StarTopic Mario Strikers: Battle League |ST| So much hurt, it's fun!

I would love to get really really good at this game, it feels very satisfying to play the game even if you consider yourself to be decent.

Damn, I had a very bad stretch of matches today. I lost a bunch of them by 1 goal.

Also, I swear to God the goalkeeper's RNG goes rogue on me when my matches go to Golden Goal. I will shoot dozens of balls towards my opponent's goal and nothing goes in. Then they get the ball back, take a weak shot, and Boom Boom doesn't grab it. It has happened so frequently that when Golden Goal begins, I already anticipate a loss.
I scored a butt goal with Wario, so I consider that I already finished the game. Don't worry I'll keep enjoying the post-game.
Now you have to live your life knowing that, no matter what you achieve, nothing will get close to giving you the transcendental feeling of awesomeness you experienced when scoring a butt-goal as Wario in Mario Strikers: Battle League. Such is the punishment for doing something so fantastic.

I haven't won a single match in club mode so far.

I'm still having lots of fun losing, though, so it's fine.

How does partnering up in club mode even work? Does it match you with other people in the club, or with randoms?

Oh I'm not sure, I meant in general in quick play and at home I've played better with partners.

I think unfortunately the only way to play together in club mode is to be coordinated some other way. Like right now I'm online and it says 2 other people are also online - I can create a room but I'm just sitting there without them being notified in-game.

Ok, folks. There are only 4 spots left available in the Famiboards club. Hop in before it's full!

That's a good question. I would assume they partner you with random players, because limiting that to your fellow club members might lead to very long (mayeb infinite!) waits. But then, how would that work? Which club name would show up during the match? Yours or your partner's?

Yay, I beat two of the Galactic Cups! I use this team:
Bowser with a slightly bumped Shot
Toad with maxed out speed (the one i registered in the club)
Waluigi with a slightly bumped speed stat
DK with a bump on strenght

So far it doesnt work perfectly, but well enough. I need some speedy chars on the wings. I mainly scored goals with Toad, when I am able to outspeed the defender and get very close to the goal.

Despite the very small content, I love playing it so far! However, I cant play as much as i want to rn. We are currently planing our house, move to another city next week and I will start a new Job in August. So theres a lot going on, but when I catch a moment of peace, Ill sure play some strikers 😎

I can't wait!

I wonder what kind of rules they will use to make each season different from the ones that came before it. Since this will be the first one, I am expecting a vanilla ruleset, with items and hyper strikes turned on. But as things move forward, perhaps they will put some shenanigans into the formula.

Yeah it'll be the standard vanilla ruleset for the first season but I am also interested to see what the future seasons have in store.

Hey just joined the forums, excited to represent the club tomorrow!

Ran into a rage quitter and noticed it didn't give you anything at all. Felt like a wasted match. Hope that is not the case upon club play start. Could see that being a problem.

That's strange. The few cases of rage-quitting I have come across netted me the victory, the coins, and the tokens. Your case must have been some sort of bug.

Yeah you are correct turns out I later had someone quit out with 44 seconds left and it gave me coins and the victory.

The other one must have disconnected on the server side with 4 seconds remaining which is a huge bummer.

The Club Match players are incredibly cutthroat from my experience. Super aggressive and generally more versed in the mechanical stuff. They definitely put up more of a challenge than most Quick Match players. Part of it might also be that one of the Season Achievements is landing 30 charged super tackles in one game which seems incredibly daunting.

Looking at the leaderboards 3 hours into the season and you can tell some Clubs are dedicated and playing this game hard. The top Clubs are already over 700 points which at its most generous would've required over 120 games of straight wins, but realistically probably has a lot of losses baked in so it's likely a lot more games. Unsurprisingly these Clubs are those with maxed out members who probably play actively, but surprisingly some of the top 5 (including a current contender for Top 1) are Japanese clubs, which I didn't expect given the "lower" popularity of the game there. I see a lot of European Clubs at the very top based on their names, that's to be expected.

Our Club has about 36 points so far though it's still early and only a couple of us have been playing. We got put into a group with one Club that's in the 100s, probably not catching up to them but we're a solid second.

