Me playing Fata Morgana: A Requiem for Innocence 1 hour ago: Huh. This is way more upbeat and cheerful than the original game.
Me playing Fata Morgana: A Requiem for Innocence half an hour ago: Never mind...

If you're playing Yu-No, do you think you could help me out with how the time thing works? Would be much appreciated.
Sure! I’m barely into it, so I doubt I’ll be much help lol, but if I catch up: I can help. The main criticism I heard from a friend was regarding how difficult the game was at points. Sounds like a guide is almost required to prevent frustration sadly.

Also as a side note, I love Ryoko. She was my favorite one in 13 sentinels!

Ryoko rules. Her arc was my favorite as well, she's very compelling. Also, she's insanely OP in Destrucion mode, if you have her with the hyper condenser in casual mode, the game basically auto-plays.

I haven't posted on VN threads before but I have definitely gotten into them over the past year. Some of the ones I have played include:

  • Clannad: this was the first VN I played and made me more interested in the genre -- really enjoyed it
  • Summer Pockets: saw it was also made by Key so I figured I would try it -- overall, I like how chill it is most of the time, and I enjoyed the story and characters
  • Yu-No: I have mixed feelings about this one. The pervy stuff was over the top but the protagonist did have some good moments. I liked the premise but wasn't really a fan of the direction they went with the final route. I enjoyed most of the character routes, though.
  • Chaos;Child: this one gets pretty intense! There were moments where I was like "wow, they really did that" -- this is one where I constantly wanted to know what would happen next
I know there are some classics I haven't played, like Steins;Gate and Little Busters, but I actually saw their anime adaptations before I got into VN's, so I'm not in a huge rush to get to them even though I may get more out of the stories. Also, I heard ReWrite is getting a Steam release? I've heard many good things about it so whenever that comes out I will get it for sure.

Visual novels are cool. I haven't played so many of them as I've gotten older because some tropey anime aspects have become grating over time (mostly perverted "humour" that tends to find its way into most stories) but a good number of them remain among my favourite video games, if we're lumping them together. Including, of course, Umineko :)

I did play Raging Loop this year, which itself suffered a little from that, but is one that I really dug for about 2/3rds of it. I feel like it dropped the ball in the latter third and that soured me on it some, it's certainly a very compelling experience through the majority of it though.

I hadn't heard of Gnosia before going through this thread, really glad it was brought up because sign me up for more Werewolf/Mafia themed stories. Glad this is coming to Steam this year apparently, I'll be waiting on that release and will be sure to play it.

I'm deep into Raging Loop at the moment. It's a lot more fun and interesting than one might expect of modern Kemco. There's still a lot to the mystery to uncover as far as I'm in, but it's been interesting to see unravel from the get-go.

Okay so I finished A Requiem for Innocence last night.

Holy shit.

Holy SHIT.

Someone get me a cold drink.

I feel the same way, it was very compelling, until the point where you find out it's kind of a dream..but not really? It started to seem like the character then knew more than me as a player and having explanations for just about everything.

I am compiling myself a list of VNs on Switch on Deku Deals to make it easier to find VNs on sale among all the clutter. It's probably still missing some lesser known titles though.

Playing through Robotics;Notes Elite right now, not sure if I like it just yet. Still very early on, but it's not compelling me enough.

Here you have a few ones missing:

Little Busters
The Grisaia Trilogy
Clannad Side Stories
Tomoyo After -It's a Wonderful Life- CS Edition
Alternate Jake Hunter: Daedalus The Awakening of Golden Jazz
Aokana - Four Rhythms Across the Blue
Bustafellows

Read a section of Raging Loop last night that played the same loud, inconsistent loop of a car engine sputtering for several minutes and it’s the most uncomfortable the game has made me. The horror!

Not only is this list great for finding deals, It's perfect for sorting out visual novels from the eshop's busy interface. I feel like it's easy for VN's to fall through the cracks there.

This talk of Raging Loop reminds me that I should probably buy it because it's one of those games that will continue to be really affordable until it suddenly isn't. There's only so many times I can deal with "OOP, RARE Game!"

I'm currently reading through the recently fan translated Higurashi Kizuna console-exclusive arcs.

They're not as compelling as the main series but I do enjoy how certain mysteries are being expanded on in greater detail. I don't think the main side story needed four VNs though...

Looking forward to playing Va11-Hall-A after Metroid Dread.

