Pre-Release Fire Emblem Engage — Pre-release Discussion Thread

Not open for further replies.
So, been rewatching the trailer several times and I’m ready to preorder, unless I see or know something that I don’t like.

Pros:
Looks good in therm of graphics
Like the animations
Like the music
It’s a new Fire Emblem

Cons:
Characters designs. To me, a downgrade from TH.
The story I could get from the trailer.

Waiting to see more in the future before release.

Hey, she's coming out on my birthday, I'm legally required to front Pepsi-chan.

What I'm really curious about is if the 12 on the stained glass thing is the full "Heroes" roster. I feel at the very least there has to be game-specific DLC for characters like Ephraim/Seliph/Edelgard

It's so weird. In Zumaddy's profile pic above, the female MC's face looks fine - but in the Twitter clip on the previous page, I think it looks awful.

I think it's the eyes. The female characters have ENORMOUS eyes - like, even bigger than normally 'big' female character anime eyes. The male MC's face looks significantly better.

The female MC and the two kids in the clip also have face shapes I'm not big on. I think its the cheeks - or maybe the chins? They're kinda... chubby looking? I dunno. Again, it's not present in Zumaddy's profile pic, so maybe it's just an angle thing?

I do like the two other character's clothes, though.

Clip of female and male Alear waking up from their lil nap. Nothing too interesting, but we do get our first taste of new music!

Eh, something about this artstyle is too much. Like it's gone into Atelier Ryza level generic big eye anime where everyone looks baby cute, even the adults. They're all "pretty". The gameplay looks good though. A huge step up presentation wise from Three Houses

Edit: That boxart is also a mess. If it didn't have the name Fire Emblem on it or Marth's outfit on the blue haired character, no way would anyone look at it and think it is even close to FE. The artstyle is oversaturated and bland. Though it's been heading this way for the past like 6 years.

The cutscenes at least look much better than FETH. It's visually clean and doesn't look cheap

for me it's just the color scheme. an absolute crime. there's probably some story reason, but there's nothing to justify how ugly the color usage is

Absolutely hate the character design but the gameplay looks great, I'm in, if the moe isn't too prevalent, I might sit out otherwise (and 3H is easily top 5 games of all time for me)

I really like this. The art and animation just looks much better than TH in every regard.

The only thing I am kinda meh on so far is the story...... but we were all meh on the story after the first TH trailer as well, so staying optimistic!

After rewatching the trailer, I am even more excited to play this new entry.

I still need to squeeze in an Edelgard playthrough on 3H.

Well we don't really know much about the story from this, just the very basic premise. Which, yeah, an ancient evil that was sealed reawakening is pretty cliche, but it's really all in the execution and the characters and how it plays out. Like you said, Three Houses's plot wasn't all that great either on paper or at first look (although I loved the end bits of Golden Deer) but it was the characters and their interactions and how they played off each other that really made it sing to me. That and just a super addicting gameplay loop. So I'm pretty optimistic here as well!

I like how even this tiny cutscene managed to already pull me into the story!

So even if I feel like the female characters suffer from same face syndrome, I think the quality of the game itself will make up for it!

The jp VA are:
- Aya Endo (ex. Saki from Shinsekai Yori, the Shoko Iieri (doctor lady) from Jujutsu Kaisen

- Hiro Shimono (ex. Connie Springer from Attack on Titan, Dabi from My Hero Academia)

I was expecting a deeper/cooler voice for Alear tbh. XD
I'll need to relisten to the trailer again but I heard other recognizable va's in there too!

I cannot shake the feeling of male Alear has Rex (Xenoblade 2) voice…..

I wouldn’t be surprised if 12 is the base roster of summons, mostly as 12 is often the full size of a deployed force for battle in Fire Emblem (once you’re had the full cast join you).

I like Pepsi-chan's design, it's the only common complaint I don't share with people who are sceptical of this game haha. Her hair reminds me of Ryuuko Matoi from Kill la Kill, and the lords' attire isn't as off-putting as the Byleths'.

I thought they did the crossover concept as best as they're ever gonna do it in Awakening (and obviously Heroes) and Tokyo Mirage Sessions, I'm over it as an idea personally regardless of how it's executed. A lot of the lords lose their lustre out of the context of the events that happen to them and that they lead their army through.

