yeah, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to deny that the switch years are ending
If Nintendo's really going complete batshit with remasters, that combined with new releases and third party is enough to carry the Switch (of course, with Drake) another 5-6 or even 7 years imo, perhaps even longer.

Star Fox Assault came out in February 2005, almost two years before the Wii came out...
The Gamecube was already a dead system at that point, barely selling at $99. They could've saved it for a Wii launch title instead of letting it release on a system that was on life support (like they did again with Zero on Wii U). In any case, I just want to see the game get a fair chance, as I said before, a fair amount of people seem to not even be aware it exists.

Does this mean I could potentially see another remake back to back for FE? :D

but what if drake isn't a pro?

Relying heavily on remasters for that long sounds like a recipe for disaster. Switch sales are going to slow down, so you'd just be burning goodwill at that point. If the software output isn't consistently impressive (which remasters alone won't accomplish) then things are going to get pretty rough.

Finally:

how did you not bring up the one that people (approximately 5 people) want

I’d say Fire Emblem is more likely than F-Zero at this stage, although I disagree that they can’t do both.

They could easily just toss in Stinky Horse too.
Only three things are certain in life. Death, taxes and Fire Emblem being more likely than F-Zero

No but seriously I’m salivating at the thought of replaying F-Zero GX on Switch LAWD

Is there… actually a chance we see a full Switch successor next year?

That’s absolutely crazy.

These last six years of Switch have absolutely flown by.

If Nintendo goes crazy on remasters next year it feels like that could be a sign of a transition phase to new hardware. The Switch transition years for the 3DS included a ton of these types of releases.

Wii U ports: Mario Maker, Yoshi's Woolly World, Captain Toad
Other ports: Luigi's Mansion, Kirby's Epic Yarn
Remakes: Fire Emblem 2, Metroid 2, Mario & Luigi 1 + 3

Yall if ports and remasters means the end of the Switch years then the Switch years have been ending since March 2017

but what if drake isn't a pro?
True, that's also a possibility of course. It all depends, as Nate has said time and time again how Nintendo decides to market it, and more importantly if the Switch 1 is going to get phased out over time years after Drake has launched, how Nintendo decided to cut off that hardware and make games Drake exclusive going forward.

RD and PoR HD collection is the dream.

Those two games can definitely use a bit of updating and QoL features, but I don’t think they quite need full-fledged remakes like older FE’s, so I have hope IS will get around to them sooner than later (and I mean, fuck, if they’re really going to keep going in order for remakes, we won’t be seeing a PoR remake until freaking 2052 or something).

So I hope that becomes a side project for the FE devs at some point in the next few years. Like you said, they are nearly impossible to find legitimately these days, and plus Ike has retroactively become the franchise’s most popular character due to Smash, so it just makes sense to revisit his games with a nice modern touch.
Just as long as they update the shops to have buyable Killer weapons, that was one of the few gripes I had with PoR.

The only way I see this ending well for Nintendo in the long run is if they adopt the smartphone model and make Switch an iterative console. No need for new innovations, make Switch 2 in the future, support both for a few years and kill the previous model after a while.

I wonder if the idea would be to use remasters to test out/gain experience with Drake's featureset before applying it to more original titles

Launching a new system with a ton of ports and fewer original titles isn't super appealing on paper but they did that with 3DS and Switch so who knows

Assuming we do get a deluge of GCN/Wii/DS/3DS remasters over the next couple years, I'm very curious to see what the discussion surrounding retro content will be like. Will people prefer a subscription service like Gamepass or PS+ in which you get games from that generation with few to no improvements at a monthly rate, or standalone releases at a higher price in which each game receives a number of legitimate improvements?

New Nate The Hate podcast episode incoming about the GameCube remasters (aka Star Fox Adventures and the rest)

Nah. MVG is traveling for half of September. We won't have time to explore many topics.

Aw man! Well that stinks. Well, do you by any chance know of the GB/GBC/GBA NSO plans?
Yes. Spoke of those plans last yr and earlier this year. GB/GBC emulation has been done for a while.

Regardless of the GC's success, you said that they put out Star Fox Assault to die right before the Wii's release which is factually not true. In early 2005, the Wii or Revolution wasn't even a known thing. Resident Evil 4 just came out a month prior. Star Fox Assault came out a little over half way into the Gamecube's lifespan. It did not come out right before the Wii was released. There was nearly two years between the release of Star Fox Assault and the Wii.

Alright alright. I just want the dang game on Switch.

I really want to see how Nintendo squeezes everything in for the rest of 2022 (assuming we are really getting both Prime and WW/TP. Bolded items are already announced.

September 9th- Splatoon 3
September 30th- Bayonetta 1*

October 7th- The Legend of Zelda: WW/TP
October 20th- Mario + Rabbids: Spark of Hope
October 28th- Bayonetta 3

November 11th- Metroid Prime HD
November 18th- Pokémon Scarlet/Violet
December 9th- Advance Wars: Reboot Camp (I am not giving up the dream!)

