Europe here too, apart from remaster talk not so much. People going crazy with news like "Nintendo will remake games that people are asking for".

I see, thanks.

Also, i've been regularly asking for Baten Kaitos 1 + 2 and i'm ready for Nintendo to surprise me. (If there wasn't that Bamco connection....)

Remember the early Switch days where rumors about Witcher 3 and Fortnite coming to Switch would provoke laughter?

If Nintendo goes crazy on remasters next year it feels like that could be a sign of a transition phase to new hardware. The Switch transition years for the 3DS included a ton of these types of releases.

Wii U ports: Mario Maker, Yoshi's Woolly World, Captain Toad
Other ports: Luigi's Mansion, Kirby's Epic Yarn
Remakes: Fire Emblem 2, Metroid 2, Mario & Luigi 1 + 3

That's exactly how it's going to go.

I can’t speak for everybody but I really hope we see some more remakes here. If Nintendo isn’t going to make a new FZero for reasons, remaking GX is the next best thing.

HD remasters (eg. TPHD)? Not so excited.

I think they absolutely kill the prospect of anything above N64 hitting NSO. With what has been released/what is rumoured to be coming, why would they add the same games to NSO? Also, presumably adding GC would mean a price increase/new tier but they can't really so much higher than the current top tier really as that'll put them above the rival services.
NGC won't happen before a few years either way, we know Gameboy and Gameboy Advance are in the works. They should launch in the upcoming 12 months.

NSO is a growing and important service for Nintendo and retro content is a key behind the expansion pack, they won't stop providing new retro games. Once the N64 library is done and we move toward GB/GBA, the next step will be GC. It will probably happen on the next Switch.

An emulated game is very different from a remake/remaster. NSO is great to bring a wide library of games to the Switch but key titles will always benefit from a glow up. It is not one or the other as shown by games like Link's Awakening, Advance Wars and more.

If they were to add GC though years down the line, do you think they would increase the price/introduce another tier? If they did, and in the next few years a lot of the biggest GC games are on Switch in HD forms, would people be willing to pay a premium for duplicates? Unless they saved NSO for the smaller GC stuff that won’t get the remaster treatment I guess.

I just wonder if games from GC and above are just that much bigger/require more work that it’s a step above what their current NSO infrastructure can handle.

It is a good question and I can see both happening. It'll ultimately depend on the market conditions when they are able to launch and whether they have additional ways to justify the increment.

Can't say I'm thrilled, if this Means less brand new game. I Hope this Is not the case thou
I am actually happy about it. Especially if it helps franchises that were dormant to see the light again. Gamecube games were in most cases really good so them being put in a better coat of paint could do wonders. It does depend how much works has been done for some of these of course :).

A remake of Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn in the Three Houses engine would be great for example. Or Tales of Symphonia on the Switch with some QoL features..... :D

Yoko Taro must be having fun pumping this stories out.

totally
and I love how SE is going full-in with "minor series"
In few months we had this, DioField and Harvestella (not saying that all three have the same budget or audacity or sales forecasts, but in my mind are all good "new approaches" I welcome

Still waiting for Nintendo to announce that they bought part of Tokyo RPG Factory to remake Mario & Luigi, Golden Sun, Magical Vacation/Starsign, Tomato Adventure...

Edit: Quote redacted per request

Give credit to SyluxHunter. This person is a real insider.

Unlike Zippo, right? Who is famously unreliable?

In other news, I do have to say I find it quite funny that Nintendo are putting all hands on deck with remakes, just because they know they're due to put GC on the Virtual Console soon.

No idea why they didn't have a team dedicated to GC remakes at the beginning of the generation, mind.

Yeah I mean, having ports and remakes doesn't bother me per se, in fact I think that some projects could be pretty exciting. think about a Metroid Prime remake or Genealogy of the Holy war. these are 20+ old year games, never released in the west if you think about FE. it's just that I hope these projects doesn't translate in a thin schedule of brand new games for 2023. And don't get me wrong, I would be more than satisfied with, for istance, 5 games like Botw2, new FE and let's say the rumored DK plus a couple of AA games.

I’m very happy about GameCube games coming back.

I'd prefer them to put those game on the NSO
remasters are welcome, if few/outsourced and alongiside new games (both new episodes or totally new IP)
if these rumors are true, after many Wii U ports we are getting invaded by old game remastered in HD with few new games in the General "big" Direct (possibly Fire Emblem and Zelda?) and a new episode in the Prime series still MIA and in any case VERY far away from release (and if Zelda TP and Zelda WW aren't bundled, I bet that also BOTW2 wait will be longer than expected)
2022 has been VERY GOOD in terms of new contents

Arceus
Kirby land
Triangle Strategy (published, probably partially funded?)
Fire Emblem Warriors
Mario Strikers (published, co-developed)
Live-a-Live (published, probably partially funded? This could be seen as a remake...let's say that if the effort spent into those rumored remasters would be comparable to this remake, I could change my stance on the topic, partially)
Xenoblade 3
Splatoon 3
Bayonetta 3
Mario+Rabbids 2 (published, co-developed)
Pokemon S/V

I'm starting to fear that 2023 could become a year of passage into the new hw, with tons of remasters outsourced projects, with a couple of bit hits (FE and Zelda) to transition into Drake

Right. We could get a bunch of new games with these ports/remakes sprinkled in. BotW 2, new Fire Emblem, DK, Mario, Pikmin 4, F-0 HD, BK 1/2 HD, TTYD HD, etc. just have a good balance with a lot of new to old

There’s some strong parallels to 2018 when we got big DLC for Xenoblade and Splatoon (replace Pokémon Let’s Go with SV expansions), two big games (Smash & Mario Party vs Zelda & ???) and tons of remasters and ports.

