StarTopic Bayonetta 3 | A Love-In With The Coven

Are there missable weapons in this? I came across a secret mission in chapter 6 that had me using a weapon I hadn’t seen yet. Have I just missed that or will it show up for me later in the game?

There is at least one weapon I found that can be easily missed:

You need to collect the three Umbran Tears on Chapter 3, afterwards an alternate chapter unlocks that will give you a new weapon if you beat it.

Just finished up my Bayo 2 replay... Balder's fate still makes me sad

Now I have to wait for my copy of 3 to arrive, fingers crossed on Monday or Tues. Have fun, guys 👍

Just finished Chapter 1 and I love this game already. I love how much more there is to explore & collect since the areas are more open. I know I’ll probably never 100% complete it, but the urge is strong to try.

I'm really curious how bayo 3 performs on over clocked switch V2. Hope someone tries soon. Would be cool to see how the fps and resolution holds up.
I'm pretty sure there's a video on YouTube of someone trying the game on an overclocked Switch. If I recall, the game still dips but it recovers frames faster.

Liking it a lot so far but it feels a little less smoth than Bayo 2? Idk if I am right it's been 8 years since I played it lol

Framerate was increased with CPU and GPU speed over clocks, but memory bandwith seemed to be the biggest issue. Not sure if anyone has ever been able to upclock the bandwidth on a v2 LPDDR4x.

I definitely agree that Bayo 2 has a nicer art style (it’s cleaner & more vibrant for sure) but some have said Bayo 3 is the worst looking in the franchise and I couldn’t disagree more. Bayo 1 is way more drab than this game.

I still think Bayo 3 looks very nice and I really only wish it was sharper, but I know we’ll get an enhanced version someday so I’m good with this for now. Also side note, the new design for Bayo has really grown on me. I think she looks fantastic. And the UI is a huuuge step up from past games.

Started the game today and i've played all of chapter 1.
It's bayonetta so what more can I say? The character's are still charming as hell and the game goes crazy from the start.
I can understand some criticism on the graphic department since the game is less vibrant and colourful than bayo 2 (which was such a gorgeous game) but I think it was kind of overblown, the game still looks good. My biggest graphical pet peeve are probably the faces, they're a bit too realistic and uncanny for my liking (also the extras in the prologue looked horrendous)
The soundtrack is already phenomenal and they even brought the chants from astral chain for the homunculi.
Right now I'm having a blast and I can't believe how smooth switch between normal and demon slave attacks is. Also so far I haven't noticed any performance issues but it's early in the game so I'll judge when I've played more.
Right now this bayonetta 3 and since bayonetta is awesome so is this game.

I have noticed that waking the console from sleep mode during a cutscene causes audio sync issues

I actually prefer the art direction of this game over the previous two. It starts off pretty drab in terms of locations but it quickly comes into its own. I especially enjoyed the third multiverse you explore. The game has the most variance of any Bayonetta entry. B2 might've had more density but much of its look was pretty same-y, and it was already pretty similar to the first game.

So, I’m only like one hour into the game because I had to go to work but here are my gut reaction impressions:

1. Bayonetta is freaking adorable in this game. I mean, I always thought she was cute but this game amps her up to a whole new level. Her new design absolutely kills me and I love her to death.

2. Jennifer Hale’s portrayal for Bayo is INSANELY good - like sounds nearly identical and even a little better IMO!

3. The muuuuuusic!!!!

4. The humor!!

5. AHHHHHH!!!!

ITS JUST ALREADY SO GOOD AHH

The smoke around the city stages is just insanely low resolution and ugly. Probably some of the most ugly graphics I’ve seen on my current TV, not going to lie.

Loving the game so far but, yeah, it’s interesting how the environments having to account for hardcore giant kauji battles means the up-close stuff can be really ugly looking.

After playing a bit into Chapter 4, I definitely think it comes into its own quickly as well. This feels like the most ambitious Bayonetta by far in terms of what it offers and what it’s trying to achieve, and there are definitely consolations for that but I think it really works overall.

Chapter 3 is so fucking wild, I love it.

