If it ain't enough that the energy cap will have trebled from March to October, that inflation rates aren't above 10% with no equivalent increase in wages or benefits, that interest rates have been increased pushing up mortgages, that small businesses are going bust due to energy bills causing unemployment for many workers, and a recession on the way now these fuckers want to reduce mandatory holidays and increase the effective max working week among probably a load of other crap. Straight up class warfare.

These people legitimately want to take us back to the Victorian age. Straight up victim blaming poor people for circumstances they can't escape and demonising them by claiming they're lazy, incompetent and need a firm hand to achieve success. Straight out of Dickens. "If only the workshy poor worked harder and stopped buying beer, drugs and Netflix subscriptions then we wouldn't be in this mess."

Their laughable solutions to the upcoming energy price crisis shows what they really think - They simply cannot comprehend how in three months time there will be millions of people genuinely unable to afford heating and energy bills.

I don't think she'll get the chance though. This cost of living crisis is going to end her and the Tories. Gaslighting doesn't work when people can't afford the gas to heat their homes.

I wish I were that optimistic. Gas&Electric is obviously the most immediate concern and so I expect her government to announce an adequate level of support. Not enough to prevent millions going cold and/or hungry and thousands dying but enough to stop a literal rebellion and perhaps allow her to hang on. But exchange that "help" for permanent changes to the economy again using the upcoming recession as an excuse. Obviously the newly reinvigorated unions and the enough is enough campaign will put up a fight but I certainly don't see the end of her and the Tories as anything approaching a certainty. The only certainty I can see is that the Labour Party will continue to be fucking useless.

The thing is though that what they consider 'adaquete levels of support' won't even touch the sides. They genuinely think tax cuts will solve everything. These won't even make a dent for the people on low incomes who barely pay any tax anyway, and who will still see their bills skyrocket. I can see them try a 'delay then repay' strategy which the energy companies favour but that will lock us in with high energy prices for years. But hey, by then that'll be a Labour problem.

The fact that during the whole leadership 'debate' cost of living has barely registered on the party radar, yet they get into a tizz about speed limits, Macron and transphobia, indicates they don't have a clue what's coming. They're too sheltered. And they can't afford to dawdle. If they hesitate even for a second then it'll be too late and countless small business will go bust, unemployment will skyrocket, and the economy gets caught in a negative spiral. Sure there are some in the Tories playing the 'disaster capitalism' card hoping to make a quick buck, but this goes beyond any crisis we've faced in a long time. We're talking about the entire bottom of the economy falling out. Governments generally do not survive this come election time.

Polls are now beginning to point towards a Labour Majority for the first time in yonks come the next election. And yeah, I'm hardly a Starmer fan either, but at this stage I'd take Sir Killalot from Robot Wars as PM over the Conservatives, and if things stay this bad, I won't be the only one thinking that.

The problem is the election is literally years away, so even when she gets in, does fuck all to help the spiraling economy and cost of living crisis, and presumably rolls back these protections, we'll still have to wait years until the election is called and at that point would have to hope that whoever wins is interested in undoing even a modicum of the damage.

It's actually not that far away. The latest an election can be called is end of 2024. That's just over two years away. Could be even earlier if they decide they want to go back to having May elections.

What I think we'll see is a mad rush by the tories to get as much heinous stuff through parliament while they have that majority, and then leave Labour to pick up the pieces.

They must sense they're on a hiding to nothing. There's no way they can say out loud 'we're going to take away your holidays and make you work 60 hour weeks' to the electorate and expect that to be a winning strategy. They're just pushing it through while they have the chance and then hope Labour are too busy fighting fires to undo their damage.

Edit: As an aside, the tories nicking everyone's holiday allowance is an electoral gift to Labour, it's pretty much an open goal. Let's see if Starmer whiffs it.

That is two winters away and plenty of time for the Conservative majority to do whatever they want. Banking on the next government’s… ability? Desire? To see a lot of that undone seems very optimistic. Especially based on Labour’s current messaging.

Fasten your seatbelt, UK, things are going to be even more Wild.
Also, in the end, never forget, it's EU's fault.

It's official, Truss wins, but at a much lower winning proportion than people expected, only 57%, lowest winning proportion for a Tory leader since 2001. With support of only a third of MPs, polls still in Labour's favour and rumours of Johnson already rallying support for a comeback, she's in for a rough time.

Genuinely interested if they're spooked enough about the energy crisis to do anything meaningful with it. Let's hope the Tories scent blood and continue to backstab each other so much they don't get any of their heinous stuff done.

Honestly just depressing, Part of me wonders if Truss will act in the short-term to stop the very real prospect of civil unrest over the energy crisis, but another part of me thinks she doesn't care if the country burns just so long as she can say she's PM. Or maybe she won't prove to have the competence and wherewithal to actually stop it.

My suspicions are that rather than trying to do anything meaningful at the structural level to address the cost of living crisis (by which I mean the energy crisis, the Brexit crisis with stuff being more expensive to import/difficult to export, the wage crisis, and a bunch of other things all rolled into one) Truss is just going to roll out a tax cut that barely effects anyone on a low wage, and then continue to implement policies that favour the rich while those on benefits are left to starve/freeze.

She used her media appearances over the last few days to try and sell tax cuts for the rich. Think about that. You've got a once in a generation crisis where people genuinely cannot afford to eat their homes or buy food, and her priority wasn't to try and get a reassuring message out to tell people she has a solution. Her main priority was to try and sell the idea that giving rich people more money will help the economy.