My partner and I are playing through Three Houses again right now and one thing I love about it compared to other entries is how everything in the game feels so expressive and full of life. The interface absolutely pops with the style and mood of the game. Furthermore, even the 'sillier' aspects of the game that had people nervous before 3H came out (tea parties, school setting...) are tied together by something distinctive and more traditional (the monastery, the church, the lore on the different tea blends, the little intros for each moon). I actually feel like this is weirdly bland-looking (interface etc.) despite having this super over-the-top theming, and I'm hoping the mood of it will be easier to get into when I'm actually playing it. I hope it will feel like its own game and not, uh, all the other JRPGs that come to mind visually. I'm also hoping the trailer very much overemphasised the nostalgiabait and the game stands better on its own merits.

That being said, I am hopeful that the smaller maps/movement ranges will lead to more interesting and focused map design (while there have been plenty of interesting larger maps in the FE series and also different design approaches like in Genealogy, a lot of entries with bigger maps waste that space to say the least). One of the worst-written and most ill-conceived FEs is also one of the most fun to play strategically (Conquest), so I can't dismiss this game despite being probably the least interested in it I've been in an FE announcement in 12+ years. If IntSys can continue putting out good FEs (including the hoped-for Genealogy remake) more often then this wouldn't be so disappointing, I don't think.

Some of the choices for the past heroes/lords were confusing a bit, just as some of them are flat out missing in that mural art, like Seliph (who takes over as the main lord in Holy War's second half). Also using Lucina over Chrom (the lord char) or Robin (the main char).

If they tried to vary up the summons, there were also other picks that could've been better. Like for Sacred Stones, they could've gone with Ephraim instead of Eirika, who's using a lance instead of swords. Or for Blazing Blade Hector instead of Lyn to have another axe user.

Basing Ike on the Fire Emblem Heroes alternative version where he dons his dad's clothes and axe is also kinda funny. Context: Ike was only able to use Urvan (the axe) in the Radiant Dawn late game, not in Path of Radiance.
Same applies for Lucina using a bow, that must come directly from Heroes too, as her Legendary alternative version uses a bow there. Going with the default classes from Awakening, Lucina wasn't even able to use bows as a Great Lord nor in her base Lord class.

I wonder if the likes of Hector, Eliwood, Alm and so on are still in the game as summons and that the mural only shows the "main" characters ... though that is already false by using Lucina for Awakening.

They're probably just focusing on the popular lords for now. Guess we know what all those Fire Emblem Heroes polls were for.

I'm getting flashbacks to the discussions around the first Fire Emblem Warriors where the devs said, "you can't have all the Lords in one game because they all use swords soz." They're probably mixing up their weapons for gameplay reasons, e.g they need an axe wielding summon so they assigned that role to Ike.

There's definitely scope for them to expand the number of summons via DLC if they want. We all know a Three Houses summon pack would probably sell gazillions.

One Three Houses summon pack? How about three? School phase House Lords, Post-Timeskip House Lords, Three Hopes House Lords. ;D

+ A gatekeeper summons pack. You put on the ring mid battle, out floats his spectral phantom, he emits a rousing battlecry of 'Nothing to report' the enemy takes 100 meme damage.

It's hard to say. Ephraim was slightly more popular than his sister on FEH CYL polls. And female Byleth was way more popular than male Byleth (although both were clearly outclassed by Edelgard, Dimitri and Claude). Also, Seliph kinda placed better during the last three polls, even though his father was ahead of him before that. It feels like they needed more female representation, but they didn't want to go for both avatar characters being female, so they used female Corrin and male Byleth. But that is just a guess.

Watching the trailer again and I just can not get over how much I dislike the character designs here, especially the female characters. Three Houses had its faults and wasn’t perfect in that regard but this feels like such a massive step back.

Yeah in the interest of gender balance I can see why Eirika got the nod over her brother. Female Corrin seems to be the default for the character now (outside of Smash at least), and Lucina remains the most popular of the Awakening cast so they make sense (and if the game revolves around defeating a fell dragon then it's kinda thematic she gets the nod). Celica, Lyn and Micaiah's inclusion was to be expected. So really it's just Byleth where they had to make a call which gender to pick, and there it seems like they're still struggling to make a definitive call on the default option for the character. I'd thought with Three Hopes treating Female Byleth as the focus in all it's marketing - even appearing on the boxart - that they'd seemingly made their choice, but clearly not lol.

I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure all the big names will make it in as summons somehow. They're clearly treating this as a big celebration of all things Fire Emblem, so fingers crossed they cram in as much as they can.

I'm a big fan of the character designs in general but I'm actually surprised at how much I love the male mc's design. I think it's fantastic.