The Great Ace Attorney is one of my games of the year. As someone who has been on the original series since its Western release in on the DS, I never thought they could top the original trilogy. Too much nostalgia wrapped up in it for me. But they did. I genuinely consider it better than the first three, and I'm amazed I think that. If you go by the typical and stale AA fan conversation of ranking cases, it might not be, but when you take the cast, setting and themes into account the whole story is elevated to another level. The magnificent 3d animations help a lot too. The OST might be my soundtrack of the year. What a game.

Lastly, I hope I don't upset anyone here, but The House in Fata Morgana was one of the worst recommendations I've ever gotten. I'm absolutely astonished at the insanely consistent level of praise it gets without a hint of criticism when I found it so poorly written that I was constantly breaking out in laughter at the bathos present in just about every scene. There is pretty much no recovering as a serious work from some of the "beast" scenes in the second scenario. I stuck with it until I was well past the first four scenarios but it never improved. Read a summary and was glad I bailed when I did. Really, really regret the time I spent hoping it would get better.

Anyway, that's just a dissenting opinion for anyone who hasn't played it yet - because I wish I had read a dissenting opinion but couldn't find even one.

Aw shit, while I've already upset everyone let me just get this out of the way and bounce: VLR -> 999

I’m with you on Fata Morgana. The writing (or perhaps the localization) totally took me out of the game. The word choice and the screens full of written out screams spoke to a level of pretentiousness and melodrama beyond my tolerance. Mega Man X4 looks like the soul of wit by comparison.

It’s nice to see all the praise in this thread for Raging Loop. I really enjoyed that as a take on Werewolf/Mafia games, even if the ending goes in heavy on Japanese history/mythology. On a related note, I downloaded Gnosia from the eShop a while back, but still have to get to it, Somnium Files, Doki Doki Literature Club, and Ace Attorney Chronicles. There are so many good games — so many good VNs — to play!

Edit: Just remembered I have Root Double and 428: Shibuya Scramble in my Steam backlog as well. Holy smokes, I don’t know where I’ll find the time for all of these.

Still on the second route of Raging Loop and still loving it. It's taking me a while because I'm reading it before bed each night so very slowly chipping away at it, but it's an absolute joy. Praying for my dude Hashimoto. I've also been totally losing it at how the students call the protagonist poop-man in the first route and then in the next they switch to piss-man. Also had a genuine "oh shit" moment when...

...I used the Snake's power for the first time and immediately found out that the journalist was a wolf.

The only thing I haven't loved is one character's bumbling, fawning innocent thing and constant "huaaaaaaa"-ing. I feel like it's at least partly a send-up of that trope but it also leads to her VA going through her dialogue very, very slowly.

All this Raging Loop talk reminded me I still have to do the side stories!

I kept delaying the Revelation Mode and the Side Stories because I didn't want the game to end, but the way it's going with my backlog I might never get around back to it LMAO

Started Utawarerumono Mask of Deception since I've been meaning to get to it.

Been wanting to play a new VN for while, so this has been a really enjoyable read so far. The SRPG stuff so far has just been okay/enjoyable enough, but really enjoying where the world is building so far. Haku's kind of a dork, but he's a fun protagonist that seems like a normal person put into a strange new world. Kuon's great so far and I'm really enjoying her interactions with Haku. Still fairly early in, but gonna do more soon.! Will be a fun read whenever I need to wrap up the night.

@Irene I decided to restart Yu-No since I couldn’t remember what was going on LOL. I’m still in the prologue now at about 2 hours in

Probably not the best idea to devote time to this now with more games coming soon… but I got the brain worms telling me to play this now. I definitely want to get through it.

Welp just bought House in Fata Morgana off of ebay >.>
I've been putting off playing it ever since vita days so this will be a treat now that my oled is back!

I dislike how I can’t spend more than a few lines praising a game’s major strengths without spending longer criticizing its minor flaws. I don’t know if it’s a symptom of growing jaded or just my underlying personality coming to bear.

Anyhow, I completed Gnosia, which I found to be pretty good. I’m a sucker for hidden roles in board/card games of the Werewolf variety, and I’ve long awaited the day where the dream of an AI-driven one would be realized. I knew going in that’s not what Gnosia could achieve, but now my dream is “Gnosia, but smarter”.

That’s an unfair take on Gnosia, because despite playing the simple Werewolf simulator around 150 times (seriously) over the course of about 30 hours, the VN narrative is the heart of the design. And it’s alright. Certainly not as fresh to me as 999 or VLR were years ago or even Raging Loop was earlier this year, but is that a black mark against Gnosia? I don’t know. I will state that I’m not at all a fan of the character designs here (the guy with a cat grafted to his neck is particularly bad); VLR was about my tolerance limit. The repetitive/randomized dialog during the bulk of the playtime doesn’t help, either.

