different opinions on Frontiers where you would likely have a really good idea on if you would or wouldn't like the game and why.

Performance issues aren’t a “controversy”.
Precisely, if we want things to improve from a visual and performance perspective, then reviewers need to call this stuff out. As they should with any game that has serious performance or graphical issues. I think the industry was willing to give gamefreak a pass at first given their inexperience with 3d console games, but now there should be a discussion about how things can improve. Pokemon deserves better, quite frankly. Its not people picking on a down troddent indie franchise, its pokemon! Lol things should be much, much better.

I’m still super pumped for tomorrow but I’m be lying if I said I want’s super disappointed by these reviews. Sounds like the performance is bad to the point of actually harming people’s enjoyment. Alex Olney from Nintendo Life basically said he would really like this game is the performance was so atrocious to him that it got him to stop playing.

I personally have no problem with performance as Age of Calamity is my GOTY 2020 and I 100%ed it and it’s DLC, but it’s really damming that this is scoring less than Let’s GO and Sword and Shield. Game seems like it still blows SwSh and Legends Arceus out of the water but the really need a second day one patch to fix how this game runs. Because a game that looks this poor should not be running as poorly as it does.

And don’t blame Switch hardware for this.

I find it hard to believe Nintendo doesn’t have a producer of some kind in Pokémon titles development.

They got some even in titles they don’t own series in, no?

I just don't understand why they didn't space out the releases better. BDSP would launch in late 2021, Arceus could launch in late 2022, and Scarlet/Violet could launch in late 2023. That's three straight years of Pokemon titles. It gives time to add content to and fix the presentation of Arceus and Scarlet/Violet without losing any sales (hell, BDSP and Arceus would probably sell MORE) and it helps the reputation of the brand. I don't get it.

TPC is Nintendo, GF and Creatures, so Nintendo is involved and GF and Creatures can't be involved twice 😅

A joint venture funded / financed by three companies != consisting of three companies. It is its own company, and there's a strict deliminiation to the others.

Nintendo is "involved" by being one of the three IP owners, but Gamefreak is a full on third party developer and Nintendo has no saying in their development.

Regarding performance, it's bad but it wasn't SMT V or Age of Calamity bad to me. Those games broke me and I refused to play them pretty quickly. With S/V it was more an annoyance, but one I got used to. The poor visuals and constant pop-in bothered me more than the fairly frequent frame drops.

It's clear that the performance / visuals / jank are going to make conversations about the game design difficult for some time. That's a shame.

Not surprised with the technical issues as it was showing up on marketing materials

Looking forward to trying their new more open approach! And seems like people are liking the storylines

I think I managed to mostly avoid spoilers this time, so I have yet to see the starter evolutions and unannounced Pokémon

Expanding on this a bit with Masuda's own words:

“It’s a little more complicated than that in certain scenarios, like for example, the producing role that Creatures originally held went to The Pokémon Company, and a percentage of the rights went with that so there are certain complications, and it depends on the project, but there is no situation where Nintendo and The Pokémon Company will put pressure on Game Freak or something like that.”

Sadly, the larger pokemon machine dictates it. Anime + TCG wait for no one I guess.

Though, with that in mind even if S/V was anchored in place I imagine the other games could have shifted?

Nintendo is definitely involved to some degree with Pokémon, but they can't just take the reigns and force their will onto the franchise because they only own 33% of it. If I'm not mistaken, Creatures spawned from ex GF exployees, so I expect them and GF to have a close relationship and easier goal alignment, which leaves Nintendo as a minority. At the same time, it's not like the franchise is doing terrible so Nintendo can be like "no you're wrong, listen to me".

It's a stable power balance. The franchise is doing wonderful as it is; on their side Nintendo has it as a huge console seller that has basically guaranteed the success of their whole handheld line up since the game boy so they obviously aren't dissatisfied. If Nintendo had 100% control of they franchise they probably would make changes to how it's developed but that's a matter of their principles and philosophy as a company, not because the financial situation requires them to do so. So they can't simply force their philosophy onto two other companies, they have a very successful partnership, that would just be irresponsible.

Even without Masuda's statement, how could anyone think Nintendo is dictating anything on Gamefreak?

We're talking about Nintendo, who decided to completely start over dev of MP4 including a public apology. Nintendo, who's very likely holding back a 1-2-Switch sequel because they themselves felt it was really bad.

If anything, Nintendo would give them more time and would've spread out Arceus and BD/SP more from each other that there wasn't a need for a new mainline game in 2022.

They could have, but they probably want a game out for the holidays each year. Either that or DLC.

I expected a lower score due to performance but this won't make me enjoy the game any less. Arceus had similar issues, albeit probably was more polished and I nearly completed it in opening weekend. I'll be on this game and WZ 2.0 like white on rice this weekend.

Yes, but Nintendo being part of TPC means Nintendo has a different than 0 input on the development, which is the point I'm arguing.

TPC is a separate company but Nintendo probably holds a significant amount of the board chairs with their own representatives, there is no way TPC operates completely independently from Nintendo. It would even be bad for them because they wouldn't be able to line up planned release schedules for hardware and software.

We are not saying Nintendo dictates the development cycle, we are saying their input on it is different than 0 like you said. But as I said in my previous post here, I do believe Nintendo doesn't intervene much due to the nature of their partnership and how it is working wonderfully for all parts involved.

Game Freak is like kid in school that is okay with passing grade
Game Freak is like kid in school that has a bad home life distracting them from being able to engage in their schoolwork but no one understands that and instead gives them hell for it so they grow up to perpetuate the cycle and in this essay I will

John is cool and all but the whole PLA twitter back and forth really got to him. He's still a little salty from it lol

Speak for himself, I find SV very pretty games.

People are obsessed over graphics like there is some law that requires devs to do better than -insert an arbitrary benchmark- and we are contractually entitled to outrage if they don't.