Beat the game.
So, Bayonetta in 1 and 2 are now different Bayonettas. Lol, alright. What a mess :D

How do you get the Umbran tears anyway? Yeah you need them from the animals, but they always seem to run away

You have to catch them. Some are in weird spots, but others usually there is a minor puzzle/thinking involved with cutting off their escape somehow. Some are environmental, others you just need to choose a different route than them. Butterfly mode gives you a lot of speed.

Okay just finished Chapter 3 and holy guacamole that was awesome.

The full blown totally-not-Godzilla battle and rocket-roller-skates-spider-Bayo were unbelievably cool. The latter espectially got me grinning like Cheshire, as a big Godzilla fan.

I've played through the end of Chapter 2 and wow. . .

Having recently played through the first two Bayonetta games, you can tell they really upped the spectacle and everything else a few notches. I know some people are unsure about the Demon Slave stuff, but having played around with it now, I'm really happy they added this element to differentiate this game from the first two combat wise. Being able to explode the Demons onto the field out of nowhere for a hit or two then reconnect with a combo from Bayonetta herself feels great, looks really cool, and also feels like a more streamlined version of some stuff you could do in Astral Chain. I'm quite impressed so far.

I stopped after Viola’s first chapter today. Not a big fan so far of the character or her gameplay. Curious how the latter evolves over the story though and there are some amusing bits already with summoning Chesire and fighting barehanded. I’m sure I’ll get better at her counter and sword throwing too as I play more.

I’m glad this game is trying new things, but most of the bigger new gameplay stuff I’m not super into. The quieter stuff, new weapons, movement, puzzles, etc., I’ve been digging a lot though. The setpieces and cutscenes have been especially amazing. Also I really like the new Bayonetta, both the character and the design.

Excited to play more tomorrow!

I finished the game.

So I loved everything about this. I think it's my favorite in the series. That being said... Viola taking over as Bayonetta is a tough pill to swallow. She was my least favorite character throughout the game.

Also, it sounds like Bayonetta 4 has already been greenlit by Nintendo? I can't imagine they would have it say "to be continued" if they weren't sure.

I am no completist but I am always a bit annoyed when I start a verse and notice I skipped one. I wish there were a way to go back, but the game always locks the path behind you.

Anyway, I am up to Chapter 3 and loving it.

I really hope you will somehow be able to play this game at 1080/60 on the next Switch because no other game demands it more than this one. Performance is fine for a normal playthrough but for later stuff like Rodin better performance is almost essential.

The game is gobsmacking amazing. A game I will come back to for years to come.

...And once again I'm stuck on the menus for hours cause the music is to die for. 😩

Prologue done, it may take me a bit to get a handle on the Demon Slave stuff, but I'm already in love. Bayo's back, baby, and she hasn't missed a beat!

You guys aren't ready for Chapter 12. This is probably what brought the game from an 7 to an 8-9 for most people. Simply outrageous

The game arrived today and I played the first chapters (left it after the 1st Jeanne section).

It's really good and crazy, combat feels nice and the new enemies are fun. I agree that at least the first areas look kind of boring, but let's see where the game goes.

About the performance/visuals, I agree that the game has inconsistent framerate, but I don't think it looks really blurry, and I recently finished the Plague Tale game at 4K. In fact I expected to be something like Xc3, but it looks far more cleaner and make me wish that Xc3 had a no AA mode, because it really destroys image clarity in the game.

This seems like something that would fit well with and be appreciated in this thread.

Platinum began putting the prototype together for Bayonetta 3 -- Switch ports of the first two games were already planned -- after Scalebound's cancelation. It seems a safe guess that side of the concepts were inspired from that project.

Kamiya is greatly thankful to Nintendo for making this title a reality, as are action and Platinum fans everywhere.

Here's to the healthy continuation of the Nintendo-Platinum relationship and to whatever brilliant projects are yet to come from it.

