Discussion EA and Koei Tecmo announce "the next great Hunting Game" (UPDATE: WILD HEARTS, Out February 17th 2023, Xbox/PlayStation/PC)

Not even coming to last gen, that rules out Steam deck compatibility. Smh, there's a Toukiden sequel is coming out and I'm not able to play it.

Let's see how this will play out for Koei, to "move on" from Nintendo.
Toukiden was never on Switch in the first place.

That doesn't make sense. I mean, there are PS5 developed games like Returnal that will be compatible with the Steam deck (SteamDB leak) once it's out and Spidey Remastered was mainly developed for PS5 despite having a PS4 version and is Deck compatible.

Well, there are some big changes going on over there. I really hope to see this continues to be true, but we have to wait until they reveal their next non-Nintendo funded Switch game.
When you say big changes, are you referring to their recent announcements or more of a higher up situation? In terms of their support Gust and Omega Force are a given (even Ruby Party). The only team would be Team Ninja, whose last game (not counting the NG collection) was Ultimate Alliance, a funded switch game.

It was a handheld game though, I should have added handhelds there. They moved the series from there to home consoles. Imo, hunting games and any other long games are best played on handhelds but I wanna see how this will pay out for Koei.

Returnal steam hasn't been released yet, but are there any other current gen only games running on Deck at acceptable performance? If so, maybe this has a chance.

Yeah, it seems they have decided to give big budget releases a chance. Hard to predict what their future hold, but yes, Switch will never lose Gust support.

It hasn't but someone who is playtesting the game on Steam leaked the entry to SteamDB so you can see the game being updated constantly.

The Steam Deck compatibility leaked here: https://steamdb.info/app/1649240/history/?changeid=15525623

I don't have a Deck, but Spidey Remastered which was mainly developed for PS5 plays apparently fantastic on the Deck.

Unless I'm mistaken, Toukiden 1&2 had Sony funding because they were trying to foster new hunting games on Sony platforms after Monster Hunter went to the 3DS.

I'm still not seeing the change here. Omega Force never really had allegiance with anyone, especially Nintendo, outside funded games.

Oh yeah I can see that. I think they want to do the Capcom approach, they want to dip in the AAA western market, and they want to experiment with their engine in different genres (I dont know if the engine of WH is their own). Some of their engines are a bit outdated so this might given them a chance to polish.

However, one advantage KT has over Capcom is that their teams are huge and they all have multiple projects in dev. And their approach with Nintendo is visible in all this AAA ventures given that they are in collabs (EA for WH and Sony for Ronin) so at the very least they wont lost money.

Trailer certainly was ... interesting. I really like the monster designs, but this tool box thingy looks a bit off to me so far. I'm curious as to how smoothly this will integrate into the flow of battle in the final game.
The narrative set-up did nothing for me, but that's alright, as long as it doesn't get in the way and is merely used as a tool to get me to hunt these beasts. Games like these obviously are all about the fights themselves, so if those are good, everything will be fine, haha.

I think I would have believed you if you told me this was the next Monster Hunter.

I do like what I've seen, with one exception: the camera in combination with how big the enemy is. Seems like a recipe for hectic and frustrating battles.

I'm very interested. Kinda crazy to see such a great looking omega force game (not counting AoC). The building stuff looks to be simple and just aids in positioning, which is fine by me. Just waiting on impressions to drop

Thinking about picking this up. That art direction is just too strong, and it's giving me major princess mononoke / annihilation vibes.

It looks cool but come on, this $90 (Canadian) price for this is absurd. And it's EA published so you know it'll be $50 by April, plus be fixed up a bunch from a probably janky release, so that will be the time to check it out.

I wanna try it, but it won't be for a while. Too many new good looking games, so little time...
Agree. February itself has Ishin! remake, Final Bar Line, Octopath II, Wild Hearts, Company of Heroes III, Kirby port, Symphonia port, Wanted: Dead, Returnal pc, Labyrinth of Galleria, and more within 2 weeks. Wild!

Waiting on reviews but I’ll likely stick it on my list of home console games I’ll get around to one day if I pick one up again.

Anyone here planning on getting Wild Hearts?
I'm waiting for reviews, the development team doesn't give me much hope. I thought it was the Nioh team so I was ready, but Dynasty Warriors..a big part of MonHun is the feel, and weight. Dynasty Warriors, imo, lacks both.

Omega Force also made Toukiden, which was not only one of the better MH clones from a generation ago, Wild Hearts looks to be a nice "spiritual successor" to.