I really liked what I saw but all I see online is how much everyone hates the protagonists design, to the point of hating on the artist in their quote retweets saying they should never design characters again. Hate this fanbase sometimes.

Anyways Three Houses is one of my favorite games ever, so I’m here day one, though I wouldn’t be surprised if the story is really dumb with all of the character summoning.

The game also looks a lot better than Three Houses. Looks cleaner and simpler. I like it, it works.

As for gameplay the weapon triangle is apparently back and battalions are gone. Wonder if combat arts return? I think people that felt that Three Houses gameplay steered too far from the norm will like this better.

The collection of the rings is apparently of plot importance, so while there could be DLC in that vein, I could just as easily see there not being ring DLC.

Btw. Whoever finds that CE for preorder on Amazon.de, Media Markt or Saturn and gives me a heads-up gets a virtual hug and cookie (not the browser ones).

Since it’s releasing so close. I’m sure we’ll get dev updates soon.

Probably a few trailers in the holidays

It is pretty funny that after all of the rumors of Gust Emblem that Gust doesn't appear involved beyond maybe a development support role at most.
The rumor was always that it was the same team as 3H (IS and the Kou Shibusawa team from KT) but with Gust brought on board specifically working on the graphics and character models, which... yeah. Definitely seems that way haha

what you basing the latter bit on?
The lack of KT in the game's copyright and no specific word of KT's involvement this time around. If they were involved to the extent they were in Three Houses, we would have almost certainly heard about it officially by now.

According to Emily, this is all Gust. Feels like a Gust game too.

Maybe IntSys is creatively looking over the project, especially combat part.
Pretty sure she said that Gust was only supporting on the art department for the game, and that the game was more of an Intelligent System game that Three House was ? Or was that someone else ? Because I remember someone saying that back then.

Yeah looks like I wasn't mistaken, the rumor indeed was that Gust was just there to assist on the art department.

The trailer shows the use of ring stands for special attacks (including map positioning) and even a “warp ragnarok”. Stands likely replace both combat arts and battalions.

The rumor I heard for the longest time was that the next new FE was a KT/Gust title while IS was busy with an FE4 remake.

A little mixed on it, but broadly I actually really like the much brighter colour palette, the almost painterly aspects of the visual style, including on the overhead map. I appreciate the improvements graphically, but like quite a few people I'm not a fan of how big-eyed and childlike some character faces are.

The setting doesn't grab me the way Three Houses did, but I'm still looking forward to the game. Mechanically I think it sounds interesting and the proof is really in the pudding.

Nah, Emily said KT and Gust were assisting with development, not that they were solely responsible for development.

Intelligent Systems were said to be also doing an FE4 remake, which is further out, by Nate. It's not as if IS are a 'one game at a time' studio, especially not now they work with KT as well as EPD on their games. It's also the case that Engage was largely complete by the end of last year, according to both Nate and Emily, so Intelligent Systems have had plenty of time now to shift focus and resources to other projects.

Collectors Edition Pre-Ordered through Nintendo. Excited for this game.

The presentation is amazing. Though Three Houses cast was definitely more special for now.

I loved Three Houses, but this aesthetic is much more to my tastes. I like the brighter, sillier vibe. It reminds me of Awakening, which is what got me into the series.

Do we know when development on the game started? Should be around 2020 after 3H dlc wrapped up > covid hit so it took 3 years?
It probably started earlier; they likely didn't need a full team for DLC. Plus, the concept seems to have arisen for the idea for an anniversary game.

Though perhaps early 2020 is right for 'full production' beginning, I dunno.

On Koei Tecmo not appearing on the copyright and such - might it be the case this game is using Intelligent Systems' own game engine, as opposed to KT's technology? So even though KT are assisting, the tech and engine come from Intelligent Systems this time?

If the rumors that it was going to be a 30th anniversary game are true, I would guess it could have started development in 2019 with a goal of releasing in 2021.

Not necessarily. IS could have licensed or been given access to the FE fork of the engine and used it. A lot of what the trailer showed was very similar to Three Houses save for the obvious visual upgrade.

I'm on the same boat, and I'll add that smaller maps and units with less mobility may fix some issues I have with 3H. I hope this doesn't mean that the maps will be really small and simple like in Heroes though.

Game looks like some jubilee/ christmas special edition. Like it's taking itself not seriously (Three Houses was very serious). And even more Anime than all it's presuccecors.

Graphics look good. Gameplay should be fun. Will watch it and probably buy on sale for 40.