I guess for an overall assessment, Gnosia is a good VN, but the VN/story aspects go over a lot of well-trod ground while the game aspect is both a disappointment and also a step toward my dream game.

Onward to Doki Doki Literature Club and The Great Ace Attorney. Maybe I’ll go back to Paradise Killer first, though.

Hi everyone.

I'm fairly inexperienced with visual novels but they are fast becoming one of my favourite genres. I find them a great alternative to a bona fide book, especially when I want to play but don't fancy anything physically taxing, or don't want to worry about complex systems. Great with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine; first thing in the morning or last thing at night.

I have played the first Ace Attorney game, back on the DS. I enjoyed it and intend to play the trilogy if I can pick it up in a decent eShop sale. (I actually have the trilogy on 3DS but I'd prefer it on Switch because I like the versatility of it.)

My first story-only (as in, no choices or "gamey" mechanics) VN was a little indie title called A Winter's Daydream. It's an "OELVN" by Ebi-hime. I played on Switch. It's a lovely short story with a bizarre premise that you think is going to be all ecchi but it really isn't. It's a heartwarming tale, with good artwork, and nice sounds, if lacking in variety. My only bugbear was saving... You can't just save right where you are. It autosaves presumably by chapter markers so you never know quite where you are when you resume reading. Technical issues aside, I'd recommend it. And it's the right season for it...

I've also finished up Kotodama: The 7 Mysteries of Fujisawa, also on Switch. I bought it for just 69p and it was a bargain. I enjoyed this a lot until nearer the end, due to the constant looping back in time, and inability to skip the match 3 puzzles I enjoyed but didn't want to always replay when skipping to get to the choices. (very minor spoilers concerning repetition)

And most recently I have enjoyed Tokyo School Life, on Switch. It's by M2 and is polished with a good UI. It lacks variety in the visual department and a lot of the backgrounds are clearly just photos that have had some kind of anime filter applied. But I learned a little about Japanese culture (even if a lot of it I already knew, it was still nice), and the character arc I completed (Sakura) was well written and quite emotional. I intend see the endings for the other two characters.

I started Doki Doki Literature Club! Plus this evening and I love it so far. Chuckled when upon booting it said all characters in the game are 18+. Sure, sure! And then it throws a load of content warnings at you. Looking forward to seeing what all the fuss is about.

Chaos;Head is coming to Switch as part of a dual pack with its sequel. Heard mixed things about it, but I always wanted to play it. Hope it gets localized finally!

Meant to only post this here but put it in the main thread by mistake first as I swapped through tabs…embarrassing!

I'm going through Robotics;Notes Elite right now, and while I'm having fun with it (again, after dropping it temporarily to solve a case in Ace Attorney), it feels kinda slow. According to my Switch profile, I have like 7 hours of playtime, and I'm still not sure what the real story is. It cannot be just about building robots and going to competitions, right? It seems to be teasing something more.

I saw this one yesterday:

What are ya'lls thoughts on it?

I think it looks like a weird, yet intriguing match up of different game elements. Art is pretty and the cast is solid too! I'll keep my eye out on this one haha.

At this point I kind of even wonder if it falls under a Visual Novel. 😅

Seems like the creator of Kakegurui worked on it, and Izanagi Games too.
(I think IG worked with Tookyo Company on World's End Club so it does seem slightly in the alley of Danganronpa/Zero Escape-esque stuff)

Apparently it was announced 2 years ago already at Tokyo Game Show, but it must've went over my head back then.

Finally took the leap and played through Raging Loop this week. Man it's really hit my thirst for murder mystery VNs, and I can relate to how the Werewolf/Mafia game was employed here at a personal level. Although I was disappointed with occasional use of comic reliefs and cliches to advance the story, plus the lull pacing near the end, overall I still find it really well-written with many layers of story beats.
I like how the game evolved through each loop. At the beginning it felt like the game was played by newbies with confusing events and total defeat of the villagers against the wolves. But in subsequent loops the game went much smoother and somehow the villagers became more and more skilled with utilizing their power. It feels like a fixed party replaying the game in real life while learning about the mechanics and about each other. The players' thoughts and reasonings are also very natural, to the point I'd dare to say that I will certainly do the same if I'm in their role. That's why I think the portrayal of the game here is really authentic. But the VN is much more than that which satistifies me further.
I'm really satisfied with how Raging Loop weaves different layers of the story into each other and reveal them with very good timing. First came the werewolf game which also caught my attention with crumbs of mysteries. Then the mystery grew and enveloped the werewolf game. Finally the mythical stories are (partially) demystified themselves by history and human politics. However this is also where I'm disappointed with this VN, since it still keeps some mysteries like Meiko or Mujina until the end. The ending would feel much more satisfying to me, had the authors fully commit in the final chapter to expose all supernatural occurrences, at least it makes Haruaki's reflection about religions much less corny. Nevertheless, I appreciate their effort in contextualizing such a Western game in Japanese mythology and culture.