This is absolute, mask off, demented right wing politics coming into play. Either Truss is too stupid to realize how bad her policies are, or she's just determined to spend the next few years pushing through as many policies that give money to rich donors as possible. It's an absolute farce that a political lightweight like her was ever able to get into the PM role.

I honestly couldn't care less who became next PM since they were both grade A twats of the highest order. Truss may be the dumber one of the two though.

Truss has also gotten a lot of ire for the increased military spending:

Literal insanity. What is the justification for that?

Actually, scratch that, I don't think they justify anything anymore, they just do it regardless all stone faced whilst trotting out the usual lies on TV, never challenged by our media. Anything goes nowadays.

If you hate the Tories, I think you'll be glad they're in power this winter. On the one hand, there's not much ANYONE could do about the hardships coming down the line in the next couple months, but whichever european governments are in power are going to take a long time recovering from the beating they're about to take as a result.

Truss probably genuinely thinks she has what it takes to steer us through this crisis. Full Dunning Kruger effect mode engaged. She's convinced herself that tax cuts + Brexit will sort everything out. She's not only ignoring the fact that they would barely make a dent, but is likely being manipulated by much more devious forces using her as a patsy so they get their cheeky bonuses before things go belly up.

At some point I think she and the new government are going to wake up and realise the scale of the problem, which goes beyond people struggling to eat and heat their homes, and into territory where thousands upon thousands of small to medium business end up closing due to soaring energy costs and reduced demand, leading to recession, unemployment, and ultimately the bottom of the economy falling out. There's limits to how far their limited idologies can lead them.

I do sense a lot of people are setting her up to fail. It's clear who the party and press really want as Prime Minister, and it's not this blonde maniac, it's the outgoing one.

Which is mental. Not only did Johnson act appallingly while in office, he also became incredibly unpopular with the electorate due to his antics.

He had his time, he spaffed it up the wall. How much of a dimwit do you have to want him back in charge when he not only wasn't up to the job, he was manifestly unpopular?

It's like being sad that Harold Shipman got struck off the medical register,. and complaining about what a good local doctor he was...

Conservatives genuinely don't think he did anything wrong. That's the thing. It's the same mental gymnastics that allows Republicans in the USA to go all in on Trump. They see Boris having affairs, flouting rules, throwing money at his mates and generally sticking two fingers up at authority figures and like it, because it's what they want to do if they had the chance. Plus he winds up left wing snowflakes, which is the most important thing in the world according to these people.

The press adore Boris because he's 'one of them,' an ex-journalist who rose to the top and now allows them to get away with anything. It's a symbiotic relationship. They leave Boris alone, he leaves them alone, and they can be vile to everyone else at their leisure. And if they end up sneaking a peerage out of their toadying, then whey hey. Our press aren't actually press anymore, they're just megaphones blaring to 95% of the population "Rich people are better than you peasants," and are only interested in protecting themselves, which includes the very people that they're supposed to hold to account.

But hey, joke's on them. People are fed up of his antics: Partygate really struck a nerve and if they think his return will be seen as a triumphant homecoming by the elctorate, they're in for a rude awakening. We saw this in Australia recently where despite having the full might of the Murdoch empire behind them, the Liberal Party got hammered (the Liberals being far right in this instance in case you didn't know). It could easily happen here. Like I said earlier in the thread, their tricks and distractions won't work when people see their living standards declining rapidly.

BBC already engaging in usual government propaganda calling a £529pa rise in energy bills for the typical household a 'cut'.
This is what's fucking absurd.

Bills have already doubled this year for many people, if not more.

Capping bills at £2500 isn't a cut, it's capping bills at one extortionate amount rather than another.

Fucking ridiculous how the media are already running PR for Truss.

The BBC (and other assorted 'centrist' journalists) got mad because a comedian was sarcastic to Liz Truss on a definitely totally serious panel show hosted by the absolutely, unimpeachably unbiased Laura Kuenssberg. The media class in this country is utterly complicit and contemptuous of the people.

I mean, that's also known as Thatcher era

Absolute fucking disaster.

This is what happens when you outsource your thinking to Tufton Street and give the uber-right cranks there the keys to the castle.

The galling thing is they're not even trying to hide it. It's a budget that gives everything to the super rich, they've tanked the value of the pound with it, and they're just standing there grinning.

Kinda feels like the Tories know they are likely to lose the next election so now they're just going to gleefully and with the mask fully off engage in the Tory pastimes of funnelling money to the rich and kicking the poor in the teeth.

Then Labour get in, have no resources (or political will, if we're being honest) to do anything and the Tories swoop back in on the pretense that Labour can't be trusted with the economy.

Honestly, the only hope I see for this country is in mass civil action. At the very least a general strike.

All this lettuce stuff has gone too far. There’s a couple of parsnips at the end of my garden with a manifesto equally as viable.

Hey, it's clear you're fired up about the changes in the works. The financial landscape can be like a rollercoaster, right? Although I'm stepping into the convo a tad late, your concerns might resonate with others too.Speaking from personal experience, I've seen how policy changes can ripple through economies. It's like an unexpected gust shaking up the sails.

I really do find it interesting watching the way these bot accounts necro threads with their paragraphs of completely irrelevant text. It's like watching a painfully stupid robot trying to gain sentience.

Mods: is there any way we can funnel these bot accounts into a thread with each other, and observe the nightmare algorithm conversation that ensues? In the name of science, of course...

Fuck Liz Truss, always and forever

Regarding these big shifts, having a chat with a (admin edit: link removed) might seem unexpected. But they're like the navigators through these stormy waters, just like having an experienced captain steering the ship.