So, time will tell, but I would definitely look into Toukiden as an idea for what else the team is capable of.

Somehow I missed that, well I'm dumb. Apologies.

Toukiden was pretty good. So hopes not deleted.

Speaking of Toukiden...those games had some really fun, inspired weapons. Glad Omega Force remembered, too.

Previews are live now it seems alongside starter guides and impressions:

Seen any more?

Seeing some glowing impressions/comments from key Monster Hunter speedrunners, and that's all I needed. Pre-ordered

When can i change weapons? Firced to use a weapon i dont care about even after the tutorial area isnt endearing me to buy the game.

Also does target locking not work?

You can change to some weapons after you beat the first large enemy. For me Target Locking when changed to press off of Hold still requires me to hold.

The weapon loops so far are cool. Using Katakuri with melee feels nice and a bit clunky with ranged. Its early levels, but feels like an easier MH game atm. That being said there are some things in the loop I don't understand. Like for bow I don't know why I would ever not power up my vertical attack when wanting to explode the arrows; I don't see the point yet in non-powered up verticals.

Amazing game so far on PS5, but the PC version sucks on my laptop! I will try on Xbox tomorrow. I love this EA trial.

FYI, someone over on ResetEra posted a seemingly helpful workaround for the PC version (in the PC performance thread), helping with some of the framerate inconsistency and stuttering. Seems like the stuttering is caused both by asset loading instances as well as the all too well known by now shader compilation. Yay

Really got into Monster Hunter Rise last year so consider my curiosity about Wild Hearts piqued. How do their gameplay styles compare? And hopefully ACG reviews it haha

They are pretty different imo. For starters, Wild Hearts seems easier as you can revive ppl in multuplayer. The weapons in WH I have looked at far seem to have different type of gameplay loops compared to rise. For example, Long Sword in WH you build up a meter in order to use the the weapon into a whip sword for a period of time. Bow, you do a bunch of horizontal shots that stick into the enemy and then you either do a Katakuri attack with the bow or you use a power up vertical shot to explode the arrows stuck in the monster.

Upgrading wise, I don't know fully as I don't have the full game but it looks like you have 1 skill tree that you can't reset. Where you go on the skill tree determines what your weapon evolves into. It can gain or lose abilities depending on where you go. I think you can sometimes inherit some of the previous abiilities one of your weapons had on the skill tree similar to Persona. For a made-up example, if you have a Water Bow that has an ability that increases your dodge and you decide to turn your Water Bow into a Lightning Bow on the skill tree, you would normally lose the Dodge ability the Water Bow gives. But I think there is an option for your to transfer the Dodge ability to the Lightning Bow if you so choose. If you don't like a weapon skill tree you did, if looks like you have to forge a new weapon, I could be wrong though, as again, I only played the trial.

The monsters are fun. I have noticed when fighting the Tusk, when huge burst damage occurs on him, he almost immediatley runs to another area. This may be a glitch fixed in Day 1 patch...but if not, I did not like chasing a monster to different areas that was almost deadd 6 times in a row.

The story progression is also better than MH. Ideally, future MH have this as well.

Of the MH-Clones, I have looked into. This is the best one so far, at least in the opening areas I have played.

That would be a plus, since I'd ideally want a different feeling playstyle.

Hmmm I'm not too sure about this aspect though.

Would you say the animations and tells are in the same league as Monster Hunter's?

Oh well I don't really pay attention to the story, so

That's definitely encouraging to hear.

Would you say the animations and tells are in the same league as Monster Hunter's?

Hard to say. It has decent tells so far but to the level of MH, I would tentatively say no based on the 3 monsters I fought. They do have solid tells though and the game wants you to notice them and use your Katakuri. The Big Tusk has a very obvious tell where he will power rev up for a bit and then charge at you. You have enough time to dodge the charge attack, but his attack covers a wide area and is elongated. You would have to dodge spam (using alot of stamina) and you still might get hit. Your best option, is usally to build six Katakuri while he is charging up. The six katakuri will turn into a door that he will slam into and get a KO effect similar to MH.

I'm not technically savy enough to know for sure, but feels like optimisation. Constant stutters, framepacing, etc.

The PS5 controller features are really well implemented in this. Shame they didn't add those for the PC version. Hoping VRR on Xbox helps with the drops in the village.

Did you have any success trying to improve performance on PC?

IDK if I joined a Series S or PC game in crossplay but the performance was beyond brutal and was very intersting seeing the river change different shades of blue every few steps.

I'm leaning towards getting the game but MAN the performance is so disappointing.
