I will SCREAM if we get a Baten Kaitos remaster, but I very much doubt it.

Eh, I kinda disagree. Awakening wasn't that much of a departure from the Tellius Games. Honestly I think what happened to improve its popularity was a significantly increased exposure (the Smash Bros effect mostly), and the series actually having a moment in the spotlight, not being overshadowed by the likes of Zelda, Metroid etc. Sometimes it's as simple as right place, right time.

Re-releases of the two Ike games wouldn't do Three Houses numbers sure, but they'd sell waaaay better now than they did back in the day.
Way better presentation, on a platform that actually sold well, and somewhat more aproachable, better word of mouth.
There where a handfull or reasons why id did what other entried did not. The 3DS was also a more RPG focused game, while nintendo consoles where kinda left out after the SNES... so the base was even smaller for that type of game.
And the DS entries just looked bad while being remakes...
These are the best selling selling GCN titles according to Celine's thread on Install Base:

Will be interesting to see what Nintendo ends up plucking from here.
this...looks worse then i remembered it.
take the 3 top selling nintendo games on switch and they crush that list...

Lets cut all those where they would want you to buy the current iteration:
smash,Animal Crossing, mario kart, party...

thats 11 less.
Then the pokemon spinoffs (dont fit into their current presentation and schedule for that franchise), so were at 13.

Leaves us with:
Sunshine
WW
LM
MP
PM
SA
Pikmin
TP
Kirby Air Ride
Donkey Konga
Pikmin 2
MP2

Sunshine is already on the Platform.
WW/TP will be semingly soon. MP1 similar.

Metroid Prime 2
Paper Mario
Starfox Adventures
Pikmin 1 and 2
Donkey Konga
Luigis Mansion
Kirby Air Ride

From that:
i dont see Donkey Konga coming back, star Fox also makes no sense to me, the franchise needs a fresh start, not another rethread of the same aestetics and world. Kirby Air ride: not without sakurai. Luigis Mansion did get a remake on the 3DS, i dont think we will get another remake that early. Pikmin... i mean, the P3 port was kinda half assed, and we still have no clue where Pikmin 4 is...

MP2 if the first one sells well and Paper Mario. those make sense to me. Then we obviously have other outliers (Fire Emblem...F Zero), but over all... i dont see that much to port from the GC library if the Zelda and Metroid Rumors are true.
(First party, there are a lot third party games that could get ported, Skies of Arcadea, Baten Kaitos, Viewtiful Joe, Tales of Symphonia...)

Yeah well, let's launch with a Luigi game, make Zelda cel shaded, give Mario a gun, have no DVD player, sell Rareware, have our big new IP be a timed strategy game, and turn Pokemon Stadium/Snap into some weird RPGs, and then see what happens.

I have such fond memories for all of these games now. What a time to be alive. Those games were all so very creative in execution. Too bad Splatoon stole Mario's gun, still angry about that.

Who's Miyamoto?

Some old guy who once walked into the Nintendo headquaters and occupied some rooms. Usually runs around and flips tables upside down and there's rumors he started to grow a small garden in one of the occupied rooms.

Nintendo doesn't know how to get him out, and apparently no one reported him missing.

Is he like Koizumi's understudy or something?

That is just going too far. Apologise to Gamecube :(

Why is everyone talking about cool Gamecube games?

Luigi's Mansion deserves a (real) second shot. It's better than the third game.

Pikmin 2 is best Pikmin.

Star Fox Assault is good, actually.

Paper Mario is just as good as its annoying fans will tell you.

And, of course...#FreeViewtifulJoe.

Sometimes i'm glad Nintendo takes weird decisions and bets like some of those. Obviously the release timing and lack of DVD player were big blunders, but Wind Waker is now considered a classic by many, Luigi's Mansion's most recent entry sold more than all Zeldas before BOTW, and Fire Emblem, after a rough start in the West, became an important IP.

Wow everything you said here was wrong
Except viewtifuljoe but the rest goes against all that's good in the world

worked on Kirby spin off for quite a while, surprisingly haven't work on Dream Buffet

Well, that's because Dream Buffet was mostly worked on by mainline staff that are also credited on Forgotten Land; Kumazaki directed and all! The Super Kirby Clash / Fighters 2 staff and Battle Royale staff both remain absent; so I think we'll see some more spin-off Kirby next year.

I'd like to think somebody is working on a new Kirby collection with Return to Dream Land and the 3DS titles, and Vanpool's known port project could fit the bill, but I like the idea of them working on Chibi-Robo too...

I'm not too sure about Animal Crossing to be honest. I think Story of Seasons shows there's some merit in remakes for life sim type games, and the original Animal Crossing is pretty far removed from where the series is now with New Horizons, so I think they could co-exist on a single platform. Gives them the potential to merge together all of the content from every version of the game too; that hasn't been done yet.