I still haven't finished Raging Loop, partly because I haven't been in the mood to read too much but partly because I'm not ready for it to end. I had just started the final route.

I feel like I've been totally spoiled by Gnosia and Raging Loop in terms of characters and interactivity. Will definitely be checking out that video for more recommendations going forward. I wish Buried Stars would go on deeper discount (and that there were more m/m romance games on Switch to balance all the otome lol).

One of these days I'll figure out how to get into Higurashi and Umineko.

I started Big Dipper the other night. Read for a couple of hours. At first it seemed a bit Engrishy and the UI isn't amazing, but it's won me over with its heartfelt story and likeable characters. I think it's a Russian VN and the translation isn't as bad as the opening chapter where it is a little stilted. Some nice CGs. No real accessibility options so not good for those with poor eyesight.

Anyone get Rewrite yet? I plan on getting it as soon as I finish up SMT4, but I loved Clannad and Little Busters so I'm looking forward to it. I didn't think the anime was very good but I assume that was a Grisaia type of situation where they tried to fit wayyyyyyy too much into wayyyyyy too few episodes.

I got the true ending in Gnosia tonight after 156 loops. I barely started it a few days ago, but I became super hooked after the tutorial section ended and you started unlocking more words to use in debates. There’s so much gameplay here, I feel like it’s hard to classify the game as a visual novel, but I think we feel it best fits here for discussion?

For non-spoiler impressions, I dug the characters and while I had my doubts as it played out, I really dug the way the story came together ultimately. Anyone who loves Mafia/Among Us and/or loves sci-fi stories should definitely check it out. For the debate sections I think it rides a tough line of keeping you in the dark and giving you enough clues to figure out who is lying and needs to go. Because of the way the roles get turned on or off in between loops and how relationships shift, you can get into some interesting situations where you really have to pick and choose who to vote off first (not to mention when the story influences your decisions) and there is potential for some great blindside betrayals of your own trust when you get taken/voted out. The game is a little too long which both helps/hurts the story and it caused me to check out of a good handful of games especially when a loop was looking like a bust. It’s not a major issue and at least you are always getting XP to level up skills.

I’ll put my full spoiler talk below here, but I really recommend it overall. I’m still sorting through my thoughts as I write this out and post this, but I think this is a game I’ll appreciate even more with distance which is always cool.

I ultimately really dug the main story and it felt right how it worked. I’m sad the one time I looked up how to advance the story was when you have to set it to zero Gnosia for the first time. I had been playing for hours and just wanted to see one more thing before going to bed…oh well there. But yeah the explanation for why the loop was set up the way it was and how you could close it by going back in time was cool. I know it was explained how it started by you getting attacked and having the initial Gnosia infection, but I forget if it explained exactly how the loops started. I feel the implication of the ending is that Manan ultimately becomes the Krukushka we meet on the ship which means there’s an even greater time loop in play. I guess it explains Jonas’ motivations? I wanted more explicit closure with him, but it’s probably one of those things that’s better off left unexplained. Leaving some big room to imagine possibilities is good!

My biggest fear as the game was going was that all of the fun details/mysteries you uncover wouldn’t tie together so I’m happy the true ending did with Setsu pulling a lot of them together. Also, one of the dialogue options being “SQ sucks!” was funny lol. I think my favorite characters were Setsu, Shigemichi (absolute bro if he wasn’t Gnosia), Raqio, Otome, and Sha-Ming (even though he was an asshole lol). Biggest weirdo was definitely Chippie lol. I probably would have liked him, except it felt like he was the Gnosia for me every other time lol. I wanted to know more about Jonas, Krukushka, and Yuriko, but no such luck. The others were fine, really not a weak link in the cast which is nice considering how long you loop with them.