Wish everyone in their Clubs best of luck! Hope everyone has fun in pushing up the Divisions. I'm enjoying the competitive spirit a lot now that the season's underway.

Yeah, it has been pretty fun. I played some matches before work this morning. At one point I was 4-1, but then I hit a bad streak and ended up at 5-6, I believe.

My only complaint is that I wish they had gone the Splatfest way and "colored" the game with a different vibe since the season is underway.

That would have been really awesome!

Edit: I plan to get my first official club play in tonight when the kiddos go to sleep.

A buddy and I went on a nine game win streak last night. As bad as two player randos seemed in the playtest, working and communicating with a friend is probably the best time I have had with the game so far.

Though I've been on the opposite end as a single player and I understand that it's really not fair going against two competent players. They really should have separate queues for single player.

Played a bunch of league games for Fami Strikers.

Won 9 and lost maybe 5 or 6. Had loads of fun and intense games.

Loving some of the strikers on the roster. Got a shooty Luigi upfront with Peach, backed up by Meeple's Waluigi and my DK in defence.

Peach been delivering the perfect chip crosses into Luige diving headers. Love to see it.

The season rewards are a nice touch. All very achievable (got most quite quickly), aside from 30 fully charged tackles in one match. Might take a while..

Bought the game despite I didn't played the weekend demo. Yep I like this series that much (never have the chance to get my own copy). I will try play everyday at the night 😅

I am glad you like that Peach! :)

I have been using her plus that Luigi you mentioned quite a bit. The two are indeed a great pair.

And yeah, that 30 charged tackles challenge is by far the toughest one. I guess the only reliable way to do it is sort of sacrificing a match and going crazy with the tackles for 4 minutes.

Whew. The difficulty level of league matches is through the roof now that the season is underway. I played two matches and felt like I ran into a buzz saw.

(Also, glad to see that my Luigi isn't as useless as I thought he was; I, too, pair him with Speed Peach)

Ooof. Was going to pick this up this week but seeing here and elsewhere the difficulty when playing online against others is giving me pause lol

Quick Matches should still be casual fun.

I am not sure how good of a Strikers player I am, but the losses I've had have mostly been close, either by 1 or 2 goals. The only exception I remember was a game earlier today when my Boom Boom decided to take a break from blocking shots, which caused me to lose by 8-4.

I think the series' gameplay, save for the ridiculous super shot in Charged, has always led to these types of matches. So, personally, even if I lose, it always feels I am one or two breaks away from coming away with a victory. But I guess one's mileage may vary.

Only got to play one game tonight, just to try to help the club. it seems the other teams in our group haven't played any match yet, so I hope we can create some distance before they start. But since today the team I support is having a hard match I won't be able to concentrate too much to play it more. Will try to compensate playing more during the week.
Also, we have a couple of votes already for the stadium customization, how do you feel? Should I start changing or should we focus the bigger stadium upgrade (that we still can't afford, but are getting closer) and get the other ones after it?
BTW since Earthbounder and Skipper are more prevalent in this topic, if you want I can transfer the club to one of you.

Glad my Waluigi is helping :).

These cup battles are making me realize I’m not nearly as good at the game as the regular online matches led me to believe, haha.

It's weird how the other teams in our league have a whopping total of zero points. I wonder what's up with that.

I guess we can save for the stadium upgrade and then get the little ones afterwards. Given how much this first upgrade costs, I wonder how crazy expensive the next ones will be!

Anyway, as for club ownership, it's fine the way it is by me. But if eventually you feel you won't be very active and want to transfer it, then you can give it to me (I am Matt) or Skipper.

Played a bunch of matches for the club, ended up 13-17 for the night. Had a great time! Need to work on my charge passing leading to charged shots. I still struggle to land them.

Thoughts:

Bam-Bam can go from being the greatest goalie of all time to a piece of paper in a matter of seconds. Specifically the half court shots are just silly. I almost wonder if it is a bug. Bam-Bam steps forward like oh hello ball welcome home. Goal everytime.

I was kinda shocked at how many people are teaming up. Over 50% of my matches were against two or more players. I played a team of three twice along with a team of four. Solo lobbies are needed badly.