Catching up on the night’s news has been very exciting! The prospect of more GameCube remasters and ports is something I more than welcome. The dream is of course Eternal Darkness and Skies of Arcadia, but I’d welcome F-Zero too, despite not being as much a fan as most others.

I think I have my personal prediction locked down: opener is Prime HD for holiday, focus is BotW2 for spring and closer is Fire Emblem for 2023. Throw in some cube stuff in between as well as a EPD4 joint, and you have an all-timer as far as I’m concerned.

I feel like at this point it's gotta be worth it for most people. N64, Mario Kart 8 DLC, Octo Expansion, Animal Crossing DLC

I almost wonder if they'll introduce another paid upgrade

Torna!

I expect similar for new games next year and more ports next year. Nate already knows of exclusives for Drake. I’d imagine all the exclusives he knows for Drake are ports like Red Dead 2.

You know, i have no problem with those rumored WW HD and TP HD ports. The moment i get a problem with is when those ports do mean a delay for BotW 2.

I'm fairly sure that there won't be a delay, as Nintendo is usually very strict about giving solid timeframes and/or actual dates. Normally that means they're sure to hit those timeframes.
But there's still that little part of fear that there is a delay.

I'm just so sick of waiting for BotW 2, possible "blowout" in the upcoming Direct or not.

Is it just GameCube games being remastered/remade? Or are Wii games included as well, all the talk is focused on GC so I’m not sure if Emily specifically mentioned that console was the focus.

Jeff said the third party stuff that’s expected to be in the direct isn’t super exciting stuff.

I could see a lot of thirds, especially japanese ones, holding back announcements until Drake is out. Getting the remaining stuff that is almost ready to release soon out before 2023 starts.

Though i kinda hope that thirds go easy with Drake exclusives. You'd still want to tap the 110mil+ userbase of the current Switch versions if possible.

Could be.
And I can see "Xenoblade 3 Torna", for instance, being a "satisfying" AA (in terms of reception) game, and the "Octopath" expansion for Spla3 being another one, for sure
and both FE and Zelda are BIG GUNS, in terms of first party efforts..
let's hope there is also something else (a Mario project or a DK one, linked to the movie?) and that at least some of those remasters will actually be..remakes.

Oh well, I wasn't taking Drake into consideration.
I also imagine that IF drake will launch, there could be nintendo first party games too, additionally to the remasters we are talking about

Jeff said the third party stuff that’s expected to be in the direct isn’t super exciting stuff.

oh, wow. the road to this direct isn't the best one, isn't it?

You know what GC game I most want remastered?

F-Zero GX

The other two I’d want are Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4 but sounds like Prime will drop soon to complete that set.

From the Wii it would be Punch Out!!

This makes a lot of sense if Switch software is compatible with new hardware going forward - anything you port now will be evergreening for a long, long time on current and future hardware.

Everyone ready for the first full trailer for BotW 2? The time is definitely now.

I'm with you 100%. Nintendo trying to get as much of their back catalogue on Switch is a marvellous thing, as it finally resolves the issue of them having the single most impressive back catalogue in gaming, most of which was unaccessible. That being said, what this means for BotW2 is front of mind for me personally.

One way to look at this is that TP/WW were the Zelda titles for 2023, and that they switched places with BotW2. If Nintendo's "annual Zelda" plan is focused on calendar years and not fiscal years that'd sort of make sense.

That being said, Pokémon and Mario release schedules haven't made apparent sense for a while =P .

This. I don't really feel another BOTW2 delay. Also I don't think the Zelda ports will be released this year. Metroid should be enough.

If the Zelda ports release early next year with no BOTW2 delay, now that's too close to BOTW2, if those games are like January or February, BOTW2 is probably delayed until Summer or even Fall 2023 at least.

Zelda ports early next year and BotW 2 being spring is too close. To me that’s not going to work. I have it either as Zelda ports this year and BotW 2 spring or Zelda ports early next year and BotW 2 is delayed.

I see, thanks.

I don't know whether you were aware of this but it's actually not out of the realm of possibility.

Then i hope Nintendo crams them into November and December. I don't care if they're going to drown during the holiday onslaught and Pokemon ScarVio release.

It's going to be interesting to see which GameCube games Nintendo picks for remasters and remakes, especially since many "fan favourites" fell short commercially. As we've seen with some Wii U ports, not every game benefits equally from the illustrious Switch boost and some never leave bomba land.
I think some IPs are in better places than they were back in the GameCube days, I mean look at the reversal in fortune Fire Emblem has experienced since Path of Radiance was first released. A re-release of that on the Switch would sell significantly more due to how the IP is now much more recognisable, and being on a console with, what, 6 times the install base of the GC?

Then you consider something like F-Zero. Back in the GC days the idea it would be the last home console F-Zero for almost two decades was laughable. If Nintendo want a relatively risk free opportunity to revive the IP, it seems a no brainer.

The Switch is a software monster and I'm confident a lot of these remasters would break a million. It's only really the suuuuuper niche stuff that doesn't hit those numbers from a first party perspective these days.
