• Hey everyone, staff have documented a list of banned content and subject matter that we feel are not consistent with site values, and don't make sense to host discussion of on Famiboards. This list (and the relevant reasoning per item) is viewable here.

News VGDunkey announces Bigmode, an indie game publishing label

The targets of his slurs do not owe him forgiveness.

No one's calling for banning discussion of him here either, you're just being weirdly defensive of someone who you claim to watch 'semi regularly'.

I watch a lot of his content, content that I think has gotten much worse over time, my point in pointing that out is that I actually have not really noticed that sort of discussion out of him in any of the videos I've watched since, I guess 2017? That's when I began watching any of his content anyways, the BOTW video was my first exposure and he hasn't really come off as a bigot, but if people are upset about things he's done that's fine, I'm just curious what the end goal would be, if any. Also, I could feel entirely mortified by an action I did, but I'd be concerned about how I pivot, I've seen a lot of apologies either sincere or hollow get eviscerated, but if you feel that would make people look at him with more forgiveness, that's fair too.

I've literally never once met a person who came from an American impoverished situation be offended by that word or using it to describe something that is undesirable, I'd be curious to know where you stand in terms of your upbringing if you're going to decide to be the one who signals for them though, because you'd be the first person I've met who grew up around gang violence and poverty who then also got upset about using that word, and I'm serious when I say that, I'd be amazed. You very much come off as someone who is just trying to be the offense sacrifice for everyone, even the people who actually don't care, I certainly have no issues with the word and I lived through it a lot worse than likely most of the people here in that sense. I appreciate trying to help course correct humanity at points, but this is reaching pretty low I'd say considering.
“You very much come off as someone who is just trying to be the offense sacrifice for everyone”…what? What does that even mean?

You know, in a friendly discussion, when you use a word that has a metric shit-ton of classist and “racially charged” baggage, and someone else notes that they don’t appreciate you using that word, you can just…not use that word. Not try to challenge them into some sort of poverty-off to see who has the right to say whether it’s okay to say or not.

I’ve been pretty open about my past struggles to people here and on other forums who are actually my friends. I’m not going to just open up about it to you just because you’re “curious to know where you stand in terms of your upbringing” because you’re trying to win some sort of internet debate. Fuck that noise.

Well I'm sorry if the word offended you then, as someone who grow up with abusive parents and no money, as well as people of all sorts in a trailer park, it has never once come up until today. Most of us came out of the situation (if we did) with some sense of humor or pride about it, rather than anguish.
Oh, fuck off. Sorry for not having trauma the right way.

Oh, that's cool, you're apologizing not because you realized you offended someone, but because it offended them and not even learning about why the word is a problem. You seem like a cool person.

I won't take offense to a word that applies to me and does not offend me no, but I can also feel sorry if the use of the word did hurt someone else's feelings, is that unusual? Am I expected to suddenly now also be hurt by the word? It's a word that applies to my life situation, and I have no shame about that.

No one is asking for you to be hurt by it, just to understand why its a shitty and offensive word to use to describe video games. It's called sympathy you absolute dipshit.

Can someone tell me what the LGBT community's end goal with Dunky is

Asking for a friend
once people get cancelled they are disintegrated and sent to the Rainbow Realm, where their tortured screams power our fabulousness

I'm sorry, but a word that historically used to demonize BIPOC individuals and you're using it freely, and when someone took issue with you using it, you seemingly jumped down their throat, which they also called you out for doing so, and then you seemingly are defending it, right here, right now, how it doesn't bother you and suggesting you want to keep using this word.

It's like telling me how the r-slur doesn't bother them and using it freely, when historically it has actively been used to demonize and harm communities who do not fit into neurotypical spaces.

Like, absolutely stop with this stuff and listen to us when we explain to you why this is a serious issue. Both your usage of the word and Dunkey's problematic history.

It's a word I use commonly in my day to day and has applied quite literally to my existence, so it impacting you is sad and I did apologize, but I myself do not feel shame in the word no, because up to my adult years it wasn't even expected I'd survive long enough to get anywhere. Most would consider my childhood traumatic, but I also don't personally choose to be a victim by it and try to make light of it as a typical coping mechanism, as many do, if that's unusual here then I'm not really sure how I can even communicate further, everyone here seems very extreme in how they handle matters and can never just talk like normal human beings.

Well, if there was ever a post to explain why you're defending someone who actively has a history of problematic behaviors, this is the post.