The three CPUs are just manhandled by multiple players, leaving no passing lanes. And hyperstrikes are basically guaranteed to go to the team. It's a major disadvantage, and when you have players that work together it's basically a wash.

For example, I beat a team of four, but only because they all beelined to the ball leaving my Rosalina wide open for five easy goals. Five goals is a pretty likely win in my experience against solos, but I had to fend off four hyperstrike attempts. I ended up barely edging out the victory at 5-4, and that was only because they mistimed two of four hyperstrikes. The chance of tacking them was near impossible because they would just knock all the CPUs down and then pass to the person furthest from me.

Again, solo lobbies need to be a thing.

Had exactly the same experience with hyperstrikes as a solo player vs. multiple opponents. Can't get the orb, can't block the shot.

Broadly enjoy the inclusion of hyperstrikes (maybe aside from how many orbs drop per game) but it's really problematic for the solo player in 1 v 2/3/4 games.

I cant contribute to much this season, I only got to play one match yesterday (which I won, gladly).
However, our club was on the first place and our oppenents dont seem to play any matches? Lol

Btw my team on Strikers Club is currently my fast Toad and the fast Waluigi for the Wings, a Bowser as Captain und Wario as Defender.

Whipped up a beatdown team (2 x DK, 2 x Waluigi) to do the 30 charged tackles challenge. Unleashed my inner Giorgio Chiellini and went hard on tackles.

Somehow won 4-2 but didn't get the challenge... Agbabkgnalkgnlda

I just faced off against a player from one of the top teams. They don't have a stunning winning percentage, but they have an insane number of matches. I believe their record was something like 499-456. I thought I was doomed, but I was able to win 2-1. But then I had two terrible matches to finish my morning session at 2-2 overall.

I agree that solo-only lobbies need to be a thing. I wonder if they will ever address that.

Also, I just got crushed by someone who scored about eight goals by only using very weak shots taken from close to the goal by poor shooting characters! It wasn't a fun loss. I guess that like fully-charged shots from the midfield, Boom Boom has a problem against those and this person built a playing strategy out of that weakness.

Nice win!

I think I know what you are referring to. Taking shots from the entrance to the pentalty box? I saw a few people doing that last night. Kicking it high with low power, the ball goes right over Boom Boom. But they weren't spamming it like that. Hmmmm

I'm also just realizing that I've been referring to the goalie as Bam Bam this whole time. Lol oops.

Yesterday I played 4 or 5 matchs against randoms and I lost all of them lmao The game is pretty fun, wish some friends got it but my sister is going to get a Switch in a few days and because I'm going to game sharing with them I could always play with her and her husband.

Yeah the competition is fierce.

I go plenty of spans like that and I've played quite a bit now. There is a lot to learn for as simple as it might look from the outside. Try not to get discouraged! I repeat this to myself as well lol

Something I picked up today was that free passing gives an automatic charge pass. It puts standard passes at a huge disadvantage. Charge passes have a much higher chance of leading to a goal from my experience.

Either the game's community has collectively figured out Boom Boom or I have been having a weird streak, because it feels like pretty much all matches I played today were high-scoring affairs. Thankfully, I was able to get some good results, but these shootouts are not as fun to play as "normal" matches. There are so many goals being scored the flow of the whole thing gets a bit lost, I think.

I hope they patch the goalie soon.

Hope everybody's having fun with the first season of the game. I have unfortunately been able to play in the season and chat here in general so far as I've been very busy with school work.

I too could only play very few matches. Will be more in the next season! Regardless, it seems we will be on the first place lol.

Bum Bum really is sometimes hard to pass and on other occasions incredibly slow. It would be cool if he could wear gear as well. Stats could be reaction, knocked out time if he gets hit and so on.

By the way, are we sure there are only people from this board in our club? Surely we got some randoms too. Maybe we should all write our Strikers Name in here?

Gear for the goalie would be neat. Going to get Boom Boom some giant foam gloves so he can stop Rosalina scoring from the halfway line.

Good point about players in the club too. I've changed my account tag to daiquiri so you can see who I am on the roster
