Third palace theme goes HARD! Dammnn.

Also, thank goodness that Mementos has more than 1 soundtrack, that soundtrack in the first 2 areas was starting to get annoying lol.
Yeah they updated Mementos aesthetically in Royal and it helps a lot with the monotony.

Third palace theme is amazing, and yet it’s still my third-favorite palace music. They’re nearly all bangers.

Starting the third palace now. I forgot how much of a low point the lead up to this palace is. It's drawn out way too much.
It’s definitely one that’s gone down for me on replays. I think I was overrating it initially based on loving the (first half) music track and it heavily featuring my favorite character. But as a palace, the villain, the lead up and plot in general, it’s very medium

The leadup to the third palace I actually love. The slow build up of the tension with the parallel plots of the Phantom Thieves looking for their next big target, the problem with the mafia, and Makoto's story, which itself has two major through lines, one being her investigation of the Phantom Thieves, and the other being the depiction of her slow mental deterioration under all the stress and unfair expectations having been placed on her. The payoff to the boiling point of all this buildup that is Makoto's Awakening is fantastic too.

Until that moment, I would argue this arc is the high point (or at least tied for it). It's after this that it goes down the hill because the villain never really evolves other than his (admittedly horrifically raised) stakes (and also lacks the personal connection to the party members that the previous two villains had), meaning the story itself effectively stalls here (because in the previous two palaces, the through line is the villain's change of heart, in this case the through line is Makoto's awakening, the villain himself is never treated as anything more than an incidental plot device to achieve that). So after Makoto's awakening, the rest of the dungeon isn't really... anything, narratively. There's not even an attempt at pathos or characterization made like with Kamoshida or Madarame, because the villain is just a cipher.

The issues with the story aside, the dungeon is also the worst designed until then (and generally one of the worst dungeons in the game), being overly long and really gimmicky (with the final gimmick being a step too far). That makes the game feel like it is dragging on at this point too. At the very least the music is great, so there is that.

But yeah, I personally would say the buildup here is amazing, it's just everything that follows that drops the ball.

Yeah, I agree with this. The villain and lack of personal close connection, overall kind of bland look of the palace, and the second half of the palace (especially the too-long vault unlock section) is what really brings it down, but the leadup is good especially if you like Makoto (and if you don't, what's wrong with you?) and her awakening is amazing.

This is one of my favorite things about the game, though, and how it uses the differences between palace 3 and 4: By the end of Palace 3, things are starting to feel a bit repetetive and you're getting used to the general flow, and you might be starting to wonder if there's just going to be a 'villain of the week' style thing with every palace. But then BAM the game hits you with Futaba's palace, really shaking things up both with a VERY different and cool looking palace, a very different villain who's not a villain, and a personal story that also has a huge impact on Joker and his living situation, etc. Plus it's one of the best dungeons in the game, which doesn't hurt either.

The themeing of the dungeons in this game is so inspired. I mean we’re talking about phantom thieves raiding museums, banks, tombs(!), and a goddamn casino! Those are amazing stages for PT heists.

Even the ones that don’t directly tie into the thievery aesthetic usually tend to stand out. The Ark, the Castle, and the Royal dungeon are all fantastic and distinct visually and thematically. The only dungeon that fails this test is Okumura’s, and, well

Apparently I have dozens of recent players on Switch that I encountered playing this game. I know the Thieves Guild, but how does the game decide who “matches”? I assume we’re put into an invisible lobby with other online players every time you’re on?

Honestly not sure if he or Mishima is dumber

I can't remember but when do the Mementos levels open up? Is it after Palace progression/completion or story progression? I just beat the 2nd palace and I'm trying to decide if I should go back in or wait till after the change of heart.

They don't open up until after the deadline occurs. So it's usually more worth your time to wait, depending on how often you want to head in there.