Well, if there was ever a post to explain why you're defending someone who actively has a history of problematic behaviors, this is the post.

That would be disregarding literally all I've said, if this particular Youtuber was currently still doing anything that was sexist, homophobic, transphobic, racist, etc, I would see no issue in disregarding him entirely and even not allowing discourse, it's why I've asked if he's still as such, or is this just something that has to be discussed every time, why not just ban discussion on him at that point?

With regard to Dunkey; I just really don't think it's a good look to never apologize for something like this, continue to behave in the exact same irony-poisoned manner you always have, and to come at any topic with an air of smugly condescending superiority despite having been problematic in these ways, like he 'knows better' than other people. It does not inspire confidence in me that he has really internalized those problematic roots, it's simply been swept under the rug. At best I feel like that pattern of behavior comes across as fairly oblivious, on his part, which is not a great look for someone who is wanting to help manage the future livelihoods of other creatives. At worst... yeah, it's bad.

I'm not sure what it would take to 'make things right', but I can tell you that doing more than literally nothing would be a good start for a lot of people.

If you don't see the irony with this and how you used a harmful word, by your own words, "day-to-day", I don't know what else to tell you.

It's absolutely admirable to want to highlight and aid indie development, but dunkey ain't it. His problematic past has been covered well by others here, but even his recent video covering the Sony State of Play and Nintendo Direct was filled with his shitty opinions. He goofed on the amount of farming games announced — which, yeah, was a lot — using language that attempted to draw a line in the sand between "real gamer games" (like God of War) and "not real gamer games" (like said farming games). It's the same language and discourse that has been used by shitty men to gatekeep women from the hobby, and it's not lost on me that the audience for farming games tends to lean female (at least more than the traditional AAA games that Sony highlighted).

That's dunkey's modus operandi though. He does occasionally come through with insight, like his Last of Us 2 videos, but it's often bookended with dog whistles that echo the worst dregs of the internet.

Him throwing shade at Frog Detective was also such a weird move in this video. To show it for half a second and call it spam is an absolutely wild way to start an ostensibly professional internet venture.

Yeah. I don’t know what it’s like in the video game industry but in every publishing industry I’ve been a part of, the #1 rule is don’t knock each other’s shit. You always always always praise your competitors’ successes for helping to expand the audience/readership/hobby, and if they have a flop or a disappointment you don’t mention it publicly at all. (This is why things like the Sony Pictures hack are so juicy; none of those people would ever tweet out any of that hot goss but of course internally it’s a different story.) I suspect it’s the same thing in games. Word gets around. People move around.

An odd thing new authors do sometimes, when they pitch agents, is shit on other people’s books. This is especially odd because the books they criticize are basically always books that are enormously popular and major successes for the publishers and agents that invested in them; nobody makes a passing snipe at an obscure novel they don’t expect the agent to have ever heard of. That’s…sort of what that “spam game” comment felt like, to me? Some sort of weird insecure bravado?

Dunkey is the last person I would want to decide what games get published. jrpgs, farming sims and others won't even get a chance because of how much he hates them and keeps saying how bad they are. Then the whole "i played alot of games so I know what makes a good game" is such a bad reason for thinking you know what makes a game good, especially when you dismiss entire genres and keep saying they're bad.

Wait was he involved in this game or the promotion of it or something? I've avoided buying this based on how the team carried themselves but I didn't know Dunkey had anything to do with it.
No no no, my post was in response to the user who thinks that because dunkey will now publish games, he will stop using bad « jokes » and questionnable « slurs ». So as an example, I showed what 3D Realms did with Ion Fury, their new « Duke Nukem 3D ».

It sucks BTW because I loved Ion Fury’ early demo and the game itself is pretty good (maybe the levels are way too big for their own sake). I even have it on Switch, found out just after.

For Bigmode's sake I hope Dunkey is putting on a persona when doing his videos, because if he's bringing that mindset to his publishing business a lot of people will be hurt. Plenty of inflammable and toxic leadership in the gaming industry, we don't need more.

Yeah, he's gonna miss out on great games simply because they don't adhere to his specific (very fluctuating) tastes, Frog Detective being one. You have to be able to respect the craft and see the appeal over the boundaries of your own preferences. also he was knocking frog games last month and now his company has a frog logo...?

Even putting aside Dunkey's history of slurs and toxicity, that whole video just rubbed me the wrong way. He's so irony-poisoned it's impossible to tell if this is all some big joke or not.

Not really impressed.