*Release as a separate package

IMO early October and November seem like the best bets for either or both of these games.

When my family got our Wii, I was about eight years old. This was my first video game ever on my first home console:

now tell me

WHEN IS BALLOON POP REMASTERED COMING TO SWITCH

I think NSO is evidence they plan on doing just that. The moves from Wii U to Switch and PS3 to PS4 I truly believe are the last times prior libraries can be abandoned without backlash on a scale that would make the Xbox One launch seem like child's play. Too many people are 100% digital.

A new Switch every so many years with better specs and hardware improvements as needed with full backwards compatibility is the way to go.

My first videogame was Kirby's Dreamland 2 on the Gameboy. I had a hamster and the boxart had a hamster on it. I was pretty upset to learn that Kirby wasn't the hamster.

I mean, Nintendo asked Square Enix to remake LiveALive, they are really trying to find anything they can to fill out lineups between their games, and I think they have done a great job of it.

They announce Metroid Prime Remaster with 2 and 3 shedule later.
They bring back Metroid II : Return of Samus in the GB on NSO.
They bring back Zero Mission and Fusion in the GBA on NSO.
They teased Metroid Prime 4...

And just for my liking, Metroid Dread get an expansion DLC...

The Metroid SAGA is HERE on Switch! FEAST my friends for the Year of Samus...

Strange time we live in!! It would be exciting if all this happen.
It's crazy that 5-6/8 of these will very very likely happen. It's just a question of whether or not we're getting NSO/EP news on this Direct. IIRC Metroid and Super were launch titles of NES and SNES apps, it's very reasonable to expect II and Fusion for day one on GC/GBA and Zero Mission as one of the "coming later".

Metroid Dread receiving an expansion might be unlikely now, but could be likely if Nintendo is going for another studio for Dread 2/Metroid 6.

Metroid Prime 2 and 3 being announced is the thing I don't see happening at all. They'll come each when they come, won't be teased further out. 2024 at the earliest so no point in announcing them if for all we know they're not even in development yet.

Jesus Christ I just can't wait for the Direct I NEED to see MPR and please some seconds of MP4.

Yo shout out once again to the man Jeff Grubb for actually putting his name and a date on his predictions and none of this “soon” crap.

I think you are a Metroid fan.

Hi, I'm also a Metroid fan. Loved Dread and loving Prime 1 atm, can't wait for the remake

Oh, so that's why this thread burned through two pages in like 20 minutes.

(Also hi Emily! I hope you're having a good week.)

Hey @Brofield you’ll wanna see this
I take a brief Covid nap just to get whipped into a frenzy. HOT DAMN

I'm looking longingly at my GC collection on storage but rather physically inaccessible to me right now, but so many of these games with a fresh coat of HD paint and widescreen support would make them shine brighter than they ever could have 20 years ago.

Emily chiming in too to give hope that maybe Custom Robo HD isn't such a far-fetched dream??? Gods above this might actually make up for a lack of E3 Direct this year. I genuinely wonder how likely it is that games with licensing issues like Starfox Adventures with Rare and F-Zero GX with Sega have a shot at happening.

PRAISE BE

Now there's only 1 issue, how do they handle the DS games in a hypothetical expansion for whatever future Switch model since alot of them or the majority of them are dual screened games :>

Fellow Subjects of Raccoon, I'm going to rest and sleep now. Fear not for I will be forthright in my return to engage in further discussion about whatever insane revelations might occur in my hours of slumber.

I salute you

the Direct is nigh

On the Wii U, they did this (you could configure the screen size to an extent and which was bigger, or just show one)

I don't remember what my first game was exactly. It was either Zelda NES, SMB NES, or Duck Hunt. I think it was Zelda.

I'm not a proud man. But if those 3 games make their way to Switch via remaster/remake, I can absolve myself of my gaming transgressions.

Wow, on the same thread page I was ratio'd by Nate and Emily drops a megaton, you truly love to see it haha. Manifesting a Thousand Year Door remaster among the pile 🤞
Buddy, you need to come hang out at my crib for the weekend.
I could play Prime and TP anytime on Dolphin, but I'm waiting for the remasters/ports on Switch 😎
Finally, a game-deficient ally lmao
Hmm. How would y'all rate a Direct featuring Windwaker HD, Twilight Princess HD, Metroid Prime HD, F-Zero GX HD, and BOTW2?
Easy 9/10. 9.5 if BOTW 2 and MP HD look stunning, 10/10 with one more quality new game announcement.

I was going to say something like the flip grip controller but this is a million times more likely.

They do like to release controllers so I could see a flip-grip accessory and a vertical mode option alongside it