The space station boss is fucking brutal man. Have cruised through the entire game up until this point with zero deaths and have tried a solid hour to beat that fucking guy and just can’t do it. Super frustrating

Yeah, that boss fight is brutal. Some tips:
  • Exploit Baton Pass to the fullest possible
  • Use elemental items to create combo chains (this also helps with the previous point)
  • Have someone who knows Defense Debuffs on the party, because the last two stages go south since one of the minions is always buffed
Two other resources if you need help:
  • If you're just tired and want to say fuck it, this guide walks you through every single step necessary for the battle in nice detail
  • Counterintuitively, switching difficulty to Merciless for this boss can help too, since your weakness damage goes up by like 2x on that difficulty

This is a definite wall in Royal, especially if you're playing on Hard (specifically Hard, actually, not even Merciless as much). It's just not a very well-designed boss, and the margin for error is VERY narrow. It's doable, but for my Hard run I had to go for a very specific setup and items to beat it. Might be easier if you fuse the DLC personas but I stubbornly refused to do that. Basically what @Phantom Thief said!

How I feel when I'm about to start a palace and those two little shits come out to give more tutorials

seriously tho how do the police like not immediately figure out that these kids are the phantom thieves. like they are just hanging out at very public spaces and talking as loudly as possible about their plans. just one cop shadowing them and u figure it out. zero opsec over here.

I am not sure if this is improved later via confidants, but one of my nickpicks of the game is how demons level up. Unless they have a skill for it, the equipped one is the one that gets the exp.

Even if the police overhear them or suspect them nothing they do happens outside of the Metaverse so is very hard to track. This is addressed later to an extent.

I cleared that boss this morning. As kind of awful as it was, credit where it's due: I really had to do a deep dive in the Velvet Room and get specific about what sort of team I'd be bringing in to the fight. Didn't end up having to switch to Merciless but that's interesting that the high difficulty is actually sort of an asset in that fight!

Feels good to move onward into the fall semester. I played P5 back when it originally launched but have never played Royal until now. Seems like I have a fairly clear picture into where the new act might be going, will be exciting to see how it all ends up.

Yeah I actually really like that boss fight (which I know is an unpopular opinion) because it really forces you to engage with all the mechanics in the game. You have to give thought to party composition, you have to give thought to your Persona roster and their movesets, you have to engage with Baton Pass combos, you even have to give thought to Confidant abilities (the Star Arcana being leveled up can be a MASSIVE help in this fight) and item crafting (getting a bunch of elemental items with you in this fight can be a huge asset). It's an annoying fight, but it also forces you to really think about all the game's systems, in and out of combat.

I think if it wasn't a timed fight, there would be zero issues with it as is. It's just the time limit that makes it feel like it's a step too far.

The Spaceport boss fight was honestly overbuffed in one part compared to in the original version. For me that one huge issue ruins it:
The green MDL-GM bots wave is straight up too punishing because they have so much health and with all the buffs and debuffs the boss throws, you really need psy attack items and of course Haru. They either should’ve made it more than two turns before they flee and others are summoned or removed the turn limit like with the big robot. Because otherwise, it’s pretty alright and I like the bonus phase.

Ok.

25 hours into it.
One of the best video games ever made. This is a f***ing god tier JRPG in so many ways. There are simply staggering amount of things done right and even more things just to do.

Only negatives is that I can't actually play billiard or shogi. Those would have been awesome.
And as a weird non-negative but thing to mention is the blatant japanese sexist and racist culture, but that is something I really can't blame the game on.

Totally with him in that 540p undocked isn't a deal breaker, but certainly a tad disappointing after the long wait for the Switch version. This would look insane with native 720p on the Oled Switch. *drool*

I’m guessing they kept the resolution there because it’s kind of a battery hog? Like it’s not a super drain or anything but it’s faster on my OLED than some other games I’ve played

Usually I would be disappointed with 540p in handheld but thanks to the amazing UI and portraits being native resolution, it kinda hides the low resolution of the game to the point I keep forgetting it's blurry.

Still a solid port although it would be more ideal if it was native resolution.

I guess Drake whenever that comes out will fix these low resolution lol.

That’s the thing, most of the screen is UI elements. The 3D stuff being a lower resolution doesn’t detract much from this game.

Yeah, the resolution sacrifices were smart, no doubt about that. Still, the image being even sharper/clearer would obviously be nicer.