Anyway my post is getting long curious what did all y’all who played it thought?

Is it really that good? I just noticed it's currently 20% off in the UK eShop. I recently finished V3 which I freaking loved. I'm in a mood for another great VN or more specifically a hybrid that has gameplay/choices in a VN like Ace Attorney, AI Somnium Files and Danganronpa.

I thought it was incredible, one of my favourite games this year. Equal parts atmospheric, funny, and ultimately very beautiful. I know some people don't gel with the way it's basically constantly replaying a short Mafia game between VN segments, but it begins by slowly expanding it and adding more roles and features and then you get into the swing of it and are gradually learning more about the characters and the over-arching stories with each game you play. I thought it was very thematically rich once you started to understand more about everyone.

I'd actually love to see more of those characters and that universe, it was tough leaving them when it ended.

Yeah! I think if you liked games like Danganronpa and Ai I think you’d like Gnosia. It’s more serious than those games are despite a few unusual character designs, but the satisfaction games like those and Ace Attorney have when they all come together is very similar.

Gnosia also has an interesting distinction between those games in that you can treat it like a story to solve/advance and you also can play rounds as just a mafia/werewolf/Among Us game and it’s very satisfying as just that too. I was always trying to advance the story, but when a round wasn’t going to pay off for that, until I got towards the very end of my overall playthrough I still enjoyed and took the Among Us games seriously. I wanted to win!

You guys have me convinced lol. I'll definitely buy it this week.

For what it’s worth, among Werewolf/Mafia themed VNs, I liked Raging Loop a lot more than Gnosia. Going through 100+ randomized games where there’s so much repetition is pretty boring, and the overall story and characters come close to DR/999/VLR/AA for me.

The main hook was the actual deduction/misdirection game, which had so much potential, but ultimately was far too simple and exploitable.

That’s not to say that I didn’t like Gnosia. I’d say it was good, not great.

Well, Big Dipper didn't last long. I'd recommend if you fancy a very short kinetic romance VN. I don't regret reading, but I do wish it could have been more fleshed out. Ah, well. Onto the next one...

Currently on loop 25 in Gnosia. Not bad so far. I really enjoy learning more about the characters and I love VN that have more gameplay elements such as choices, leveling up and increasing your stats in Gnosia which makes it more fun.

I'm curious where the story will go, quite a lot of mysteries to unfold.

Although if there is one criticism I want to mention it would be during the rounds of arguing/doubting and defending. It's a shame that all characters keep recycling the exact same lines but with different names. Wish there was variety in the dialogue to keep it fresh.

Yeah I have mixed feelings on the repeated dialog. I wish there was more variation, but it’s good if you want to speed through it, you can catch what’s going on at a glance.

Like most games discussed here it's not a visual novel, but I just started Buddy Mission Bond and it's real neat.
Speaking of actual visual novels, on chapter 2 of Higurashi, and that's the real deal right there, I tell you what.

So I saw a suggestion on YouTube that there is a really underrated VN called Buried Stars and it's on Switch (Good lord it costs £44+ on the eShop).

Anyone played it? Good story/twists? Judging from steam reviews it's really written well and the characters are mature and the game has a lot of budget and presentation.

I am waiting for a sale that never comes, as I love k-pop and am intrigued to see a Korean VN/mystery game that deals with it. I’ve heard the writing is sometimes a little patchy due to translation/localisation issues, but I may be wrong there.

I have read some steam reviews and they are consistent with one of the main criticisms: localisation/typo issues. Apparently some words that got translated got some players genuinely confused in some important parts of the game.

I guess it's a wait and see. I won't lie though, this VN is looking mighty intriguing but I want those issues fixed and a decent price lol.

A lot of VNs on sale currently! Plugging my list once again, 34 discounts, if I missed any, please recommend so I'll add them. https://www.dekudeals.com/lists/bj4v95?filter[discount]=discounted

Our World Is Ended is 90% off, might pick it up, along with Robotics Notes DaSH to play once I finish Elite.
Great list! There's a few missing and I really wish we could edit a shared list on Deku Deals.

https://www.dekudeals.com/items/a-winters-daydream and https://www.dekudeals.com/items/big-dipper

They're both kinetic (as in, no choices), so not sure if you'd exclude them? I've read them both and they're both decent enough when on sale, particularly A Winter's Daydream, which has a cute story about a young man reconnecting with his grandma.

P.S. damn, I bought Our World Is Ended for £7.99 on sale, and haven't gotten around to it yet. You win some; you lose some.
