Leaks which have seemingly been proven right from this trailer state
gyms don't scale in level which disappoints me

Nooo they need to fix that.

Ideas
  • Scale gyms with level and no. Pokemon in your party
  • Change all trainer battles to also scale in the same way
  • Trainer battles are no longer mandatory
  • You can challenge any trainer any number of times.
  • You can also agree to do anywhere between 1v1 to 6v6 with any trainer.

and Scarlet/Violet seems more of the same so far.

The NPCs look great and those new Pokemon designs are all excellent. It's going to be tough picking out my team.

There's no set gym path too! Nice. Remains to be seen if the gyms will scale or not.

I intend to ignore the crystal gimmick, same way I refused to Dynamax any of my Pokemon.

Looks like you’re in a small minority.

I’ve not bought a Pokemon since the OG Gold and even I thought it looked really good.
Agree! I hadn't played one since Ruby, and I got really intrigued with the last Switch ones, but for some reason everyone said they were garbage. (Never really heard an explanation why though!) This looks pretty good, and I'll probably dive in on it!

Poor presentation overall since it was just basically a bunch of service game ads with very little meaningful new updates up until the S/V trailer... but that was really all I was there for so I can't be bothered. I have plenty to play this year anyway haha.

You can tell who read the leaks and who didn't.

Those who did are hyped cause all the stuff Kaka said is likely true as by that trailer. ;D

Don’t think the mainline Pokémon games are for me anymore. Playing Legends wasn’t my thing in the end, found it boring after the first couple hours.

I still enjoy some of the spin-offs. the only mainline title I got back to frequently is Emerald cuase of the Frontier, rental battles were my thing. I enjoy the gameplay still, just don’t enjoy the mainline journeys anymore. Plus Open World isn’t my thing lol,

Still. I think this game will outsell S&S. Can’t see it not beat it.

See, I've been out of it for a while, but I keep up with the news on Pokemon because of nephews/nieces that adore it. It sounds like these more things are pretty optional in the game, which is actually nice to me since you get to play how you want. Doesn't "seem" like your forced into anything!

Yeah, Fidough is kind of incredible!

Everything looks amazing except the new wooper. Love the look of the game and the idea of having your partner legendary to explore the world.

Nice
The rides seem cool, kinda like Legends Arceus but all in one Pokémon
The story side seems to be a bit more free which is a plus
They still didn't show how wild battles are initiated did they 🤔

Like okay, they may change type but...who cares? In execution why do I need an Eevee that's a water type instead of just having...a water type?
I think it adds a small surprise element, like, if both trainers activate the transformation but one of the Pokémon changes to an unexpected type

That'd be the unwisest decision ever... which pretty confirms it to me it's legit.

I'm still not fond of the art style (not by a mile, tbh, even though I liked the Arceus one), so between this, the new gimmick and, if true, the spoiler thing, this seems to me like a hard pass... which sucks, because I was looking really forward to it.

Developer 1: “So, our legendaries this generation are going to be rideable mounts that you use to traverse the game world. What should we call them?”

Developer 2: “How about for both of them we put a different random syllable before ‘Ride On’ and call it a day?”

Developer 1: “Brilliant!”

Seriously though, the game does look good but after S&S Im gonna wait till after launch to see whether they can pull off the non-linear stuff well. Not a big fan of the new art style either, but I can get over that lol

I'm mixed about SV so far. It looks okay, aside from performance of course, which I mean, woof. I like the region, I like the new Pokemon they've shown off, I like the character designs. The open-world looks like it could be fun. The new dumb gimmick is at least less dumb that "Pokemon, but beeg", which was so dumb that I refused to play SwSh. Crystallized Pokemon is whatever, I can get over that. Multiplayer does absolutely nothing for me.

Overall, I'm gonna play it and I'm sure I'll like it. It just doesn't have anything that excites me. Unlike PLA, which was exciting as hell. They seem to be playing very safe here.

edit: They still can't be arsed to add VA

You may see poisoned Pokémon in areas where these Wooper live.
Is this confirmation that the best feature of GSC, statused wild Pokémon, is making a triumphant return?

playing it safe would mean another old school linear Pokemon game.
A full open world game is neither safe nor easy to make.

Arceus wasn’t planned to be the future of franchise, if you expect future main games (the ones that start new generations) to follow Arceus formula you are setting up yourself for disappointment
At this point you're probably right but imo it really felt like thats what they were implying during the direct they revealed PLA.

Looks like they're tackling quite a few new things, which is good for the fans.

Personally I was hoping that they'd carried over PLA's immediacy, while patching over that game's huge technical blemishes. It'd make me finally try Pokémon, but - and it's hard to tell without a gameplay video - it looks like I'll it's more on the standard Pokémon side? Might pick up a used copy of PLA instead.

I really don't get the scaling complaints tbh. Scaling is probably one of the most hated mechanics in RPG games.
my problem is that it trivializes the go-anywhere aspect. going left instead of right could mean I get an overly easy experience, especially if there's no obvious signposting of order. even a light scaling would be preferable

I hate this so goddamned much

I honestly think that this is the most exciting thing about open world games. Getting into situations you cannot predict, maybe even outwitting the game or you fail and learn from it. But to each their own I guess.

Honestly. This isn’t true. Open world transitions in series are still very much exciting in the grand schemes of things.
I guess I'm not excited by the fully open-world because we just had PLA. And yeah, that wasn't fully open, but the zones in that game are massive. Going to fully open in SV by removing the very occasional loading screen transitions that PLA had doesn't seem like that big of a leap to me.

No level scaling means I'll look up the levels of the trainers day 1 and follow the order that'll give me the at least some semblance of challenge. Level scaling is bad when done poorly but Pokemon is a very different game from something like Elder Scrolls in terms of combat.

I mean, the gyms have turned into Mega Man now, right? You start with what your starter is good against, then what you caught along the way, etc

I think scaling would be kind of lame when the rock paper scissors can give the player both choice and risk/reward. Do I do the gym that's right next to me that I'm not really prepared for, or do I go to the one that's all the way over there that I am?

Thing is, how are they gonna make the gyms challenging if your first gym is as difficult as the 8th one? Scaling is really the only way to do that whilst still keeping the ‘choose your order’ freedom.

As for scaling in general; people tend to hate it when it’s done for everything at the same time. For instance, both Oblivion and Skyrim had level scaling, but people don’t criticise the latter’s scaling nearly as much as the former.