Game still feels right at home on Switch. God, I dread the P6 PS(5) only announcement.

Don't worry, at the rate we're going they won't announce it's PS5 exclusive until after the PS6 has already been revealed.

Apparently according to some posters on Era who got contacted by mods, P6 was supposed to be announced by now and they heard PS4/5 as platforms only.

P3 Remake is also a thing but no one knows if it's multiplatform lol.

A P3 remake happening right after they just announced modern ports to all systems of P3P would be... extremely weird? If I knew that a P3 remake was coming, I'd definitely hold off on playing the port, that's for sure.

That is one element that I've loved from the game, the menus and UI looks really nice (specially on the OLED) and for the most part you will be looking at the portraits rather than the 3D models.

So the game runs at 810p docked, which is at least an improvement over the original PS3 game.

I think one sentence from the description sums it up, there are no bad ports, its just lacking ambition. Seeing the graph comparing all ATLUS games on switch and SMTV has similar to higher res, but I dont think the UI is native like in P5R (I need to head back to that game).

Really? To me it feels like P5R is a lot easier on the battery compared to other games.

Before the announcement I was fine with not having Persona on the Switch since we had SMT, but I forgot how great it is playing Persona on a handheld. Despite both being turn-based RPGs with a shared library of demon designs neither is a substitute for the other and I love having both on the Switch.

Now it's time Atlus jumped into the SRPG train and bring back Devil Survivor.

So, perfectly in line with Atlus' overall "strategy", then!

If they really have a P3 remake and P6 both coming up and they decided to announce neither one during the giant, hyped, over-a-year-long anniversary event... yeah, that sounds like Atlus.

As a heads up, the mods explicitly said they can’t confirm the information given to them by the guy who claimed P6 is PlayStation exclusive.

Which isn’t to say that it won’t be, it might be that, but there’s no reason to assume that yet lol.

EDIT: fwiw, the other leaker (the guy who leaked the Switch/PC/Xbox/Game Pass ports, whom the mods confirmed for that leak) has leaked P3make for PC/PS/Xbox/Switch. Based on that I’d say the series is going to remain multiplatform for now. My assumption is P3make next year or thereabouts, P6 a few years down the line. P6 presumably doesn’t hit the Switch and goes for the successor instead.

200% expecting PS exclusivity at launch, and similar to now late ports of P6Proper to be multi-plat.
Everything else would be a surprise, to me at least.

I’ve said this elsewhere, but I don’t think there will be a need to fret if P6 is revealed as PS only. We know the SMT/Persona games have tended to have expanded rereleases a few years after launch. I can see that being the case for P6 and SMTV.

I think both the above games will be like the original P5 and remain stuck exclusively on their original consoles. That was likely in V’s contract, especially since NoE directly helped with the FIGS localization.

But SMTV Maniax/Redux/Apocalypse and P6 Shining (or whatever they call it) will be multiplat. I can see this as smart way to have the platform holders reduce the initial risk and costs of a brand new HD game these days. SMTVI will likely be exclusive to Drake, but again go everywhere with its expanded version.

And hopefully they give a DLC option. Even GF and Capcom are doing it with Pokemon and Monster Hunter.

This ultimately comes down to the nature of the expanded release. It it’s like FES or even Golden, I can definitely see DLC style upgrades offered. But if they’re going the Royal route again, where the new game is basically a full rewrite? You can’t do DLC even if you want then. I guess they can always offer a cheaper upgrade…

They COULD make it DLC, like... I guess add a "select Royal or Original" as an option when starting a new game, for example. But at that point, what's the real difference there between making it DLC versus just a separate game? It'll still probably be a full-price download either way.

Has there been any leaks for any new spinoffs? Would much rather have a 5 Arena or an Akechi spinoff or something rather than P3make

I also have doubts P6 will be Playstation exclusive. Much more likely to be multiplat, with Xbox having marketing like with 5R's ports.

Yeah at that point it's pretty useless as distinctions go.

Of course, I can just hope that they actually get things right on the first go next time so that the expanded P6 release doesn't need to be a full rewrite...