Yeah, I feel like sometimes people overrate how much NuFE as a whole is different from the old games.

The only major change they should do to an eventual POR + RD remaster/collection is to add traditional support conversations in Radiant Dawn. Aside from that a remaster/collection of these games will probably do fine sales-wise if they just add Casual Mode and all the QoL from the modern games like skipping enemy phase, and those are basically guaranteed since even the Shadow Dragon NES ROM that they released for the 20th anniversary had them.

Nintendo is focused on remastering (or remaking) games that people keep asking for. Nintendo pays attention to social media and message boards.
Does that mean a FE6/Binding Blade remake is still possible? I want that so badly :>

Oh so what you're saying is I should just immediately launch a full scale social media campaign for #StarFoxAdventuresHD

GameCube had the (semi-)unique problem that the hardware was so unpopular that it limited software sales and software wasn't popular enough to improve hardware sales. Even when they basically gave the console away.

At least Nintendo didn´t have to film kidnapping a family for an ad to try to sell it

The reality of GameCube's popularity always shocks me. I feel like everyone in my age group who considers gaming a big part of their lives grew up with the GameCube and are still big fans. Growing up, all my close friends had one and we shared a bunch of memories.

Crazy that such an iconic device (in my circle anyway) was ultimately a big failure.

Fire Emblem grew up thanks to big change to the formula, not because of a remaster.
Let's be real, the real reasons why FE succeeded and revived itself was because they for once properly advertised the series and cause of the Smash effect. Went from nearly going extinct to essentially an unkillable B to A-Tier IP.

Age and location play a huge role here. It was much more popular among a certain demographic and also predominantly among North Americans (more than half of its total units were sold in NA). That's why you also see so much love for it and its games among people in their late 20s to mid-30s on English speaking message boards. To Europeans, even those born in the early 90s, it was basically a non-factor.

I could see WW/TP HD being the January release for 2023, say BOTW2 launches May 2023 so enough space between both. Metroid Prime HD slots into late November/early December 2022.

Please release Advance Wars on the 30th September as was rumoured

Eh to be frank, the only reason the GC's remembered to this day is due to the various mario party games, other mario games like TTYD, Smash Melee, WM/TP and Resident Evil 4.

My bets on Gamecube/Wii remakes/remasters on the long future:

  • Metroid Prime 1/2/3
  • Zelda WW/TP
  • Punch-Out (fixing some stuff)
  • Paper Mario TTYD
  • F-Zero GX
  • Kirby Air Ride/Epic Yarn/Adventure Wii
  • Smash Melee
  • Animal Crossing
  • Pikmin 1/2
  • Luigis Mansion
  • Last Story
  • Pandora’s Tower
  • Batallion Wars 1/2
  • Chibi-Robo
  • DKC Returns
  • Wave Race Blue Storm
  • 1080 Avalanche
  • Disaster Day of Crisis
  • Eternal Darkness
  • Super Mario Sunshine/Galaxy 1/Galaxy 2
  • Sin & Punishment 2
Thats 30 titles that can be span around the next 5 years or so.

That's not even all of them, GC fans love Pikmin, Animal Crossing, F Zero GX, Pokémon Colloseum and XD, Kirby Air Ride, Ribbit King of course, and some people like Donkey Kong Jungle Beat I've heard. But seriously, of course it's rememberd due to various games people love, what other reason would there be?

Wow. Nailed me to the fuckin wall. lol I wonder how the prospect of Gamecube ports actually sounds to people outside my demo? Do they think of it as a "history lesson?" A "see what I missed" sort of thing?

Saying a console is remembered because it had good games seems kinda obvious though...

No other reason. If it wasn't for fans loudly expressing their love for the GC to this day, the GC would've likely faded as a failure like Google Stadia.

No groups of people like to dwell on past failures more than old people, Nintendo fans, and old Nintendo fans.

Nah, the GameCube was hit hard by the prevailing notion of ¨Who wants kiddy games?¨ at the times due to GTA becoming a cultural phenomenon and other series trying to cater to gamers getting older. I remember as a kid so many people and even gaming mags poking fun at Nintendo´s image since Mature games were taking over fast.

Something Nintendo did definitely worked though. My first gaming console was the Game Boy Color and my first "home" console was the GameCube a couple of years later. I was like 8-10 years old.

If I hadn't been a part of Nintendo's """"ecosystem"""" at that time who knows if gaming would have become one of my primary hobbies?

I fall smack dab into that demographic but I live in Switzerland from my perspective the GC library got basically two minor spikes in popularity: When Nintendo released the Wii with backwards compatibility and New Play Control ports and later when Dolphin emulation took off. Depending on how Nintendo sells these games it won't just be "oh, I missed this the first time" but "oh, I didn't know this game even exists".

We'll see how ports do on Switch and beyond. I suspect that while perception definitely played a role the GameCube mainly failed because it simply lacked appealing software.