Okay, so, just got to play as Viola for the first time, and I’m doing the first hidden verse or whatever you call them where you can only do damage in Witch Time…and I don’t fucking understand how I’m supposed to do this?? Either I’m missing something here, or playing as Viola is a lot less forgiving than playing as Bayonetta… Like, the window for activating Witch Time via blocking with Viola seems WAY more narrow than dodging with Bayonetta, and when I do manage to activate Witch Time, it doesn’t even stay active long enough for me to do much of anything… Sometimes it seems to stay active longer, but I can’t figure out what causes that. Can someone please tell me what I’m doing wrong here?? I was having a blast with the game until this point…

It’s a tricky narrow window for longer witch time, using Chesire for damage regardless helps a ton.

wait a minute, are there side chapters for each chapter if you find every animal or is it just for some chapter?

Yeah I only played as Viola in Chapter 5 so far, but I’m not sure how to feel about her. The blocking is definitely not as forgiving or satisfying as dodging with Bayonetta, and overall it all just feels a lot less graceful/spectacular. Like I feel like fighting with Bayonetta is like dancing and it looks extravagant, whereas fighting with Viola isn’t like that as much, but I’m sure that was intentional because they’re very different characters.

I think I like it enough, but I definitely choose Bayonetta whenever I can.

There's a side chapter for each chapter not verse

I learned watching someone stream this that there are optional weapon unlocks tied to the side chapters too

I managed to beat it after awhile, but damn, that window is way too narrow… Makes Viola a lot less fun to play as, honestly. =/

Also, it doesn’t help that I didn’t realize until recently that the skill tree screen has multiple pages for each character and demon… Here I’ve been loading up all my Witch Hearts and Moon Pearls on Bayonetta, with none put on Viola at all. ._. Hopefully that doesn’t end up fucking me over later on… I had 8 Witch Hearts and 7 Moon Pearls on Bayonetta before I realized…

Some of these zones are huge and dense for collectible hunting. The start of chapter 8 has like 20+ things to grab in one, very big spot, it’s wild. I know you don’t have to leave the main path, but I have to lol. Mixing powers to get some of them (I use the butterfly and spider the most) is pretty cool.

I'm loving the game, but I'm starting to see some things that will be a pain when replaying it:

  • Viola's scene walking in the desert...I hate when games just ask you to press forward and do nothing else.
  • Bayonetta's scenes where, again, she just walks forward while talking. The desert has one of these as well.
  • The sand mechanic in the desert is very obnoxious, a complete waste of time.

Apart from that I love how big levels are, how much there is to explore and how the game is not just "fight in arena A, walk through a tunnel, fight in arena B". That was my biggest criticism of DMCV, but Bayo3 blows it out of the water in level design. I like the small puzzles where you need to use the demons and the challenges that require you to use Demon Masquerade.
I specially like the verticality of the levels and how you are often rewarded by reaching the top of a tower or other structure that is out of the way. And I LOVE that there seems to be no special verses that activate behind you when you complete a hidden condition somewhere in the level; I hated having to backtrack after every verse to the start of the chapter just to check if an Alfheim portal had materialized out of nothing in Bayo1 (can't remember now if this also happened in 2).

One small nitpick is that the sometimes the levels don't seem to be prepared to accomodate all of your movement options. In Mario Odyssey you could go anywhere and you would find a secret moon, or a pile of coins and you would never be limited by an invisible wall or anything similar, but in Bayo3 sometimes you'll get somewhere where you aren't supposed to be and there is no collision for a platform, or an invisible wall just won't let you move. It's a bit frustrating because sometimes you're not sure if you missed the jump, or it's that an invisible wall is just preventing you from doing it and it can also discourage exploration as you may discard some places thinking that they're too out of the way.

Combat is amazing, I'm trying to incorporate Demons and their full moveset more in my basic combos besides Wink Slave. I'm currently restricting myself to the guns and yo-yos so I can master all of their combos instead of just mashing different combinations of P and K and trying to mix different demons and their special attacks. I love how Platinum has added additional layers of complexity to the basic combat actions, so you can level up little by little as you incorporate more advanced tactics into your playstyle. I would've loved to have an additional weapon set C to switch into during combat, though it's true that with all the moves+combos each weapons has, plus the Demon's movesets you have no shortage of options. BTW, it would've been great if you had to complete small missions to unlock new moves, like in Doom, or like you have to hit 10 enemies with certain Demon's moves to unlock the more powerful versions. A lot of times I'm going into the skill upgrade page and unlocking more things at once than I'm able to keep track of.
